This week we're tying up some loose ends by discussing Bird Machine, the presumed final album by Sparklehorse. Shortly before his death in 2010, Mark Linkous recorded the foundation for these tracks with Steve Albini. Since then, Matt and Melissa Linkous took the tracks and completed them, giving them a proper release. While Mike and Alex generally weren't huge fans of Sparklehorse's records, no one can deny how moving this album is. On a parlé :

He is also a musician under the name Kash Mojo. In this episode, we go on a journey to find out why Evan decided to become a lawyer, and why he chose to practice in New Mexico. Along the way, we discuss journalism, his stint working for NPR (National Public Radio), and some of his law influences. Then we get into his musical side. I ask him why he chose the stage name of Kash Mojo, and what it means. Then we chat about his musical style and dub it "Ghost Rock"; which is a genre we both just made up! We talk about his musical influences, including Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous, and Evan even lets me play his new cover of 'Cow' by Sparklehorse. Look for Kash Mojo's new album 'Buried or Replaced' to drop midway through 2024. Finally, we end the show talking about how he got into listening to podcasts, and what some of his favorites are. Special shout out to Vincent from Gone Cold Podcast for connecting me with Evan. Thanks Vincent, I appreciate you, buddy.

Sparklehorse - "Evening Star Supercharger” from the 2023 album Bird Machine on ANTI- Today's Song of the Day is a bittersweet one: the track comes from the posthumous Sparklehorse album Bird Machine, recorded by singer/songwriter Mark Linkous in 2009, but unreleased following his death by suicide in 2010.  The release was lovingly spearheaded by Mark's brother and his sister-in-law Melissa. “It's the hardest decision I've ever made,” Matt says in a press release. “It's difficult making a choice about someone else's art, even if you've known them all your life and worked with them, even if they were your brother and best friend. We had long conversations about not wanting to take this into a different direction. We wanted to bring out what was there.” “Mark communicated these songs," Melissa adds. “We just did our best to transmit them.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From the mind of one auteur to another - this week things get a little darker and introspective as we discuss It's a Wonderful Life, the third album by Sparklehorse. The career trajectory of Sparklehorse is an interesting, if ultimately tragic one. Moving from lo-fi, one man band recordings to working with multiple indie music legends, as slowly as Mark Linkous' career evolved, it did seem as though he was an artist that was genuinely passionate about seeing how many different ways he could make music. Towards the end of his career, he also seemed very interested in making music with more people. Indeed, the last album by Sparklehorse, The Dark Night of the Soul, is not only a collaboration with Danger Mouse but every single song is a collaboration with different singer. It is about as far removed as you can get from the early days of playing every instrument on every song. Chris had a real hard time picking a Sparklehorse album because he felt that there's not much between the first three albums. Nevertheless, he landed on this and we use this episode as a vessel to explore not just the band's entire catalogue, but to talk about Mark Linkous' life and death. So, for those unaware of Sparkhorse, here's your trigger warning: we discuss suicide in this episode. Is this an unsung classic? Is this even their best album? Have a listen and find out…

Austrian guitarist, composer, and electronic musician Christian Fennesz is recognized as a key figure and one of the most distinctive voices of electronic music today. His wide international reputation has been consolidated through his substantial overall contribution to new musical expression. At the beginning of the 1990s, Fennesz became involved with the Viennese techno scene. Though formally educated in guitar and ethnomusicology from an early age, Fennesz decided to pursue composing and developing his own sound world in the distinctive electronic idiom. By plugging his guitar into his laptop and transforming and processing it, he managed to create a specific sound that is difficult to mistake for another's. On his first full-length solo release, Hotel Paral.lel (1997, Editions Mego), he introduced a mix of raw textures and twisted guitar sounds. The album was awarded the Prix Ars Electronica. Two years later, plus forty seven degrees 56‘ 37” minus sixteen degrees 51‘ 08” was released by Touch. His milestone third album Endless Summer (2001, Editions Mego) was acknowledged as one of the most important releases of the decade, helping to change the perception of electronic music today. On it, he gave significant importance to melody, appearing delicately beneath (or on the top) of his shimmering electronic soundscape-often described as “symphonic” for its enormous range and complex musicality. In 2004, Fennesz released Venice, in which he combined ambience-rich sound textures with pop-song elements. Black Sea (2008) has proven to be a bold step in experimentation with longer tracks that outline and construct sonic space without necessarily filling it with musical narrative or a predefined concept. His 2014 studio album Bécs was followed by his 2019 album for Touch, Agora.Within the last 10 years, Fennesz has collaborated with many musicians, filmmakers, and dancers. These encounters of diverse art forms have resulted in numerous stage performances and several exceptional studio releases. He has recorded and performed with Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, Keith Rowe, Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, Mike Patton, and many others. Fennesz has also worked alongside Peter Rehberg and Jim O'Rourke as the improvisational trio Fenn O'Berg.

Producer and songwriter Josh Carter of the band Phantogram stops by to discuss It's A Wonderful Life (2001) by multi-instrumentalist Mark Linkous who recorded as Sparklehorse. We paired the album with a bottle of 2017 Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes by Daniel Bouland, a real superstar in the production of Beaujolais. Carter discusses the delicacy in Sparklehorse's music, recalling how he was inspired by Mark Linkous while growing up in rural upstate New York. He has always looked at the singular imperfections in Sparklehorse's music as its greatest asset. Kyle Meyer thinks Daniel Bouland is a wine genius.

With his work as Sparklehorse, Mark Linkous left behind a collection of music wholly unique - masterfully combining the intimacy of his home recording setup paired with his singular lyrical approach. His songs shift from abrasive guitar driven "Pig" and "Ghost Of His Smile" to the laid back pop of "Sick Of Goodbyes" with little interruption, managing to find common ground in melody with such contemporary artists as Grandaddy, The Jayhawks and Guided By Voices. Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and frontwoman of LA outfit Tashaki Miyaki, Paige Stark, joins me to delve into fragile and beautiful world of the late Mark Linkous and his band Sparklehorse's classic ‘It's A Wonderful Life'. We talk about animal imagery, the prevalence of mental illness amongst musicians, the appeal of beautiful sounds that have been fucked up, Paige's encounter with Mark Linkous before his death, Linkous's collaborators on the album from Tom Waits to Dave Fridmann and why the record's reputation for being sad is undeserved. My Favorite Album is a podcast on the impact great music has on our lives. Each episode features a guest on their favorite album of all time - why they love it, their history with the album and how it's influenced them. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist, concert promoter and photographer. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins. Julien "Jules" Koetsch joins John Holt, and Mary Varn to discuss the next two picks from our "Cult/Fringe" theme.  ___________ Segment 1: "Dark Night of the Soul" by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, w/David Lynch (2010 album) John (@lordjoho) brings us an album from the late Mark Linkous, AKA Sparklehorse, in collaboration with DangerMouse and featuring David Lynch.  The Album had a rocky release, with a series of legal entanglements and the apparent suicide of Sparklehorse, it seemed that the project would stay unofficially released.  Thankfully the album found release and you can now find it digitally on iTunes, Rdio, Spotify.  As well as in hardcopy. _________________ Segment 2: "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace" (2004 television show) Keith Vincent (earthlingkeith.com) wasn't able to join us for the record, but he did offer us a great pick for the "Cult/Fringe" theme.  This British comedy series from 2004 is a fake bad 80's tv show by a fake bad horror novelist, with fake commentary from the fake novelist and the fake producer.  Left to Right- Matt Berry, Richard Ayoade, Matt Holness, Alice Lowe. Currently the DVD isn't for sale in a US Region. It aired briefly on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. You can purchase a Region 2 version online, but you can't play that in most DVD players. ______________________ You can follow us on twitter @newtoyoushow and you can leave comments down below! Join us next week for picks from a new theme "Better than the Original."

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

Well this podcast has been recorded from my sick bed, given my current immobility.  Actually, recording the Toadcast from bed was quite pleasant, once I got over the slightly unusual surroundings.  Imagine me in my pants and scratching my balls whilst talking to you and you'll pretty much have the ambience down pat.I sort of intended this to be a selection of poppy little tunes from my inbox, because all the last podcasts have been so heavily themed, but instead it's ended up a little bit on the experimental side, through no real intent of my own.  Nevertheless, if you're happy to listen to the growl of Polvo, the monologues of George Pringle and the peculiar electro-experimentalism of Mark Linkous and Fennesz all in one podcast then, fuck it, you're in the right place.
