Allen & Linda Anderson, the husband and wife team that have brought us numerous books on the animal-human connection, have done it again with their latest book, Dogs & the Women Who Love Them. This book shares with its readers the inspirational true stories that celebrate the companionship between the female-canine teams featured within its pages. In this podcast, the Andersons talked about why they wrote this book, how it felt to have this book listed in Oprah Winfrey's O Magazine, and what one of their favorite chapters was in the book. In addition, since I work with so many people that are going through the grieving process due to the loss of their beloved furry family members, I also briefly talked with the Andersons about their book, Saying Goodbye to Your Angel Animals. If you have ever experienced the loss of an animal in your family, this book is a "must read" in my opinion.

Hershall, today is a wonderful day on the virtual church cast. I allowed Bro. Brooks to start the program and he did a wonderful rendition (big word) of Deacon Dustin leading service in my absence. We moved from there to speak about the importance of keeping our word and it got plum (rural idiom to describe an extreme amount of something) convicted. After that we had some feedback during which the Songleader, Brad Cottrell, suggested that Dustin start a ministry doing Kid's Crusades. He is a very talented sound effect man.... a one man production of sorts. We also heard from Sis. Connie of the Basement Bargains who apparently has been in hiding since the recent eclipse. Following that I (Devin Birdsong) had a HUGE announcement to make which placed me in strong solidarity (big word) with Deacon Dustin on a highly debated topic here on Pod'N Me. Enjoy! On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are letting the love of the darn cutest puppies wash over us! We watched the 2023 film from Richard Alan Reid and Nicholas Fabiano, Puppy Love.I know that these two characters, Nicole and Max, clearly have personal issues that they need to work on. That's an unassailable fact (and Max probably had a lot more work to do, but who's keeping score?).But when there are a couple of adorable dogs in the mix? How in the world could anybody be anything but absolutely charming and content? Episode 339: Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows with Dr. Melanie Joy Every day we are confronted with a relational paradox that begs an answer to these two questions. “What enables caring people to participate in, or otherwise support, practices that harm others, be they human or nonhuman? And what, then, could help shift this psychological orientation?” Questions Dr. Melanie Joy found answers to by researching the psychosociology of eating animals, a phenomenon she named carnism. What Dr. Joy concluded is this. “Eating (certain) animals results from extensive social and psychological conditioning that causes naturally empathic and rational people to distort their perceptions and block their empathy so that they act against their values of compassion and justice without fully realizing what they're doing. In other words, carnism teaches us to violate the Golden Rule without knowing or caring that we're doing so.” Deconstructing our carnistic system taught her how violent or oppressive ideologies are structured. (Powerarchy, 2019) When Melanie was twenty-three years old, she ate a contaminated hamburger (campylobacter) and became severely sick, needing hospitalization. Surviving this incident—and questioning other aspects of how she and most of the rest of us were raised—took her on a journey from meat-eater, and vegetarian to vegan and activist, theorist, author, social entrepreneur, and the eighth recipient of the Ahimsa Award validating her work on global nonviolence. The Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela received this same award. You can hear her brilliance as we discuss Why we love dogs, eat pigs, and wear cows. Today, our purpose is not to convince you to eat a plant-based diet. Our goal is to expand your awareness about choices and encourage becoming an ally. What compelled our family to become vegan in 2021 was a long journey that began by reading World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle, Ph.D., during yoga teacher training in 2016. Dr. Tuttle's belief floored me. It was a disturbing ‘aha' moment. He believes we will not have world peace until we stop killing animals. Growing up on a dairy farm, I was initially horrified by how many animals we killed and ate. I realized we were not allowed to name our cows and pigs because seeing these animals as pets would make it almost impossible to kill them, so we were taught emotional detachment. Of course, our farmers aren't in the business of killing animals. They are in the business of raising animals and crops to provide food to others, us consumers. What does a farmer do when their livelihood needs to change? They reconfigure their businesses. You will find out how a global sausage maker transformed his business. Pondering that new awareness about how I grew up, our daughter, Olivia, encouraged us to watch documentaries like Cowspiracy, Inconvenient Truth, Blackfish, Seaspiracy, and What The Health. After that last documentary, we committed to going 98% vegan. There are situations where there are no plant-food based, so we allow ourselves to choose. My learning continues. I have read books like How Not To Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease by Michael Greger, M.D. FACLM and founder of nutritionfacts.org, and The Proof is in The Plants by Simon Hill. What has made it easier to live a plant-based lifestyle was helped with the results of today's Guest Mentor's work and Dr. Melanie Joy's collaborations with other organizations to transform how food producers and manufacturers run their businesses. A positive consequence is more options in the grocery store. Transitioning to plant-based foods is more accessible now because we have more choices, i.e., coconut and almond milk, chia seeds to replace sugar, beyond burgers, and the Impossible and Violife products to replace animal by-products like beef, sausage, and dairy. The evidence is compelling if you do not want to die from heart disease, lung disease, digestive cancers, infections,

We're going to introduce you to a word today that may be new but is something many of us unknowingly participate in on a daily basis. That word is “carnism.” Melanie Joy coined the word in her work as a Harvard-educated psychologist and author specializing in the psychology of eating animals, social transformation, and relationships. What exactly is carnism? It's the Invisible belief system in our culture that conditions us to eat certain animals and not others. Her book title actually sums it up perfectly, Why we Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows. From birth, we're conditioned to believe that cows, chickens, pigs, and fish are food…and, here in America, dogs and cats are pets. We don't even question it. The fact that this belief system is so ingrained in our culture is, in fact, carnism. But, my friends, the tide is turning as people are waking up and becoming more aware that, We don't have to consume animals to survive and thrive There are better and more humane ways to treat animals – ALL of which deserve respect and dignity And, we simply don't have to act against our core values as empathetic human beings Awareness is the first step and with awareness, we are better able to think freely and act compassionately, to create healthier and more fulfilling relationships and a more equitable and sustainable world. This month we watched and discussed the beloved camp classic, Jupiter Ascending. What makes a good movie, anyway? After a four week hiatus, Samantha is ready to talk about what's been going on. What was supposed to be an exciting week promoting her NFT growth partners adventure, turned into tears as she returned home just in time for her precious dog Priscilla to pass away. Scott, her brother, joins her to help her through the episode. Naturally, stories are told about auto train nightmares, and drinking tequila on an empty stomach. Top takeaways:“Priscilla was just shy of her 14th birthday” (1:58)“She was with me through really, really big moments of my life, like I got her a monthbefore my 19th birthday, she lived in every NYC apartment with me, she was therewhen I had my first boyfriend, first real heartbreak, first real job, graduating college, etc.” (5:00)“She became a stepmom with me” (5:14)“I've never lost such a prominent fixture where it affected my every day life” (7:12)“Her life wasn't taken from her, it's a celebration” (8:16)“He was mad I didn't eat anything that day, such a Jewish father” (11:01)“It's something that I hope West always remembers” (13:38)“It's interstate, so you're kinda in the middle of nowhere... well the car breaksdown” (16:23)“I ended up calling 911 because Samantha had such a bad panic attack” (17:31)“Basically I finally go to load my car, I pull it over to the side because I wanna check infirst. I walk in to get my ticket and the lady looks at me with a blank face and goes“yeah were all sold out of rooms” (22:02)“You know kid, I just bought a house down here and we got feral things in the backyardand that's what it sounds like. Do you have a feral pig in your bag?” (27:40)“Will I take the auto train back in a few weeks? I'm not sure yet” (31:09)“So basically in a week we celebrated the life of Priscilla, we dealt with you getting toodrunk and having your father yell at you like you were 16 and snuck out, and Scott hada 24 hour auto train experience” (32:10)
If you've ever loved a pet like a dog, a cat, or even a hamster, you'll appreciate this conversation of a man and his companion "Scrappy" Scrappy didn't come from a pedigreed, but he found herself more in service of helping people who were lonely, recovering, or just in need of someone to hug. Osha & Dr. Melanie Joy engage in a fascinating discussion of the psychology of carnism & explore how we are influenced to treat some beings with dignity while oppressing others. Dr. Joy, founder of Beyond Carnism, has received the prestigious Ahimsa Award - previously given to the Dalai Lama & Nelson Mandela - for her work on global non-violence. Dr. Melanie Joy is a Harvard educated psychologist, international speaker & author of 5 books, including Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows, (just released in its 10th Anniversary Edition) and the award winning books: Beyond Beliefs; Powerarchy; and Getting Relationships Right . "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian. " - Sir Paul McCartney How do we justify cruelty? Dr. Joy explores the deep psychological and societal ideologies that allow us to perpetuate cruelty to others that we classify as not deserving of dignity or compassion. "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Mahatma GandhiWe take a look at the roots of racism, sexism and violence against others - and how this is related to our climate crisis and - the future for humanity. In her book, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows, Dr. Joy investigates factory farming, exposing how cruelly the animals are treated, the hazards that meatpacking workers face, and the environmental impact of raising more than 10 billion animals for food each year. Provocative ans challenging, this book will change the way you think about food forever. We discuss how even those who eat meat can become allies and advocates for preventing cruelty to animals. In this episode we begin by reading Rumi's poem "Love Dogs", then we discuss how to connect with spiritual entities and the link with desire; the case for mysticism as magick; defining desire as distinct from needs and wants; the characteristics of desire: persistence and authenticity; working with desire as the daily grind of the magician; desire versus will and intention; desire and identity; magickal development as a continual engagement with desire; a dream of a woman who was both mother and lover; dying in dreams; the relationship to the woman in the dream; a ritual to communicate with her and the message received; a defiling dream; mystical union with a goddess; looking and being seen as having become the same; fruition through the door of no-self; the dream as a shadow of the subsequent experience of union; the dream as a defilement that had to be recognised as such; the specific nature of the relationship to the divine; the contrast between this and the relationship to demonic spirits; demonic spirits as the object of desire; divine spirits as offering cessation of desire and experiences beyond the human; control versus surrender; a possible way of failing to recognise the divine; an overwhelming and substance-induced kundalini awakening; the work of Tara Springett and her perspective on the psychotherapeutic treatment of kundalini awakening; compassion practice and how it helps; surrender to Kali and a manifestation of the goddess; mystical union following kundalini awakening, and its aftermath; desire as the bridge to union with the divine; the erotic component of images of the divine; becoming a love dog. Our dogs... Sparky, Scruffy, and Shadow!
Pigs are sadly widely thought about as fat, ugly, stupid and lazy. They are one of the most exploited animals and we use almost every bit of their body. On the other hand, dogs are considered smart, loyal, trainable and social. But is this really accurate? Are pigs really stupid? How do pigs stack up from a cognition, emotion and social point of view compared to dogs? And if pigs are in fact intelligent, why do we eat them but not dogs?We discuss all of the above questions (and more), and highlight some interesting studies that provide us with good insight.
