What do we do when we feel stuck? That's the question I'm unpacking in this solo episode of The Rocky Garza Show. If you've ever felt overwhelmed, paralyzed by too many decisions, or just caught in your head, then this is for you.I introduce what I call the Four A Framework—a simple and practical model to help you move from stuck to forward motion. It's not about having all the answers. It's about slowing down long enough to get clarity, take ownership, and move with intention. The Four A's: Awareness, Acceptance, Action, AccountabilityThis episode walks through each step of the 4A Framework:1. AwarenessWe often stop here—asking why something is happening, looking for clarity, understanding, background. And don't get me wrong, awareness is essential. But we live in a world obsessed with being “aware” while rarely moving beyond that.Awareness without action changes nothing. So I ask: are you getting stuck in knowing, but not changing? What's actually true about what you're feeling or facing—not good or bad, just real?2. AcceptanceNext, we ask: what part of this do I need to own?Sometimes it's about owning what isn't in our control. Acceptance isn't surrender—it's clarity. When we can name what's ours and what isn't, we gain power to lead with integrity and direction.I walk through a real-world example of leadership frustration—how assumptions about communication can undermine clarity—and how acceptance bridges the gap.3. ActionThis is where we move. No 90-day plan required. Just one small next step that's aligned with the person you want to become. What's the most authentic action you can take right now? This section is all about reclaiming momentum through simple, aligned decisions.4. AccountabilityChange doesn't last without consistency. Accountability is about creating rhythm, structure, and support around what we say we want.I challenge you to ask: Who knows what I'm working on? How will I track it? When will I review it? Because being reminded of what we want is often what helps us stay the course.Putting the Framework to WorkThis episode isn't just theory—it's a practical invitation. You don't need to overhaul your life. Just pick one thing that's bothering you and walk through the four A's:What am I aware of?What can I accept? What action should I take?Who will help me stay accountable?Whether you're dealing with conflict at work, a breakdown at home, or just an unshakable heaviness, this framework is a tool to help you think differently and lead more intentionally.Resources MentionedIf this resonated with you, I want to invite you to my next free leadership workshop: rockygarza.com/confidenceWe're going deeper into tools like this to help you lead without losing yourself. In this episode of The Rocky Garza Show, I sit down with my friend Matt Plumer—a financial and business coach who helps real estate professionals create real freedom, build wealth, and design lives they actually want to live. We didn't just talk strategy—we got honest about what it takes to lead well when you're in the trenches of building something that matters.Matt is a guy who's created a life that many people want: location freedom, profitable business, Friday golf, and a marriage that matters. But getting there—and staying there—has required some deep internal work, commitment, and daily consistency. And that's what this episode is really about: what does it look like to stay the course even when things are messy?About Matt PlumerMatt Plumer is an Expert Financial and Business Coach, Acclaimed Speaker and Author Transforming Real Estate Success. Matt specializes in empowering real estate agents to create scalable wealth, unlocking true time and money freedom. With his strategic expertise, Matt helps agents build more profitable, sustainable businesses that don't just generate income, but build the dream lifestyles they aspire to.By working with Matt, real estate professionals discover how to grow their profits, scale their businesses, and design a life full of opportunities, financial freedom, and lasting success.Owning Who You Are and Leading Without an AgendaMatt shared a powerful perspective: he sees his purpose as serving the people in front of him, without an agenda. It's a simple but deeply grounded philosophy. And the more he leans into that calling, the more life he gets to live—on his terms. We talked about how that doesn't come without friction. Even when life feels good on the surface—profitable business, great clients, weekly golf—there's still that inner voice asking, “Are we really doing what we're supposed to be doing?”High Activity, Low ProgressWe dove into something I see all the time in entrepreneurs: high activity with low progress. When you try to do it all yourself, it feels like you're doing a lot—but you're actually just moving slower. Or worse, running enthusiastically in the wrong direction.Matt talked about how he's learning to get out of his own way by empowering others, delegating, and focusing on the right wall to lean his ladder against—before climbing it.Stabilize the Present to Structure the FutureMatt's current season is about building something sustainable, not just scalable. After five years of laying the groundwork with hundreds of one-on-one coaching calls, he's now able to say, “Here's the singular target”—and build around it.We explored how focusing on one goal, one offer, and one audience allows you to serve better—and live more clearly. The Phone, the Gym, and the Wake-Up CallOne of the most powerful moments came when Matt shared how distractions—and specifically his phone—were stealing his attention from the people who matter most. He literally got a second phone just for workouts, with only two apps on it, to stay focused. Why? Because his wife Melinda called him out. She asked him the tough question: “What's more important—your phone or me?” And that moment was a turning point. This wasn't about tech or productivity hacks. This was about alignment. And it started with a painful realization that even good intentions don't always align with our values—unless we're willing to confront them.Leadership Starts at HomeWe talked about how the lessons we learn in marriage often translate directly to our businesses. If we violate someone else's values—even unintentionally—we create tension. And the same applies to staff, clients, and community. When we know what people value, we can lead with clarity and authenticity.Matt's story is a reminder that the cost of ignoring that alignment is too high—personally and professionally. What You Tolerate Is What You GetMatt's journey reminded me again: your life, your leadership, and your legacy will always be shaped by what you tolerate. If you want something different, you have to raise your standard. That might mean setting boundaries with your calendar, your team, or your own bad habits. And that shift starts with one simple question: “Am I honoring what I say matters most?”Final ThoughtsMatt's a coach, yes. But he's also a husband, a builder, and someone who's chosen consistency over chaos—even when that means slowing down to speed up.This conversation was a powerful reminder: commitment isn't glamorous. Consistency isn't sexy. But both will change your life.If this episode struck a chord, I'd love to invite you to my upcoming workshop: Lead Without Losing Yourself. We'll dig deeper into the clarity, tools, and strategies you need to lead with purpose and alignment. You can also check out Matt's free eBook at mattplumer.com/ebook to learn more about creating Stress Free Wealth. As always, be seen, be known, and lead well.Until next time—when life gets hard, prove it.Resources Mentionedmattplumer.com/ebook – Download Matt's free ebookrockygarza.com/confidence – Join my free monthly leadership workshopKey Timestamps00:00 Introduction to the Rocky Garza Show00:23 Meet Matt Plumer: Financial and Business Coach00:57 Matt's Journey and Current Challenges02:25 Balancing Business and Personal Life04:46 The Importance of Alignment and Values07:26 Operational Shifts and Future Goals11:08 Managing Distractions and Staying Focused15:59 Personal Reflections and Relationship Insights26:21 Final Thoughts and Workshop InvitationTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this episode of The Rocky Garza Show, I explore a tension I know we've all felt—choosing between emotion and logic. For years, I've heard (and said) that we're either “feelings people” or “facts people.” But what if that's a false choice? What if clarity doesn't come from choosing one over the other—but from learning how to hold space for both?Neither Emotion Nor Logic Has the Whole TruthHere's the truth: your emotions are lying to you—and so is your logic. If we make decisions based only on emotion, we risk being swayed by temporary feelings. If we only rely on logic, we risk ignoring the humanity behind the decision. The result? Half-informed choices. And when we operate that way, we limit our leadership and our lives. In this episode, I challenge the idea that we need to choose a side. Because I believe the real magic happens in the tension between the two.We All Want a Place to LandMost of us find safety in identifying as “logical” or “emotional” because it gives us a tribe, a default. But life is rarely binary. And when we assign ourselves a category, we unconsciously start operating only from that place—even when it no longer serves us.I've lived in both camps. I've made hyper-logical decisions to protect myself. I've made deeply emotional decisions because I didn't know what else to do. Both have value—but neither tells the full story on their own.A Friday Afternoon With My KidsTo bring this to life, I shared a real-world example: Friday afternoons at my house. Logically, it makes sense to knock out all the chores after school. But emotionally, is that what my kids need? After a long week of school, practices, homework, and being “on” all day, is logic what gets us connection? Not usually. And if I lead with logic without emotion in my home, what makes me think I'm doing any better at work? What About Your Team?Think about your team showing up Monday morning. You're ready to run, energized, focused. So you stack meetings. But your team? They're still coming off the weekend. Their minds are scattered. Their energy is different.Have you ever stopped to ask how they feel? Have you created space for both their logic and emotion before expecting peak performance? If we don't lead with that awareness, we lose people—not because we don't care, but because we don't calibrate.Decision-Making in AlignmentI'm not asking you to throw out structure or ignore your intuition. I'm asking you to align the two.If you're overly emotional, add some logic. If you're purely logical, make space for feeling.Let them complement each other, not compete.Because I believe neither emotion nor logic holds the full truth—but together, they reveal what's real.Questions to Ask YourselfWhat is my emotion trying to tell me that logic can't?What is my logic trying to protect that emotion doesn't see?Where can I start practicing this kind of aligned decision-making in my life or business? You don't have to abandon one to embrace the other. You just have to practice using both with intentionality.Final EncouragementIf you're a leader who's struggled to find balance between heart and head, I want you to know: you're not alone. And you're not broken. You're human. That's the gift. This week, I encourage you to make one decision—big or small—from the alignment of your intellect and your emotion. Not just from your instinct. Not just from what looks good on paper. But from what feels real and makes sense. If this episode spoke to you, please share it with your team, your friends, your boss. In this episode of The Rocky Garza Show, I sat down with my good friend Ruben Alvarez—founder of Marketing Hunters, author of Brand Sharks, and someone I deeply respect for his raw honesty and personal evolution. His mantra is clear: sales bring you money, but brand brings you legacy. But today's conversation wasn't about branding. It was about something even deeper—identity, discipline, and what happens when you strip away the noise to finally hear what matters.About Ruben AlvarezRuben Alvarez is the Founder of The Marketing Hunters, a company that specializes in Branding and Market Positioning. His experience in Manufacturing, B2B sales and indirect marketing for nearly a decade allows him to create dynamic and powerful brands for others. Ruben was born in California, but migrated to El Paso when he saw the potential to help the city grow into Texas' next big city. Through events like Thrive IN Your City and The Moment Conference, he has helped bring the business community together to collaborate on the growth that is to come in El Paso.He is the Author of the International Book Brand Sharks: Unstoppable Strategies from Industry Leaders, a book endorsed by Tim Storey. In the book, he encourages new business owners and entrepreneurs to create unfair advantages for themselves. In becoming successful, it is critical to create in the mind of your potential client that you have something unique that cannot be found anywhere else, other than with you. Brand Sharks has been called The #1 Book For Young Entrepreneurs Looking to Grow their Brands.Ruben's story has been featured in Forbes, NY Weekly, El Dario De Queretaro, and many other news outlets for his disruptive Branding methods. What Discipline Really Looks LikeRuben and I dove into what the last year has looked like for him—and it's been a season of real transformation. He's been hitting the gym daily, eating clean, and making hard decisions about what stays and what goes in his life. But he didn't romanticize it. In fact, he admitted that almost every day he still has the same thought: “I don't want to do this.” And yet, he does it anyway. Because it's not about motivation—it's about building the muscle of consistency. That kind of discipline doesn't show up overnight. It's earned.Shifting From Self-Doubt to Self-DisciplineWe talked about the negative loops we've both found ourselves in—thoughts like “Why bother?” or “I'm not good enough.” But Ruben made a point I loved: once he got clear on his why, those thoughts didn't vanish, but they lost their grip. Now, the battle isn't about self-worth—it's about staying committed, even when the feeling isn't there. Because when the why is strong, the resistance becomes background noise.Personal Conviction Meets Professional AmbitionOne of my favorite parts of this episode was exploring the space where personal conviction meets professional ambition. When those two align, that's where the real fuel comes from. For Ruben, that alignment has meant getting serious about his lifestyle—not just for his business, but for the person he's becoming. He's not building a brand—he's building a way of being.Giving Up to GrowOver the last two years, Ruben made some big decisions: he sold his house, gave up expensive habits, and traded comfort for clarity. Not because he had to. But because he chose to.He realized that most of what was “normal” in his life—extra subscriptions, extra responsibilities, extra stuff—was cluttering his mind and stealing his ability to think. And for him, thinking clearly is his edge. So he simplified. He got lean. And he created space to breathe. Why Most People Fail at ChangeWe talked about why 84% of people give up their New Year's resolutions by January 21st. It's not because they lack willpower—it's because they only tried to change the action without changing the thought, the energy, or the focus. But Ruben didn't just change what he was doing. He cleared space to think about why he was doing it. That alignment between what we say we want and what we actually tolerate? That's where real change starts.Your Life Is What You TolerateLet me be real: Ruben hit a point where he had to decide if he was going to keep putting up with things that didn't align with his vision. He made a choice to raise his standards—not out of pride, but out of purpose. He said it perfectly: “Everything around me is either going to step up—or I need to walk away.”That hits. Because whether it's habits, people, or even our own internal patterns—what we tolerate becomes our reality.Breaking Down to Break ThroughRuben shared a moment I won't forget. He told the story of being alone in his garage, going through a divorce, unsure how to make it all work. He put his phone down, hit record, and captured himself crying—because he knew he never wanted to forget what it felt like to break. That moment didn't give him clarity—it gave him the need to create it. And brick by brick, action by action, he started rebuilding. Not from hype. From honesty. The Simpler the Life, the More You Can GiveAt one point, Ruben said:“The less that I need, the more I can give.”That stuck with me. Because when we declutter—our minds, our schedules, our bank accounts—we create space to be generous. To think clearly. To lead well. This episode reminded me: simplicity isn't scarcity. Simplicity is strength. You're Not Leaving People BehindOne of the most powerful truths we landed on was this: when you change your life, you're not “leaving people behind.” You're choosing alignment.Everyone gets to choose their path. And when you choose yours with intention, not everyone will come with you—and that's okay. You don't have to explain yourself. You don't have to apologize. Because when you start living like the person you're becoming, you finally start becoming the person you've been trying to be all along.Resources MentionedJoin my free LIVE leadership workshop: https://www.rockygarza.com/confidenceRuben's website: https://www.themarketinghunters.com/ Ruben's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamrubenalvarez/ Ruben's book: https://www.amazon.com/Brand-Sharks-Unstoppable-Strategies-Industry/dp/B09VWJ6VDN?ref_=ast_author_dp Key Timestamps00:00 – Welcome to The Rocky Garza Show00:10 – Meet Ruben Alvarez, Founder of Marketing Hunters00:23 – Ruben's Story: From El Paso to Branding Legacy01:04 – Sales Brings Money, Brand Brings Legacy02:34 – Starting the Real Conversation03:03 – Discipline Without Desire: Ruben's Gym Journey05:20 – Rewiring the Negative Thought Loop09:33 – Where Personal Conviction Meets Professional Ambition13:32 – Simplicity as a Superpower17:46 – Clarity Through Decluttering18:36 – Tolerating Excellence & Raising Standards21:30 – Choosing the Life You Want (Even If It's Lonely)26:52 – The Breakdown Before the Breakthrough30:08 – Faith Over Friction: Action with Belief32:43 – Closing Thoughts and Workshop InviteTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this solo episode, I'm diving into one of the most consistent frustrations I hear from leaders—especially those managing people. We often confuse someone's actual capacity with the expectations we place on them, and the only thing that fills the gap between the two is disappointment. Let's unpack that.Expectations vs. RealityHave you ever felt frustrated that someone on your team just isn't meeting your expectations—even though you've been crystal clear about what success looks like? I see it constantly in leaders who used to do the job themselves. They assume their experience is the benchmark and forget that others might not be in the same place. If you've ever thought, “I don't get why they can't just do it,” this episode is for you.One Size Doesn't Fit AllI share a story from one of my mastermind group calls where a leader was frustrated that new team members weren't hitting the standard of 50 dials a day. But here's the thing: that might not actually be in their current capacity. I challenged the group to think about what happens when we set expectations without first understanding what someone is truly capable of—especially in their first week.Disappointment Lives in the GapWhen we refuse to adjust expectations based on capacity, we create an environment full of frustration, not growth. It's not just a professional issue either. I get into how this shows up in our relationships, our parenting, and even our marriages. The only thing that lives in the gap between what someone can do and what we expect them to do is disappointment—and that's on us.Real Leadership Looks DifferentThe best leaders I know don't just set high expectations—they take the time to understand their people. They know what motivates them, what they're capable of, and where they want to grow. And then they build systems and standards that reflect that understanding. That's what creates sustainable success.Resources Mentionedrockygarza.com/confidence – Join my next free leadership workshop: Leading Without Losing YourselfFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza/ Key Timestamps00:00 Introduction00:33 The Leadership Pattern of Disappointment01:49 When Expectations Come from Experience03:01 The Gap Between Capacity and Expectation05:05 A Story from My Mastermind Group06:56 What If Your Team Just Isn't There Yet?07:55 How This Shows Up in Relationships Too09:30 Parental Frustration and Developmental Truths10:18 A Better Way to Lead and Set ExpectationsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this episode, I sit down with my longtime online friend turned real-life connection, Tony Sousa. Tony recently made a bold career move—leaving behind nearly two decades in corporate operations to step into full-time entrepreneurship. We dive into what it really feels like to take a leap like that, how to process fear, and why the stories we tell ourselves—and others—shape the results we get in life and business.About TonyTony Sousa is an influential figure in the multifamily housing industry, currently serving as Founder of Sousa Consulting, a branding and operational consulting firm. His career trajectory is marked by a diverse array of roles, including experiences as a TV journalist, teacher, and actor, which have collectively enriched his approach to marketing and operations within the real estate sector. Tony is also recognized for his thought leadership, frequently sharing insights on operations, technology, and culture within the industry. His background in journalism and acting enhances his storytelling abilities, allowing him to effectively engage audiences across various platforms.Taking the LeapTony shares what it was like to walk away from a stable, successful corporate career and bet fully on himself. From years in multifamily operations and brand work to launching his own consultancy, he talks about what finally pushed him to make the jump—and why it had less to do with business strategy and more to do with emotional readiness.Reframing the NarrativeAt one point, Tony called his transition a “freefall.” I challenged that. What if it's not a freefall at all, but a clear, intentional step forward—one built on decades of preparation? We talked about how important it is to change the way we talk to ourselves during big transitions. Because the truth is, success doesn't come from avoiding failure—it comes from becoming exactly who we were made to be.Relevance, Not Just RevenueTony's passion is helping brands tell a better story. But not just any story—the story of relevance. We talked about how companies often think they know their story, but what they're actually doing is telling outdated origin tales instead of leaning into the narrative that drives their future. He's not just about innovation—he's about helping people connect with decision-makers through real, emotional connection. The Deeper WhyIn one of the most moving parts of the episode, Tony opened up about his son Rocco, who has Down syndrome. He shared his vision for one day being on stage with his son, sharing a message about identity, purpose, and the refusal to let anyone tell you who you can or cannot be. I was deeply moved—and reminded again of the power we have when we hold both ambition and conviction in the same hand.Resources MentionedConnect with Tony Sousa on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tonysousa/Tony's website: https://tony-sousa.com/ rockygarza.com/confidence – Join my next workshop: Leading Without Losing YourselfKey Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome00:17 Tony's Career Transition01:09 Embracing Entrepreneurship02:27 Challenges and Mindset Shifts04:01 Emotional Readiness and Support04:53 Learning and Growth in a New Venture07:55 Innovative Strategies in Traditional Industries13:15 The Power of Storytelling21:40 Personal Reflections and Encouragement25:46 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this solo episode, Rocky dives deep into the uncomfortable—yet universal—feeling of doubt. Whether you're facing imposter syndrome, second-guessing your leadership, or wondering if you're making it up as you go, this short but powerful reflection will help you see doubt in a new light. What if doubt isn't the problem? What if it's the proof you care? Rocky explores how doubt can actually signal conviction, guide growth, and become a tool for clarity rather than a reason to pull back.He also shares how The Confidence Method and his free resource, The Impostor Within, can help you reframe internal stories and use doubt to propel yourself forward—with belief, not fear. What You'll Learn:Why doubt is not weakness—it's a sign of what you care about mostThe difference between confidence and certaintyHow to stop trying to “get rid” of doubt and instead learn to live with itWhy the stories we tell ourselves are often more powerful than the stories told to usA practical way to rewrite your internal narrative using The Confidence MethodResources & Links:
For so long, we've been taught that discipline is everything—that if we just work harder, grind longer, and stay laser-focused, we will never fail. But here's the problem: too much discipline can lead to rigidity, missed opportunities, and burnout. What if I told you that flexibility is just as important as discipline—maybe even more important at times? For years, I believed that if I just stayed disciplined enough, I wouldn't fail. If I could just wake up earlier, work longer hours, and stick to the plan no matter what, success would be guaranteed. But over time, I've realized that many of my biggest breakthroughs didn't come from grinding harder. They came from being adaptable, from being willing to change course when necessary. The False Association Between Discipline and SuccessDiscipline often gets tied to grinding, sacrifice, and doing all the things you don't enjoy while ignoring the things that bring you joy. Many of us have been conditioned to believe that if we fail, it's because we weren't disciplined enough.“I have to get more disciplined. I have to do more.”But what I've found is that when people say they need more discipline, they often mean they need to do more of the things they don't actually want to do. The real problem isn't a lack of discipline—it's a lack of alignment with what we truly want. The Cost of Rigid DisciplineHow often have you seen someone set an ambitious goal—whether in business, fitness, or personal growth—only to burn out within a few weeks?Take fitness, for example. At the start of the year, we set resolutions:Wake up at 5:30 AM.Get in all my steps.Count every macro.Hit my protein and water intake. We stack all these habits together and go full speed ahead. Then, about three weeks in, we stop. Studies show that 84% of people quit their New Year's resolutions by January 21st. Why? Because we go from zero to 100, and the moment we slip, we feel like we've failed entirely."I missed a workout, so I might as well quit." "I broke my diet, so I might as well give up."This all-or-nothing mindset kills momentum. But life isn't about rigid streaks—it's about the continue, not the restart. The Balance Between Discipline and FlexibilitySo how do we hold the tension between discipline and flexibility? It starts with realizing that discipline should create structure, not suffocation.Let me give you an example. I set a goal this year to increase my strength:Bench press 225 lbsSquat 315 lbsDeadlift 405 lbsTo hit those numbers, I calculated that I need to lift weights 208 times in 2025—about 4 workouts per week. That means there are 157 days in the year where I won't lift weights. That's the key: structure with flexibility. There's space for life, for adapting, for living in the continue. The Danger of an All-or-Nothing MentalityMany of us operate with an all-or-nothing mentality:If I miss a business meeting, my company will collapse. If we skip date night once, our marriage is doomed. If I don't follow my diet perfectly, my health will suffer. But that's not how life works. The truth is, life is lived in the continue. When we create rigid systems, we set ourselves up for failure. When we allow for flexibility, we create sustainable success. The Power of Iterative ChangeThe most successful people aren't those who never deviate from a plan—they're the ones who know when to pivot.Business owners adjust their strategies based on market needs.Athletes modify their training based on progress and injury.Leaders adapt their communication styles based on their teams. If you're holding onto a plan, ask yourself:Am I holding onto this because it's truly the best option?Or am I afraid to let go?Success isn't about more, more, more discipline. It's about knowing when to double down and when to pivot.Building Adaptive Systems for GrowthDiscipline alone won't create success. Your ability to stay flexible, pivot when necessary, and adapt as you grow is what will set you apart.Instead of chasing perfection, build systems that allow for flexibility. Create habits that support your goals while leaving room for the unexpected.Final Thoughts & Call to ActionThis week, challenge yourself to:Reflect on your current plans—Are they serving you, or are you serving them?Ask yourself, “What's one way I could approach this differently?”Prioritize progress over perfection—The goal isn't to get it right 100% of the time. The goal is to keep going.Lead with discipline, but don't forget to make room for flexibility. The key to lasting success isn't rigidity—it's resilience.Resources MentionedTake the Influence Appraisal Quiz at: rockygarza.com/influence.Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza/ Key Timestamps00:00 Setting Ambitious Fitness Goals 05:41 Creating a Workout Regimen 06:36 Balancing Discipline and Flexibility 07:12 Overcoming the All-or-Nothing Mentality 08:33 Adapting and Iterating for Success 09:03 Reflecting on Your Plans and Decisions 09:55 Building Adaptive Systems 10:07 Final Thoughts and EncouragementTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations

How does someone at her level—leading a major publication and shaping conversations about achievement—still struggle with self-doubt? And more importantly, how do we overcome it?This episode is packed with raw honesty, personal insights, and actionable takeaways. Let's dive in.About Kerrie Lee Brown Kerrie Lee Brown is an award-winning journalist, media executive, consultant and women's health advocate. But as Kerrie shares, imposter syndrome doesn't go away just because we achieve more. It evolves.Kerrie reflects on moments in her career when she felt she wasn't the "main pick," even though, in hindsight, she clearly had what it took. The pressure to always prove her worth—to live up to expectations—was ingrained from childhood. Raised in a high-achievement, competitive environment, she felt the need to constantly win, succeed, and never depend on anyone else. The irony? The very drive that made her successful was also the source of her self-doubt.The Pressure of PerfectionAs a journalist and editor, Kerrie was trained to scrutinize details, making perfectionism a daily reality. In her world, a single typo or factual error could be devastating. Over time, this cultivated an inner voice of self-criticism, reinforcing the idea that one mistake could ruin everything. She describes the duality of being perceived as someone who “always got the job, the recognition, the success”—while internally feeling the pressure to maintain that image. Even with public praise, the imposter within whispered otherwise.Balancing Professional and Personal LifeImposter syndrome doesn't just affect work—it spills into our personal lives. As a mother of two boys, Kerrie shares how she constantly wonders: Am I doing this right? She grew up in a household of women, so raising boys felt unfamiliar. Despite her best efforts, there are moments of doubt—because parenting, like leadership, comes with no perfect blueprint. Her insight? We all go through it. The key is recognizing that worthiness isn't about perfection—it's about embracing who you truly are.Redefining Success and Self-WorthKerrie admits that, for years, her identity was tied to her job title. She was “Editor-in-Chief” first, Kerrie Lee second. This created an inner conflict: Am I successful because of my title? Or because of who I am?That realization led to self-reflection—and a shift in how she defines success. Instead of measuring worth by external labels, she began embracing her internal value.Lesson: You are not your job title. You are not your achievements. You are worthy—simply because you are YOU.Embracing Uniqueness and TruthOne of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that self-clarity leads to self-confidence.Many of us have been conditioned to believe that success comes from meeting external expectations—whether it's parents, society, or the workplace. But the true breakthrough happens when we define success for ourselves. For Kerrie, that meant embracing her unique gifts—her ability to tell powerful stories, her open-mindedness, and her passion for helping others. The imposter syndrome didn't disappear—but she learned to challenge it with truth. The Power of WordsThroughout the conversation, one theme kept coming up: words matter. The words we say to ourselves shape our beliefs. The words we say to others impact their confidence. The words we accept from society influence how we see ourselves.Kerrie recalls a time when someone told her she was "too positive on social media." The comment made her second-guess herself—until she realized:Why would positivity ever be a bad thing?People's judgments are often projections of their own insecurities. If someone sees positivity as “fake,” it likely has more to do with their experiences than with you.Lesson: The stories people tell about you say more about them than they do about you.Stories We Tell OurselvesRocky breaks down a powerful truth:We often define ourselves by the stories we've been told about us—rather than the truth of who we are.For years, Kerrie was told:"You're a high achiever." (So she felt she had to be.)"You're always successful." (So failure felt unacceptable.)"You're just a magazine editor." (So she wondered if her identity was tied to her job.)But when we step back and rewrite our own narrative, we take back control.Impact of Words on OthersRocky shares a personal parenting moment—when he unknowingly told his son a story about himself that wasn't true. In a split-second reaction, he made his son feel like his enthusiasm didn't matter. That one interaction made him realize: the way we speak to people—especially in leadership and parenting—shapes their confidence. The same is true for leaders in the workplace. Are we fostering environments where people feel heard, valued, and encouraged—or are we reinforcing self-doubt?Personal Truths and Open-MindednessTo close, Kerrie shares her personal truth:“I am open-minded.”That openness allows her to:See multiple perspectives.Grow through new experiences.Adapt in both personal and professional life. Her realization? Openness is not just a trait—it's a strength.Final Thoughts: Lead Like YOU, Not Like ThemThe imposter within is something we all face. But the way we talk to ourselves, redefine our worth, and embrace our unique traits determines whether that imposter controls us—or fuels our growth.Takeaway: You don't have to be “good enough.” You already ARE good.Resources Mentioned:Take the Influence Appraisal Quiz at: rockygarza.com/influence.Key Timestamps00:00 Introduction to The Rocky Garza Show00:06 Meet Kerrie Lee Brown: Success Magazine's Editor-in-Chief00:47 Diving into Imposter Syndrome02:39 Kerrie Lee's Personal Journey03:54 The Pressure of Perfection07:16 Balancing Professional and Personal Life09:37 Redefining Success and Self-Worth13:41 Embracing Uniqueness and Truth16:56 Embracing Intensity17:48 Self-Clarity and Confidence19:08 Navigating Journalism and Personal Identity20:44 The Power of Words21:31 Stories We Tell Ourselves24:15 Impact of Words on Others28:28 Personal Truths and Open-Mindedness30:05 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
The Myth of Loud ConfidenceWhy is it that the loudest person in the room is rarely the most confident? We often equate confidence with certainty—believing that the person who speaks the loudest or most assertively must know what they're talking about. But in reality, true confidence isn't about proving you're right. It's about understanding that you don't always have to be.Confidence and humility are often framed as opposites, but they are actually two sides of the same coin. While society tends to associate confidence with being outspoken, real confidence is about knowing your worth, even when you admit you don't have all the answers.Redefining HumilityHumility is not about making yourself small or hiding your greatness. Instead, it is the full awareness of your abilities and the conscious decision to use them only when necessary.“Humility is not the hiding of your greatness. It is the full awareness of everything that makes you great—and the ability to consciously choose when you will or will not use it.”For years, I believed confidence meant always having an answer, always speaking first, and always proving a point. But the older I get, the more I realize that the people I respect the most aren't those who are always right. Instead, they are the ones most willing to say, “I don't know.”Confidence isn't about never being wrong. It's about knowing that being wrong doesn't change your worth.A Personal Story of ChangeA year and a half ago, I was visiting some long-time friends in Los Angeles. As we were sitting around talking, one of them stopped me mid-conversation and asked, “Why aren't you taking the bait?”Confused, I asked what they meant. They explained that they had been intentionally making provocative comments—ones they knew I would normally challenge in the past. But this time, I hadn't reacted. Instead, I had simply listened. At first, their observation caught me off guard. I had always been the one to argue, to prove a point, to jump into a debate. But something had shifted in me. I realized that my confidence was no longer tied to proving myself right. Instead, it was about being secure enough to truly listen.I didn't need to “win” the conversation. I needed to understand it.The Cost of False ConfidenceThere's a hidden cost to false confidence—the kind that is rooted in ego rather than truth. In workplaces and leadership, this can manifest in several ways:A culture where no one speaks up out of fear of challenging the “confident” person.Decisions made based on volume and authority rather than wisdom and collaboration.A lack of trust in leadership because no one admits when they're wrong. Many leaders struggle to acknowledge their mistakes because they fear it will make them appear weak or incompetent. But in reality, the most trusted leaders are those who own their failures and invite others into the problem-solving process.Collaborative LeadershipTrue confidence in leadership isn't about having all the answers—it's about creating an environment where better answers can emerge through collaboration. One organization I've seen do this well is Zillow. I've been in meetings, retreats, and discussions with their team, and I rarely see leaders operate with an “I'm always right” mentality. Instead, they foster an environment where ideas are openly shared, challenged, and refined. When leadership is built on collaboration rather than control, the result is not just a stronger team, but a more innovative and effective one.Practicing Humble ConfidenceIf you want to develop a confidence that is secure rather than loud, here are a few practices to try:Say “I don't know” more often. It doesn't make you incompetent—it makes you real.Ask more questions. Instead of proving a point, seek to understand someone else's.Pay attention to your volume. Are you speaking to be heard, or to contribute meaningfully?Reflect on your motivations. Are you holding onto a belief because it's true, or because you don't want to admit you might be wrong? The loudest person in the room isn't always the most confident. More often, they are the most insecure. The real test of confidence is whether you can acknowledge when you don't know something—and whether you can invite other people's opinions even when you do know something.Confidence isn't about defending yourself. It's about being secure enough that you don't need to defend anything. If you find yourself resisting change, ask yourself:Am I speaking to prove something, or to learn something?Am I holding onto my position because it's true, or because I don't want to be seen as wrong? Is my ego getting in the way of truth?Challenge yourself this week to practice humility. Instead of leading with certainty, lead with curiosity. Instead of striving to be right, strive to understand. The leaders we trust most don't create environments of certainty—they create environments of growth.Resources MentionedTake the free Influence Appraisal: rockygarza.com/influenceFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza/ Key Timestamps00:00 The Myth of Loud Confidence02:37 Redefining Humility04:06 A Personal Story of Change06:52 The Cost of False Confidence08:04 Collaborative Leadership09:48 Practicing Humble Confidence10:36 Conclusion and Call to ActionTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
Welcome to The Rocky Garza Show, where I dive deep into the truths that shape extraordinary leaders. In today's episode, I have a powerful conversation with Edward Pritchett, and trust me—you don't want to miss this one.We explored what it truly means to create generational wealth, but even more importantly, what it means to be a generational breaker. Edward opened up about how he's using his life experiences to build the future he envisions, not just as a business owner but as a father and husband. What struck me most is that we didn't even focus on the success of his multimillion-dollar business. Instead, Edward shared the deeply personal struggles he still faces daily in order to lead the life he wants. He's learned that true success isn't just about revenue—it's about measuring impact, influence, and presence. This conversation is packed with raw honesty, actionable insights, and a perspective that challenges the way we define leadership. Let's dive in.About EdwardEdward Pritchett is a serial entrepreneur, financial expert, and insurance industry leader based in Dorado, Puerto Rico with his home office in Asheville, North Carolina. As a Managing Partner at Symmetry Financial Group and founder of the Pritchett Agency, Edward has empowered countless insurance agents to build thriving businesses while serving their clients with integrity and excellence. His innovative marketing strategies, passion for mentorship, and commitment to community have made him a sought-after voice in the industry.Beyond his work in insurance, Edward is the founder of the Camilla Foundation, which focuses the support of orphanages around the world and nursing education in Western NC, and co-founder of Boundless Properties, a real estate developer. Both of these organizations were instrumental in spearheading relief efforts after Hurricane Helene, helping the Western North Carolina community recover and rebuild.Edward's entrepreneurial spirit is complemented by his educational background at Yale and his desire for creating meaningful connections. He frequently shares insights on leadership, financial independence, and team-building on his YouTube channel, Life Insurance Today, and social media platforms. In his free time, Edward enjoys exploring the world, spending time with his family, and doing something physical, which sometimes includes eating a delicious meal. He is also the author of Tax-Free Living, a guide to legally minimizing taxes while maximizing wealth and legacy.Edward's Background and Early LifeEdward was born in Mobile, Alabama, in a family rich in wisdom but lacking financial stability. His childhood was filled with love and strong values, but there was always a missing piece. He remembers moments where, despite having supportive parents and siblings, financial struggle was a constant reality. One defining memory was shopping at Payless while classmates wore Nike sneakers—drawing his own swoosh on knockoff shoes to fit in. It wasn't about material things; it was about feeling different, about wanting more than what his circumstances allowed. That experience planted a seed. He wanted to break the cycle. But for years, he didn't know how.Realizing the Missing PieceAs Edward grew older, he became immersed in personal development—reading books, setting goals, creating vision boards. He thought he was following the right steps, yet success wasn't showing up the way he expected. He blamed external factors. He assumed others had the real secret and weren't sharing it. This mindset stuck with him through college and into his early career. Then the Great Recession hit. It was a turning point. He lost his job and, instead of blaming the economy, he finally asked himself the hard question:What am I missing?A mentor challenged him to stop waiting for success to come to him and start making it happen through him. That shift—from entitlement to responsibility—changed everything.Breaking Generational CursesEdward learned that breaking cycles isn't just about money. Generational curses come in many forms—mindset, habits, limiting beliefs. He had to change not just how he worked, but how he thought. He realized that success isn't about following a script. It's about ownership. It's about recognizing blind spots and actively filling the gaps. That's how he moved from struggle to building a life of abundance—not just financially, but in every area of life.Balancing Family and AmbitionOne of Edward's biggest ongoing challenges isn't financial—it's balancing ambition with his role as a husband and father. For years, he believed that providing financially was enough. If he worked hard and built wealth, his family would be taken care of. But he soon realized that his presence mattered far more than his paycheck. His wife confronted him about it. His kids were growing up, and while he was “working for them,” he wasn't with them. That moment forced him to reassess his priorities. Now, he approaches work and family differently:He doesn't let his work drain all his energy before he gets home.He involves his wife in planning his travel schedule. He prioritizes quality family time, ensuring his kids don't feel like second place to his business.Setting and Achieving Personal GoalsEdward believes in setting goals beyond financial success. Six years ago, he adopted a structured goal-setting system across four areas:Career Goals – Business and financial growth.Personal Goals – Developing as a leader, husband, and father.Adventure Goals – Creating memorable life experiences.Contribution Goals – Giving back and making an impact. One of his major personal goals this year? Becoming fluent in Spanish. He's actively working on it through daily practice, tutoring, and immersion opportunities. He and his wife also take an annual retreat to align their goals as a couple—ensuring they're building their life together, not just existing side by side.Final Thoughts and ReflectionsEdward's story is a reminder that success isn't just about revenue or achievements—it's about alignment between conviction and ambition.I want you to ask yourself:Am I allowing ambition to overshadow what truly matters?Am I chasing success out of passion, or am I running from failure?Where do I need to redefine what “winning” looks like?Ambition alone won't create a fulfilling life. The key is clarity—knowing why you're chasing your goals and ensuring they align with what truly matters.Resources MentionedEdward's website: https://pritchettagency.com/ Follow Edward: @iamedwardpritchettEdward's Facebook https://www.facebook.com/PritchettAgency/ Join my upcoming free LIVE workshop: Leading Without Losing YourselfKey Timestamps00:00 Introduction to the Rocky Garza Show01:56 Edward Pritchett's Background and Early Life04:59 Realizing the Missing Piece07:46 Breaking Generational Curses13:58 Balancing Family and Ambition22:50 Setting and Achieving Personal Goals33:19 Final Thoughts and ReflectionsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
Welcome to The Rocky Garza Show. Today, I'm exploring the tension between ambition and conviction—more specifically, the tension between personal conviction and professional ambition. These two truths often feel like they exist in opposition, but if we can hold them together, we might just find the clarity we've been searching for.The Conflict Between Personal Conviction and Professional AmbitionAmbition isn't the problem, but the way we chase it can be. Many of us separate our work life and personal life, believing that we must choose between professional success and personal values. This mindset turns ambition into a crisis—an identity conflict where we question whether we should pursue greatness or stay rooted in our personal beliefs. The key isn't balancing ambition and conviction but finding their intersection. When ambition is unanchored, it leads to burnout. When conviction is too rigid, it can hold us back from necessary growth. The challenge is discovering how they can coexist.Personal Experiences and StrugglesFor most of my life, I struggled to balance being a husband, father, business owner, and individual all at once. I feared success more than failure because I was afraid of what success might turn me into.I had never seen a man successfully build a thriving business while being fully present for his family and community. Every example I had of success seemed to come at the cost of relationships. That fear made me resist ambition, even when it aligned with my convictions. Many of us spend so much time trying not to be something that we forget to step fully into who we're meant to be. Instead of pushing toward a personal vision, we get stuck running away from a fear.Redefining Work-Life BalanceThe phrase "work-life balance" can be misleading. Instead of balance, what if we embraced work-life tension?Rather than dividing life into "work" and "personal," what if we simply called it life? The goal isn't to force an equal split but to integrate ambition and conviction in a way that feels sustainable and meaningful. One of the biggest questions I've had to ask myself is:Does my fear of failure impact how I see success?Am I resisting ambition because I think it will change me?Am I running toward something or just running away from something? The tension between ambition and conviction isn't something to fight—it's something to hold. The Role of Leadership and Organizational CultureI see this struggle in business all the time, particularly in leadership roles. Many leaders believe they must always be:The first one in and the last one out.The one who always works late to prove dedication. The one who takes full responsibility for the team's success or failure. While these habits can be beneficial, they are not sustainable unless rooted in clarity. A great leader sets clear boundaries, knowing that:Presence and ambition are not mutually exclusive.Success doesn't have to come at the cost of personal well-being.A culture of balance leads to more effective long-term results.Companies that thrive are the ones that hold ambition in one hand and conviction in the other, allowing their people to operate in the tension between the two.Finding Clarity in Ambition and ConvictionAmbition doesn't have to control us—it needs to be redefined. The goal isn't balance—it's clarity. The goal isn't work-life separation—it's work-life integration. The goal isn't choosing conviction or ambition—it's allowing both to exist together.Ask yourself:Where am I allowing ambition to overshadow conviction?Where am I letting conviction hold me back from necessary ambition?Am I pursuing ambition out of a genuine desire, or am I afraid of failure?Ambition isn't dangerous when held with conviction. It becomes a tool for meaningful impact when properly aligned with who you are and what you believe.Resources MentionedFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza/ Register your spot for the FREE Leading Without Losing Yourself Workshop – rockygarza.com/confidenceKey Timestamps00:00 Introduction to Ambition and Conviction00:28 The Conflict Between Personal Conviction and Professional Ambition01:29 Personal Experiences and Struggles02:30 Redefining Work-Life Balance06:18 The Role of Leadership and Organizational Culture08:58 Finding Clarity in Ambition and Conviction10:29 Conclusion and Next StepsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
Welcome to The Rocky Garza Show. Today, I have a very special guest—someone who is not only incredibly smart and talented but also family. My brother-in-law, Jared Thornhill, joins me to discuss health, longevity, and proactive wellness.About JaredJared is the owner of Thornhill's Pharmacy, with 2 locations in Lubbock & Shallowater, Texas. Their primary focus and drive is to help people live a healthy, fulfilling life through education and supplementation.Discussing Health and Fitness ImportanceMany high performers, business owners, and leaders struggle with maintaining their health while managing their responsibilities. Over the past two years, I've noticed changes in my own energy and motivation. Jared and I dive into how to prioritize health in a sustainable and realistic way.Jared's Background and Personal Health JourneyJared and his wife own two pharmacies in West Texas. His perspective on healthcare shifted dramatically after two life-changing events:COVID-19, which made him rethink mainstream health advice. His father's sudden health decline, which highlighted the importance of preventative care.Seeing his father go from being highly active to relying on multiple medications in a short span of time pushed Jared to re-evaluate health from a proactive perspective. The Five Pillars of HealthJared emphasizes five key health pillars, ranked in order of importance:Sleep – The foundation of all health.Hydration – Essential for overall function.Diet – Fueling the body with quality food.Exercise – Movement for longevity.Supplements – Filling in the gaps when necessary.Deep Dive into SleepSleep is the most important health factor. Without it, mental, physical, and emotional well-being suffer.Natural melatonin production is triggered by sunlight exposure.Reducing screen time before bed can improve sleep quality.Supplements like magnesium, L-theanine, GABA, and melatonin can support relaxation.Hydration EssentialsWater is crucial, but electrolyte balance matters, too.Drinking excessive plain water can dilute essential minerals in the body.Adding electrolytes like LMNT or Nuun improves hydration.Salt is not the enemy—it helps maintain proper balance if kidneys are functioning well.Diet and Nutrition InsightsModern diets are fueling a health crisis, particularly in children.Balanced intake of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs is key.Processed sugars and fast food contribute to diabetes and metabolic dysfunction. The focus should be on sustainable, long-term nutrition, not fad diets.Exercise and Physical ActivityMovement is essential but doesn't have to be extreme.15 minutes of daily movement is better than nothing.Exercise isn't about aesthetics—it's about longevity and independence as we age.Functional fitness, like being able to carry groceries or play with grandkids, should be the goal.Resources Mentioned: For those ready to optimize their health, Jared recommends three key supplements:Vitamin D3 + K2 – Supports bone health, immune function, and longevity.High-quality Fish Oil (EPA/DHA) – Reduces inflammation, supports brain health, and improves cardiovascular function.Probiotics – Maintains gut health, which impacts digestion, immunity, and overall well-being.Health isn't about perfection—it's about proactive choices. Start small, focus on consistency, and build habits over time.Choose one area to improve this week.Prioritize longevity over short-term gains.Your body is your most valuable investment—take care of it.If you're looking for high-quality supplements, check out the links in the show notes for Jared's recommendations.Key Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Special Guest Announcement00:19 Discussing Health and Fitness Importance01:14 Jared's Background and Personal Health Journey04:46 The Five Pillars of Health05:47 Deep Dive into Sleep10:37 Hydration Essentials14:25 Diet and Nutrition Insights19:25 Exercise and Physical Activity22:08 Top Supplements to Consider24:59 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
Welcome to The Rocky Garza Show, where I explore the truths that shape extraordinary leaders. Today, I'm diving into the tension between conviction and curiosity—two ideas that often seem at odds but, when held together, can provide the clarity we're all seeking. The Tension Between Conviction and CuriosityI've learned the hard way that just because I'm convinced I'm right, doesn't mean I actually am.Conviction and curiosity seem like opposites, but I believe our strongest convictions often come from moments of deep curiosity.Real clarity happens when I allow these two truths to exist together.Personal Experiences and Lessons LearnedWhen I assume I already know, when I only talk to myself, or when I surround myself with people who think like me—I end up wrong.I've learned this lesson most often in marriage, parenting, and business. When I hold onto my beliefs too tightly without curiosity, I miss out on better solutions.Conviction and Curiosity in RelationshipsI've seen this play out in my marriage. My default is to assume I'm right, but every time I make space for curiosity, the outcome is better. If I want stronger relationships, I have to balance standing firm in my values with being open to learning from others.Identity and the Need to Be RightIf I'm being honest, my need to be right is often about something deeper.Sometimes, I fear that if I'm wrong, I'll be seen as weak, unworthy, or unlovable.Am I chasing rightness because I believe it equals security?Conviction and Curiosity in BusinessI recently coached a high-level sales leader who struggles between confidence and asking for help. She fears that if she asks for help, she'll look weak—but if she doesn't, she risks burnout.True leadership isn't about knowing everything—it's about being confident in my abilities while also staying open to learning. The Importance of Curiosity in InnovationInnovation depends on curiosity. When a company is clear on its mission, vision, and values (conviction), it can still adapt and grow (curiosity).I've seen organizations thrive when they get this balance right.Practical Steps to Embrace CuriosityInstead of asking “Am I right?” I now ask “What do I not know?”I try to ask more questions than I give answers.Instead of saying “Why?” I say “Tell me about that”—it completely changes the conversation.Key TakeawaysConviction and curiosity aren't opposites—they work best together. My need to be right is often rooted in my need for validation.Great leadership means being both confident and open to help.Growth in business and relationships requires curiosity and the willingness to see new perspectives.Asking better questions leads to better connections and decisions.Key Quotes"I can be 100% right and still be wrong.""Conviction without curiosity leads to stagnation.""The tension between conviction and curiosity isn't something to solve—it's something to hold.""Sometimes, being right isn't as important as being open.""If I only listen to people who think like me, I'll never grow beyond what I already know.""Curiosity fuels innovation, and conviction keeps me grounded."Resources MentionedFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza/ Join me for my upcoming workshop, Leading Without Losing Yourself, where I'll share practical strategies to lead with confidence and purpose: rockygarza.com/confidenceKey Timestamps00:00 Introduction to Conviction and Curiosity00:23 The Tension Between Conviction and Curiosity01:38 Personal Experiences and Lessons Learned02:19 Conviction and Curiosity in Relationships02:58 Identity and the Need to Be Right05:26 Conviction and Curiosity in Business07:16 The Importance of Curiosity in Innovation07:56 Practical Steps to Embrace Curiosity10:03 Conclusion and Call to ActionTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations

In this episode, I take a hard look at the behaviors we tolerate in ourselves and others, both at home and in the workplace. Culture, whether in your company or your family, isn't what you say—it's what you allow. Today, we're focusing on how to align our actions with our values and how tolerating the wrong behaviors can undermine our goals, systems, and ultimately, our success.Rethinking Goals and SystemsWe often focus on the outcome—our goals—without addressing the daily systems required to achieve them. I share insights inspired by James Clear's Atomic Habits and emphasize the importance of systems over lofty aspirations. Goals are merely the result of consistent action, not standalone achievements. The 30-Day No Yelling ChallengeI dive into a personal story about a 30-day no yelling challenge and how setting a system for behavior aligns with the goal of creating a more harmonious home. The focus isn't perfection but consistent progress toward being the person I want to be—both for myself and my family.Aligning Personal and Family BehaviorHow can we expect certain behaviors from our children or family members if we don't hold ourselves to the same standard? I challenge listeners to examine the behaviors they tolerate in themselves and how that impacts their ability to set an example at home.Workplace Behavior and CultureIn the workplace, culture isn't defined by mission statements or posters on the wall—it's defined by the behaviors we tolerate. I ask leaders to reflect on their teams: Are you tolerating toxic behavior from “good performers”? Are your actions aligned with your organizational values? Leadership requires modeling the behavior you expect from others.Key TakeawaysGoals are achieved through systems, not wishful thinking. The behavior you tolerate in yourself sets the tone for what you accept from others.Culture, at home or work, is shaped by actions, not declarations. It's essential to address toxic behaviors, even from high performers, for the greater good of the organization.Key Quotes"Culture isn't what you pontificate—it's what you tolerate.""You can't expect others to meet a standard you're not willing to uphold yourself.""Goals are the result of consistent daily actions, not a declaration.""Leadership is an action, not a title."Resources MentionedBook Recommendation: Atomic Habits by James ClearExplore Leadership Tools: Visit RockyGarza.com/thepathKey Timestamps00:00 Introduction to the Rocky Garza Show00:03 Rethinking Goals and Systems01:08 The 30-Day No Yelling Challenge02:25 Aligning Personal and Family Behavior04:12 Workplace Behavior and Culture05:25 Conclusion and Call to ActionTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations

What if I told you that the culture in your workplace—or even in your home—isn't what you say it is? It's what you allow it to be. Culture isn't defined by the posters on the walls, the mission statements, or even the rules we declare. It's shaped by the behaviors and attitudes we tolerate. Today, I'll dive into how this concept affects our leadership, workplaces, and personal lives, and why it's essential to align what we tolerate with the culture we truly want.Culture vs. ExpectationsCulture is not built on lofty declarations or values we aspire to achieve. While these aspirations set a standard, the actual culture reflects what we accept and allow. If there's a gap between the behaviors we permit and the values we claim, the true culture always aligns with what we tolerate. The Role of Tolerated BehaviorsTolerated behaviors create the foundation for culture, whether positive or negative. Unchecked actions—whether in a team, at home, or in personal relationships—can lead to dysfunction and misalignment. Leadership involves actively addressing these behaviors, not just setting high expectations.Personal Reflection on Tolerance at HomeParenting often serves as a mirror for leadership. In my own life, as my kids grow and test boundaries, I've seen the importance of not just stating what's acceptable but consistently enforcing it. Similarly, in teams, it's not enough to say “this isn't okay”; we must actively address and redirect behaviors to align with our desired culture.Unchecked Behavior and Leadership ChallengesToxicity in teams arises when poor behavior goes unchecked, often because leaders avoid hard conversations. Whether due to long-standing relationships, fear of confrontation, or lack of clarity, ignoring these issues undermines the integrity of the culture. True leadership requires courage to address these challenges.Auditing and Modeling BehaviorLeadership begins with auditing the behaviors we allow, not just the words we say. How often do we hold ourselves and others accountable? How often do we model the standards we expect? Leadership is action—it's visible, consistent, and intentional.Proactive vs. Reactive LeadershipReactive leadership responds to problems as they arise, while proactive leadership anticipates and prevents them. Proactive leaders model and enforce boundaries, fostering a culture of alignment and clarity. The path to proactive leadership begins with asking what you are currently tolerating and how it affects your team or home environment.Key TakeawaysCulture is Action: It's not defined by statements but by what we allow.Audit Your Environment: Assess what behaviors you tolerate and how they shape your culture.Address Misalignment: Hard conversations are essential for maintaining integrity.Model Leadership: Set the tone by consistently enforcing and embodying desired behaviors.Proactive Over Reactive: Build a leadership style that anticipates and prevents issues, rather than reacting to them.Key Quotes"Culture isn't what you say—it's what you tolerate.""Unchecked behavior is the root of dysfunction in teams and homes.""Leadership is visible, intentional, and consistent.""Proactive leadership creates alignment and clarity."Resources MentionedThe Path to Proactive Leadership Program: Learn how to align your actions with your values and lead with clarity. Welcome to The Rocky Garza Show! Today, I'm joined by Vince Kelly, Vice President of Operations at Turns and a long-time friend. Vince has a unique career path that's positioned him next to influential leaders and founders, giving him unparalleled insights into leadership, culture, and organizational dynamics. In this episode, we explore what defines culture, the importance of curiosity, and how to bridge vision and execution for meaningful results.Vince Kelly's Career JourneyVince's journey has always been centered around leadership and execution. Starting with internships and growing into a VP role, he has consistently found himself bridging the gap between visionary leaders and operational teams. His ability to ask impactful questions and create resonance has shaped his success and the success of those around him.Culture, Execution, and ResultsVince challenges the notion of culture as an isolated concept, emphasizing instead that “culture is what you tolerate.” Culture, execution, and results are interconnected. Accountability, transparency, and preparedness are values that permeate both work and interpersonal dynamics, creating a culture where everyone thrives. True culture is defined not by perks or policies but by everyday actions and standards.Leadership Insights and ChallengesLeadership, according to Vince, is about influence, not hierarchy. By being curious and asking questions that explore possibilities rather than point blame, leaders can align their teams around a shared vision. This approach not only builds trust but also creates a psychologically safe environment where teams feel empowered to contribute.Bridging Vision and ExecutionOne of Vince's standout skills is acting as a bridge between visionary leaders and operational teams. He believes that curiosity is the key to aligning big-picture ideas with actionable steps. Whether in a small business or a large organization, clarity and communication are essential to connect people to their purpose.Key TakeawaysCulture is What You Tolerate: True culture isn't about perks—it's about the behaviours you allow and the standards you uphold.Curiosity Bridges Gaps: Asking thoughtful questions can align vision with execution.Accountability and Transparency: These values are crucial for creating a thriving culture.Leadership is Influence: Regardless of your title, your actions define the culture around you.Key Quotes"Culture is what you tolerate.""Curiosity drives alignment and possibility.""You're always creating culture, intentionally or not."Resources MentionedFollow Vince on LinkedIn for insights on leadership and culture: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vince-kelly-151600a2/ Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza Join my upcoming free LIVE workshop: https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessKey Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome01:09 Vince Kelly's Career Journey03:18 Leadership Insights and Challenges05:20 Bridging Vision and Execution08:17 Navigating Organizational Dynamics17:40 Culture, Execution, and Results25:35 Final Thoughts and FarewellTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2025. As we step into this new year, the popular phrase "New Year, New You" is everywhere. But today, I want to challenge that idea. You don't need to reinvent yourself or become someone completely new. Instead, let's focus on rediscovering and refining who you already are. You're not broken, and you don't need fixing—what you need is clarity.Challenging the 'New Year, New You' MentalityThe idea of a "new you" often assumes that who you are now isn't enough. This mindset can lead to burnout as you chase external expectations. Growth is important, but it should come from a place of rediscovery, not reinvention. This year, let's refine and build on what's already great about you.The EPS Matrix: A Tool for Self-ReflectionAt the start of every quarter, I use the EPS Matrix, a reflection tool designed to assess how you see yourself in relation to your life, others, and the actions you take. It's not about becoming someone new—it's about refining and continuing the journey toward alignment and confidence.Reflecting on Your SuccessesTake a moment to think about three things you crushed last year. Why were these successes meaningful? What attributes about yourself made them possible? By understanding and embracing these wins, you can build on them moving forward. Growth starts with recognizing what already works and aligning your actions with who you are.The Importance of ClarityClarity is the key to being understood. Often, when we feel misunderstood, it's not because others lack the ability to understand us—it's because we fail to communicate effectively. When we gain clarity, we can describe who we are in a way that others can grasp. This leads to belonging, confidence, and greater results.Key TakeawaysYou're Not Broken: Growth comes from refining who you are, not replacing yourself.Reflection Over Reinvention: Assess your wins and learn from them instead of trying to overhaul your life.Clarity is Everything: Understand and articulate who you are to feel more aligned and confident.Celebrate Progress: Focus on the small steps that lead to greater alignment, intentionality, and fulfilment.Key Quotes"You don't need a new you. What you need is clarity.""The most powerful version of you already exists.""It's not about reinventing; it's about rediscovering and refining.""Clarity allows us to communicate who we are in a way that's understandable."Resources MentionedFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza Join my upcoming free LIVE workshop: https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessKey Timestamps00:00 Welcome to 2025: Embrace the New Year00:26 Challenging the 'New Year, New You' Mentality02:30 The EPS Matrix: A Tool for Self-Reflection05:01 Reflecting on Your Successes06:54 The Importance of Clarity07:14 A New Year with the Same YouTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
The holiday season often brings a sense of urgency to focus on gratitude, but it's not always easy, is it? Life can feel overwhelming, messy, and far from perfect. Today, I want to explore a different perspective on gratitude. What if it's not about ignoring the challenges but embracing the tension? Gratitude isn't one-dimensional—it's about holding two truths at once: life is hard and beautiful. Let's dive in together. The Concept of 'And'Gratitude is often misunderstood as choosing to only focus on the positive. But real gratitude doesn't require us to deny the difficulties. Instead, it lives in the tension of the “and.” Life isn't just one thing or the other—it's both. You can experience joy and grief, progress and setbacks, beauty and difficulty, all at the same time. Living in the “and” gives us a deeper appreciation for the complexity of life.Real-Life Applications of GratitudeIn my own life, I see this tension every day. Parenting is exhausting and one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. Marriage is deeply fulfilling and a lot of work. Work can be overwhelming, but it also brings moments of meaning and connection. Gratitude invites us to see these layers, not as contradictions but as a fuller picture of life.Navigating Holiday ChallengesThe holidays can magnify this tension. For some, it's a season of firsts—a new family member, a fresh start. For others, it's a season of grief, change, or solitude. Gratitude doesn't mean glossing over these realities. Instead, it means acknowledging the complexity. It's okay to feel joy and sadness simultaneously. It's okay to set boundaries with family while also cherishing moments with them. Gratitude gives us the courage to embrace it all.Key TakeawaysGratitude Lives in the Tension: Life is both hard and beautiful, and gratitude exists in that complexity.Acknowledge the Fullness of Life: Recognize the messy and the amazing—it's all part of the journey.Find Gratitude in the Present: Gratitude doesn't require perfection; it requires presence.Daily Reflection Matters: Take a moment to ask yourself what was challenging and what was wonderful—both deserve acknowledgement.Key Quotes“Gratitude doesn't cancel out pain; it helps us see the bigger picture.”“Life is both hard and beautiful—sometimes in the same moment.”“Gratitude thrives when we hold the tension of the ‘and.'”“This is messy and beautiful, and I'm grateful for all of it.”Resources MentionedFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza Join my upcoming free LIVE workshop: https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessAs we move through this holiday season, I encourage you to let go of the need for perfection and embrace the “and.” Life is messy and beautiful. It's overwhelming and rewarding. Gratitude doesn't erase the challenges—it helps us see the fullness of life. This season, take time to reflect on the hard and the beautiful moments and let gratitude grow in the tension of it all. Remember, it's not about making everything perfect—it's about being present. Merry Christmas, and I hope you find the gratitude in all of it. Let's keep going.Key Timestamps00:00 Introduction to Holiday Gratitude00:52 The Concept of 'And' in Gratitude02:19 Gratitude in Life's Tensions03:02 Real-Life Applications of Gratitude05:34 Navigating Holiday Challenges07:26 Final Thoughts on GratitudeTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this episode of The Rocky Garza Show, I sit down with John Wetmore to unpack his philosophy of Do More Now, Get Better Later. Together, we explore how focusing on action, rather than perfection, can unlock transformative growth in both your personal and professional life. Whether you're stuck in analysis paralysis or just waiting for the “perfect” time to start, this conversation will challenge you to stop overthinking and start moving.John Wetmore is one of the most driven individuals I've had the pleasure of meeting. He's built an incredible career in the insurance industry by embracing a mindset that prioritizes consistent effort over perfect execution. John is a $200 million insurance agency owner, professional business coach and speaker, best-selling author and host of insurance insiders podcast. From overcoming financial struggles and negativity to becoming a leader who inspires others, John's journey is proof that change starts with taking action—even when it feels messy. When I first met John, I was immediately drawn to his authenticity and the way he spoke about his journey. He's someone who doesn't shy away from sharing the raw truth about where he's been and what it took to get where he is today. John grew up broke, had his first child at 16, and faced countless challenges along the way. But what stands out most is his relentless drive to create a better life for himself and his family.Overcoming Negativity and Embracing MentorshipJohn shared how he used to wake up wired for negativity—it was just his default setting. But through honest feedback from mentors and support from his wife, he began to see that he was the problem. More importantly, he realized that because he was the problem, he could also be the solution. That mindset shift, paired with guidance from people who cared about him, helped him start transforming his life. The Alimony Letter: A Turning PointOne of the most powerful moments John shared was receiving a letter about overdue alimony payments. That letter could have crushed him, but instead, it became a turning point. It made him realize he was letting small frustrations control his life. In that moment, he made the decision to let go of perfectionism and focus on activity. That single decision changed everything. The Do More PhilosophyJohn's philosophy of Do More Now, Get Better Later resonated deeply with me. It's such a simple idea: start where you are, do the work, and worry about refining the process later. For John, this mindset led to a breakthrough year in which he tripled his effort, stopped overthinking, and finally saw the results he wanted.Lessons from Baseball: Swing the BatJohn shared a story about his son's baseball practice that perfectly illustrates his philosophy. The coach told the kids to swing the bat as hard as they could, without worrying about whether they hit the ball. The goal was to build strength, not perfection. That's exactly what John preaches: focus on the effort, not the outcome. If you're not swinging, you're not even in the game.Key TakeawaysStop Waiting for Perfect: You don't need all the answers to start. Take the first step, and the clarity will come.Embrace Mistakes: Failure is part of the process. Every mistake teaches you something.Own Your Mindset: Recognize when your thinking is holding you back, and commit to changing it.Take Action Now: Activity leads to momentum. The more you do, the more progress you'll make.Key Quotes"You can't perfect the activity unless you're willing to begin it.""I decided I was done worrying about getting everything perfect—I just went to work.""Stop worrying about the results; swing the bat. You'll never hit the ball if you don't take the swing.""Progress doesn't happen in your comfort zone—it starts when you take action, no matter how small."John's story reminds us that success isn't about being perfect—it's about being willing to take the first step, even when it feels messy or uncertain. Whether you're trying to grow your business, improve your relationships, or simply get unstuck, the key is to do more now. Don't wait. Don't overthink. Just swing the bat and trust that you'll get better along the way.Key Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Meeting at 8 Percent01:33 My First Impressions of John and His Background02:34 John's Journey to Overcome Negativity04:52 How Mentorship Helped John Grow13:00 John's Career in Insurance and Early Challenges16:54 The Alimony Letter That Changed Everything18:15 Embracing Action Over Perfection20:09 The Power of Doing More Now21:49 Why Perfectionism Keeps You Stuck24:07 Taking the First Step: Lessons from Baseball27:18 Final Reflections and Key LessonsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations

In this episode, I dive into the art of rebuilding from burnout, focusing on how leaders can craft sustainable models for their personal lives and businesses. Through a compelling conversation with Zillow's Chief People Officer and insights drawn from years of working with leaders and organizations, I offer a roadmap for achieving scalability without sacrificing sustainability.Key TakeawaysSustainability Is Not StagnationBuilding sustainable practices isn't about settling; it's about creating the capacity to grow without burnout. The Scalability EquationRepeatability is a prerequisite for scalability. If your methods aren't sustainable or repeatable, they won't scale effectively. The Mirror vs. the WindowStop looking outward at others for benchmarks. Instead, reflect inward to align your leadership and life with what truly matters to you.Personal SustainabilityYour leadership, work habits, and personal life must be sustainable. From your work hours to self-care routines, the goal is long-term consistency.Key Quotes“If your life is not sustainable and your business is not sustainable, your leadership style is not going to be sustainable either.”“Stop spending so much time looking out the window at what others are doing and spend more time in the mirror reflecting on what's true for you.”“Nothing you do is scalable until it's repeatable, and that starts with sustainability.”“If you don't pause to assess where you are, you'll end up chasing goals that were never meant for you.”Insights from the EpisodeZillow's Leadership ExampleZillow, a multi-billion-dollar company, demonstrates the power of modeling sustainable practices from the top. Its leadership prioritizes work-life balance, showing that scalability doesn't have to come at the cost of burnout.Reflecting on LeadershipUsing tools like the influence appraisal and EPS matrix, I discuss how leaders can assess their leadership costs and evaluate whether their methods are sustainable for long-term success.Holding the Tension Between Growth and SustainabilityDrawing from Zillow's strategy, I emphasize the importance of maintaining a balance between the drive for growth and the need for stability.Final ThoughtsRebuilding from burnout requires courage and intentionality. It's about stepping back, reflecting on what's sustainable, and realigning your practices to serve your long-term goals. In this episode, I'm joined by guest Deanna Privette, a life insurance agent and financial coach who shares the unexpected insights she gained from pursuing a $100,000 target premium in a single month. Deanna and I dive deep into the lessons she learned along the way, including the importance of balancing ambition with personal values and why she ultimately realized that hitting a high revenue goal wasn't aligned with her true purpose. We explore how to set goals that honor the life you actually want while staying true to the people and values that matter most.Key Quotes"Started out chasing a dream life. Turns out I was already living it.""Are you trying to build something you don't want at the cost of what you already love?"Meet Deanna PrivetteDeanna is a dedicated life insurance agent/financial coach who specializes in tax-free retirement strategies through cash value life insurance. With a holistic approach, Deanna always puts clients first, focusing on their immediate needs and long-term security. As a lifelong partner in their financial journey, Deanna is committed to providing personalized solutions that ensure financial stability both now and in the future. In addition to helping clients, she has a passion for teaching other agents how to provide the same level of expertise and care, empowering them to build long-term relationships with their clients.Deanna's Challenge: A $100,000 GoalWhen Deanna set out to write $100,000 in target premium for August, it was no small feat—her best month previously had been around $50,000. She took on this ambitious challenge to create momentum, build new systems, and inspire other agents with what was possible. The Journey: Overcoming Obstacles and RealizationsIn the beginning, everything seemed to be going well, but as the month progressed, Deanna started to feel the strain. She quickly realized that the pursuit of this goal was taking her away from the things she truly valued—time with family, thorough client connections, and quality over quantity. By pushing herself to such a high target, she risked losing some of what made her life meaningful in the first place.Lessons LearnedJournaling and self-reflection helped Deanna see that she was already living a dream life. While financial success is important, she discovered it's not worth sacrificing personal values or relationships. This journey taught her to evaluate goals and achievements through a lens of what truly matters.Balancing Goals and Personal ValuesAs Deanna pursued this ambitious goal, she found that her true joy came from building meaningful connections and spending quality time with loved ones—not just hitting numbers. She came to appreciate that sometimes we chase big goals without fully realizing that we may already have what we're looking for.Advice for Aspiring AchieversFor those who feel they need big financial milestones to gain credibility or attract followers, Deanna recommends going for it—but with intention. Take on a challenging goal to see if it aligns with what you truly want. Whether or not you reach it, the journey will provide clarity and direction for what genuinely fulfills you.The Importance of Family and FriendsAt the end of the day, Deanna highlights that family and close relationships are her true measure of success. The experience reminded her to stay grounded and recognize the value of the life she has, even while striving for growth.Final ThoughtsDeanna's journey is a powerful reminder that success isn't only about revenue—it's about building a life that feels authentic and aligned with your values. In this episode, I explore the power of vulnerability as a critical tool for personal growth and effective leadership. Often misunderstood as mere disclosure, true vulnerability is about creating genuine opportunities for connection and growth. I discuss how leaders can leverage vulnerability to build trust within their teams, scale their businesses, and unlock their fullest potential. Vulnerability isn't about weakness; it's about strength, openness, and the courage to be seen.Key Quotes"Are you viewing vulnerability as simply the exposure of your weakness, or are you seeing it as your greatest opportunity for growth?""Vulnerability is creating the opportunity to see and be seen by others.""True leadership is not just about telling; it's about creating experiences of connection."Defining Vulnerability in LeadershipMany leaders mistake vulnerability for disclosure, equating openness with weakness. I introduce a working definition of vulnerability: creating the opportunity to see and be seen by others. This perspective shifts vulnerability from being about simply “sharing” to building intentional connections that foster trust and growth within a team or organization.Creating Opportunities for VulnerabilityLeaders often face challenges when it comes to fostering vulnerability. Telling someone to be vulnerable rarely works; instead, leaders need to create experiences where team members feel safe to open up. I emphasize that vulnerability requires both proximity and an invitation—making space for others to see and be seen.Scaling Your Business with VulnerabilityMany CEOs and founders face a common challenge: wanting to scale their business while keeping control. But true scalability requires repeatability, and that demands trust and vulnerability. Leaders must acknowledge where they excel and where they need help. By allowing others to step into roles, leaders can create a repeatable system, enabling their business to grow sustainably.Real-Life Example: The Insurance BusinessI share a success story from a client in the insurance industry who transformed her approach to leadership by embracing vulnerability. Through our work together, she was able to see her team members for who they are, allow them to step up, and recognize her own strengths and limitations. As a result, her business saw increased revenue in just nine weeks—a powerful testament to the vulnerability advantage.Self-Reflection and VulnerabilityI encourage you to ask yourself whether you're leading with true vulnerability or simply disclosing information without depth. Are you creating genuine connections, or are you just sharing content? This reflection is crucial for leaders who wish to inspire loyalty and drive meaningful change within their organizations. Conclusion and Final ThoughtsVulnerability isn't about exposing your weaknesses; it's about using your strengths to foster connection and growth. By embracing the vulnerability advantage, you're not only building stronger teams but also unlocking your own potential as a leader. Ask yourself today: Are you ready to see vulnerability as your greatest opportunity for growth?Resources MentionedMy Website: Rocky GarzaJoin my Upcoming Virtual Event: rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessKey Time Stamps00:00 Introduction to Vulnerability00:36 Welcome to the Rocky Garza Show01:24 The Vulnerability Advantage02:52 Defining Vulnerability04:05 Creating Opportunities for Vulnerability05:07 Vulnerability in Leadership07:12 Scaling Your Business with Vulnerability08:55 Real-Life Example: The Insurance Business10:30 Self-Reflection and Vulnerability15:00 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this episode, I dive into some of the most meaningful questions from our Tell Me About That card deck—a set of 50 questions designed to spark curiosity and foster deeper connections. Today, I answer a few of these questions myself, reflecting on the people who raised me, my natural instincts in challenging situations, and the personal gifts I value most. This episode offers a unique opportunity to get to know me on a more personal level, while also inspiring you to consider your own answers to these powerful questions.Key Quotes"I owe an immense amount of gratitude to the collective of people who raised me.""One of my greatest gifts is the ability to create a space where others feel comfortable being vulnerable, even in high-stakes environments.""The path to connection is not in perfection but in the willingness to share and listen."The People Who Raised MeIn the first question, I reflect on the many people who contributed to raising me—my mom, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and family friends. Their willingness to invite me into their lives taught me values that have shaped who I am today. I share memories and gratitude for their love and resilience, each one playing a unique role in my life.Introducing 'Tell Me About That'I introduce the Tell Me About That deck, a card game designed to encourage meaningful conversations. With 50 thoughtfully crafted questions, this tool is perfect for family gatherings, team-building activities, or simply connecting more deeply with those around you. I use it to answer questions about myself and offer a glimpse into my story.Fight, Flight, or Freeze? One question I answer is about my default reaction in high-pressure situations. My natural instinct, I've discovered, is to "fight." Whether it's jumping into action in an emergency or standing up for others, this response has been a consistent part of who I am. I reflect on how this instinct impacts my personal and professional life. What I Think About MostAnother question prompts me to consider what occupies my thoughts most of the time. For me, it's about being fully present. I work hard to stay focused on the moment at hand, something I see as essential for building authentic connections and living intentionally.Exploring Personal Gifts and VulnerabilityLastly, I explore one of my core gifts: creating an environment where people feel safe to be vulnerable. I've seen this gift in action during high-stakes meetings, workshops, and even podcast interviews. It's a skill I cherish, as it allows others to put their guard down, share openly, and connect on a deeper level.Future Plans and 'Tell Me About That'As we move forward, I'll continue using Tell Me About That questions to learn more about my guests and bring more personal insights into the show. In this episode, I address a common struggle among leaders: the tendency to delay important decisions that could improve their lives. Whether it's waiting until the next month or the new year, many leaders and CEOs fall into the trap of hesitation when it comes to creating meaningful change. I challenge you to stop waiting and take action now, as the change you're looking for begins the moment you decide to ask for help.Key Quotes"The catalytic moment you are longing for in your life comes right on the other side of clarity.""Why do we consistently wait to make a decision when we know we need change?""You didn't get to where you are today by yourself, so why do you believe you need to tackle the next challenge alone?"The Cost of WaitingMany leaders struggle with taking decisive action when they know change is needed. Instead of seizing the moment, they push it off to a future date, hoping circumstances will magically change. In this episode, I explore the mindset behind waiting and the ways it can prevent you from reaching your full potential. I encourage you to stop waiting for the “right” time and start asking: What are you waiting for?The Struggle to Ask for HelpOne of the biggest barriers to taking action is the reluctance to ask for help. Many leaders believe that seeking support is a sign of weakness, yet they forget that they didn't achieve their current success alone. I challenge the notion that you have to go it alone and explain how asking for help can be the key to unlocking the next level of your personal and professional growth.Condensing Time by Asking for HelpI share how working with clients who are willing to ask for help can dramatically condense time and produce results faster. When you have someone to guide you, growth becomes more intentional, and you're able to solve problems before they escalate. By dedicating just an hour of time to personal growth each week, you can see immense change, as demonstrated by a client who transformed her life and business after asking for help.Client Success Story: Overcoming StagnationI recount a powerful success story of a client in the creative space whose business had plateaued after a decade. Through coaching, she was able to break through the stagnation, increase her revenue by 111%, build a stronger team, and create new opportunities. Her life began to change the moment she admitted she needed help. This story illustrates the power of action and clarity in driving transformation.Identifying Areas for ChangeWhat area of your life are you waiting to change? Whether it's personal, professional, financial, emotional, or relational, identifying where you want to grow is the first step. The EPS Matrix I use with clients helps provide a snapshot of where you are today and where you want to be, giving you clarity and direction for the journey ahead.Final Thoughts and EncouragementThe moment of clarity you are seeking might be as simple as acknowledging that it's time to ask for help. The waiting game ends when you take the first step toward change. Today, I challenge you to ask yourself: What are you waiting for? And is today the day you finally take action?Resources MentionedMy website: Rocky GarzaUpcoming free live virtual event: rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessConnect with me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza Key Time Stamps00:00 Introduction: The Waiting Game01:05 Welcome to the Rocky Garza Show02:18 The Cost of Waiting03:42 The Struggle to Ask for Help04:37 The Reality of Self-Sufficiency06:30 Condensing Time by Asking for Help06:45 Finding Time for Personal Growth07:17 Client Success Story: Overcoming Stagnation07:50 The Power of Asking for Help08:48 Transformative Results and New Beginnings10:23 Identifying Areas for Change10:44 Utilizing the EPS Matrix11:37 Final Thoughts and EncouragementTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this episode, I confront a common mistake I see among 8 and 9-figure CEOs: using authenticity as an excuse to avoid personal growth and responsibility. I discuss how leaders often claim "this is just who I am" to defend behavior that could be harmful to their organizations and teams. Instead of seeing authenticity as a shield, I challenge leaders to view it as a responsibility—to take ownership of who they are and how they lead. Authenticity should never be used as an excuse for irresponsibility.Key Quotes"Authenticity should be a personal responsibility, not a liability to the organization.""Where in your life as a leader are you claiming authenticity, when in fact you should be claiming irresponsibility?""Leading with authenticity means taking full responsibility for who you are, not using it as an excuse for bad behavior."The Common Mistake of Using Authenticity as an ExcuseMany leaders of large organizations fall into the trap of using authenticity to justify their unwillingness to change. Phrases like, "This is just who I am" or "I lead this way because it's always worked" are often used to avoid making adjustments that could improve their leadership. I've seen this repeatedly in both founder-led businesses and larger corporations. When authenticity becomes a barrier to personal development, it turns into a liability, stalling the growth of both the leader and the organization.Redefining Authenticity in LeadershipI argue that authenticity in leadership should be redefined. Authenticity is not about sticking rigidly to who you are, but rather about taking full responsibility for yourself as a leader. True authentic leaders constantly evaluate their behaviors and make necessary changes to better serve their teams and organizations. Leaders who embody this are not afraid to adjust their approach or admit when they need help.Irresponsible Leadership vs. Authentic LeadershipToo often, leaders use their authenticity as a defense mechanism, which ultimately leads to irresponsibility. I share examples from organizations where leaders refuse to adjust their behavior or train others because they claim their way is the only way. These leaders may seem authentic, but their refusal to change creates a toxic environment and limits the growth of those around them. Are You Leading from Authenticity or Irresponsibility?I challenge you to reflect on your own leadership. Are there areas where you claim to be acting out of authenticity, but in reality, you're avoiding responsibility? Authentic leadership means taking accountability for your actions and how they impact others. It's about recognizing where change is necessary and leading by example. The 365 Formula and Personal ResponsibilityAuthenticity ties into the 365 Formula I discussed in a previous episode. Leaders who commit to proactive daily steps—small, consistent actions—can better align themselves with the personal responsibility that comes with being an authentic leader. I encourage you to adopt a similar approach to your leadership: look for ways to take responsibility, rather than making excuses for your behavior.Resources MentionedWebsite: Rocky GarzaUpcoming Virtual Event: rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessKey Time Stamps00:00 The Number 1 Mistake of CEOs00:37 Welcome to the Rocky Garza Show01:39 The Common Pitfall of Leaders04:19 Authenticity vs. Irresponsibility06:05 A Real-World Example07:57 Challenge to Leaders10:40 Final Thoughts and Call to ActionTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this episode, I delve into the challenges many high achievers face: accomplishing massive goals yet struggling with the smaller daily activities needed to build the life they truly desire. The 3-6-5 Formula is designed to create proactive, small daily steps that lead to lasting, profound change. Through my personal experience as a coach and consultant, I explain how embracing a daily framework helps prevent reactive living and instead fosters a life of intentionality. By incorporating the 3-6-5 Formula, you can set a clear path for your everyday life and avoid getting lost in the pursuit of the next big goal.Key Quotes"The 3-6-5 Formula is about three things you commit to doing six days a week within the first five minutes of waking up.""We're not striving for perfection; we're aiming for proactivity in our daily lives.""The first five minutes of your day dictate how you will respond to everything else that follows."The Struggle with Reactive LivingHigh achievers often find it easier to achieve big, strategic goals while getting caught up in the minutiae of daily life. Without a clear plan for how we want our daily life to look, we end up spending our energy on larger projects, leaving little room for personal growth or satisfaction. I share a conversation with a successful business owner who recognized his struggle to set up his day-to-day life to maximize his efforts on what matters most, including family and self-care.Introducing the 3-6-5 FormulaThe 3-6-5 Formula was created to help you establish proactive daily steps. It involves three simple commitments you make within the first five minutes of waking up, six days a week. It's designed to ensure that you start your day with intentionality, focusing on what truly matters to you rather than getting swept away by external demands. The Snooze EffectOne of the biggest hurdles to living proactively is what I call the "snooze effect." Hitting the snooze button in the morning reflects how we approach other areas of life, often leading to hesitation and a lack of focus. By eliminating the snooze effect, you begin each day with the confidence to do what you say you will, setting a tone of integrity and intentionality. Why Six Days a Week?Life is unpredictable, and we're all human. The 3-6-5 Formula accounts for this by promoting six days of proactive living, allowing for grace and flexibility on the seventh day. This approach encourages consistency over perfection, understanding that sometimes taking a day to rest is crucial for maintaining long-term success. The Power of the First Five MinutesThe first five minutes of your day are pivotal. What you commit to during this time sets the tone for how you respond to everything else. Instead of allowing external circumstances to dictate your actions, the 3-6-5 Formula puts you in control, empowering you to navigate the day with intention and purpose.Living Beyond Problem-SolvingMany of us pride ourselves on being problem solvers, but living reactively can prevent us from building the life we want. The 3-6-5 Formula shifts the focus from reacting to problems to proactively creating the life you desire. It's about choosing three simple, proactive steps that align with your goals and values, repeated consistently.Resources MentionedWebsite: Rocky GarzaFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza Key Time Stamps00:00 Introduction to The 3-6-5 Formula02:15 The Challenge of Daily Proactivity05:50 Breaking Down the 3-6-5 Formula10:30 The Snooze Effect: A Metaphor for Life15:20 The Power of Six Days a Week18:45 Why the First Five Minutes Matter22:10 Moving from Reactive to Proactive Living28:00 Conclusion and Next StepsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this episode, I break down the myth of work-life balance and explain why it's a misconception that often sets work and life up as opposing forces. I dive into the idea of embracing life's natural tensions and explore how we can find harmony among our various responsibilities. Through personal stories and insights from over a decade of coaching and consulting experience, I introduce a new framework for managing responsibilities by categorizing them into three key areas: accountable, responsible, and chosen. I also explore the benefits of holding onto life's tensions, such as anxiety, rather than trying to eliminate them, aiming for a more integrated and peaceful existence.Key Quotes"Work-life balance is a lie. The only people who talk about needing work-life balance are those who believe they are working too much.""We're not trying to balance two things; it's the complexity of life that is pulling us in all directions.""Anxiety isn't something to get rid of; it's something to be with, to hold the tension of.""We shouldn't see rest and work as opposites. They can coexist if we allow them to."Debunking the Myth of Work-Life BalanceWork-life balance is something many people strive for, yet I believe it's fundamentally flawed. It's often framed as a one-way street, only coming up when we feel overwhelmed by work, never when life itself seems to take over. This mindset puts work and life in constant opposition, leaving us searching for a harmony that seems just out of reach. I argue that, instead of balancing these two aspects, we need to acknowledge the complexity of life as it pulls us in different directions.Life's Tensions: Beyond Work and LifeHere's what I've learned: life is not just about work and life as two separate forces. There are multiple elements in play—family, relationships, personal growth, career goals, and much more. Each aspect pulls us in different directions, creating a natural tension. I suggest that the goal isn't to find a perfect balance but to recognize and live with this tension, integrating all areas of life into a cohesive whole.Three Buckets of Life's ResponsibilitiesI introduce my three-bucket framework for categorizing responsibilities into three key areas:Accountable: These are commitments I'm answerable for, like my marriage or my business. I may not control every aspect, but I'm accountable for the overall outcome.Responsible: These are things I'm directly responsible for, like my health, daily tasks, and caring for my children.Chosen: These are responsibilities I've willingly taken on, such as managing my grandparents' finances. I'm neither inherently responsible nor accountable for these, but I've chosen to take them on.This framework provides a clearer picture of where our energy and focus should go, helping us navigate life's natural tensions more effectively.Embracing Anxiety and TensionNow, let's talk about anxiety. It's easy to want to push it away or see it as something to eliminate. But what if anxiety serves a purpose? It makes you detail-oriented, thoughtful, and caring. Instead of fighting against it, what if you embraced it and held that tension alongside other aspects of your life? The idea is not to eliminate anxiety but to allow it to coexist with peace, recognizing it as part of life's tensions.Living in the Tension of LifeI challenge you to stop seeing rest and work, productivity and relaxation as opposites. They aren't. They can coexist if we allow them to. It's about holding the space where both can exist. When you're at home after a long day, wanting to work out but also wanting to rest, ask yourself: why can't both happen? Maybe you can do a quick 15-minute workout and then relax. It's about living in the tension rather than trying to strike an impossible balance.Resources MentionedWebsite: Rocky GarzaUpcoming Virtual Event: https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessKey Time Stamps00:00 Debunking the Myth of Work-Life Balance00:28 Introduction to the Rocky Garza Show01:40 The One-Way Street of Work-Life Balance04:38 Life's Tensions: Beyond Work and Life06:12 Three Buckets of Life Responsibilities10:37 Embracing Anxiety and Tension12:41 Combining Rest and Activity14:10 Living in Life's Tensions15:20 Conclusion and Next StepsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
In this episode of The Rocky Garza Show, I continue to explore the intersection of a meaningful life and a successful career. With my vast experience as a coach and keynote speaker for Fortune 500 companies, I share my insights on how to gain clarity, build confidence, and live life on your own terms. Whether you're striving for professional success or seeking a more fulfilling personal life, this podcast episode is for you.Key Quotes:“Life is meant to be lived in the valley, not just from mountaintop to mountaintop.”“The mountaintop is isolating, but the valley is where life and growth happen.”“Redefining the landscape of success means finding fulfillment at every stage, not just at the peak.”Success is More Than MountaintopsI challenge the traditional definition of success, which focuses on achieving one lofty goal after another. I encourage you to reconsider your perspective, highlighting that success can be found in everyday moments and incremental progress. From the midway points on the mountain to the days spent in the valley, each step is a vital part of the journey. The Gap Mentality: Why Big Goals Can Hold You BackI discuss the “gap mentality,” where the vast distance between where we are and where we want to be overwhelms us. This mentality often leads to burnout and dissatisfaction. I introduce the idea of focusing on daily actions and smaller, more manageable goals that will eventually compound into success over time.Transforming Daily Habits: Bridging the GapI dive into practical steps to close the gap between where you are now and where you aspire to be. By breaking down massive goals into smaller daily activities—like saving money a little at a time—success becomes achievable. The key is in understanding and controlling the daily habits that fuel long-term progress.Defining True SuccessTrue success is not just about achieving external accolades or financial goals. It's about knowing what you truly want in life and committing to the daily actions that align with those desires. Write down 20 things you want and then narrow that list to the top five priorities that will guide your life.Overcoming the Challenges of Motivation and PrioritizationI explain the importance of prioritizing what truly matters and committing to the daily habits that reflect those priorities. I encourage you to “schedule your priorities,” putting important life goals like family time or personal growth on the calendar before other obligations. The EPS Matrix: Measuring Holistic SuccessI introduce the EPS (Eight Points of Success) Matrix, a tool to help assess success across different areas of life. This holistic approach allows you to track your progress and understand how various aspects of your life—personal and professional—intersect and influence each other.Resources MentionedWebsite: Rocky GarzaFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza Key Time Stamps00:00 – Introduction: Redefining Success00:30 – Welcome to the Rocky Garza Show01:16 – Moving Beyond the Mountaintop04:44 – Exploring the Valley of Success07:30 – Bridging the Gap Mentality13:21 – Redefining Daily Habits16:58 – Introducing the EPS Matrix18:14 – Conclusion: Embracing the JourneyTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations
The Confidence Method is a systematic way to unpack and understand the stories we have been told and those we tell ourselves. These narratives often fuel our insecurities and lack of self-confidence.Key Quotes"If you could go back and find the beginnings of the threads of the stories told to you about you... those stories were a greater representation of the storyteller than they were the main character of the story.""Imposter syndrome... is just us fueling ourselves with the wrong information.""Where these two stories collide, there is inevitably an impact.""Self-confidence is simply the belief that something is good.
