Summary “Getting Unstuck” is somewhat of a rare animal in the world of podcasting. It's offered timely content focused on change, education, and curiosity for over 5 years and sits in the top 3% of all podcasts. 44% of all podcasts have less than 3 episodes, according to two tracking sources. Most podcasts don't make it past 10 episodes. Conversely, we just passed the 300-episode milestone, which is somewhat of a magic marker for podcasts. As we approach the end of the year, I wanted to take a moment to thank my listeners and recap 2023 in three parts: 1. the top episodes in terms of downloads, 2. the episode that meant the most to me, and 3 my most popular episode over the life of the podcast. The episodes in 2023 that garnered the most listener attention What follows are the top downloaded episodes for 2023. Not surprisingly, each of the five episodes focused on the major themes I emphasize in the podcast: overcoming personal resistance, recognizing and taking advantage of serendipity, defining a new purpose of education, experiencing the meditative aspect of fly fishing and the natural world, and the power of curiosity. Here, then, is a short description of these five episodes: 250 - How a Life-Altering Event Can Still Mean A Rich Life, Fulfilling Life Rick Locke is an excellent example of someone who literally had to look at life from a different angle. While he was losing his central vision due to macular degeneration, he could still see out of the corner of his eye. And that, as it turns out, was the lens through which he could see – and share – a whole new world of wonder. 249 - How to Become All-in as a Solopreneur April Vokey couldn't help but look at life from a different angle. From a very early age, April loved fishing and hunting. She decided to shun more traditional work and instead start a business where she would guide, provide instructional courses, write, be a keynote speaker, and host a podcast on all things related to her fishing interests, all while becoming a wife and mother. Her decision also came with the expected challenges — and one challenge that men doing the same work never face. 239 - What is the Purpose of School? In this episode, educator, author, and futurist Rhonda Broussard and I touch on various reasons for our K-12 system of schooling. Is it to prepare students for a career, acquire knowledge and skills, or develop creative thinking and problem-solving abilities? And what about student agency? How much voice and choice should we allow students to determine what and how they want to learn? 246 - Dr. Christian Busch on Connecting Life's Dots Going Forward Steve Jobs famously said, “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.” Today's guest, Christian Busch, Ph.D., would respectfully disagree. He writes, “Serendipity is not just about a coincidence that happens to us, but it is actually through the process of spotting and connecting the dots that we start to see bridges where others see gaps.” 253 - How Can You Reframe Your Inner Story to Create a Healthier Reality? Valerie Gordon is a 10-time Emmy-winning television producer with over 20 years of developing and overseeing award-winning content. She knows what makes a story meaningful and memorable and the incredible power of stories to engage, educate, and entertain. And she's detailed how we can tell a healthier personal story – and overcome our inner narrator – in her highly readable book, FIRE YOUR NARRATOR: A Storyteller's Guide to Getting Out of Your Head and Into Your Life. The 2023 episode that meant the most to me This episode grew from my experience traveling to Berlin and Amsterdam this past fall to immerse myself in local aspects of the Holocaust. Here, I traveled to Wannsee, Germany, a suburb of Berlin, where on January 20, 1942, 15 high-ranking Nazis gathered in a villa to resolve various aspects of the “final solution of the Jewish problem.” As a Jew, standing in the room where the Nazis met was a chilling experience in its own right, but it was made more so because Adolf Eichmann had been one of the Nazis attending. 268 - Getting the Best Revenge Standing Inside the Room My most popular episode over the 5-year life of the podcast And finally, I wanted to acknowledge that episode 201 - “Learning About Life and Leadership from a Fly Fishing Guide,” remains the runaway listener favorite over the podcast's life. Initially, I was nervous about posting an episode about fly fishing, but my conversation with guide Spencer Seim was anything but what one might expect. It wasn't about the technical aspects of fly fishing; it was about how Spencer approaches his clients every day as a leader. So, I think the focus on leadership played well, but that said, I've done a number of episodes since related to fly fishing, including #2 in this year's top 5, and they were all well received. Who knew? 201 - Learning About Life and Leadership from a Fly Fishing Guide

He is the author of the New York Times bestseller "Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life" and "Stop Doing That Sh*t: End Self Sabotage and Demand Your Life Back". In this episode, Larry Hagner and Gary John Bishop reunite for the fifth time to catch up on each other's lives, including Gary's recent trip to Germany with his sons who are pursuing their dreams of becoming professional soccer players. They also discuss the upcoming data summit and how their experiences tie into the book they are working on. One of the key themes explored in the podcast is the importance of understanding family dynamics. Larry Hagner and Gary John Bishop discuss how studying oneself and reflecting on their own upbringing is crucial for personal growth and effective parenting. Gary John Bishop uses the metaphor of "biting your own teeth" to illustrate the difficulty of self-reflection. It is impossible to physically bite your own teeth, just as it can be challenging to objectively observe and analyze oneself. However, Gary John Bishop emphasizes that this introspection is necessary in order to gain a deeper understanding of one's own parenting style and the impact it has on their children. Gary also shares their own realization from the book, highlighting the tendency to either repeat or reject aspects of their own childhood. He admit that he had not previously viewed his parents as individuals with their own experiences and challenges. Gary's book helped the host recognize the importance of understanding their parents' stories and how they influenced their own upbringing. www.thedadedge.com/friday132 www.thedadedge.com/alliance www.garyjohnbishop.com

Anything you are trying to get rid of, from anxiety and depression to fear and loss. So what if the key to overcoming your anxiety was to welcome your anxiety in with arms wide open? You might think to yourself, “I'm willing to do that if embracing anxiety will eventually help me get rid of it!” But if that is why you're doing it, you will continue to be anxious. Dr. Steven C. Hayes is the originator of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), identified as part of the “third wave of cognitive behavioral therapy.” He's a Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada, the author of 47 books, including Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life and A Liberated Mind. Ranked in the top 1,000 most cited scholars in the world, Steven has been referred to as “one of the greatest thinkers, psychological theorists, and clinicians alive.” With close to 1,000 clinical trials showing its efficacy, ACT synthesizes many approaches, including Western psychology and Eastern philosophy. My interest started when reading Russ Harris' The Happiness Trap, and finding an approach that mirrored my personal journey. Building upon cognitive therapy, ACT includes awareness, mindfulness, the “observer,” and other Buddhist-like techniques. Factor in its emphasis on living a life aligned with values, and you have a system designed to lead to greater fulfillment. What I most admire about Steven's work is the practicality of his research, or in his words, “digging down to the processes that empower or entrap” and trying to find the skill sets that are most effective. Our conversation looks at those processes, but also expands to the wider philosophy of the mental health paradigm. What are the issues with how we treat mental illness? And what does an empowered, spiritually-inclusive model look like? A little over 40 years ago, Dr. Steven Hayes experienced his first panic attack—when he was a young assistant professor in psychology, no less! In the intervening years, and drawing in part on his own recovery from panic disorder, he developed Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and produced a huge body of work that has revolutionized our understanding of human language and cognition. Today, he is one of the most highly-cited scholars in the world, across all disciplines of study. And, he remains a soulful and wise clinician, who generously shared some of his insights about addiction for this episode of the Flourishing After Addiction podcast.Steve and I talk about “psychological flexibility:” a revolutionary pivot toward working with our thoughts and feelings, rather than trying to fight or change them. One definition of psychological flexibility is to be open, grounded, and committed to values-based action. We discuss making sense of addiction in his framework, and he speaks out against the biomedicalization and over-categorization of the phenomenon. He talks about the centrality of values and why it's necessary to find a life worth living as part of recovery. We discuss Steve's understanding of spirituality and transcending a limited self-concept, and how that fits into his work. And—something I'm so happy Steve prompted me to do—he leads us all through a guided exercise to take perspective and to get a taste of dropping the small self.  I'm really happy that he's given us this practice experience. Find a quiet place and give it a try (it's only about 8 minutes or so, toward the end of the interview). Steven C. Hayes is a Nevada Foundation Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada. An author of 46 books and nearly 650 scientific articles, he is especially known for his work on "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" or “ACT”, which is one of the most widely used and researched new methods of psychological intervention over the last 20 years. His popular book Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life for a time was the best-selling self-help book in the United States, and his more recent book A Liberated Mind was released to wide acclaim. We're back talking a bit more about Emotional Intelligence and what agents today can expect from a cooling market and how that can affect our professional outlook. It's no secret that the market we've been seeing has been bananas and even if it moves back to a more normal equilibrium that has more basis in history, it's going to seem like a huge slowdown to most agents who don't know any different. That's not a bad thing! It's just that success isn't going to be the low hanging fruit that it's been for the past few years, and it's going to take a bit more work to get there. But what we want to stress and what we here at OTB still believe with our whole hearts, opportunity is still there, and Real Estate is still the best way to build wealth and create legacy. You just have to put the work in.   In a cooling market like this, knowing who you are and what is happening around you will be key. It's about getting the best information you can to keep yourself well informed and being ready to implement those outside the box ideas when those opportunities present themselves. We have a list of our all-time favorite books, but like we say in the episode, don't just make them a goal to get through, but really internalize the information that they have. It's about being as well informed as you can be to be the best you can be for yourself and your clients that can bring you the success you're looking for.   Steve's and Bernie's Book List (In order of mentions): The Road Less Stupid by Keith J. We are very excited to welcome today's guest, Valerie Gordon, who is an award-winning television producer, content creator and longtime storyteller. Through her career and communications strategy firm Commander-in-She, Valerie offers keynote presentations, group workshops and personal and corporate strategizing to help clients harness the power of story.   A 10-time Emmy and 3-time Edward R. Murrow award winner, Valerie's television work has appeared on HBO Sports, CBS News, ESPN, Weekend Today and Lifetime.  Through Commander-in-She, Valerie combines her storytelling background with her passion for advocating for women in the workforce. She provides high-achieving women with the career tools and communication skills necessary to ascend the leadership ladder and works with corporations to develop and retain future talent.   Her recent book, “Fire Your Narrator! A Storyteller's Guide to Getting Out of Your Head and Into Your Life” explores the impact and influence of the stories we tell ourselves on our career success and satisfaction.  In today's conversation we discuss: Valerie's story about how she left her once satisfying career as a producer after she found herself crying to her dog on the floor of her closet.   How Valerie started asking herself what she didn't want anymore so she could figure out what she did want.  The “red flag” words from our inner narrator that hold us back from achieving what we desire. How to get out of your head, squash your inner narrator, turn down the volume of the gremlin voice and become the author of your own narrative. How to name our inner narrator, that voice that is telling you that your not good or worth enough. How to flick the inner narrator off your shoulder and tell it where to go. We also discuss Valerie's new book: "Fire Your Narrator! A Storyteller's Guide to Getting Out of Your Head and Into Your Life".    Valerie's book is funny, real and vulnerable with lots of stories that you can relate to; we highly recommend reading it. As you listen to today's conversation we invite you to think about the stories in your head, and ask yourself how are they serving you now?  What do you want your story to be?  And what are you going to name that inner narrator so that you can tell it where to go the next time he/she shows up. We cover the following (and more!): Sumer's relationship with her body (something she hasn't shared much about in the past)What shifted things for her (Hint: It had nothing to do with therapy or treatment)What does it mean to clarify your values and why should you care about it? How might it help with feeling more in control of your eating? Do it! It's a foundational concept of both of our programs for a reason and consistently everyone's favorite Module in The Body Respect Program.Values are key for long-term motivation. To develop autonomous motivation, the type that sticks for the long-haul, doing this work is essential. If your comfortable, you may not be doing it right. Values clarification is inherently uncomfortable. We are never living 100% with our values and looking at the gaps (where you aren't living life exactly how you'd like to be) is sometimes really hard, but it's essential. And when you do it without judging or shaming yourself, it really isn't all that bad.Ask yourself "How do I want to show up in my life?" “Acceptance is the full embrace of our personal experience…it's choosing to feel with openness and curiosity, so that you can live the kind of life you want to live while inviting your feelings to come along for the ride” - Stephen Hayes  This podcast is about the power of dealing with negative thoughts and emotions more obliquely. It's about a central shift from focusing on what you think and feel to how you relate to what you think and feel. Its effectiveness is somewhat paradoxical because struggling to stop or change a thought or emotion can have the opposite effect - and compound the problem.  My guest is Dr. Steven Hayes. Dr. Hayes is a Nevada foundation professor of psychology in the behavior analysis program at the University of Nevada. He's an author of 46 books in nearly 675 scientific articles. His TEDx talks and blogs have been viewed or read by over 3 million people he has ranked among the most cited psychologists in the world. He's especially known for his work on acceptance and commitment therapy or ACT, which is one of the most widely used and researched new methods of psychological intervention over the last 20 years. Steven has received the lifetime achievement award from the association for behavioral and cognitive therapy and his popular book, Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life: was #1 bestseller, and his new book, which is also discussed on the podcast. A Liberated Mind: How to Pivot Toward What Matters has been recently released to white acclaim. Some of the topics we cover. Current depression rates and the impact of the pandemic   What he thinks is exasperating depression and anxiety in the U.S.  The differences between sadness and depression How our brains and emotions can often work against us How automatic and complicated our thinking processes are ACT and process-based therapy, and the challenge of a purely cognitive model What is relational thinking The problem with treating negative thoughts as problems  How we can relate to our thoughts to create space from being caught up in them  What is diffusion and techniques to apply it  For show notes and more, visit www.larryweeks.com
