Episode 65 of What Gives?—the Jewish philanthropy podcast from Jewish Funders Network, hosted by JFN President and CEO Andrés Spokoiny. In this episode, we speak with William Daroff, CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. With decades of experience navigating Washington and Jerusalem, William offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the Conference builds consensus across a coalition of 50 diverse Jewish organizations. We explore the delicate balance between public statements and quiet diplomacy, how Jewish communal leaders respond to rising antisemitism on campus, and what it means to represent a politically diverse Jewish community in times of division and crisis. William shares his personal journey from grassroots political campaigns to the highest levels of Jewish leadership, and the lessons he's learned about relationship-building, advocacy, and the surprising power of passionate moderation. Take a listen.
At a time when most Israelis, across the political spectrum, have expressed appreciation and gratitude towards the Trump White House for pushing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to implement the Gaza cease-fire and hostage release agreement, Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), says the "vast majority" of U.S. Jews strongly oppose President Donald Trump's policies. Spitalnik, who spoke to Haaretz Podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer while on a visit to Israel for the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in Jerusalem this weekend, said "American Jews are still overwhelmingly a liberal community who believe in democracy, inclusivity and pluralism," and as such they are alarmed by Trump's policies and radical transformation of the government.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last month, President Biden rushed to sign a two-year renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). FISA allows the federal government and its intelligence agencies to spy on, collect, and monitor the data, phone calls, text messages, and emails of foreign nationals outside of the United States without a warrant. In conjunction, the Anti-Defamation League and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations also pushed Congress earlier this month to pass the controversial FISA law to spy on Americans for the protection of Israel along with the “National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism.” Nowhere to run and nowhere to hide: this is the mantra of the architects of the Surveillance State and their corporate collaborators. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Today is Day 139 of the war. Zman Yisrael editor-in-chief Biranit Goren and health reporter Renee Ghert-Zand join host Jessica Steinberg. Goren discusses Wednesday night press conference by war cabinet member MK Benny Gantz about a possible hostage deal, what details it may include and why it was Gantz and not Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaking about it. Goren also looks at the tensions and differing opinions in the war cabinet and the power plays at work among that group of politicians. Ghert-Zand talks about the predicted 30,000 Israelis who will probably suffer from PTSD in Israel after the attacks of October 7 and the ongoing war, and how psychologists and therapists plan on tackling that issue. She also discusses Ram 2, the IDF medical unit that operates inside Israeli hospitals as a kind of separate military wing for injured soldiers. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Today is Day 138 of the war. Reporters Jeremy Sharon and Canaan Lidor join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Monday saw the start of six days of hearings in The Hague's International Court of Justice over the UN General Assembly's request for an advisory opinion by the ICJ on the “legal consequences” of Israel's 56-year rule in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. We hear what has been said so far. Israel Judicial Selection Committee met -- and appointed judges -- for the first time in nearly two years. Sharon explains why the two slots on the Supreme Court remain unfilled. A Palestinian artist who has in the past exhibited with renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was arrested on last week during a search conducted by an IDF reservist battalion looking for weapons in a West Bank Bedouin village. Sharon delves into the case and shares why this is hardly an isolated case. Lidor was in Kiryat Shmona yesterday, just along Israel's border with Lebanon. Within the evacuated city, several stalwarts remain. Who are they? Earlier in the week, Lidor accompanied the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations umbrella group's first delegation to the south of Israel since October 7 and wrote about Eran Masas. Hear why his heroic story had the entire group crying. For the latest updates, please look at The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Today is Day 136 of the war. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Last night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke in front of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in Jerusalem. On Saturday night, Berman also attended a press conference in Jerusalem with the prime minister. Was the messaging the same or different in the two events? On Sunday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva compared Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza to the Holocaust, saying Israel was committing “genocide” against Palestinian civilians in the Strip and saying the only historical equivalent was “when Hitler decided to kill the Jews.” He made these remarks in front of an African Union summit. How did the setting played into his statements? The Palestinian Authority is may hold unity talks with Hamas in Moscow on February 26, PA Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said on Sunday. What is Russia's interest in holding this summit? Netanyahu sided on Sunday with far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir on Sunday, endorsing restrictions on Arab Israelis' access to Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem's Temple Mount during Ramadan. How will Hamas weaponize the optics of Israeli citizens being restricted from the holy site? And finally, Berman gives in-depth analysis into why Israel is not ready to fight another front in the north, and what factors need to change to allow it. For the latest updates, please look at The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Live blog February 19, 2024 Addressing US Jewish leaders on Gaza war, PM says: ‘We have to finish the job' Netanyahu: Those telling us not to enter Rafah are essentially saying ‘lose the war' Israel livid as Brazil's Lula says Israel like ‘Hitler,' committing genocide in Gaza Calling for ‘Palestinian unity,' PA premier urges Hamas to attend Moscow meet Reports: Siding with Ben Gvir, PM plans to limit Arab Israeli Al-Aqsa access on Ramadan THOSE WE HAVE LOST: Civilians and soldiers killed in Hamas's onslaught on Israel THOSE WE ARE MISSING: The hostages and victims whose fate is still unknown Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploration into one key issue shaping Israel and the Jewish World — right now. Within days of the murderous October 7 Hamas invasion of Israel, William Daroff, CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, headed a mission of 50 heads of Jewish legacy organizations back to Israel, where he was when the massacre occurred. In conversation with The Times of Israel this week, he describes how following the brutal slaying of 1,200 mostly citizens and hostage-taking of dozens of others, a second punch in the gut awaited him back in the United States. "While we were punched in the gut by what you experienced here, we get punched in the gut by what we experienced in America -- an incredible disconnect, a moment of cognitive dissonance where our allies, our neighbors, the people we work with, the people that we have marched with -- seemed to not get it, seemed to not understand the tragedy that had occurred. And continue to not get it.” We speak about the November 14 March for Israel rally, which brought an unprecedented 290,000 to the Washington, DC, National Mall. And how, at this moment, pernicious TikTok algorithms may dictate how the next generation of American Jewry views the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This week, we ask long-time American Jewish leader William Daroff, where American Jews can go from here and what matters now. What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on iTunes, TuneIn, Pocket Casts, Stitcher, PlayerFM or wherever you get your podcasts. Despite Israel being stronger and more stable than it has ever been, the Middle East nevertheless presents many threats to the Jewish State. Perhaps the two biggest challenges facing the country today are the Iranian nuclear threat, and the conflict with the Palestinians. World powers appear close to an agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran over a new proposed nuclear deal, which, if media reports are accurate, may be no better than the 2015 one as far as Israel is concerned. And as for the peace process, Israel's peace partner, Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority, revealed his true self recently when he refused to condemn the 1972 Munich massacre of Israeli athletes, and instead accused Israel of committing 50 Holocausts. So what does all this mean for Israel – a country of prosperity and stability, but still facing very real threats? In this week's podcast, we sit down with William Daroff, CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, a Washington, DC-based umbrella organization representing many smaller Jewish groups. Daroff is a widely regarded commentator on Israeli affairs. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thehonestreport/message

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo opens up about the Venezuelan opposition, saying keeping it united "has proven devilishly difficult," while opposition leader Juan Guaidó has been seizing control of state assets to starve the government of funding. The saga in Venezuela continues, even though it's not on the front pages of American media. During a closed-door meeting in New York City last week with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Pompeo spoke honestly about the challenges the Trump administration is facing in its attempts to overthrow the democratically elected president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro. The US narrative has been that the opposition is strong, united and legitimate.Speaking Thursday ahead of his trip to Normandy, France, US President Donald Trump said he had made clear to Mexico that he was prepared to follow through on his threat to levy 5% tariffs on Mexican exports starting June 10, rising to 25% by October. But he added: “We're having a great talk with Mexico . . . something pretty dramatic could happen.” This was a marked change of tone from Wednesday night, when he tweeted that “not nearly enough” progress had been made. I've been asking: is the threat of further tariffs a negotiating ploy? All of this while the New York Times on Thursday published an analysis titled "Which States Will Be Hit Hardest by Trump's Tariffs on Mexico."In his recent MintPress News article, "Following US Lead on Assange, Australia Goes on Assault Spree Against Free Press," Alex Rubinstein says, "The current Australian crackdown follows the example of the United States in its charges against and attempt to extradite Julian Assange. Since the United States charged journalist Julian Assange with 17 counts of Espionage Act violations — charges that could see Assange facing the death penalty — Australia appears to be following America's lead and cracking down on free press, particularly journalists and publications that publish government secrets."
