Bryn Meyer was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court and field. What she loves most about high school sports is being able to compete with her friends to make the sports more fun. She has also been able to make many new friends through sports and she is happy to make those connections. She is grateful for sports because they have taught her how to work together with others and how to achieve goals as a team. Bryn competes in basketball, track and field, and trap shooting. She is also the secretary for her school's National Honor Society. Outside of school and sports, Bryn is involved in 4-H and helps coach youth basketball players in a camp every Sunday. She is also a member of the Wisconsin Show Pig Association. To Bryn, agriculture is a huge part of her life. Showing livestock has given her confidence in herself and has taught her how to work hard. She is thankful that the industry has allowed her to meet so many people through showing. One of her favorite parts about showing livestock is that she can do it with her family. Growing up in agriculture has taught her so many life lessons that she will value and use to be successful for the rest of her life. After graduating high school, Bryn plans on attending Loras College to continue track and field and major in pre-vet.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The universe is a fantastically wondrous place. There are more things in heaven and earth than are often dreamt of in our philosophies, to paraphrase Hamlet a little bit. And for the many things we can observe in the physical universe, science sometimes struggles to come up with an explanation as to what is really going on. How much more mysterious are those things which we cannot see? How should Christians think about things that the science of the heavens tells us cannot be seen, such as the idea of the existence of many different universes? That's the question we tackle this week and next on the broadcast with astrophysicist from Reasons to Believe, Dr. Jeff Zweerink. We talk about his 2008 book, Who's Afraid of the Multiverse? Specifically—responding to some of the critics Pope Francis's recent apostolic letter, Ad Theologiam Promovendam—we talk about how the pope's theology fits in terms of the Ressourcement theology that dominated at the Second Vatican Council and its development since then.  After more than sixteen years of teaching theology at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, Dr. Matthew Shadle is the Academic Assessment Coordinator for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa. He received his B.A. in Religion from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio.  He has published Interrupting Capitalism: Catholic Social Thought and the Economy (Oxford, 2018) and The Origins of War: A Catholic Perspective (Georgetown, 2011), as well as numerous essays and articles on Catholic social teaching and its intersection with both fundamental moral theology and the social sciences, with special focus on war and peace, the economy, and immigration. Anyone who has been following Catholic news within the U.S. or globally has probably gotten used to hearing updates about synods. Thanks to the leadership of Pope Francis, terms like “synod” and “synodality” have entered the ordinary vernacular of Catholics. At the time of this recording, the three-year-long Synod on Synodality, running from 2021 to 2024, is still ongoing, but many Catholics may still be uncertain about the purpose of this event, or what a synod even is. Today's guest on the first episode of season three of the Glad You Asked podcast, can help clarify what the Synod on Synodality is all about, and how to understand Pope Francis' vision for a synodal church within the context of existing tradition, going back to the earliest days of Christianity.  Amanda Osheim is Endowed Professor of the Breitbach Catholic Thinkers and Leaders Program and Professor of Practical Theology at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Her publications include A Ministry of Discernment: The Bishop and the Sense of the Faithful and Stepping Towards a Synodal Church. We are so excited for another (crossover!) episode with one of our most favorite people: small-town nonprofit expert and fun-haver, Patrick Kirby. This episode is all about how small town nonprofits can raise more money and create a bigger impact.    About Patrick Patrick Kirby is the Founder of Do Good Better Consulting and a believer that “we've always done it this way” is the most dangerous phrase in the English language.    Patrick has spent over a decade working in nearly every capacity in the nonprofit industry, for organizations of all shapes and sizes, and strives to ‘Do Good Better' every day. From organizing $10,000 cure walks to $1 million galas, Patrick's passion lies in creating creative solutions to make fundraising less boring.   He cut his donor relations/fundraising teeth as the Alumni Coordinator at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, MN, before trying his hand as a manufacturing sales rep to companies such as Target and Best Buy. Tired of being yelled at for uncontrollable international shipping issues in both English and Chinese, Patrick re-joined the world of nonprofit work as the Sr. Development Director at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation MN/Dakotas Chapter before taking the Chief Development Officer position at the Anne Carlsen Center.   He earned his B.A. in “B.S.” (politics) at Loras College in Dubuque, IA, and is hopelessly addicted to super nerdy Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels and old school SquareSoft ® RPG Nintendo games. Patrick married out of his league to his wife Shannon, has three ridiculously adorable children named Spencer, Preston, and Willow, and lives in West Fargo, ND.   In this episode, we cover: The unique struggles of small town non-profits Why we need to be more intentional with our giving  Why we need to say no to form letters What steps to take to transform your fundraising What the future of impactful, aligned philanthropy looks like   Links and Resources Mentioned: Do Good Better Consulting Website: https://www.dogoodbetterconsulting.com/ Do Good Better Consulting Podcast: https://www.dogoodbetterconsulting.com/dogoodbetterpodcast

Good Heavens! The Human Side of Astronomy
Escaping the Beginning? Part Two with Astrophysicist Jeff Zweerink

Good Heavens! The Human Side of Astronomy

The best science of the universe seems strongly to suggest our universe did indeed have a beginning. Why are the best minds in astrophysics trying to create models of the universe without a beginning? Are these models anywhere close to explaining a beginningless universe?  As we heard last week, there is indeed an anti-supernatural bias in the sciences today against the idea of God having anything to do with our universe. The late Stephen Hawking, Lawrence Krauss, are just a few examples of cosmologists who have openly expressed their intent to explain the cosmos without reference to God.  How then does the message of the cross speak to modern cosmology? If science found a way to explain the universe without a beginning would that force us to reinterpret Genesis?   By no means. Our guest again this week is astrophysicist Dr. Jeff Zweerink. On part two Jeff gives us more background into why beginningless models of the cosmos simply don't work, especially those which overtly attempt to "get rid of God." Jeff also offers how he sees our Christian faith in light of modern cosmology.  Astrophysicist Jeff Zweerink is a research scholar for Reasons to Believe (RTB), an organization dedicated to demonstrating the compatibility of science and the Christian faith. Jeff's work focuses on helping people of all backgrounds bridge the perceived gap between science and the Christian faith. Jeff has also made many media appearances, on television, radio, and in print. He earned a BS in physics and a PhD in astrophysics with a focus on gamma rays from Iowa State University. He taught and ran the planetarium at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, until postdoctoral research in gamma rays led him to the University of California, Riverside. Prior to joining RTB, Jeff spent years working on the STACEE and VERITAS gamma-ray telescopes and was involved in research projects such as the Solar Two project and the Whipple Collaboration. He continues to work as a project scientist at UCLA on GAPS, a balloon experiment seeking to detect dark matter. Jeff is also a coauthor on more than 30 academic papers published in peer-reviewed journals, such as Astrophysical Journal, Astroparticle Physics, and Astrobiology. A Christian from childhood, Jeff struggled to reconcile his love of science and his desire to serve God. While an undergrad at Iowa State University, he heard astrophysicist and RTB founder Hugh Ross speak on the constructive integration of science and faith. Hugh's old-earth perspective introduced Jeff to a creation view that aligns with both Scripture and science. Ten years later, a professor encouraged Jeff to enroll in RTB's volunteer apologetics program. This involvement eventually led to a scholar position in 2005. Today, Jeff writes and speaks on the compatibility of science and the Christian faith and on evidence for intentional design from a multiverse theory, dark energy and dark matter, and exoplanets. His speaking engagements take him to universities, churches, and other venues around the world, including high schools and youth groups and numerous conference proceedings. He is also the author of Is There Life Out There?, Who's Afraid of the Multiverse?, and Escaping the Beginning?.
