Hugo speaks with Alex Strick van Linschoten, Machine Learning Engineer at ZenML and creator of a comprehensive LLMOps database documenting over 400 deployments. Alex's extensive research into real-world LLM implementations gives him unique insight into what actually works—and what doesn't—when deploying AI agents in production. In this episode, we dive into: - The current state of AI agents in production, from successes to common failure modes - Practical lessons learned from analyzing hundreds of real-world LLM deployments - How companies like Anthropic, Klarna, and Dropbox are using patterns like ReAct, RAG, and microservices to build reliable systems - The evolution of LLM capabilities, from expanding context windows to multimodal applications - Why most companies still prefer structured workflows over fully autonomous agents We also explore real-world case studies of production hurdles, including cascading failures, API misfires, and hallucination challenges. Alex shares concrete strategies for integrating LLMs into your pipelines while maintaining reliability and control. Whether you're scaling agents or building LLM-powered systems, this episode offers practical insights for navigating the complex landscape of LLMOps in 2025. Today I talked to Peter Gordon and Juan José Morales about their book Painter and Patron: The Maritime Silk Road in the Códice Casanatense (Abbreviated Press, 2020). The Códice Casanatense, or Codex Casanatense 1889 as it is formally known, is a 16th-century Indo-Portuguese collection of some 76 captioned watercolours now held in the Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome. Deposited there at the beginning of the 18th century, it resided in almost complete obscurity for two and half centuries and was not brought to scholarly attention until the 1950s. It has never been discussed in detail for the general reader. Painted by an Indian artist, and annotated in Portuguese, the Codex is a remarkable work of collaboration that portrays the peoples, costumes and customs of a region extending from Africa to China. This region, crossed by Portuguese explorers and traders, maps on what is now commonly called the Maritime Silk Road. Lively and evocative, the Códice Casanatense is a unique historical record that provides a human window into an Asia that Europeans were only just entering and a first testimony of an encounter that would transform the world. Although the painter has deep connections with Indian artistic traditions, he also drew upon the illustrations in Balthasar Sprenger's iconic 1509 Die Merfart, while the Codex itself was a source for the illustrations in Jan Huygen van Linschoten's classic end-of-the-century Itinerario. Both influenced and influencing, the Codex is unveiled as an archetypal example of East-West cultural and intellectual fusion. Peter Gordon is editor of the Asian Review of Books and publisher of Chameleon Press. He was also a founder of the Man Asian Hong Kong International Literary Festival. Juan José Morales is an entrepreneur and historian who has published a variety of works ranging from poetry anthologies to works on arts and culture. Jenny Peruski is a Ph.D. candidate at Harvard University, Department of History of Art and Architecture. Her research focuses on ornamentation and bodily adornment in coastal eastern Africa. Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix Kuehn‘s An Enemy We Created: The Myth of the Taliban/Al Qaeda Merger in Afghanistan, 1970-2010 (Oxford University Press, reprint edition 2014) offers what is in many ways is an untold, insider's account of the birth of the Taliban and Al Qaeda during the anti-Soviet jihad, and their subsequent cooperation (or indeed lack thereof) in the pre- and post-9/11 world. By living first in Kabul, and then Kandahar, Afghanistan, the authors gained more privileged access to individuals involved with Afghan history in the 1980s-2000s than perhaps anyone outside of Western intelligence agencies. By speaking with Taliban officials — indeed Van Linschoten and Kuehn's previous project was editing the memoirs of Taliban senior official Abdul Salam Zaeef – and former “Afghan Arabs”, the authors enriched their research immensely. The result shows in the final product: a nuanced, deeply layered, and meticulously investigative look at a fascinating subject. An Enemy We Createdshould be seen as paradigmatic for future research on militant organizations, and offers up an immense challenge to those experts who would seek to write on such topics from the comfort of Western armchairs.”

Doctors in London say a teenage Pakistani girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban is “doing very well.” In photos released today by the British hospital where she’s being treated, Malala Yousufzai appears with her eyes open and alert. The shooting was an effort by the Taliban to silence the girl, who has spoken out for the right of girls to be educated. Joshua Landis, the Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma, said the education of women in the Middle East represents a larger struggle between Westernization, and what Taliban commander Maulana Fazlullah calls authentic Islamic patriarchal values. “Pakistanis are trying to say, ‘This is a human value, this has nothing to do with America,’” Landis said. “But of course, the Taliban is trying to say, ‘This is America, and this value of liberating women is a Western intrusion into our traditional society.’” In January, Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa graduated its first class of underprivileged girls since opening in 2007, and global security and comparative politics expert Rebecca Cruise said beyond liberation and human rights, education represents a development issue. “So if we educate girls, that gives them the ability to earn more money,” Cruise said. “They then invest that money in their families and their communities.” Author Alex Strick van Linschoten first traveled to Afghanistan as a tourist in 2004, and since then, he’s co-founded an online research and media-monitoring group to give a more prominent voice to local Afghan media, and worked as a freelance journalist in Kandahar, Syria, Lebanon and Somalia. His most recent book, Poetry of the Taliban, collects more than 200 works by poets who are part of the Islamic fundamentalist movement. “Well, it is their voice, and it happens to be a voice which I think is important that we listen to in many ways,” Strick van Linschoten said. Strick van Linschoten said the attention was drawn to only those poems that were anti-Western, and not the entire publication. He also described his research that focused on the differences between al-Qaeda and the Taliban. “In many ways, we’ve been poorly-served by both our media organizations, and politicians,” Strick van Linschoten said. “Both of whom have been happy to lazily perpetuate this notion that all of these groups are the same, and they’re all Islamists fighting against us in different ways."
