On Tuesday, introducing the team's two draft picks to the local media, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka reiterated the idea the team enters this offseason valuing continuity. They want to keep this core group together, and build on what was accomplished following the trade deadline last season.Of course, continuity can mean a lot of different things, as can core. Some guys are more core than others, right? So who might get left out if the Lakers decide to run it back... mostly? And if they go that direction, do they have a path to better players?Well, on Wednesday reports indicated the Lakers would be very, very interested in Denver's Bruce Brown, were they to free up use of their non-taxpayer midlevel exception, worth a little over $12 million. They'd have plenty of competition, and even getting to a place where an offer could be made would mean parting ways with Malik Beasley and Mo Bamba, and perhaps more. And it would also require a very astute reading of the free agent market, because using that exception would hard cap the Lakers and they'd need to squeeze a lot of folks in with the money available (Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, D'Angelo Russell being the most important). It would limit their flexibility, potentially... but it would also open up an avenue to maximize the talent that could be had on the free agent market. It's a tough choice for Rob Pelinka... unless he has a good feel for what's coming this summer. And certainly early signs are that the market for Russell and even Hachimura might not be as robust as initially thought as the season was winding down. There's a world in which the Lakers keep everyone that matters, even potentially Dennis Schröder, and still manage to improve the team. There's also a path where they swing and miss and find themselves short on valuable supporting pieces.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers value continuity... meaning what, exactly?SEGMENT 2: Could the Lakers make a run at Bruce Brown?SEGMENT 3: Is it worth the attempt to get a guy like Brown? Because after him, there aren't a lot of realistic upgrades, and they could be left holding the bag having sacrificed depth and flexibility.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. What a busy weekend! The Lakers broke a 9-game preseason losing streak, and while wins and losses don't necessarily matter in these games, Sunday's win over Golden State had some significant developments. First, Anthony Davis was dominant. 28 points in 21 minutes, with every facet of the game on display. Hit some threes, hit some mid-range, dominated in the paint, got to the line. And he showed some swagger. It was the type of performance the Lakers are going to need - a lot - through the season if they want to exceed expectations. Plus, Kendrick Nunn played great, Lonnie Walker IV shot the ball well and generally speaking the Lakers looked good when important players were on the floor.Meanwhile, though, the Lakers didn't play LeBron James, Russell Westbrook or Patrick Beverley, and are running out of time to develop the type of continuity in a still-complex rotation they'll need. Darvin Ham says it's all part of the plan, but in some ways it would have been nice for the plan to put a little higher premium on shared floor time, especially after Davis's lower back issue scuttled one game where everyone was supposed to play together.Meanwhile, the weekend was dominated by news that Lakers GM Rob Pelinka has received a contract extension, keeping him with the team (or at least paid by the team) through the 2025-26 season and aligning his deal with Ham's. In theory, this makes sense. It's best to have those two office holders running on parallel timelines, so everyone has the same interests and can row in the same direction and all that. This, as reported by folks like ESPN's Dave McMenamin, has been the arrangement since Ham was hired, and it's just a matter of getting the terms ironed out now. It explains a lot of how Pelinka has approached the offseason, and ultimately that's good for the Lakers.Except the bigger question is this: While the process here makes sense and the logic is sound... what if Pelinka isn't very good at his job?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis dominates as the Lakers win a preseason game in San Francisco.SEGMENT 2: Why solid play from supporting castmembers like Lonnie Walker IV and Kendrick Nunn matters and how they could influence the combinations Ham uses.SEGMENT 3: Rob Pelinka gets an extension. #KlutchSports Reportedly 'Not Happy' With #Lakers GM #RobPelinka , What Does That Mean For The Lakers Klutch Sports Group, the agency associated with Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, is reportedly unhappy with Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka. Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report offered some insight into the matter. "According to multiple NBA sources, Klutch is not happy with Pelinka," Pincus wrote. "The sentiment has long percolated, but it reached a boil when Pelinka refused to trade [Russell] Westbrook and a future first-round pick (likely 2027) for Houston Rockets guard and Klutch client John Wall." Westbrook was acquired by the Lakers over the summer, with L.A. hoping that the move would bolster the team's chances at winning another title. Instead, Westbrook's inability to establish a smooth chemistry with his teammates has contributed to what's been a brutal season for the Lakers. At the All-Star break, the #Lakers have a record of 27-31. They are simply trying to reach the postseason at this point. The absence of superstar Anthony Davis due to injury will only make things tougher. L.A.'s struggles could also impact James's future with the team. There has been a lot of speculation about what the superstar's next move will be. He recently spoke about wanting to conclude his career by playing on the same team as his son. There's obviously a solid chance that he'll have to leave L.A. in order to do so. On the bright side, it seems like there's time for Pelinka and Klutch Sports to patch up any differences they may have with each other. However, they need to fix things as quickly as possible. James' future with the team could depend on it. So Z Nation, what should the Lakers and Rob Pelinka do about the drama between the organization, Klutch Sports and LeBron James??? Comments down below
Monday was a quiet day in El Segundo, with the Lakers getting in a rare practice (with another coming Tuesday!) and no big newsy controversies to juggle. Which gives everyone a chance to look ahead (by looking backwards just a little). There are a few bits of unfinished Trade Deadline Week business that the show couldn't get to, starting with reports stating that Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and stars Anthony Davis and LeBron James may not have been fully aligned on strategy. Were the stars ok with standing pat, at least in the way Pelinka suggested? Were they really consulted, as he stated? There is plenty of wiggle room to interpret events, but it seems like all the parties involved are, at the least, in CYA mode. Nobody wants to look like the undisputed captain of the proverbial ship, and that's never a good sign. It conjures up older moments where Pelinka's integrity and honesty have been questioned by players, and reportedly by other execs around the NBA, too. And all of this, when you get to other reports about inaction at the deadline and whether the Lakers are truly getting all the big details right, gets to a larger, critical question: How good a GM is Pelinka? It's a conversation happening today, likely to have many other installments going forward. Finally, Frank Vogel was asked about roles at Monday's practice, and how important it is for players to enjoy them in order to embrace them. His answer was interesting, and puts into context what guys like James, Davis, Russell Westbrook and even Austin Reaves have been asked to do this season. HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: There are conflicting reports about whether LA's stars and its management were on the same page last week. Why that matters... SEGMENT 2: Is Rob Pelinka good at his job? SEGMENT 3: Roles, who plays them, and why context matters. A lot. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: There are conflicting reports about whether LA's stars and its management were on the same page last week. Why that matters... SEGMENT 2: Is Rob Pelinka good at his job? SEGMENT 3: Roles, who plays them, and why context matters. A lot. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Lakers GM Rob Pelinka also spoke to media recently and discussed how he feels the Lakers have done this offseason.
