Rachel Reeves' big speech on growth. We ask where was Scotland in the raft of major projects? Hard on the heels of this came the shock, not to anyone who'd been paying attention, news that the CEO of GB Energy, Juergen Maier, could not only give no date for the £300 reduction in consumer bills promised by Labour at the General Election but also that the one thousand Scottish jobs would take around 20 years to materialise. Sticking with Labour is there another U-turn on policy in the pipeline despite the Court of Session ruling by Lord Ericht putting a stop on oil and gas production in the Rosebank and Jackdaw fields? Will Starmer side with Rachel Reeves, the GMB and Scottish Labour, and give the go ahead to drill? Or will Ed Milliband stand up to those voices and refuse to issue new licences? We, in the light of listener Simon Brooke's excellent contribution, re-examine the validity of the claims made by the  industry on so called sustainable aviation fuel?Donald Trump has called time out on his plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico. What's the reality behind the bluster? What's in store for the UK and the EU?Lesley looks at the historical precedence for US expansionism and just why Trump might be so keen on taking over Greenland.Suella Braverman trotted off to the USA to display her MAGA credentials at Trump's inauguration. She hung around to go "full Trump" in her speech to the Heritage Foundation . Is she signalling a potential jump to Reform, or is this an ongoing  part of a campaign to oust Kemi Badenoch as Tory leader by shifting even further to the right? All of this within the context of Reform's rise in the polls.PlusLast in Iceland series that explains why Icelanders pay £60 pcm for heat, hot water & electricityhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXBEDk_o_hI&t=610sWhy does Trump want Greenland explainer videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYfSlQaIEXkBrave New Music book about Martyn Bennett https://luath.co.uk/products/brave-new-music?variant=54829697007992 ★ Support this podcast ★

It's welcome back to the podcast after our Christmas and New Year break. We kick off by reflecting on how we both spent Hogmanay in our different ways, Lesley's island sojourn sounds affy braw.Much criticism has been levelled at BBC Scotland in particular for its pallid Hogmanay programming and Lesley takes the opportunity to compare the "official" media offerings with the work of the late Martyn Bennett and the Grit Orchestra. Suffice to say the authorised ones don't stand the comparison well.....It seems now is the time for a complete rethink on BBC and STV Hogmanay fare.We also discuss the cancellation of the official Edinburgh celebrations. Is it time for the capital to have a complete rethink ?Martyn Bennett's music and Danny MacAskill's cycling on the Cuillin - 81 million views!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ_IQS3VKjAGrit Orchestra gig - just two seats left!!https://tickets.glasgowlife.org.uk/34209/34210Lesley talks about her new, self filmed, series of short videos she's filming on her travels around Scotland.Lesley also reflects on the recent funeral of 'John the Bird' Chester on Eigg.https://x.com/LesleyRiddoch/status/1876598275693859210Anas Sarwar in his most recent speech talked about reducing the number of quangos but was somewhat less than comprehensive in how he would do this and even less specific on what a Labour administration would cut other than reducing the number of Health Boards. However is there a kernel of truth in Sarwar's statement?  Has the growth of quangos led to the creation, as Robin McAlpine said, of " A feudal system of nested fiefdoms each insulated from the transparency and accountability nominally radiating from the one above"?We also discuss Sarwar's appearance on Good Morning Scotland where Laura Maxwell grilled him on his stances on the 2 Child Benefit Cap, Winter Fuel Allowance, and the WASPI women. We also discuss Neil Mackay's recent Herald article analysing the growth in support for Scottish independence as UK Labour tanks in the polls. Is the SNP in a fit state to profit from this? Is it radical enough to get independence over the line?Listener Leslie Wilson got in touch after our chat on swimmer Duncan Scott to highlight the  television coverage-lack of- of Bruce Mouat's champion curling rink. We discuss. ★ Support this podcast ★

After the defeat of the Royalist coalition, the last military resistance to the Commonwealth in Ireland are irregular Tories - isolated, cut off from the chain of command, thousands of veteran Irish fights live off the land, establish bases in bogs and hills, and hit the English occupation forces wherever they can. January 30, 1649 / 1661. London, 1649. King Charles I lays his head on a chopping block. The axe falls and, soon with it, the monarchy. What follows is Parliament's grueling effort to set up a functioning republic – one of the first in history. It will be led by Oliver Cromwell, a brilliant military leader who becomes the country's most powerful man. But on January 30, 1661 – exactly twelve years after the death of Charles I – royalist forces will use the same method to take their revenge: a beheading. Who was Oliver Cromwell, the man who led Britain's brief experiment in life without a king? And how did it all go wrong?Special thanks to our guests, Martyn Bennett, professor of early modern history at Nottingham Trent University and author of several books including Cromwell at War: The Lord General and His Military Revolution; and Peter Gaunt, professor of history at the University of Chester and author/editor of books including two Cromwell biographies, both entitled Oliver Cromwell. Kate Molleson visits Glyndebourne Festival Opera to hear about its new production of Ethel Smyth's ‘The Wreckers' – the first major staging of this tale of a hostile coastal community in many, many years, heard, as the composer intended, with its original French libretto. This new edition of the opera was researched and typeset by Martyn Bennett, Head of Music Library and Resources at Glyndebourne, using source material from the original score, with missing fragments orchestrated by Tom Poster, and additional help from the British Library. ‘Briefly: A Delicious Life' is a new novel by the writer Nell Stevens, a ghost story based around Fryderyk Chopin and his partner – the French novelist – George Sand, set in a monastery retreat in Mallorca. Kate meets the author to discover more about this tale of love, creativity and sexuality. The folk singer Angeline Morrison, writer and broadcaster Kevin Le Gendre and folk singer and academic Fay Hield all join Kate to discuss the overlooked black history in English folk music. And Tom Service meets conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, recovering from major surgery, still working, and in the UK recently to continue his long association with London Symphony Orchestra.

Taking us through his complex life and political career is Martyn Bennett, Professor at Nottingham Trent University, and author of the book Cromwell at War. With him, we take a look at what makes Cromwell so complicated: from his beliefs of religious freedom clashing with his actions in Ireland, to his desire for a democracy in spite of his absolute power over the country, and much more. At some point, some journalist somewhere decided that “celtic fusion” was a genre, and subsequently placed the music of Martyn Bennett in it. What does it mean? Well, your guess is as good as ours. We can safely say though that Bennett’s fifth and final album ‘Grit’ is definitely a genre fusion of sorts. We’ve dedicated a fair amount of time to discussing Scottish artists and albums on this podcast, but we’ve yet to touch on traditional Scottish music. Martyn Bennett is very much from a folk/trad background, but his approach is way more modern and genre bending than most artists. ‘Grit’ is a fascinating album by a fascinating man. Musically, it perhaps sounds a little dated today, but it still has some massive tunes on it. This week Weaver and Chris get into the artist, the album, the context around it and even go on some interesting excursions about the Scottish traditional/folk scene as a whole. As ever, you decide if it makes it into our discography. Vote via Facebook.

Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy explores the city of Edinburgh. Having already delved into Sheffield through the eyes of Human League’s Travelogue album, Liverpool and The Teardrop Explodes’ Kilimanjaro, and Manchester with New Order’s Power, Corruption and Lies, we’re now heading further north to the capital city of Scotland; a city of science and engineering, home of one of the biggest events in the cultural calendar, and a city with an incredibly varied history stretching back thousands of years…Edinburgh. We’re looking at an album that links the old with the new, the traditional with the electronic, and it’s Martyn Bennett’s Bothy Culture. Mr McFall's Chamber is a flexible ensemble of mostly classical players for whom the lure of other musical styles has proved irresistible. They are well known for their eclectic mix of musical genres, programming classical and contemporary composers alongside rock, tango, klezmer and jazz. This effortless blurring of music's pigeonholes makes for an ideal partnership with gifted composer and multi-instrumentalist Fraser Fifield, who successfully combines traditional music with Scottish folk and jazz. Joining the musicians are percussionists Tom Bancroft and James Mackintosh. Together they perform a programme celebrating the legacy of the late lamented Martyn Bennett, who was one of Scotland's most feted young musicians for his bold musical synthesis of traditional tunes, dance music and classical sensibility. The programme highlights Bennett's profound understanding of the Scottish folk tradition, featuring well known Bennett works e.g Cuillin Music alongside Piece for String Quartet, Percussion and Scottish Small Pipes in C, an early work thought to have been lost until a copy turned up in the Arts Council's files. The Scottish flavour is further enhanced with music by Fraser Fifield and a reworking of Eddie Maguire's Nocturnes. A Latin – American component in the typical McFall's style completes the programme including music by Alvares and Piazzolla.
