TranscriptBefore we dive into the three shortcuts to discovering your brand, I need to address the #1 marketing mistake most make and the difference between branding and marketing. Drum roll, please…the most common marketing mistake according to research is an inconsistent message that creates cognitive dissonance. Have you ever watched a commercial and you’re like, What the heck was that?! I don’t even know what they’re saying let alone selling! You’re left irritated and confused. In fact, you probably can’t even remember the name of the business because of the immediate confusion. That’s cognitive dissonance. Being cute, clever, and edgy means nothing if people don’t know what you’re saying. Your message needs to be so clear that a two-year-old gets it. Well, maybe not that extreme but pretty darn close. The Difference Between Branding and MarketingNow, let’s look at your branding and marketing. First, you need to develop your brand before you even begin marketing. Very simply, your brand is the personality of your business. It’s who you are as a person—core values, personality, and aspirations—that translates over into your business. Your identity is your business’s identity. For example, your personality will be drawn to certain colors, textures, and even fonts. Some like muted, earthy colors. Others love all the primary colors. More than likely that has translated over into your website. But your brand is more than colors and fonts It’s the feel and the experience people have when with you. That experience and feeling draws in your tribe. Note: Be careful though. Your website colors need to inspire the action you want people to take. If you want them to stay for a while, you need to use muted colors that are peaceful. If you want them to take action, you need bold colors like yellow, red, and orange. But don’t make your site so boring, people fall asleep and don’t make so colorful that they feel they’re trapped in a crayon box. Marketing is the vehicle to get your brand and its message out to your tribe, your target market. Your marketing whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, radio or TV needs to ooze your brand. People need to get a taste of your brand that leaves them wanting more. Three Shortcuts to Discovering Your BrandOkay, so two of these are free and one is $45 but totally worth it. After your finish this blog, click the announcement bar at the top and take my brand personality quiz. It takes about five minutes, and you’ll learn which of the 12 personalities you are, your goals, philosophy, fears, and what your followers expect from you, which you can use as a filter for all of your content not just marketing content. Next, go to howyoufascinate.com and take Sally Hogshead’s Fascination Advantage assessment. What I love about this assessment is that it shows how your potential clients see you. For example, I’m a Power and Trust combo meaning that I’m the one that solves my clients problems with authority and expertise. I’m the one that shows up when no one knows what to do and says, “Let’s do this and this and that.” The trust factor means that my clients trust me quickly and know that I’m dependable, reliable, and comfy like a cozy blanket. It also tells me that my clients don’t want surprises. When I conduct business with my combo, I’m in my zone and best received by others. And, finally, go over to Pinterest where you’ll create a board of the colors, textures, and fonts you like that you’ll then use for your website, Instagram, Facebook, and all other content. Use the following guidelines:Keep it within 15-20 images (you might start with a lot more but narrow it down in the end)Try to pin about 5 pins that fit into these categories: colors, fonts, textures, patternsShoot for consistency. Entire board should be a cohesive visual representation of what you thing fits the look and feel of what you want your site to beBy the time you’re done, you should see an overall picture of what you’re drawn to that’s cohesive and has the feel you like. For example, my Pinterest board has a lot of black, white, yellow and teal. Yellow is happy. Teal is a touch of peace, which I love. And black and white is professional and classy. So I’m professional with a lot of joy. You’ll have fun with me. In SummaryDiscovering your brand personality is a lot of fun. I didn’t know how to do any of this when I started my business. It took me a lot longer to figure it out. I don’t want you to struggle like I did. Use these tools, and you’ll save a lot of time, headache, and confusion! For more information on this process, read “My Exact Branding Research Process.”

Oftentimes, when we dive into a new business or a new industry, we are bound to make some mistakes. These are common mistakes that most people do when they start their career, so why not learn from those who experienced them?In the mortgage world, the errors in judgment are frequent, since not many people actually dream of becoming a loan officer or a realtor, therefore, there aren’t many ways you can learn, other than through experience. On today’s episode, I talk to Jennifer, who after 30+ years of being in the mortgage industry, has gained valuable knowledge on how things work. Jen mentors people, now, because she believes nobody should spend half of their working life to learn on their own what can easily be taught by others.Jennifer Du Plessis is a keynote speaker, mentor, podcast host, and author. She began her long career in mortgage lending while in high school and continued to work through college. In the last 30+ years, she has been a delegated underwriter for the FHA, Veterans Administration, and both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. I have found that the best way to grow as an entrepreneur is in helping my own clients because it’s in the middle of working with my clients that I develop the systems that help me in my own business. Isn’t there some quote out there about a teacher always being a student and that makes a teacher great? To me that means that I’m a better business woman because of my clients. They force me to think outside the box, develop systems, and hone my craft. No matter the industry you work in, you need to build a personal brand. — Gary Vee Branding is just one example of this. When I first started my company, I had NO idea about branding or marketing. I seemed to have a natural inclination and picked up on concepts quickly but taking that information and creating one consistent and powerful brand and message was like trying to piece a puzzle together without the box until I accidentally found myself helping others do what I was trying to figure out! People Buy Benefits Not ProductsThe first major puzzle piece was the concept that people don’t buy products; they buy benefits. Benefits are the emotional aspects of a problem that you solve with your product. If you solve the internal emotional problem, you’ll be successful. People pay big bucks to entrepreneurs and businesses who solve their internal and external problems. How do you know what benefits your clients buy from you? You ask them. I decided that the first step with branding my clients was contacting 8-10 of their happiest clients and asking them what benefits they get from doing business with them. Here are the exact questions I use:What drew you to FILL IN THE BANK?What three benefits do you receive from doing business with me? How do you feel doing business with me?Anything you’d like to see added or changed? On question 2, I always explain that benefits are NOT the actual product or service but the emotions felt when you solve their problems. Sometimes you need to read between the lines. For example, I researched benefits for a local bank and kept hearing things like, “They know me by name, I can talk to anyone I need to, friendly, honest, and no hassle.” This was repeatedly stated in different ways. You’ll find a pattern of at least three core benefits when you do your client research. The benefits are translated as follows: They know me by name = significance I cant talk to anyone I need to = significanceFriendly = feel valuedHonest = trustNo hassle = relief that things aren’t complicatedOnce you have your benefits, you can take those words and emotions and incorporate them into all of your marketing. What Makes You IrresistibleSally Hogshead is a master marketer that has developed a unique assessment that shows you how others see you, which is interesting because most assessments show you, you. Sally measured over 700,000 people over a decade to develop the science of fascination and then used her research to build marketing systems for IBM, Twitter, the YMCA, Coca-Cola and thousands of small businesses. She discovered seven Fascination Advantages—innovation, passion, power, prestige, trust, mystique, and alert—that when tapped into give you super powers of persuasion and communication that is heard and remembered engaging more customers and increasing your sales. You also communicate more naturally and authentically building stronger rapport with your clients. Let me translate this into building your brand by giving you a recent example (I’m writing about this couple as a case study in a later blog). Meet Greg and Lorelei, two people I absolutely love! Greg contacted me about three weeks ago after he took my brand personality quiz and learned he was a magician—inspirational, motivational, passionate, and charismatic—to discuss Facebook ads.I showed up at his gym (he specializes in Russian KB training) and noticed the huge inspirational sayings spread out over two walls that fit him perfectly. But I also immediately noticed the cinder block wall was Facebook blue. Hmmm…I thought. That doesn’t fit a magician. We had an amazing first visit with the agreement to get together the next week to discuss the plan. I went home and immediately looked at his website. At first, I thought maybe I’d gone to the wrong website. It was black and white. No color except on a few pictures. A cracked concrete background. Again, this doesn’t fit a magician. Where’s the life, the color, the inspiration, the “YOU CAN DO IT!” vibe? At this point I’m doubting myself thinking I must have missed something. We met the next week. I shared my thoughts and let him know that I must have missed something because what I’m seeing on his site and even his wall isn’t fitting. I suggested he take the Fascination Advantage assessment at howyoufascinate.com and let’s get together again to discuss the results. He agreed. We got together the next week, and sure enough he was exactly what I thought. Passion + Innovation = Catalyst. Sight, sounds, textures, color—all the things that make him a magician were missing in his brand causing a cognitive dissidence meaning his personality didn’t match his “brand” and people would be confused like I was. Or scared! I told him that I consider myself an intermediate weight lifter, can leg press my father-in-law, and, yet, I’d be scared to call him! The way things were, he’d only attract first responders, military, and elite athletes not others that are maybe just beginning their fitness journeys. He painted the wall his favorite color, orange. I rebuilt his website to show his passion fascination advantage and his magician brand personality while still maintaining the high degree of excellence he requires. We’d never have known any of this if it wasn’t for the assessments he took. And, of course, we’re working on his benefit research. But we had to get his website fixed ASAP because today that is a customer’s first impression. In SummaryBranding is who you are as a person. Your business is your “baby” and like any baby, it looks like you. Today, let’s talk about how fascinating you are. But first, let’s break down what exactly “fascinating” means. It goes back Roman times, when that word meant things like captivation and spellbinding. It was almost perceived as an evil curse back then. Now, fascination is more about how the world sees you. In other words, it’s about knowing yourself – and more importantly, it’s about knowing what others know about you and how you can stand out in a crowded market place, which couldn’t be more important today. We’ve got to focus on what makes us different. As our guest Sally Hogshead would say, different is better than better. Sally is a world-class branding expert who has discovered a new way to measure how people perceive you, and in this episode, she’s going to share how you can start leveraging your Fascination Advantage and standing out from the competition. Today's guest on the BRAND New Your Show is Sean Scoffield. Sean reached out to me on LinkedIn after listening to a few of my older podcasts. We exchanged a few messages and shared a couple of files when I realized he had a unique take on the power of personality assessments such as StrengthsFinder, Stand Out, and the Fascination Advantage. Specifically, he has developed a method to pull together the results from all of the assessments into one comprehensive document that as he says creates a “tapestry” of your brand.
Everytime you communicate, you are either adding value or taking up space. In a distracted, competitive and commoditized world, your personality tagline is crucial to standing out. In this excerpt, Sally explains how your communication should be based on what you discover about your own highest value, and how to use that to improve your first impressions. One of the most common questions I hear from listeners is how do you express your personal brand. In this interview, Robyn Sayles shares incredible insights that you can implement right away. If you get stuck knowing what to say when people ask-“so tell me what you do” or how to attract attendees to come into your exhibit or are unsure what you need to do at a networking event, then this episode is for you! Robyn is a personal branding expert and Fascinate certified trainer. She shares key strategies we can all use to attract, connect and engage with people and why it is important to be authentically you at all the time. 5 Key Insights You Will Learn: Why it is important to know how you communicate-hint you should take the free fascination assessment test How to differentiate from your colleagues with these 3 tips to be more effective on the trade show floor. 3 Ways to engage with attendees to have better conversations. How to express your personal brand in 9 seconds or less. 4 Result driven strategies to help you make the best connections. Robyn was inspired by Sally Hogshead who developed a scientific method called the Fascination Advantage to communicate personal branding in her book How the world sees you. Robyn shares how Hogshead discovered why we become irrationally obsessed with certain brands and an algorithm was developed to accurately determine how each person communicates. Robyn shares a personal story about how a friend took the fascination test and thought it was incorrect. She describes how we have preconceived notions of what words represent like Power-and why it might be a barrier if we don’t understand the true meaning. Once you understand your communication style, you can translate it to be more effective on the trade show floor. Here are some ways you can draw people to want to talk with you. How to Engage Attendees on the Trade Show Floor: Differentiate your approach: Don’t try to communicate the same way a colleague is doing it. Everyone needs to be distinctive and unique. For example if you are the creative one-you should take a creative approach when people come to your booth. We all sell-people are coming to the show to learn about new products at the show. Replace the word sell with the world help-communicate how you are helpful. People walking the show floor want to learn something-don’t be afraid to ask an engaging question In a world where communication is lightning fast you really only have less than 9 seconds to tell someone what you do and so once you have someone to talk with you, your message has to be concise. Your Personal Brand: Answer These 3 Things to Tell People What You Do Who are you? Describe what it is you do-for example Robyn says “I help people be fascinating”. Describe how you add value: What makes the way you approach a situation, challenge and solution unique. Demonstrate how you are different: Stay true to your personality if you are not wild and wacky, don’t try to portray yourself as that personality. Being authentic is one way you can really stand out. Power Tip: Practice your personal brand statement in your car or in front of a mirror. The words need to flow effortlessly. Remember that in order to be short and concise you need to keep it simple, focused and explain your advantage. Look at examples of people who tell a story in a really short amount of time. Movie trailers and Twitter are good places to get inspired to know what you want to say. Now that you know what to say, you need to know how to use it effectively. Sometimes it isn’t always easy to know where to where to start. Here are 4 tactics you can implement at your next event. 4 Result Driven Networking Strategies to Use at Your Next Event: Set a goal: For example “I need to meet these type of people.” Make the goal quantifiable: “I need to meet 5 people in this field today.” Determine your Ideal Customer Avatar: Who do you want to engage with at the event? Ask for help: There are people at networking events who like to make connections. This is what I do and I would love to talk with other people in the field. Power Tip: Look for registration desk-ask them for help introducing you to people you want to meet. Remember, that regardless of where you are-your personal brand should be consistent in all areas of your life. The more your personal brand is the same everywhere you are-the more successful you will be. If you are authentic, it will translate into making people want to hear what you have to say. Feeling like you need some help? Robyn shares her favorite book: What to do when it’s your turn-it’s always your turn by Seth Godin. This book helps you get in touch with your why and take action. The BRAND New You Show - A Personal Branding and Digital Branding podcast
Welcome to Discover month here on the brand new you show. This month I'm talking a deep dive look into how you can become more self-aware during the Discover step of DICE. So to help I'm covering in detail the three assessments I have taken in order to help me become more self-aware and this week, I'm going to talk about one of my favorites. The one I recommend everyone take. To say that the Fascination Advantage® assessment is unique would be an understatement. Asn an example, The SF assessment we discussed last week , is designed to help you look inside yourself and describe for you how you see the world. The Fascination Advantage® assessment, however, flips this traditional approach on its head by giving you insights on how the world sees you. “…to reach our fullest potential, we need to stop trying to change who we are and instead become more of who we are.” — Sally Hogshead We live in an age of the short attention span. If you want to stand out in the market, it’s essential to differentiate yourself and show how you add value to your clients and solve their problems. At the center of this is the question: How does the world see you and the strengths you offer? In this episode, Brian Buffini interviews Sally Hogshead, branding expert and pioneer of the groundbreaking Fascination Advantage® system. A master communicator, Sally has conducted extensive research into the most common personality traits and has discovered how people and well-known brands can use their strengths to provide value and set themselves apart from their competition. You’ll learn why people have trouble identifying the value they offer the world, the two ways to tell if you’re motivated and how to develop the language necessary to separate yourself from your competitors. Here is your private code to find out how the world sees you: Go to HowToFascinate.com/YOU For the access code, enter BUFFINI Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “In order for anyone to reach the absolute fullest potential, we need to stop trying to change who we are and instead we have to become more of who we are. The problem is that so many people professionally and personally water down their most distinctive traits.” — Sally Hogshead “When a brand waters down its most distinctive traits it becomes a commodity.” — Sally Hogshead “Every time we communicate, we’re doing one of two things—we’re either adding value or we’re taking up space.” — Sally Hogshead “When you add value, people want to work with you, they seek you out because you do something that’s distinct.” — Sally Hogshead “We want to make sure that we’re constantly adding value.” — Sally Hogshead “It’s impossible for us to see how the world sees us objectively. We don’t see us as the world sees us; we see us as we see us.” — Sally Hogshead “I help people see how they’re most primed to add value. Show them what makes them different.” — Sally Hogshead “Different is better than better.” — Sally Hogshead “If they can’t describe how you are at your best, they can’t refer you.” — Sally Hogshead “Our value is so natural to us that we don’t see it.” — Brian Buffini. “The more specific you can be, the more you can develop language.” — Sally Hogshead “What is the client’s problem for which you are the perfect solution? If you can identify why you are the perfect solution, you can quickly and succinctly identify why you are of the highest value.” — Sally Hogshead “I’m not a routine oriented person so I’ve surrounded myself with teams and systems to help. It reduces stress and allows me to do what I do best, which is to make connections.” — Sally Hogshead “What do you need so that you can contribute at your highest value? Protect it like any other asset. If you’re not able to be seen at your best, you can damage your brand.” — Sally Hogshead “Fascinate your customers so they don’t go to someone else in the market.” — Sally Hogshead “No compassion without pain.” — Brian Buffini Connect with Sally Hogshead and learn How to Fascinate: http://howtofascinate.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HowToFascinate/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/howtofascinate Buy the book: Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resisthttp://www.brandfascination.com/book Connect with Brian Buffini http://www.brianbuffini.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brianbuffini Twitter: https://twitter.com/brianbuffini Buffini Show Insiders: http://www.thebrianbuffinishow.com/insiders Love what you heard? For anyone in a distracted and competitive environment, the real issue is not how you see the world. The real question is… how does the world see you? My dear friend Sally Hogshead is our guest on today’s episode, and Sally created the Fascination Advantage®, the first personality assessment that measures how others perceive you! After researching over 600,000 people, her algorithm can pinpoint your most valuable differentiating traits. Unlike Myers-Briggs or StrengthsFinder, this test doesn't measure how you see the world – but How the World Sees You. Her recent book, HOW THE WORLD SEES YOU, was a #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller! Working with companies such as Nike, Aflac, Godiva, Jägermeister, Avon, and the Wall Street Journal, Sally creates and leads global marketing campaigns, and also teaches companies how to use their brand personality to fascinate in social media and customer experience. Today, Sally teaches us how to instantly persuade and captivate in a world with a 9 second attention span, using your own unique competitive advantages – including how to captivate customers and close the sale. As the only speaker and author on the topic of fascination, Sally has developed a scientifically-based system of influence, based on the brain's hardwired patterns. This is for any goal that requires powerful communication— from selling insurance to motivating employees. Take a listen and give us a review if you like what you hear!
