I ordered this book based on my conversation with Jenn, who is the Founder & CEO of Publish Your Purpose. There's such a disconnect that exists when it comes to the effort of marketing and branding. We tend to reflect ONLY what we think people want to see – which, granted, is very important in order to demonstrate value – but most times we end up forgoing and limiting our uniqueness, authenticity, and what's at the core of who we really are. In this episode, Jenn breaks down what she learned in the book as well as how she recognized and applied the lessons both in herself and with her clients, helping to elevate how they show up in the work they do. The book emphasizes that we all have different attributes and skills which make up our archetype, but they can all work for us – as long as we're aware of them. As we approach the end of another year, it’s time to start thinking about business strategies and what we can do to boost our business in the new year. In today’s episode, Monica speaks with Cheryl Knowlton and Kristy Hairston about some book suggestions for building your brand, personal development, and business strategies. Both guests stress the importance of reading, and with a curated list like this, you’ll know right where to start! Cheryl Knowlton Cheryl loves to read! Not only physical books, but Audible is a great hack to get more books in. Both Cheryl and Monica have their book lists on their websites, and you can also check out Goodreads, a social media platform for book sharing. The first book they discuss is Never Split the Difference, by Chris Voss. Chris was the chief hostage negotiator for the FBI, and the book focuses on different types of negotiations. In some cases, you literally can’t negotiate for half of whatever is at stake, and this book teaches you the skills to never settle for half of what you want. You can also access Chris’ material on YouTube. Cheryl and Monica discuss the idea of a win-win situation if you never split the difference. The book provides scripts and scenarios that can help you navigate different situations. They also talk about the “black swan” as a key to negotiation, and how knowing what the black swan is can change the course of the deal. The next book is Unfu*k Yourself, by Gary Bishop. Though the title is a bit colorful, it is a great personal development book. It helps you be intentional about the things that are hijacking your life. The companion workbook is an aid to help you work through these things and make real changes. The way to make fundamental changes is to make promises with ourselves, and hold ourselves accountable to those promises no matter what. Think and Grow Rich for Women, by Sharon Lechter is a great book about not only how to make money, but also talks about other motivations beyond just making money. Money means different things for different people. It uses the same language and terminology as the original, and has a lot of great quotes and affirmations, especially for women. The last two books they discuss are both from author Sally Hogshead. Fascinate is geared toward understanding branding in corporations. She took this same information and put it into How the World Sees You, which focuses more on branding for individuals. There is also a code in the back of the book for a quiz to determine your primary and secondary advantage, and how to use them. Books allow you to connect with very powerful people without having to be physically with them. Reading can make you a better real estate professional, husband or wife, son or daughter, and all-around human being. Kristy Hairston Getting Everything You Can Out of All You’ve Got, by Jay Abraham has 21 ways you can outperform your competition. It focuses on mindset and looking at other industries for principles you can apply to real estate. These steps can help you form your brand around the customer experience. The book also provides tips on how you can get clear on who you are and what you’re setting up for yourself. Kristy and Monica go in-depth about the customer experience, and how we can draw on different industries and apply those ideas to real estate, especially getting consistency in your customer experience from open houses to closing gifts. Ninja Selling by Larry Kendall focuses on the flow Kristy referenced. Sometimes we don’t have a referral-based business because we aren’t “in flow” with them. It focuses on two types of flow, auto-flow and live-flow, and how you can continue to deliver to your current customer base. It will help you identify your “Ninja 9,” nine successful habits that are done each week. Kristy talks about how she combines the ideas and principles of the two books mentioned to better suit her business. The book To Sell Is Human, by Daniel Pink is a research-heavy book that breaks down the different layers of information about our careers and industries. There are case studies across several different industries that can help shift the mindset for REALTORS® in how they present themselves and their product. This book is great for people who are looking for thoughtful insight and data. In this business, don’t forget to be uniquely you! Do that with a system and a brand for yourself. Nick Nanton speaks with world-class branding expert, Sally Hogshead. Sally is the best-selling author of books including Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resist and How The World Sees You.
In the words of Sally Hogshead, “Different is better than better.” In the second part of a 3-part series on personal branding, Jennifer shares some tools, strategies and exercises from her Personal Brand Worksheet that you can use to discover where you’re at and help to get to where you want to be. In next week’s episode, we’ll be taking what you’ll learn today out in the world. In today’s episode, Jennifer will talk through some of the steps of her Personal Brand Worksheet. This week’s episode is the second part of a 3-part series on personal branding. If you missed last week’s episode, please listen here before continuing with episode 24! What is a personal brand? Jennifer defines the personal brand as “the perception that people have of you compared to others in similar positions”. So in order to secure those opportunities that you want, you’ll have to stand out from a crowd in a big way. So where does one start? One of the best personal brand assessments that Jennifer has found was created by Sally Hogshead. You can find it in her book called Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resist or online at com Today’s world is noisier than ever and career success no longer hinges on securing a quality job. To really move up, get noticed by the right people at the right time is the name of the game. But how can you stand out when everyone else trying to do the same thing at the same time on the same platforms? You might be happy with your job today but if the 2008 recession has taught us anything, it’s that ironclad job security is a thing of the past. Rather than focusing on employment security, the new reality of work is all about employability. And that’s where your personal branding comes in. Do you have Jennifer’s Personal Branding Worksheet in front of you? Let’s get started! Feel free to pause the podcast and take your time on each section. Forget your job title. Don’t let it pigeonhole you when you’re looking to make an impression. Instead, consider: how does what you do add value? What are you most proud of? And what gets you excited? These are things that will help you stand out. Identify your skills and strengths. What do you bring to the table? What comes naturally to you? Narrow these down to 3 to 5 thing that you truly excel at. You can use the words on the worksheet for inspiration! Let’s take a look at the bigger picture. How people view you is an integral part of your personal brand. Think about how your colleagues or friends would describe you. What do you aspire to be? How do you want to make an impact in this world? We all have a personal brand whether we want to or not. So now it’s time for the hard part: ask the people around you about their perception of you to find out what your existing brand looks like. What three words would they use to describe you? Take these words and type them up into a document. No skipping allowed! Upload them to net to create a word map and find the words most commonly used to describe you. This can help you identify what people do – and don’t – associate with you, and help you figure what you need to do to get the words you want to show up on your map. So you’ve taken stock of where you are but where do you want to go? One exercise that can help you shape your personal brand is creating a Personal Branding Statement. Jennifer uses the BRAND acronym to break down this exercise. B for bold, R for relevant, A for authentic, N for notable, and D for differentiated. Jennifer also talks about some notable personal branding statements she’s come across and why they stood out to her. Ready for some homework? Start thinking about your own personal brand statement. Jennifer suggests using Kary Oberbrunner’s formula to develop your statement. Fill in the blanks! I am (your professional identity) who helps (your audience) do or understand (your unique solution) so that (transformation/benefit). Share your personal brand statement with us! What are your qualities that people are most attracted to? What makes you intrinsically you? Sally Hogshead, author of Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resist, was in a car accident as a girl. The resulting damage to her face left her feeling that her "smile had turned into a grimace." As an extrovert who connected through her smile, this left her insecure and unsure how to connect with others. Sally has come a long way in the 30 years since the accident, but it's still at the heart of the work she does: "Its a gift to get to share with other people what their best gifts are so that no one feels insecure." Sally shares her expertise with major brands and teams like Nike, Ikea and Target. Today, she shares with us so we can identify our best qualities (and those of our business) so we can better connect with others and live inspired. SHOW NOTES Aspire to be the best YOU; not compared to others. When you put time into your natural gifts (v. spending time improving weaknesses), you make extraordinary leaps. You don't have to be perfect at everything, but know that you are extraordinary at something. We're taught it's good to be the smart or funny one, but theres not a one-size fits all. There are lots of way to succeed. High performers identify and focus on delivering in their strength and turn it into a specialty. Brilliance comes in many forms. When we don't know ourselves at our best, we aren't able to reach our full potential. You'll never succeed by being quiet or playing small. Check out Sally's blog post about her dad here. Most of us don't talk about the bad stuff. But its healthy to realize that scars aren't the end of it; are often the best of it. Tool to overcome a challenging time: Ask yourself "Why is this the best thing could happen?" Ex: If your child doesn't make the play - "Now thers more time to pursue a different passion and your can always prep more next time." Being in a job/relationship/scenario you don't like isn't your fault, but you have to work to find options to change it. You can't plan out the whole thing. There is some risk in all success. The universe provides we don't know what the journey is while we're in the middle of it. It's so important to tell the people we love that we love them; tell them how significant they are. Take Sally's Fascination Assessment to find out how other people see you at your best + to become more of who you are. Use code: liveinspired Call out when people are at their best and then help them focus on doing more of that: Be themselves on purpose. It's easy to get to a place of self judgement if you don't have a bigger vision that is more important than the insecurity you see in the mirror. SALLY HOGSHEAD'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Jonathan Living Seagull, by Richard Bach. It made me feel that all things are possible 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do with it? I wouldn't quit working - it far transcends money for me. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? The printed marriage proposal from my husband framed in my bedroom. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? I like talking with you! 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? You don't have to change who you are, you just have to become more of who you are. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Floss more. Joy and passion and spontaneity are good, but so is thoughtfully planning for the future. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? The greatest difference that you can make is to become more of yourself. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe (automatically get new episodes), rate & review (help spread the word!) this podcast wherever you get your podcasts. “…to reach our fullest potential, we need to stop trying to change who we are and instead become more of who we are.” — Sally Hogshead We live in an age of the short attention span. If you want to stand out in the market, it’s essential to differentiate yourself and show how you add value to your clients and solve their problems. At the center of this is the question: How does the world see you and the strengths you offer? In this episode, Brian Buffini interviews Sally Hogshead, branding expert and pioneer of the groundbreaking Fascination Advantage® system. A master communicator, Sally has conducted extensive research into the most common personality traits and has discovered how people and well-known brands can use their strengths to provide value and set themselves apart from their competition. You’ll learn why people have trouble identifying the value they offer the world, the two ways to tell if you’re motivated and how to develop the language necessary to separate yourself from your competitors. Here is your private code to find out how the world sees you: Go to HowToFascinate.com/YOU For the access code, enter BUFFINI Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “In order for anyone to reach the absolute fullest potential, we need to stop trying to change who we are and instead we have to become more of who we are. The problem is that so many people professionally and personally water down their most distinctive traits.” — Sally Hogshead “When a brand waters down its most distinctive traits it becomes a commodity.” — Sally Hogshead “Every time we communicate, we’re doing one of two things—we’re either adding value or we’re taking up space.” — Sally Hogshead “When you add value, people want to work with you, they seek you out because you do something that’s distinct.” — Sally Hogshead “We want to make sure that we’re constantly adding value.” — Sally Hogshead “It’s impossible for us to see how the world sees us objectively. We don’t see us as the world sees us; we see us as we see us.” — Sally Hogshead “I help people see how they’re most primed to add value. Show them what makes them different.” — Sally Hogshead “Different is better than better.” — Sally Hogshead “If they can’t describe how you are at your best, they can’t refer you.” — Sally Hogshead “Our value is so natural to us that we don’t see it.” — Brian Buffini. “The more specific you can be, the more you can develop language.” — Sally Hogshead “What is the client’s problem for which you are the perfect solution? If you can identify why you are the perfect solution, you can quickly and succinctly identify why you are of the highest value.” — Sally Hogshead “I’m not a routine oriented person so I’ve surrounded myself with teams and systems to help. It reduces stress and allows me to do what I do best, which is to make connections.” — Sally Hogshead “What do you need so that you can contribute at your highest value? Protect it like any other asset. If you’re not able to be seen at your best, you can damage your brand.” — Sally Hogshead “Fascinate your customers so they don’t go to someone else in the market.” — Sally Hogshead “No compassion without pain.” — Brian Buffini Connect with Sally Hogshead and learn How to Fascinate: http://howtofascinate.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HowToFascinate/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/howtofascinate Buy the book: Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resisthttp://www.brandfascination.com/book Connect with Brian Buffini http://www.brianbuffini.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brianbuffini Twitter: https://twitter.com/brianbuffini Buffini Show Insiders: http://www.thebrianbuffinishow.com/insiders Love what you heard?
