In this episode of DTC Pod, Nicolas Beaupré illuminates the strategies that propelled Mateina's growth in the North American market, where the lure of yerba mate was still largely undiscovered. He emphasizes the crucial role of grassroots efforts like word-of-mouth endorsements and community events in building a loyal customer base. Nicolas shares his journey of self-funding, supplemented later by keen investors, which allowed the brand to foster a robust direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales model. In developing Mateina's signature non-carbonated yerba mate beverage, he underscores the meticulous year-and-a-half-long process of trial and error with suppliers to fine-tune the recipe. Moving into the future, Nicolas envisions continuing to innovate and potentially expand Mateina's retail footprint.Episode brought to you by More StaffingJoin 15k founders and marketers & get our pod highlights delivered directly to your inbox with the DTC Pod Newsletter! On this episode of DTC Pod, we cover:1. It's Substantive Cinema time again and we're excited to be looking at Affliction, a film that Writer/Director Paul Schrader considers to be a Top 4 project of his (along with Taxi Driver, Mishima, and the topic of our inaugural SC episode, First Reformed). Affliction tells the story of Wade Whitehouse (Nick Nolte in a heartbreaking and Oscar nominated performance), a man deeply broken by his relationship with his abusive father (James Coburn in a brutal, Oscar winning performance) trying to find meaning in his small-town life amidst a series of trials both real and imagined. It's a wonderful film but beware that it is a pretty hard watch if you decide to watch it before you listen. Affliction is currently streaming for free on Tubi & Amazon Freevee. And we are also delighted to welcome Senior Letterboxd Editor, Mitchell Beaupre to join us for this conversation! Mitchell is a longtime Schrader fan and apologist and interviewed him just a few months ago during the release of Master Gardener (link below). Over the past few years, I've enjoyed following Mitchell's film journeys on social media, including their discovery of a trio of outstanding Meryl Streep romance movies that I love, including FALLING IN LOVE, DEFENDING YOUR LIFE, and most recently, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, which became one of their new favorites. Messaging them instantly to join me in discussing the topic of Meryl Streep in Love, we chose these three films which showcase a lighter, more accessible, and less "actorly" side of the Oscar-winning legend, yet one that might boast her best performance committed to film. And as we delve deeply into what Streep and her great co-stars and craftsmen are doing in these movies and the ways they touch us, we wind up doing a lot of storytelling along the way, culminating in a long, personal, and philosophical conversation about friendship, love, and some of our own experiences that I know listeners will appreciate. Additionally, a prolific freelance film journalist and stellar interviewer for prestigious outlets such as "The Film Stage," "Paste Magazine," "The Playlist," and "Little White Lies," you can keep up with all of their impressive work on Twitter @ItIsMitchell.The biggest fan of Willem Dafoe, Mitchell's passion for their favorite character actor shines through in this rich, in-depth feature-length conversation. People weren't aware that they could like gin. People weren't aware that there was a history that could define what's in the glass in front of them. By meshing those two together, the awareness drove itself and it has allowed people to talk about the product saying, ‘I don't like gin, but I like this Jigger and Jones stuff.'” – Matthew Murphy, President, Director of Operations and Co-founder of The Devil's Half Acre Distillery.   Links: Fan Jones and her Sky Blue House of Pleasure - Meander Maine San Francisco World Spirits Competition Bartender Spirits Awards competition The Boarding Pass Cocktail   Activate the PR Maven® Flash Briefing on your Alexa Device.  Join the PR Maven® Facebook group.    About the guest:     The Devil's Half Acre Distillery was established in 2016 and is the only military veteran owned and operated distillery in the State of Maine. Our B-Sides today are: All Night Long, The Package, Heartbreakers, and Welcome to Mooseport. We talk Hackman's beginnings, Mitchell's superb piece on Hackman's spectacular 2001, the actor's own reflections on his accomplished career, his mid-career hiatus, and - finally - his frequent combativeness with his directors. Additional topics include Tommy Lee Jones' wild ‘90s, Jennifer Love Hewitt's recollection of Heartbreakers (both the good and the bad), the work of René Descartes, Nicolas Roeg's Hackman-starring epic Eureka, and the iconic Fox television show Party of Five. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. We are also now on Spotify and Stitcher. Enjoy!
