Hellooooooooooo and welcome back to a psychology mama's episode! If you grew up in the '90s or early 2000s, you probably remember it well — low-rise jeans, calorie-counting, and the constant message that thinness equaled beauty, success, and self-worth. Many of us internalised those messages before we even understood them. We learned to shrink ourselves — literally and figuratively — to fit into a version of ‘enough' that was never really about health or happiness. Now, as adults — and for some of us, as parents — we're starting to unlearn it. We're beginning to ask: What if our bodies were never the problem? What if we could break the cycle, not just for ourselves but for the next generation?Thinness was never the real goal — it was approval, love, and belonging. I don't want my child to grow up believing that her body is a problem to be solved. In this episode, we're diving into toxic body culture, the lingering effects of diet culture, the rise of the ‘almond mom,' and what it really means to raise children — and ourselves — in a world that still hasn't made peace with body diversity. I'm not just raising a child. I'm re-raising myself. This is personal, powerful, and deeply necessary. Healing Body Image and Self-Perception After Betrayal   In this episode of the Human Intimacy Podcast, Dr. Kevin Skinner and MaryAnn Michaelis explore how early life experiences, cultural messaging, and exposure to media and pornography shape self-perception and body image—especially after betrayal. They discuss why betrayed partners often feel "not enough," and they share research shows that pornography harms both users' and partners' body image.   The episode offers practical strategies for healing, including gratitude for the body's functionality, redefining beauty beyond appearance, and reconnecting with the joyful, authentic self. This conversation invites listeners to free themselves from harmful comparisons and embrace their inherent worth. Resources Discussed: - Study: The Association of Pornography Use and Body Image Among Heterosexual and Sexual Minority Men (Archives of Sexual Behavior). - Key concepts: Self-perception, media influence, social comparison theory, and gratitude-based body acceptance. —- Did you miss the First Annual Human Intimacy Conference? Body dissatisfaction is something so many women struggle with. And here's the thing: body dissatisfaction is not really about our bodies. It's about the beliefs we've adopted about our bodies. In this episode, I share two stories from my recent marathon training and racing season that reveal how even at our strongest, we can be sidelined by negative body thoughts. We also dig into where body dissatisfaction comes from—how toxic Western diet culture and the media have trained us to value thinness over strength, and how we can start to take an honest inventory of the messages we're consuming daily. Most importantly, I walk you through three mindset tools, grounded in CBT and DBT, to help shift the way you think about your body: Focus on what your body can do, not just how it looks. Recognize the cultural origins of body shame and filter your influences. Practice radical acceptance and values-based living so you can start showing up now, not waiting for “after.” You are more than a number on the scale. Your body is not an ornament—it's an instrument. Let's learn to live like it.

And in this episode of Unleash Your Inner Creative, I'm talking with disability advocate and author Jayne Mattingly about something we don't hear enough about: body grief, and how it can quietly block our creativity and self-love.Here's what I've come to realize: when we lose trust in our bodies, we often lose connection to ourselves and therefore our creative voice. But when we start rebuilding that trust—even slowly—we open the door to healing, peace, and creative freedom.Jayne created a powerful framework to help us understand and move through body grief, and in this episode, she shares her story, how it applies to you, and how getting into a relationship with your body can shift everything—from how you heal to how you create. From this episode, you'll learn:-What body grief is and how to recognize it in your own life-The 7 stages of body grief and how to move through them-How to begin rebuilding trust with your body—at any stage-Why healing your relationship with your body can unlock your creativityTW: Eating Disorders and Mental Health More on JayneUnleash is Nominated for a Webby Award and we need your help to win! Well, it's fall here in New England, which means cooler weather, absolutely beautiful trees, and apple cider!  (And for those of you who love it, pumpkin spice!)  It also means lots and lots of raking is in my future!   And it also means sweater weather!!!!  Yay!!!  So many of my parts love sweater weather.  Throwing on a big cable-knit sweater just feels so cozy.  And I just love fall colors (especially forest green--I can't tell you how many forest green sweaters I have). But do you know another reason why some of my parts love sweater weather?  Because I can hide under sweaters.  Especially ponchos--you can't really tell what my body looks like under a poncho.  And some of my parts are really happy about that.  In my last podcast episode, Amy Pershing shared her incredible wisdom about Binge Eating Disorder.  She also touched on the topic of body shame.  And since healing body shame is, in my opinion, one of the most difficult aspects of this type of work, I thought we should continue the discussion.   In this week's podcast episode, we're exploring all aspects of body shame, starting with what it is (spoiler alert--it's not just negative body image).  We move into a discussion about the difference between parts of us who carry shame about our body (generally exiles) and parts who shame our body as a way of trying to help us (protector parts).  Finally, we end the episode on how to start healing body shame. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make everyone's body shame disappear.  At the very least, I wish I could promise you that this is a quick, easy process.  Unfortunately though, I can't.  But I absolutely do think it's possible to release a lot of this shame and feel much better about and comfortable within your body.  And hopefully, this week's podcast episode will help!  Take a listen!

Ben Oofana is a healer, author, and speaker at Heal Your Body and Mind who specializes in mending bodies, minds, broken hearts, and deep emotional wounds.  Ben describes how he was drawn to indigenous cultures at the young age of 14, he began to study and learn the traditional medical, psychological, and spiritual practices of several different tribes in North America, eventually studying under the last traditional Kiowa doctor (aka Medicine Man). He later went on to train with Chinese Master Sifu Li Tai Liang, incorporating practices that have their roots in the ancient Taoist lineages. He now integrates all of these practices to help people heal their deep emotional wounds while also enabling them to realize their true potential and fulfill their life's purpose. Ben describes his fascinating journey of being embraced by a Native American Medicine Man and entering a world where very few have had the opportunity to see and having the honor of being selected to the man's mentor. During his training, he discovered a whole new world of healing, meditation, self-awareness, and many techniques which helped him through his own path of healing deep emotional wounds he had been carrying with him and disrupting his life.    He shares many valuable tips regarding how to tap into our innate healing intelligence, the power of mindful meditation, how to interrupt patterns of holding in our body, and so much more! Tarek Ali has THAT Conversation with: Dr. Jess, a sharp-witted psychiatrist; Aalim Abdul, Tarek's best friend who also struggled with BD despite being slim; & Emma Hill, a fellow content creator who's no stranger to the body image battlefield, we traverse the rocky terrains of body dysmorphia and self-love. Our stories and insights carve a path for anyone struggling to reconcile with their own reflection, aiming to light the way to a place where self-compassion is your compass, and validation is but a companion, not the guide.Navigating relationships when your self-image wavers like a candle in the wind is a trial many face, yet few speak of with raw honesty. In the warmth of this conversation, we lay bare the emotional scars of past abuse and the often invisible struggle to reclaim our bodies as our own sanctuaries. It's an intimate tango between seeking validation and owning our worth, a dance that often leaves us breathless. The keys to personal growth are many, and while we may fumble to find the right one, we reaffirm here the importance of retaining ownership of our journey—never relenting that power to another's hands. As our dialogue draws to a close, I extend a deep, heartfelt thank you to Aalim, Dr. Jess, and Emma for their vulnerability, which surely echoes in the hearts of many. Through our shared stories, we foster a community that stands in solidarity, a beacon for those sailing the tumultuous seas of self-acceptance. Carry with you the message we hold dear: to treat yourself with the tenderness you deserve. With a promise of continued support and enriching discourse, we eagerly await to welcome you back for more conversations that heal and uplift.

In this episode, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach and journalist Jo Confino talk about healing the body. Brother Phap Huu is back in Plum Village, five weeks after undergoing surgery on one of his knees, ready to discuss dealing with ill health after 21 years as a practitioner of mindfulness. How can we accept what is going on in our bodies but also heal and be present?   The conversation touches upon many relevant topics, such as deep endurance of pain and suffering; being mindful of your body and coming home to it; recognizing ‘the fear’; Thich Nhat Hanh's journey of being in hospital and dealing with health issues (as recalled by his attendants); accepting the present moment; learning to be teachers; impermanence; and more. Because dying – the ‘no birth, no death' – is the insight that there’s always birth and there’s always death in every moment. And that’s why we are ever changing and recognizing that we have to learn to let go of everything we hold dear – even our health. Our true belongings are our actions of body, speech, and mind.” “It’s the cultivation of the practice that allows you – in this difficult time [ill health], when there’s so much energy in the opposite direction – to pull back and rest in that place.” “The only moment we have in life is the present moment. The past will become a memory, will become lessons, will become a legacy. And the future is not yet here. So all we have is the present moment.” “The present moment always teaches us to accept, let go, and embrace and dance with what we have.”

Self-care is a term we hear EVERYWHERE right now, and you've heard me talk about it over and over again. Today's discussion is around the disillusionment of the self-care industry that I'm feeling, along with many others. I'm joined by Taylor Elyse Morrison, the author of Inner Workout: Strengthening Self-Care Practices for Healing Body, Soul, and Mind. Taylor is a founder, facilitator, coach, and serial entrepreneur, and she uses her coaching, mindfulness, and movement training to meet people where they are and offer actionable steps toward avoiding burnout. I'm putting Taylor on the spot by asking questions and picking her brain about common self-care struggles, and she is up for the challenge! Let's see how this turns out! Show Highlights: How the consumeristic quality of today's self-care movement ignores the marginalizations and barriers that many people experience that bring distress and hopelessness Why Taylor urges us to ask, “Is it the Self, or is it the System?” Why Taylor created a self-care assessment to give people “practical starting points” How Taylor's self-care assessment is based on the five yogic dimensions Why self-care is often confused with pleasure as the hard work of self-care is overlooked Why part of self-care is holding onto yourself in the presence of other people Why wisdom is a part of self-care, along with the components of presence, self-trust, and aligned action How curiosity and self-compassion play into effective self-care Why Taylor is satisfied with the feedback she is getting from her book Resources and Links: Connect with Taylor: Website, (Buy her book, take the free self-care assessment, and join her newsletter group.)
