We have a rare Wednesday release of the Pathfinder podcast, but we promise the wait was worth it. Joining us today is Kelly Larson, who's the CEO of Aquarian Space. The Boulder, Colorado startup is building “internet for the solar system.” Or, to get a bit more technical, Aquarian is developing a communications network for interplanetary exploration. In March, Aquarian announced it had raised $650,000 in seed funding to get to work on its solar system internet. Draper Associates led the seed round, which is especially notable because Draper was an early investor in SpaceX. Today's episode is brought to you by SpiderOak Mission Systems, an industry leader in space cybersecurity. Check them out at https://spideroak-ms.com/ and download the new NSR/SpiderOak sponsored whitepaper, titled “Space Cybersecurity – Current State and Future Needs,” at www.spacecyber.com DISCUSSION PREVIEW: For starters, we get a status report on what Aquarian's been up to over the last six months. But there's plenty more on tap, such as: - How Kelly landed at Aquarian, with a serial entrepreneur background and non-space resume - NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) and new opportunities with today's technology - Going to market with CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) rovers and landers - What a lunar Wi-Fi network will look like and its first applications - The capital required for the initial network buildout - Is Kelly worried about aliens free-loading on Aquarian's Wi-Fi? …and more! Come for the above topics, stay for ever-so-brief discussions of yoga and astrology (Ryan's totally unbiased opinion: Aquarians rule). Pathfinder is brought to you by Payload, a modern space media brand. While we have designs on becoming the biggest space content company in the galaxy, for now, we send newsletters and publish podcasts. A citizen named Kelly Larson comes to Leslie's office and makes a passionate plea for the Twilight books to be included. When Leslie refuses, saying the books have no connection to Pawnee, Kelly handcuffs himself to a pipe in her office hoping she'll reconsider. Having brought food, water and a pillow Kelly settles in for the long haul. Leslie tries to get Kelly to leave her office to no avail, until she notices the name "Liz Waverly" in one of Kelly's Twilight books. Leslie realizes that Kelly wants to put Twilight into the time capsule to impress his 12 year old daughter and make up for the fact that he and his ex-wife have divorced. Hearing the backstory, Leslie decides to include the book, but Ben points out the slippery slope this could create. To make things right, Leslie decides to hold a public meeting so all citizens can make suggestions for capsule items. The meeting descends into chaos when the citizens begin to argue over including absurd and random objects that have nothing to do with the town. Leslie tries to compromise by making multiple time capsules, but ultimately decides to stick to one capsule and include nothing except a video recording of the meeting, saying it represents Pawnee because it shows "a lot of people with a lot of opinions arguing passionately for what they believed in."Meanwhile, Andy still pines for April, who is now dating the handsome Eduardo. Chris suggests Andy tap into the aspects of his personality April was attracted to in the first place, which Andy decides are that he is nice and that he is in a band. Andy decides to be nice to Eduardo, and the two bond over their love of The Dave Matthews Band. April becomes frustrated because she only dated Eduardo to make Andy jealous and dumps Eduardo. The episode ends with the Pawnee residents, including Kelly and his daughter, watching an outdoor screening of the Twilight film.

Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury and death around the world. More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and children under the age of five are most at risk. To highlight the impact drowning has on communities - and to draw attention to the need for urgent action - the United Nations General Assembly passed its first-ever Resolution on Global Drowning Prevention, declaring July 25th as World Drowning Prevention Day. Our founder, Mike Bloomberg, is the World Health Organization's Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries. Given that drowning claims more than 235,000 lives a year, he's working to draw more awareness to this cause. Since 2012, Bloomberg Philanthropies' Initiative to Prevent Drowning supports tailored efforts to tackle the specific causes of drowning on a local level in Bangladesh, Viet Nam, and Uganda. To tell us more about the Initiative, Kelly Larson, who works on our public health team, sits down with Dr. Aminur Rahman, the Director of the Center for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh. They discuss why drowning is so prevalent for children below the age of 5 in Bangladesh, the importance of community daycares to prevent drowning, and why the government of Bangladesh is taking a lead on drowning prevention. Then, Becky Bavinger of the Bloomberg Philanthropies public health team sits down with Huyen Doan, the Viet Nam Country Director for the Global Health Advocacy Incubator. They discuss creating a survival swimming program for nearly 15,000 children in provinces with high drowning numbers and how we're measuring progress in drowning prevention.

One public health challenge that receives limited attention and insufficient resources is road safety. Our founder, Mike Bloomberg, is the WHO's Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries. Given that road traffic crashes kill nearly 1.35 million people and injure as many as 50 million every year, this is a major focus in his role. Weak and inadequate road safety laws, minimal or nonexistent vehicle safety standards, and streets designed solely for vehicle use - and not pedestrians - are serious threats to road safety, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In order to save lives on the road, Bloomberg Philanthropies has funded road safety efforts since 2007, and will continue to support its Initiative for Global Road Safety through 2025. It supports strengthening road safety laws and implementing evidence-based interventions in cities and countries across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, with a particular focus on speed management. In this episode, Kelly Larson of the Bloomberg Philanthropies public health team sits down with Soames Job, Head of the Global Road Safety Facility and Global Lead for Road Safety with the World Bank. They discuss how the World Bank works with countries around the world on road safety initiatives, how the pandemic has changed the way people drive, and how the World Bank Global Road Safety Facility works to ensure safe speeds and enforcement of speed limits around the world. Kelly Larson also sits down with Juanjo Mendez, the Secretary of Transportation of the City of Buenos Aires, to discuss how the city is working to reduce fatalities by 50% in the next 10 years, why the pandemic was an opportunity to strengthen road safety in Buenos Aires, and the role that reducing speeds plays in saving lives.

Kelly Larson has climbed mountains. Literally and figuratively.   (Check out her TED talk  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49CaCeC4C_Y)!  As the CEO of Aquarian Space, there’s always challenges to be overcome, just like the challenges we must overcome within our universe. Major space weather events. Solar flares, coronal mass ejections. Don’t worry, Kelly’s working on it.  Beth and Kelly share a casual conversation that answers:    What’s more difficult? Being a CEO to a space start-up, or completing a Ph.D.?  What motivates Kelly to climb mountains when it can be SO DIFFICULT?  A LOT of our asteroid detection is done by volunteers. This global threat has some great people working on this and they’re doing a great job. Is it enough?  Which leadership traits can be implemented from years of yoga practice and instruction?    “This industry is a key essential about life… our capacity to be in touch with the wonder and the awe that space reminds us of. To be in touch with that, I believe, makes us better humans.”-Kelly Larson from Casual Space Podcast  About Kelly Larson: CEO of Aquarian Space, TEDx speaker and a serial entrepreneur, Kelly Larson, ABD, is an innovator at the intersection of business, science and leadership. As a farm girl grown into a Yoga and transformation entrepreneur turned space CEO, she trail-blazes new business ventures and connects people and ideas across the globe. Kelly is widely known for her innovative approaches to business and her strategic range. She currently specializes in aerospace market-ready development strategies with an emphasis in collaborative international partnerships and high-level entrepreneurial ventures. Kelly sees that we can only develop a strong interplanetary economy together.  “We’re going to network the solar system so that people going to Jupiter, anybody that wants to go out into space can send a signal back to Earth- we’re offering a higher data capacity option.”  About Aquarian Space: https://aquariandevices.com/ Aquarian Space (formerly Devices) is the world’s first commercial Space Based Interplanetary Communications Provider.  Their Space Based Relay Network allows customers to send and receive high volumes of uninterrupted streaming data quickly and reliably, 24/7.  Aquarian Devices is building the foundational infrastructure for a fully networked Solar System that will relieve a major bottleneck in lunar and deep space communications and open the door for humanity’s expansion into the next frontier. PS- Aquarian Devices is currently looking for a CTO, and a COO! More details at the end of the show notes.     BONUS SHOW NOTES & QUOTES:  On being a female CEO: “During today’s space conference, I’ve been noticing on the panels where both male and female CEO’s are presenting, the females are asked about risk, and the males are asked about their upsides.” I feel like I’m paddling upstream sometimes. I prefer to be kind, and a relational-based person. That means that (at times) people tend to often underestimate me. I have advantages: I can relate with people really well. I have a fresh energy. What I see in my future is an adventure. To me, being a woman and being a leader is not just about breaking stereotypes, it’s also about bringing the gifts that are innate. I have different hormones in my body and I’m wired differently, so I feel delighted in trailblazing as one of many women that’s about femininity that’s really powerful in leadership.” About Being a CEO: “I’ve done start-ups before. The bootstrapping. It’s hard. I mean, it’s really hard. Raising capital is a whole other level with the team. Doing a start up with one of the more audacious technologies, and one of the most ‘out there’ industries, it was so hard. It was so challenging. I just listened to my gut and I just knew that this was going to be a long-term thing for me. I got through the first layer of fire, and now it’s really fun.”  “I never questioned that I was supposed to be doing this. When I’m committed, I’m committed. What kept me climbing mountains and walking through fires (as a CEO)? The answer today, is that it’s FUN. I’m not just getting to create a really cool company in an incredible industry, but a company that’s going to make a major impact on the space industry AND, one of the technologies our company makes possible are space weather and asteroid detection, which are two of the biggest threats to human kind. I get to literally and very functionally contribute to the preservation of our species!” “I get to speak about space, and get people re-connected to space and the beauty & magnificence of it. It feels like a privilege and an honor. It is so hard and it’s great.”  About Solving the Problems of Space Threats: “NeoCam Near-Earth Object Camera is coming, and it will help, but it doesn’t help cover all of the problems. So what we can do at Aquarian Devices is the first high-data rate deep space communication, to help with space weather and asteroid detection. Through 360 degree cameras and AI, we are able to get the data so that the brilliant scientists on Earth can predict and track the threats.” On the Space Exploration Industry from Kelly’s Unique Perspective: “Space right now is in this profound moment of growth and change. It is THE time that start-ups are starting to thrive and take off.
