Quand un artiste incontournable du monde des comic books entreprend d'adapter l'un des auteurs les plus influents de la Pop Culture, le résultat ne peut être qu'une fresque époustouflante porteuse d'un message qui traverse les âges. Un achèvement concrétisé par Bloodstar de Richard Corben, d'après Robert E. Howard. Le Choc des TitansLa route fut longue, sinueuse, semée d'embûches, faites de pentes et de rampes aux inclinaisons ahurissantes, mais il me semble que l'on peut désormais l'affirmer avec plus ou moins de certitude : la bande dessinée américaine n'est plus considérée comme une catégorie inférieure du neuvième art. En tout cas, plus autant qu'avant. Les mentalités évoluent, et les lecteurs comprennent depuis quelque temps l'importance de l'aspect historique et culturel de certaines publications. Les éditeurs aussi l'ont compris : entre les intégrales de Panini Comics, qui vont chercher de plus en plus de pépites jusqu'alors négligée du catalogue de Marvel; la collection Urban Cult, qui propose de redécouvrir Animal Man, Grendel ou encore Camelot 3000; Huginn & Muninn qui offrent enfin une édition honorable à Madman de Mike Allred en France; et même Reflexions, qui fête le trentième anniversaire de Image Comics en nous proposant les intégrales de CyberForce; on voit désormais fleurir dans nos bibliothèques des comics au format parfois luxueux, et reflétant toute la richesse du patrimoine de la bande dessinée américaine. S'il y a bien un éditeur français qui se plie en quatre pour réaliser un véritable travail de préservation de la BD anglo-saxonne, c'est Delirium. Aux côtés de Judge Dredd, de The Mask, ou des Nextmen de John Byrne, on trouve au catalogue de l'éditeur de véritables bijoux comme Nemesis de Pat Mills, Nexus de Mike Baron et Steve Rude, mais aussi une impressionnante collection dédiée au travail de Richard Corben. Récompensé à de multiples reprises pour son travail, Richard Corben est une figure incontournable de la bande dessinée indépendante américaine. Après avoir travaillé pour Warren Publishing et Métal Hurlant, Corben fondera son propre label : Fantagor Press, avant de collaborer avec les Big Two sur des séries comme Hellblazer, pour le label Vertigo de DC Comics, et des personnages comme Luke Cake ou le Punisher chez Marvel. Son trait particulièrement reconnaissable, ses univers à la fois exotiques et inquiétants, ses personnages aussi candides qu'abîmés, et un érotisme latent, parfois décrié, font de l'œuvre de Corben un ensemble riche mais homogène, qui dépeint le plus souvent un monde où règne la loi du plus fort. Avec Bloodstar, dont la première parution remonte à 1976 chez The Morning Star Press aux États-Unis, Corben adapte une nouvelle de l'incontournable auteur texan Robert E. Howard : La Vallée du Ver (The Valley of the Worm), publiée en 1934 dans le magazine Weird Tales. Né en 1906, Robert Ervin Howard est un écrivain très prolifique comptant parmi les pères fondateurs de la Fantasy moderne. Créateur de Solomon Kane, Kull, mais aussi, évidemment, de Conan le Barbare, qui deviendra son personnage le plus populaire et dont le succès sera longtemps entretenu par les comics et le cinéma. Ses histoires ont fait les belles heures des pulps, magazines bon marché très populaires aux États-Unis durant la première moitié du XXe siècle et dans lesquels de nombreux auteurs de science-fiction et de fantastique ont fait leurs débuts, de Isaac Asimov à Edgar Rice Burroughs, en passant par Philip K. Dick, Ray Bradburry ou Frank Herbert. En 1936, quand il apprend que sa mère atteinte de tuberculose, et dont il prend soin depuis de nombreuses années, ne sortira plus du coma, Howard, déjà dans un état dépressif sévère, se suicide d'une balle dans la tempe. Mort à seulement 30 ans, il laisse derrière lui un univers incroyablement riche et documenté, fruit d'un travail minutieux et acharné. Si on lui doit d'avoir défini le genre que l'on nomme aujourd'hui Sword & Sorcery, il aura également été l'auteur de nombreuses histoires de western, d'horreur et de sport, plus particulièrement sur le thème de la boxe. Société, tu m'auras pas !Contemporain de H.P. Lovecraft, Howard a entretenu avec ce dernier une correspondance aussi soutenue qu'amicale. Et bien qu'ils ne se soient jamais rencontrés, on peut parfois ressentir l'influence de l'un dans le travail de l'autre. Les deux auteurs possèdent pourtant des visions assez différentes du monde qui les entoure. Les écrits de Lovecraft sont le reflet des craintes et des fascinations, souvent complémentaires, de son temps. Ils traduisent sa peur de l'inconnu et son profond mal-être dans une société dont les évolutions le dépassent et le répugnent. Chez Lovecraft, la menace est extérieure, étrangère, tandis que Howard, lui, dépeint plutôt des civilisations qui, autrefois luxuriantes, sont sur le déclin. Dans ses récits, le monde s'effondre de l'intérieur. Si cela renvoie, comme chez Lovecraft, à une peur du changement, on peut y voir de façon plus pragmatique les inquiétudes d'un Américain moyen dans un pays qui fait face à une crise économique sans précédent tandis que l'ombre de la guerre se fait plus menaçante que jamais en Europe… De ce point de vue, les histoires de Robert E. Howard gardent une valeur intemporelle qui leur permet d'être encore très pertinentes aujourd'hui. Le lecteur peut facilement s'identifier à ses personnages, généralement des héros solitaires, évoluant dans des cités décadentes gangrenées par le crime et les croyances occultes, et inévitablement amené à user de la violence pour survivre dans un monde de plus en plus cruel. Quand chez Lovecraft, la vérité paraît être l'ultime menace qui rend fou quand on lui fait face, Howard voit surtout le danger dans l'autre. Dans ses récits, aider son prochain peut vous permettre de trouver un allié qui vous épaulera pour survivre dans un monde hostile, ou vous conduire à votre perte.  En ce sens, les univers de Robert E. Howard et de Richard Corben ne pouvaient que se rencontrer. Dans Bloodstar, on suit le périple du personnage du même nom, guerrier d'une tribu d'Aesirs qui va devoir surmonter de nombreuses épreuves. Entre de sanglantes guerres tribales, des bêtes sauvages affamées et son amour impossible pour la femme promise à son nouveau chef, qui l'amènera à être exilé, Bloodstar n'aura de cesse de prouver sa bravoure et sa dévotion envers les personnes qu'il aime, jusqu'à un ultime affrontement avec une effroyable créature surgie des profondeurs de la Terre. Au fil des pages, Richard Corben esquisse une désolation onirique, un monde futuriste sauvage qui, un peu comme dans Hawkmoon de Michael Moorcock, a régressé après une succession de cataclysmes et dans lequel l'être humain cède à ses pulsions les plus barbares. Dans ces paysages farouches et anxiogènes, l'artiste n'est pas un explorateur, c'est un guide : à travers ses jeux d'ombres et de lumières, il nous emporte dans un univers dont la poésie n'a d'égal que la brutalité et on comprend très vite que personne ne peut y vivre en sécurité très longtemps. Il existe cependant plusieurs différences entre la nouvelle originale de Howard et son adaptation par Richard Corben, principalement parce que Corben développe beaucoup plus le caractère des personnages secondaires et ajoute une véritable romance entre Bloodstar et Helva, qui n'était même pas nommée dans La Vallée du Ver. L'aspect post-apocalyptique du récit est également un ajout propre à Bloodstar, même s'il rejoint la pensée collapsologiste de Howard et respecte sa vision des dérives sociétales, des difficultés de la vie en communauté à l'impact de l'homme sur son environnement. Bloodstar, c'est aussi une histoire d'héritage. Là où le héros de la nouvelle de Robert E. Howard semblait se souvenir de ses vies passées le temps d'un songe, Richard Corben transpose cette notion dans une relation père-fils inachevée, une brillante synthèse de la façon dont les mythes classiques ont inspiré la littérature populaire, qui a elle-même nourri la bande dessinée. Une thématique d'autant plus symbolique quand on sait que cette œuvre, vendue par son premier éditeur comme l'un des tous premiers romans graphiques, aurait pu tomber dans l'oubli et ne jamais nous parvenir. Il aura en effet fallu près de dix ans pour réunir et restaurer les planches de Corben afin d'offrir une réédition digne de ce nom à Bloodstar. Un travail opiniâtre de Laurent Lerner, José Villarrubia et de toute l'équipe de Delirum, pour redonner vie à cette œuvre, quatre décennies après son édition française en couleurs chez les Humanoïdes Associés, dans une version en noir et blanc plus respectueuse de ce que Richard Corben considérait comme l'un de ses travaux préférés. L'ouvrage est complété par une préface de François Truchaud, traducteur spécialiste de Robert E. Howard, malheureusement décédé en 2020, tout comme Richard Corben. On trouve également en fin de volume une galerie de planches originales qui régalera les amateurs du style inimitable de l'artiste. La démarche de préservation du patrimoine de la bande dessinée cultivée par Delirium est essentielle et elle trouve un véritable écho auprès du lectorat, en témoigne le succès du financement participatif sur KissKissBankBank qui a collecté plus de dix fois la somme de son objectif initial pour la réédition du livre. Un héritage culturel et artistique, voilà ce qu'est Bloodstar. Un témoignage du lien naturel existant entre les pulps et les comics, et de la portée universelle du message qui peut être contenu dans toute fiction, au-delà des genres et des formats. Sans s'afficher comme une œuvre revendicatrice, le Bloodstar de Richard Corben porte des valeurs héritées des maîtres de la science-fiction et du fantastique tout en entraînant le lecteur dans un voyage qui invite à la réflexion sur notre monde et sur son évolution. Si vous voulez soutenir Delirium et son impressionnant travail éditorial, le mieux à faire est d'aller directement passer commande sur leur site !N'hésitez pas à partager cet épisode sur les réseaux sociaux s'il vous a plu ! Hawkmoon Resources CEO Branden Haynes joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share news the company has completed its 3000 metres summer drill program at the Wilson Gold Project which is in Quebec. Haynes told Proactive the company drilled 10 holes with an average depth of 300 metres per hole. Haynes said Mineralized zones were seen in all ten holes and 4 holes have been sent to the lab with the other 6 to be delivered soon.

Hawkmoon Resources CEO Branden Haynes and Vice President of Exploration Thomas Clarke joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share news the company has received assay results for 12 drill holes from the summer drill program on the Wilson gold project in Quebec. Clarke telling Proactive, every hole intersected at least one altered and mineralized zone. The two key holes were HMW 21-24 and HMW 21-25. A near surface intercept was encountered in HMW 21-24 with 10.0 grams per tonne while HNW 21-25 returned 2 meters at 6.3 grams per tonne at 109 meters down hole. Haynes telling Proactive his thoughts on the summer program and what is means for the project in general.

Hawkmoon Resources CEO Branden Haynes joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share news the company has acquired a 100% interest in the Wilson East Property . This property is contiguous withHawkmoon's existing land package. Haynes telling Proactive Wilson East is composed of 6 claims totalling approximately 338 hectares. Haynes also said the primary areas of interest range from the Verneuil-Serem Ouest showing eastwards along a sheared contact between the volcanics and gabbro.

That Property located to the west of the Belleterre gold mining camp and its greenstone belt and is underlain by tonalite that might host potential orogenic gold‐type mineralization. Haynes telling Proactive The 10-hole, 1000-metre drill program will target the LSZ over a 400-metre horizontal distance down to a maximum vertical depth 100 metres. Haynes also points out that only one of three holes drilled in this area in 2007 intersected the LSZ with an interval of 0.6 grams per tonne gold over 11.4 metres from 8.64 metres1.

This week we got information regarding the next event in Destiny 2, Solstice of Heroes. The Summer event is a celebration of Guardian accomplishments and the rewards are some cool looking armor that you level up by doing different things. It can get quite grindy especially if you are going after all three classes. Next we fell back into the hole talking about Hawkmoon coming back and just the idea of sunsetting and re-issues as well.
