Ep. 314: The Power of a Pause and Honoring Your Capacity (An Update)

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2024 11:58

After some intentional down time this summer, it's time for an update on what my 3-month podcast sabbatical looked like and what's next in the world of BEYOND.   There is so much power in taking a pause – sometimes they're planned out well in advance, and sometimes they're the curveballs that change up the plan.   In this episode, I'm reconnecting to share the unexpected parts of my year, what that's looked like for myself, my family and my business. While a lot of uncertainty remains and I continue to pray for clarity and discernment, I'm sharing with you what I DO know for sure in this season of rest, reflection and reset.   Some of the highlights inside BEYOND Ep. 314: • How building a SIMPLIFIED business makes it (relatively) smooth to hit pause when life happens • Overcoming the lie that a break, pause or sabbatical means a lack of productivity (or that it will prevent growth down the road) • The beauty of letting yourself be where you are, and honoring your capacity in this season • What's ahead for BEYOND, what I have clarity on (and what I don't!) • How seasons of waiting are not to be rushed (as uncomfortable as it is)   If you're in a season where you need support as a mom called to business, private 1:1 coaching with me is like having a business therapist, marketing strategist, messaging mastermind and mom mentor, all-in-one. In John Lennon's famous song Beautiful Boy, he sings the words, “Life is what happens to you While you're busy making other plans.” I feel similarly when I look back and think about the trajectory of my business journey – there have been so many plot twists that happened while I was making other plans.  When your reality looks different than you thought it would, it can be really hard! It can feel extremely uncomfortable. And the thoughts and feelings we have about what life and business look like compared to what we THINK it should look like can make it really tough to TRUST THE PROCESS. And so, I thought I'd share with you some of the major plot twists that have happened through the course of my years as a creative entrepreneur and coach, and why I'm so glad they did.   On this episode, you'll learn: Why I quit a promising new job without a backup plan How my business has looked different in different seasons of motherhood Two (expensive) lessons in integrity from business investments that were not what I expected The unplanned shift that had me thinking, “I didn't see that coming” The current plot twist currently unfolding through this podcast and why I'm so excited to share it with you My I believe it's so important to have goals and dreams, but to also be willing to hold them loosely   When life feels complicated, when business feels complicated, and you don't know where to begin when it comes to UNcomplicating it, it's time to SIMPLIFY. In the middle of the everyday, how does this work? How do your thoughts run your life? And what can you do about it? In this episode we're breaking down two key pieces of truth anchored inside this passage. We were created with the agency, the free will to shape our thinking, and it may be the greatest gift we have. Micro changes, macro results.   That's how I think about habits. They don't have to be huge, overwhelming and time-consuming in order to be life-changing. Often, the little things, done consistently, are the big things. This is because they build on each other – they compound.   Today we're talking about life-changing habits. These are powerful rituals that either I have in place in my own life as a mom and entrepreneur, ones that have been really helpful and effective for my clients, or a combination of both. I named this episode 5 Habits that can fix 80% of your problems because I've found that these 5 have a compound effect – meaning, the benefit they bring to your days and to your life is so much greater than the time and energy they take to implement.   On this episode, you'll learn about these powerful habits:   • Create non-negotiable morning anchors • Get enough rest • Plan out your day ahead of time • Do the thing you want to do LEAST today, FIRST Surround yourself with people who help encourage and grow you   When life feels complicated, when business feels complicated, and you don't know where to begin when it comes to UNcomplicating it, it's time to SIMPLIFY. Over-apologizing can undermine your authority and competence, and it is a reflection of the relationship you have with yourself.    In this episode, we're talking about why, especially as women, we tend to apologize when it's not necessary. PEACE. How much our souls deeply crave it as we find ourselves in this busy, crazy world. As a mom called to build a business, it can feel like your attention is being pulled in twenty-seven different directions at any given moment. It can feel like your life is dictated by the needs, expectations and distractions from the outside world. Many of us wait around for life seasons and circumstances to change – hoping that THEN, we'll finally be able to experience the peace we're longing for. But here's the truth: even if it feels contrary to the reality most of us find ourselves in, your peace is your responsibility. It's a choice. It's something you have the ability to steward: just as you do your time, your money and your health. You can have the most creative and strategic marketing plan EVER – but if fear of failure or rejection, or even fear of success, paralyzes you from showing up to implement even step 1 of that plan – the marketing plan isn't worth a penny. You have to believe in yourself and the value you bring to your clients in order to show up, to be visible and to bring that compelling, valuable message to your dream clients.  You can buy all of the courses and programs, you can collect dozens and dozens of them, but if shiny object syndrome has you hopping from one uncompleted course module to the next, if the belief that you just have to get certified in THIS or invest in this thing over here because THIS IS GOING TO BE THE THING that changes everything for you, you'll spend all of your time with your head down collecting courses and consuming content instead of listening to your people, paying attention to how you can help them and creating valuable solutions to their problems. You can spend all of the dollars on a high-end web designer and a killer copywriter, but you don't have a clear understanding of precisely who your people are and what makes you uniquely qualified to help them, AND feel confident in that? No website design or conversion copy can bridge that gap.  You can toil for hours… days.. Months even, shopping for the perfect font or the ideal color palette for your brand – but hear this – if you find yourself stuck in one of those rabbit holes, it is “work” that is pointless but pretending to be useful. It's easy to get stuck in that place of behind the scenes busy work… I just need to finish this, and redesign this, and rethink my strategy about this… I've been there, believe me, I GET IT, but this is not productive, and this is not helping you get the clients you're called to serve. This is simply a list of distractions created by a brain that is scared and uncomfortable to go out there and SERVE people because there is a lack of BELIEF when it comes to your ability to follow through, to serve people well, or both.   On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn: The ONE thing you can never outsource as a creative or coach How most entrepreneurs spend way too much time on the (many) things they think they're “supposed to” be doing – instead of what will ACTUALLY lead to paying clients. Why it feels like you're “doing all the things” but nothing is working. The most overlooked (and critical) piece of being a business owner that you need to begin prioritizing today. The 3 pieces required to leverage the power of your mindset and belief into more peace, more joy and more profit.    When life feels complicated, when business feels complicated, and you feel stuck when it comes to UNcomplicating it, it's probably time to SIMPLIFY. High-profitability paired with high quality of life is the mission of my business, and it's the focus of my partnership with clients inside SIMPLIFIED.  This coaching and consulting intensive is exclusively for creative entrepreneurs and coaches who want to create 6-figure profit in their businesses – without working all of the time, and without having the stress of mountains of expenses.  Inside SIMPLIFIED, we combine mindset support with strategic simplicity to create a life and business that you don't want to quit. An illness or diagnosis, the end of a relationship, loss of finances or lack of business growth… maybe for you, it's finding yourself in a season of life you never imagined, and feeling completely helpless as to HOW to get beyond it. It's a privilege to get to see behind the scenes of a lot of lives and businesses, it's an honor that I take seriously, and these insights have led to observing a number of patterns. I know that right now, some of you are going through the toughest season in your life: maybe it's your marriage, parenting, health, or business. And others of you might find yourself stuck in this somewhat foggy, spinning on the hamster wheel, groundhog day kind of a place… maybe you can't yet fully articulate the what or the why that has you feeling so stuck, but deep down, you feel it. In 2018, she started offering day rates to clients and found it to be a life-changing shift. She later taught this model to other service providers and scaled her business by creating a course. But this shift didn't come without some pain points. Sarah candidly highlights the challenges of scaling, such as building a team and managing a complex program.    Sarah explains that scaling doesn't always mean moving away from one-on-one work, and that it's possible to grow a business by sticking with services you love. Our conversation explores the benefits and challenges of the day rate model for creatives and coaches. Sarah shares her experience and insights on how day rates can simplify business, allow for more focus on the work you truly love, and increase profitability. She also discusses the scalability of day rates and the importance of building trust with clients. Sarah highlights the need for experimentation and learning from the process, as well as the value of being part of a supportive community. She also mentions her excitement about getting back into design work through upcoming offers for her clients.   Key Takeaways • Restructuring your business and shifting to a different model can be a life-changing decision. • Day rates can provide simplicity and productivity, allowing you to focus on one client at a time. • Scaling a business comes with challenges, such as building a team and managing a complex program. • It's possible to grow a business by sticking with one-on-one work if that's what you love. • Scaling doesn't always mean creating a course or building an agency. The day rate model allows creatives and coaches to focus on the work they love and simplify their business. • Building trust with clients is crucial for selling day rates. • Experimentation and learning from the process are key to refining and optimizing day rates. • Being part of a supportive community can provide motivation and inspiration. • Returning to previous creative work or interests can reignite creative joy and fulfillment. • Sarah offers a Day Rate Quick Start program for those interested in exploring the day rate model.   Important links sarahmasci.com Connect with Sarah over on IG Day Rate Quick Start   High-profitability paired with high quality of life is the mission of my business, and it's the focus of my partnership with clients inside SIMPLIFIED. It's an interesting paradox: many entrepreneurs find that their "best" year in business is also the year they saw the least profit. This episode explores the difference between growth and profit and helps small business owners like you determine where your focus should be. We distinguish between revenue growth and profit, and explore how rapid growth can come at the cost of profitability. We highlight the importance of knowing your owner's intent and aligning your focus with your business "end goal". We explore why the possibility of profitability is so high for online, service-based businesses and the importance of sustainable growth.   On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn: • How building a six-figure business is not the same as profiting (or paying yourself) six figures • The differences between a growth-focused business and a profit-focused business  • How identifying your owner's intent helps determine whether your focus should be on growth, profit, or both • Why high-profit margins are realistic for creative entrepreneurs and coaches • Why slow and steady wins the race: sustainable growth is often more desirable than rapid growth   Takeaways: "My best year in business was also the year I saw the least profit." How do you optimize your work hours?   How do you work less, but get more done?   How do you create an intentional plan for your time, but also make room for flexibility as a mom?   How can you make decisions that allow your work to remain (mostly!) a joy and not a drain?   We're answering these questions and more on this episode of BEYOND.    Designing your ideal work schedule starts with imagining how you want to spend your time outside of work. My schedule and weekly workflow is always open for negotiation, but over the last handful of years I've really found what works well for me and our family, and I wanted to share it in more detail than I have before because I know how that can be really helpful. What works for my business model and schedule may not translate exactly for you, but when you hear WHY I've chosen to set my weeks up this way, it may give you some things to consider or try when planning out your own schedule. So I'm going to take you through my week, day by day, and share how I've designed those days and again, WHY it works well for me.   On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn:   • My philosophy about weekend work • Why I call Mondays my "get it done" days • How I frontload my week for simplicity and ease • Why I've chosen to have just two days each week that I work with clients • How I "bookend" my weeks to protect my energy, give my weekends plenty of margin and leave room for "catch up" time • How I build in both intention AND flexibility into my schedule • How I prevent "client days" from looking like draining, back-to-back-to-back Zoom calls • What it looks like to accomplish full-time productivity on a part-time schedule • Why I LOVE taking Fridays off, and how you can do it, too   Designing an intentional schedule that maximizes your time, energy and capacity and supports your family's values is one piece of creating a SIMPLIFIED business. With flexibility in your workflow, and intention baked into your scheduling decisions, you can get ENOUGH done so that you can close your laptop feeling accomplished and then go live the rest of your life.   If you're ready to create a SIMPLIFIED business – one that is focused on your peace and profit, as a creative or coach, I want to invite you to apply for SIMPLIFIED. I'm still figuring things out as a business-building mom, and that means being open to change. Whether it's changing your mind, trying something new, acknowledging different priorities or just acknowledging that what might have worked in the past isn't ideal for THIS season, that flexibility allows us to progress and grow.   Always questioning what's working well, what isn't, and what I could be doing better, I've outlined some changes I've already made – or am in the process of making – this year.   In this behind-the-scenes episode of BEYOND, I'm sharing 7 things I'm personally doing differently in life and business this year as a mom.    On this episode, you'll learn: • My approach to the new year and goal-setting that might look different than what you've seen before • What kind of coaching I'm investing in for myself this year • How a changing body as a 40+ mom has shifted my approach to my physical health, workouts and nutrition • Where I'm adding in a second "mini-sabbatical" into my schedule this year to travel, refuel and recharge • What you'll see more of on episodes of BEYOND • The new marketing strategy I'm experimenting with as I seek to spend less time on social • The offer I'm considering making available to you (I need your feedback to make it happen!) Part of keeping business SIMPLE involves looking for opportunities to change – considering the reality of the season you're in, and deciding what you want to stop doing, start doing, and keep doing. It's this intentional evaluation that informs what makes sense to do less of, and more of, in your life and business. I hear it all the time: "I know what I need to be doing, so why am I just not doing it?!?" Have you been there? It's that thought, "Okay, I'm an intelligent person – why can't I figure this out? What is my problem? Why don't I follow through?"   This very human struggle is one so many of us can relate to. Whether it's saying you're going to make it to the gym or eat healthier, doing the very work you've committed to doing that's on your to-do list today, paying an invoice or calling someone back when you said you would, how can you ACTUALLY do what you say you're going to do? That's what we're going to talk about in today's episode. Trusting that you're going to follow through – becoming someone who does what she says – that builds personal integrity within us. Without it, we lose confidence in ourselves – in both our decision making and our ability to execute and implement – to actually take action and DO the things. When we develop this strong sense of personal integrity, we not only trust ourselves to follow through – but trust ourselves to commit to the right things to begin with.  On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn:   • 3 key considerations to make when it comes to ACTUALLY doing what you say you're going to do • How our busy, rushed lives lead us to say YES more than NO • How to apply intentional follow-through to your marriage, parenting, friendships, your personal goals, fitness, faith, finances… as well as your professional goals as an entrepreneur • The one thing you want to be sure of BEFORE you say yes and commit to something • How excuses distract us from doing and accomplishing things we say matter to us in life and business • What an "intentional implementation" is and and how to create one when you want to solidify a commitment    This ability to own your decisions and follow through on them is HUGE when it comes to building a business focused on your peace and profit. Becoming someone who consistently does what she says she's going to do increases your confidence, makes you a better decision maker, reduces stress and maximizes your profit because your time is used intentionally and profitably. Do you ever lie in bed at night thinking about a decision you need to make… playing out everything that could possibly go wrong in each scenario, walking through each one, in painstaking detail, terrified of making the wrong choice – only to look over and realize it's now 3 a.m.?    Or how about mornings… do you ever sit down at the beginning of your work day, glance at the to-do list or your schedule and instantly feel so overwhelmed, not only do you not know where to begin, but even the idea of figuring it out feels so daunting that instead of making a decision or making a plan, you do neither and instead mindlessly scroll on instagram for an hour? These are examples of overthinking… thinking about something to the extent that is simply not useful or productive in any way. Overthinking is a trap that steals our time, our focus, our mental and emotional health and productivity, and here's the thing. It PRETENDS to be necessary.    Your brain wants you to believe that overthinking is somehow wise or responsible – it is not. In fact, what's really happening when you're overthinking is that the part of your brain designed to keep you safe and comfortable, is TRYING to keep you comfortable by having you avoid DOING something  – whether that's making a decision or taking other meaningful action of some sort, okay? Again, overthinking pretends to be useful, but it complicates your business because it's keeping you from using your time, energy and attention in the most valuable, most profitable ways. On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn: • Why overthinking pretends to be necessary • What's really happening when you find yourself stuck in a cycle of overthinking • How overthinking complicates our businesses and how this one piece of mindset work can lead to a simpler business • The most effective thing you can do at the start of each morning to avoid analysis paralysis and confusion • What to do when you're feeling like an inadequate imposter • How overthinking relates to not feeling present in our lives   Cleaning up the mind drama and overthinking that's holding you back is one way I help creatives and coaches SIMPLIFY their businesses for more peace and more profit. Many of us want to build an intentional business, but we've never actually defined our owner's intent as a small business owner. I like to think of your owner's intent as a simpler, less-corporate version of a vision statement. It basically answers the question: what is your intention as a business owner? What is your END goal? For many of us building businesses as creatives and coaches and online educators, it's easy to think of ourselves as service providers, experts, consultants, maybe even freelancers in some cases, and we tend to think less often from the perspective of a brand or business owner. Your owner's intent is a key piece of your strategy because as a business owner, every aspect of leading and growing your business is simpler when you have a clear owner's intent – a defined end goal. It allows you to filter every decision through the lens of that purpose, that intent. My goal for this episode is to help you understand the purpose of your owner's intent and, if you don't have one already, help you identify what that intent is so that you can use it as a guide this year. Because here's the thing I've found: many entrepreneurs are building their businesses somewhat blindly… chasing growth, building the business you think you're *supposed* to be building, only to wonder why something feels off. Often, it's because your actions and plans aren't aligned with the kind of business that YOU want to be building.  On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn: What different owner's intents can look like for different businesses How to define what success looks like for you, so that you can focus on that Why so many entrepreneurs are chasing the wrong thing Whether or not GROWTH should be your goal 5 key differences between a growth-focused business and a profit-focused business How identifying your personal owner's intent will simplify your life and business this year   Are you ready to make 2024 a different kind of year? Ep. 285: What Self-Sabotage Actually Looks Like (And Why it's Hard to See for Ourselves)

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 23, 2024 21:43

When we want to make changes in our lives and businesses, one of the things that can trip us up or slow us down is that we mis-diagnose. We THINK the problem is this thing, so we focus on solving that, or getting help with that, when in reality the actual issue is something altogether different than we thought. It may not even be CLOSE to what we were focusing on. It's the reason those breakthrough moments, those AHA! moments in life are so memorable – because we finally come to terms with the problems that have probably existed for a long time. That clarity is invaluable. We talk about "getting in our heads", being in our "own way", or getting out of our own way, in order to grow and evolve and to go after those things in life that we're each uniquely called to. Self-sabotage is widely misunderstood, and it's something every single one of us, as the owners of human brains, experience. In this episode, I want to share with you what self-sabotage actually looks like, why it is easier to see in other people and harder to see for ourselves, and why understanding this part of ourselves and how we were created matters SO MUCH when it comes to problem solving and growth. Author Brianna Wiest describes self-sabotage as a mountain that often stands between us and the kind of lives and businesses we really want. She says, “Maybe you know what your mountain is. Maybe it's addiction, weight, relationships, jobs, motivation or money. Maybe you don't. Maybe it's a vague sense of anxiety, low self-esteem, fear, or a general discontentment that seems to bleed out onto everything else. The mountain is often less a challenge in front of us as it is a problem within us, an unstable foundation that might not seem evident on the surface, but it nonetheless shifting almost every part of our lives. Usually when we have a problem that is circumstantial, we are facing a reality of life. When we have a problem that is chronic, we are facing the reality of ourselves. We often think that to face a mountain means to face life's hardships, but the truth is that it is almost always because of the years we have spent accumulating tiny traumas, adaptations, and coping  mechanisms, all of which have compounded over time.” This is why it's so hard to see what we can't see. Why having someone else shine a light on what we can't see is so invaluable.   On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn:   • What's often misunderstood about self-sabotage that will change how you think about it • The two important roles of our brain that cause frequent internal conflict for us • Why we do things we say we don't want to do, and put off the things that we say matter to us • How procrastination and perfectionism connect to self-sabotage • The two competing desires we all face on repeat: growth vs. comfort • Why uncomfortable emotions have purpose in our lives, and are meant to be FELT • How both pride and fear can lead us to self-sabotage • The importance of addressing mindset and what's going on for you internally as a mom and business owner when you want to SIMPLIFY In part, I pray that this episode is that light for you – pointing out something that is holding you back that you just haven't been able to put your finger on or have been able to see. Story has become a bit of a buzzword in online marketing and business in the last few years, and there's a reason for that.    Stories are powerful.    We learn and communicate through narratives. We FEEL things through the power of a good story, right – it's why we want to watch the movie that we know is going to make us sad or scared or laugh out loud – stories, whether books or movies, a piece of well-written copy or a heart-to-heart conversation with a friend evokes real, meaningful feelings. As humans, stories resonate with us because they connect us in the most personal and intimate way – the kind of understanding that can only come through emotion. Through my own experience as an entrepreneur and as a coach for other moms called to business, I've seen that the two most valuable ways I serve clients in both their lives and businesses have everything to do with story. The stories we tell ourselves (mindset) and the stories we tell our people (through our messaging). What the two have in common is psychology… human behavior, understanding what drives us, what shapes and influences our thinking and emotions.    I've found that the more I learn about ME, the more I work on better understanding myself through thought work and mindset and personal growth and learning, the better I understand YOU – and that matters not only in the ways I can help guide you as a coach, but also how you begin to change how you think about yourself, your business, your family and all of the other humans in your life – including the people you serve in your business.    STORIES are powerful and as moms and wives, creatives and entrepreneurs, I truly believe our stories are our greatest asset when it comes to prioritizing peace and profit in our lives and businesses. So let's talk about the two most valuable stories you can prioritize when it comes to your quality of life, your peace, your mental and emotional health, AND your finances… the wealth and profit you want to create through the business you've been called to. Because as I've connected the dots over the years, your peace, and your profit, have EVERYTHING TO DO with the stories you tell.   On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn: • The two types of problems business owners need to know how to manage • Why most coaching fails to address both, and instead focuses on one or the other • Why it's often hard to see the stories we're telling ourselves • How our own growth and self-understanding make us more relatable to our clients • Why understanding why you think what you think, feel what you feel and do what you do matters to both your own peace and profit • How the messaging in your business builds trust and connects you to your dream clients • How you can work with me in 2024    Are you ready to make 2024 a different kind of year? Early on in my business, I was asked this of my future plans: “Are you willing to do whatever it takes?” It was insinuated that I should be answering in the affirmative. In my heart, I knew my answer: a hard no. At first I wondered if this would be a problem. Then, I was terrified. The fear of a successful business meaning I was going to have to hustle, hurry and possibly compromise things I cared about most stopped me in my tracks. Then one day, I considered if having to do “whatever it takes” might be a lie. And I decided to do business differently as a mom. If you're not willing to do “whatever it takes” to create your version a “successful” business, that's not only okay… that's a great realization. Because it means you have values and priorities you aren't willing to compromise. (Same.) On this episode of BEYOND, we're talking about what it looks like to do life and business differently. I'm sharing:   • What I'm not willing to do for the sake of my business “success” • Why I believe these non-negotiables have set my business apart and led to both profitability and sustainability • Common lies in the messaging that peppers the online business world • What four areas you need to focus on when you're unwilling to exchange your quality of life and peace for the sake of your business growth Are you wanting to make 2024 a different kind of year? This episode struck such a chord, I'm excited to share again whether you're replaying or catching it for the first time.   A few Sundays ago, a guest pastor at our church shared words that stuck with me, “You can have an amazing life, but not really be alive.” His words stood out and I instantly thought about how many of us are living on autopilot, going through the motions, feeling like we're missing out on our actual lives. My guest on this episode of BEYOND: The Podcast for Moms Called to Business, Jenn Kautsch, helps women wake up and feel fully alive again – specifically, through a lifestyle that includes living alcohol free. Jenn Kautsch (pronounced Couch) is the founder and creator of the SoberSis community and a leader in the “Sober Curious” movement. She lives in Fort Worth, Texas with her husband of 27 years. She's also the mom of two adult children in their early 20s. Jenn launched SoberSis on Christmas Day of 2017 and since then, more than 200,000 women have downloaded her free “Happy Hour Survival Guide”. Over 30,000 have participated in her 21 Day Reset Challenge.  It's her passion and life's calling to create a space where women can renegotiate their relationship with alcohol without labels, judgment or shame. She coaches women who feel stuck in the “gray area” on the drinking spectrum and helps women get off of “auto-pilot” and mindless sipping. Jenn is also the author of a book, Look Alive, Sis! 40 Days To Awaken Your Sober Mind. Uncertainty. It's an inevitable part of life and often, it terrifies us. It's easy when we feel like we have control... when we see a clear path ahead... it's not so easy to step into a season that has a lot of unknowns. My guest today on BEYOND, Rebekah Albaugh, is navigating an uncertain season right now. After years of leading a thriving wedding and portrait photography business, and co-hosting The Reset Conference, God is calling her to something new and largely unknown. Her faith in this season is inspiring and her fears are relatable, and as she shares in our conversation, the only confidence she has moving forward is the fact that her trust is anchored in an unshakeable God.   In my conversation with Rebekah, we talk about all the things: marriage, motherhood, faith, business, grief and loss, and the excitement of being called to something bigger than yourself.   Bio: Rebekah Albaugh is professional photographer (based in central Illinois) who has been joyfully photographing families, weddings and milestones since 2008. She has been blessed to have the opportunity to work in 10 different countries. Since 2003, Rebekah has been known as "Coach Albaugh's wife" to her husband's wrestling and football teams. She has responded to the title, "mom" since 2004 and eagerly boasts over her three children, Grant, Evelyn and Avery Mae. In 2013, she co-founded a national photography conference known as "The Reset Conference" which is still active today.   Most importantly, Rebekah is an unashamed fan of Jesus Christ. Having recently been asked to lead in various aspects of Christian ministry, she has been leaning into a different season of life.  She now hosts worship retreats for women in various cities around the country while still running her photography businesses.   On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn:   • How wanting to be home with her first baby motivated Rebekah to do "whatever is takes" to be with him and contribute to the family finances   • The tragic loss Rebekah experienced her senior year of high school that changed the trajectory of her life and led her to cling to her faith   • How her husband's job as a teacher led to the launch of her photography business   • Why learning not to be threatened by competition led her to embrace teaching and mentoring other photographers   • Why vanity metrics and a certain number of fans or followers does not necessarily equate to expertise or profitability in business, and the importance of defining success for YOU   • The sacrifices required of a busy wedding photography business, and what Rebekah is doing differently with her youngest child   • How her mom's life and faith journey modeled being bold in your faith and giving God the glory in circumstances the enemy wants to use to destroy   • How major life transitions, grief and losses are often the catalyst for change and being pulled into a new direction   • How the stillness of grief led to conversations with God that stripped Rebekah of the comforts of this world and gave her the gift of heavenly perspective   • Why it's necessary to shut some things down to make room for the things we're called to   • Rebekah's calling to host ministry-based retreats and how it took her 9 months to take the next step   • The fear and the excitement of being called to something that is bigger than yourself   Important links for this episode:   • Visit Rebekah's website   • Connect with Rebekah on IG • To learn more about the January retreat Rebekah is hosting in South Carolina, DM her on IG or email RebekahAlbaugh@gmail.com   I'm continuously amazed by the ways God works through our businesses to grow us both personally and spiritually, and am thankful for Rebekah sharing with us what it looks like to faithfully answer the call to something new. Ep. 279: Can't Figure it out? Find the Problem Beneath the Problem

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 12, 2023 16:02

Stuck on a problem you just can't figure out? It could be that the problem at the root of your struggle is below the surface, and you've been solving for something more on the surface.   Problems are a part of life. You and I and every other person we know is navigating life with his or her own unique set of problems. A lot of my 1:1 work with clients is about this very thing: solving problems. Working through things. Figuring out a better way to think, and/or a better way to do something. And something that has become really clear to me over the years – whether I'm the coach or I'm the client in the scenario – is that there are layers to problems. There are what I call “surface-level problems” and then there is the underlying problem that THAT surface level problem is more deeply rooted in.  Often, a client may come to me believing they need help with one thing, only to find out that at the root is an entirely different problem that needs their attention. Another way of putting it? There's the problem, and then there's the problem BENEATH the problem. Getting to the root of the problem is what's required in order to solve for it in a way that creates lasting change. This is the reason the perspective of someone else – a mentor, a coach, a therapist – is SO valuable. Because often, we're so IN our lives, we're so engrained in our problems that it can be hard for us to separate the surface-level problems from the deeper ones. It can be hard for us to see what we can't see. On this episode of BEYOND: The Podcast for Moms Called to Business you'll learn:   How to distinguish surface level problems from the problem beneath the problem 4 types of problems we commonly navigate, and the antidotes for each The role of storytelling in the creation (and solution) of a problem The value of outside perspective in getting to the root of a problem 3 questions to ask yourself to gain clarity in problem solving   When you feel stuck, when you can't figure something out or can't seem to move beyond something, get curious and start to look for what might be the problem BENEATH the problem. This is often easier for us to do when we speak into the lives of other people, like our kids, than it is for ourselves. Be patient, get curious. Ask questions.  I hope this episode has been helpful as you think about navigating the problems you face in life and business.  How we respond to the problems we face and how much we trust in ourselves to make decisions in solving those problems matters SO MUCH when it comes to being the kind of moms, wives, business owners and humans we're called to be. If you're ready for mindset and business support that will help you simplify and create the kind of life and business you're excited to wake up to, the kind that serves not only your clients but you and your family well, if you're ready to go ALL IN on making 2024 a different kind of year, I want to invite you to apply for private 1:1 coaching. Whether it's a business offering that doesn't go as expected, or the delivery of her first baby going almost the complete opposite of how she'd hoped, Elizabeth talks about plans, pivots and what it looks like to REALLY trust God.   On this guest episode with Elizabeth McCravy, you'll learn: What led Elizabeth to entrepreneurship at age 22 and how she got her very first clients as a designer The 4 different revenue streams in her business, and the 5th one she shares with her husband Adam Elizabeth's personal experience of launching a new offer only to shut it down 4 months later (and what she learned in the process) How not being a perfectionist has been helpful to the growth of her business (including the ability to delegate and grow a team) Her love of systems and processes as a creative, and what work she could see herself doing if she wasn't a designer How she's prepping for baby #2 and another maternity leave  Why moms are able to work less AND be more productive How Elizabeth's faith influences her business even though she doesn't have a Christian niche How motherhood and business are both forms of ministry God calls us to, and what it looks like to steward those callings well   Important links for this episode: Elizabeth's website: elizabethmccravy.com  Say hi over on Instagram Take the Website Personality Quiz Breakthrough Brand Podcast Ep. 224 (where Elizabeth talks about lessons learned from launching and closing her membership program)   Elizabeth is a big believer in coaching and personal growth, and it's something she's invested in along her business journey.  If you're tired of spinning your wheels and you're ready for mindset and business support that will help you simplify and create the kind of life and business you're excited to wake up to, the kind that serves not only your clients but you and your family well, I want to invite you to apply for private 1:1 coaching. Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired? Frustrated that you're always frustrated?   We're tired of running too fast and hiding behind a busy schedule, we're tired of living a life of constant problems and also pretending problems don't exist.   What's often at the root of feeling this way is a problem-focused mindset.   Here's the thing. Our brains are wired to look for problems – so this episode isn't about trying to get rid of all of your problems, pretend you don't have any problems or even to minimize them. Identifying and solving problems is an important and necessary part of our lives. It's a blessing that we were created with brains that seek to look out for us and keep us safe by being on alert for problems.   But there's a difference between finding and solving problems and being completely consumed by them – and many of us fall into that category – anticipating the next thing that's going to go wrong, constantly looking for problems on any given day or in any given situation. It can become something that consumes us. On this episode of BEYOND, I'm sharing how to know if you have a problem-focused mindset, what that might look like, how this type of mindset can steal your joy and halt your growth. I'm also describing the alternative that is available to you – how you can train your brain to stop being so problem-obsessed.   On this episode, you'll learn:   • How "negative" people in your life are often operating with a problem-focused mindset • What being consumed by problems can look like in your parenting, work and relationships • Questions our brain often asks on repeat when we are problem-focused • Why a problem-focused mindset is exhausting for ourselves and those around us • How control is at the root of a mind constantly looking for problems • How a problem-focused mindset makes it really hard to grow: both as a human being and a business owner • The intentional shift that can free you from feeling consumed by problems   If you're tired of spinning your wheels and you're ready for mindset and business support that will help you simplify, see more sales and create the kind of life and business you're excited to wake up to, the kind that serves not only your clients but you and your family well, I want to invite you to apply for private 1:1 coaching. Working with me privately is kind of like having a business therapist, marketing strategist and personal trainer for your brain all-in-one. Self-described as the "mama bear for small business" and a "nerd who loves neuroscience", Natalie Franke is a voice of strength and encouragement for entrepreneurs. What I love most about Natalie is her passion and, as I share with you on this episode, to be her in presence is to be in the presence of someone who you just know is doing the work she was made to do.   Natalie is a wife and mom of two little ones, she's an author, and at the time of our recording, she was the Chief Evangelist for HoneyBook. Soon after recording, Natalie announced her transition to working for Flodesk, the email platform that I use and love, and that's where you'll find her now – still supporting entrepreneurs in this new role as Flodesk's Head of Community.   Consider this episode a heart-to-heart and love letter from one mom "figuring it all out as she goes" to another. We cover so much ground in this conversation and discuss everything from the power of mindset and the stories we tell to knowing your numbers as a business owner, prioritizing quality time with your family as a working mom, saying NO early and often and letting yourself BE in the season of life you once prayed for.    On this episode of BEYOND,  you'll learn: • How picking up a camera in high school opened Natalie's eyes to a world of possibility, and led her to take an "untraditional path" • How loneliness as a young wedding photographer led her to found The Rising Tide Society • Her passion as a mama bear for small business and living as a "multi-passionate person with ADHD" • The beautiful story of how being raised by a devoted single mom led her to the work she's called to today • Why she believes "mindset is everything in business" and how successful entrepreneurs view failure differently • How Natalie feels about competition and the battle she fights everyday • The daily, intentional steps she takes (literally!) to grow her relationship with herself • Natalie's new book, Gutsy, and her personal struggle to overcome the fear of what other people think • How motherhood has changed the way she thinks about her doubts and fears, her body and her time   Thank you to Natalie for sharing her wisdom and heart with us. I hope this episode is such a blessing to you whether you're a working mom, a creative entrepreneur or both.   Important links for this episode: • nataliefranke.com • Check out Natalie's book, Gutsy • Say hey to Natalie over on Instagram   Natalie is a huge advocate of mindset work, and of course, I couldn't agree more. If you're tired of spinning your wheels and you're ready for mindset and business support that will help you simplify and create the kind of life and business you're excited to wake up to, the kind that serves not only your clients but you and your family well, I want to invite you to apply for private 1:1 coaching. Working with me privately is kind of like having a business therapist, marketing strategist and personal trainer for your brain all-in-one. Ep. 272: Why Your Service Isn't Selling: How to Diagnose What's Holding You Back

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2023 24:17

Why isn't your service selling? You're doing all the things… at least it feels like it, and you aren't seeing the results you want to see in your business. But there are so many variables, so many moving parts – how can you figure out what isn't working so that you can do something about it? Sales doesn't come naturally to many entrepreneurs. The truth is that being, for example, a designer, is NOT the same thing as running a design business. Being a copywriter, photographer or creative expert is not the same as building a business that offers these services, either. And same thing if you're a coach, educator or therapist – professionally executing that role is not the same thing as building a business around it. And the difference is marketing and sales. Finding your own clients. This is the biggest difference between being employed by someone else, where clients are usually found for you, and having the job of bringing in your own clients. And that's what I want to unpack with you today on this episode because sales scares the crap out of a lot of us. We don't want to feel sleezy or slimy or gross. We don't want to pressure or convince people to buy from us. We have a lot of thoughts about sales and people who sell things, and they create a lot of doubt, fear and overwhelm within us that honestly keep us from being able to serve the clients we dream of serving doing the work that we feel so called to. And, as a service provider, if your services aren't selling – either aren't selling at all, or aren't selling at the level you'd like, there are some many moving pieces, it can be hard to figure out where the problem is – what you can do differently to see different results. And that's what I want to help you with today, to shine a light on what might be holding you back from seeing the kind of sales and revenue you dream of seeing in your business. There are a number of reasons your services might not be selling, and I'm walking through five of them with you on this episode of BEYOND: The Podcast for Moms Called to Business. On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn: How sales challenges are almost always connected to your mindset or your messaging  Where to focus when you need a bigger audience to know who you are and how you can help them (through more visibility) Why knowing the nuances of your specific, unique client matters so much and why they won't be able to hear you above the noise otherwise How it's really hard to sell if you aren't personally sold first What it means to clearly articulate your value How the fear of selling can paralyze your business (and how you can change this) Sales are a critical piece of building a profitable business and creating more of them is directly connected to our mindset and messaging. If you're tired of spinning your wheels and you're ready for mindset and business support that will help you simplify, see more sales and create the kind of life and business you're excited to wake up to, the kind that serves not only your clients but you and your family well, I want to invite you to apply for private 1:1 coaching. Working with me privately is kind of like having a business therapist, marketing strategist and personal trainer for your brain all-in-one. Overcomplicating is second nature for many of us. It's not that we complicate our lives, relationships and businesses intentionally – we're not aware of what we're creating when we make the choices we do. We can't see what we can't see and often, without that awareness, we just go through our days believing we're doing the best we can.    In reality – there is a much better way to build a business. Simpler. More ease-filled, FUN and peaceful. If building a business as a creative or coach and a mom feels incredibly difficult, I have good news – it doesn't have to be that way. And when we open ourselves up to that possibility, when we create the space to consider something different, both our confidence and quality of life increases.   On this episode of BEYOND: The Podcast for Moms Called to Business, I'm sharing 7 different ways you can begin simplifying your business today. You'll learn:   • How to find the right amount of useful programs and apps that serve your business without creating distraction, overwhelm and unnecessary expenses • Why trying to do it all is killing your productivity, and what to do instead • My thoughts on when you should hire help, and when it's too soon • The one thing that simplified my calendar and makes scheduling a breeze • Why planning time for thinking and creativity as a CEO matters now – not "someday" when there's more time • What minimalist marketing is and how to leverage it for your peace and profitability • The difference between emotional-driven decisions and data-driven decisions   If you want to continue the conversation beyond the podcast, if you are ready for the combination of life support and business strategy you need in navigating the highs and lows as a mom and entrepreneur, I want to invite you to apply for 1:1 coaching. Warm desert hues highlighting shades of pink, a playful yet refined boho vibe paired with hand drawn fonts and custom illustrations… this is the aesthetic fingerprint Bri Summers has become known for through Brighten Made, her branding and web design studio that serves female entrepreneurs. With a distinct style that has evolved over the past six years, Bri and her team have tackled an array of design projects, from full branding for small businesses to book cover design for Jenna Kutcher. But the thing she's proudest of as an ambitious, enneagram-3 creative entrepreneur? It's the life she's built alongside the growth of Brighten Made. The freedom and flexibility Bri once dreamt of as a recent college grad bored with aspects of corporate life have led to a reality she loves. And building a business on her terms has never felt more rewarding than now as she transitions into life as a brand new mom. (Though this episode was recorded during her pregnancy, Bri and her husband Joe welcomed baby girl Navy in September 2023).  On this episode of BEYOND: The Podcast for Moms Called to Business, Brianna shares some of the defining moments in her journey to building a successful design business and how preparing for motherhood led to asking some important life questions she hadn't really considered before.  During this interview with Bri, you'll learn: Why Bri believes mindset and confidence are key both in owning your own style as a creative and in building a business on your terms Why defining “enough” is crucial in designing a business and life that you actually want to be living, especially when you value quality of life and don't want to work 24/7 What it looks like to create work with integrity, and how she stays interested and inspired in her own creativity without overconsuming social media How Bri has leveraged her unique design style as a marketing strategy where her work “sells itself” How growing a team led her to true time freedom and the ability to prioritize rest and travel How pregnancy forced her to slow down and lead to life-changing reflections about what's most important in life, and what isn't How God has used her business to both grow and humble her What her (loose) plans are for her maternity leave and beyond   I hope this episode is so encouraging when you think about doing life and business differently as a creative entrepreneur, educator or coach. Freedom and being able to create our own rules are two of the compelling reasons so many of us are drawn to entrepreneurship, and yet making that reality is a completely different story. Giving yourself permission to do things your way can come with doubt, fear, imposter syndrome, FOMO and so much more – but when you want to live a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside, it's so worth it.   If you want to continue the conversation beyond the podcast, if you are ready for the combination of life support and business strategy you need in navigating the highs and lows as a mom and entrepreneur, I want to invite you to apply for 1:1 coaching. Why have I built my business as a coach by focusing on serving clients 1:1? It's a smart and simple way to build a business for both creatives and coaches, and it's highly underrated.   Spend a little time in the online business world and you'll quickly see the PUSH to grow and scale through the creation of courses, group programs, memberships and more. And it's not that these are never valid options for growing a business – sometimes, they can be. But personal and high-touch work of 1:1 can be seen as a "starting point" or stepping stone, when in reality, a focus on individual client work and services can be THE answer to a highly profitable business that supports flexibility and quality of life – values especially important to the moms called to business whom I serve.   On this episode, I'm sharing why I LOVE the 1:1 business model for creative entrepreneurs and coaches:   • The 1:1 business model is clean and simple. • It supports a spacious and flexible calendar. • You really get to know your clients and build relationships with them. • I don't see 1:1 services EVER going out of demand   You might be asking, "But what about scaling a 1:1 business? You can't do that." It's time for some tough love, friend.   One of the most important parts of my job as a mindset and business coach for creatives and coaches, I've learned, is the ability to share the (sometimes) hard truths – to give tough love. Because let's be honest, as humans, often what we NEED to hear isn't what we want to hear. But I think I'd be doing my clients and you, my listener, a HUGE disservice if I weren't willing to share some hard truths with you.  As a coach, I get to see behind-the-scenes of a lot of businesses. And often, what strikes me are the similarities – the patterns. I see some of the very same things holding so many of you back from your goals, from creating the lives and businesses that you really want to be living. And I know you don't want to be working all the time, which means that you need to be stewarding your time well, using it in the most profitable ways, guided by clean and intentional thinking that helps you make it happen. And that brings us to what today's episode is all about. Tough Love. In our time together today I want to offer you five things that you need to stop doing right now in your business. Some of them may surprise you. Some of them may strike a chord. Ruffle your feathers. Some of them may shift your perspective and open you up to better ways of doing things. These pieces of tough love apply no matter what stage of business you're in – they are just as true if you're just getting started as they are if you are years and years into your business and seeing profit margins you once dreamed of. No matter where you are on that timeline or what type of business you're leading, I am confident there is something for you personally in this episode. On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn: The difference between building an audience and converting followers into paying clients Why intentional strategy matters before you create another piece of content The main reason I see entrepreneurs lacking confidence in their offers and their ability to deliver results One thing you're waiting on right now that is keeping you from meeting your next client The difference between motivation and commitment, and why you need to say goodbye to one of them A big lie that is making you feel terrible while also making it impossible to trust yourself and move forward toward your goals   Are you ready for private 1:1 life and business support in this season as a creative entrepreneur or coach?
