It's welcome back to the podcast after our Christmas and New Year break. We kick off by reflecting on how we both spent Hogmanay in our different ways, Lesley's island sojourn sounds affy braw.Much criticism has been levelled at BBC Scotland in particular for its pallid Hogmanay programming and Lesley takes the opportunity to compare the "official" media offerings with the work of the late Martyn Bennett and the Grit Orchestra. Suffice to say the authorised ones don't stand the comparison well.....It seems now is the time for a complete rethink on BBC and STV Hogmanay fare.We also discuss the cancellation of the official Edinburgh celebrations. Is it time for the capital to have a complete rethink ?Martyn Bennett's music and Danny MacAskill's cycling on the Cuillin - 81 million views!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ_IQS3VKjAGrit Orchestra gig - just two seats left!!https://tickets.glasgowlife.org.uk/34209/34210Lesley talks about her new, self filmed, series of short videos she's filming on her travels around Scotland.Lesley also reflects on the recent funeral of 'John the Bird' Chester on Eigg.https://x.com/LesleyRiddoch/status/1876598275693859210Anas Sarwar in his most recent speech talked about reducing the number of quangos but was somewhat less than comprehensive in how he would do this and even less specific on what a Labour administration would cut other than reducing the number of Health Boards. However is there a kernel of truth in Sarwar's statement? Has the growth of quangos led to the creation, as Robin McAlpine said, of " A feudal system of nested fiefdoms each insulated from the transparency and accountability nominally radiating from the one above"?We also discuss Sarwar's appearance on Good Morning Scotland where Laura Maxwell grilled him on his stances on the 2 Child Benefit Cap, Winter Fuel Allowance, and the WASPI women. We also discuss Neil Mackay's recent Herald article analysing the growth in support for Scottish independence as UK Labour tanks in the polls. Is the SNP in a fit state to profit from this? Is it radical enough to get independence over the line?Listener Leslie Wilson got in touch after our chat on swimmer Duncan Scott to highlight the television coverage-lack of- of Bruce Mouat's champion curling rink. We discuss. ★ Support this podcast ★

We sat down with Louis Eisenhut and we are stoked to be sharing this episode with you! Most people know Louis as a creator on Instagram, Youtube and TikTok, and of course, we do get to hear about how he got started, what motivates him to continue creating new content and how he tries to stay relevant in the ever changing social media landscape. More importantly though, we also talk about how Louis is using his reach and experience in social media to achieve positive outcomes for the community and it was interesting to hear how he is trying to help the sport and trail building projects progress in his home region around Interlaken. With Thoughts Under The Helmet, Louis also launched a podcast earlier in the year and naturally, as fellow podcasters existing in a similar niche, we have to ask about the experience so far and about his main takeaways from chats with guests like Danny MacAskill or Birgit Bless.

What's New in the 303: Paratriathlete Kyle Coon's Christmas Gift, Meet Hugh MORRISTOWN, N.J. – In December, The Seeing Eye passed an important milestone when it paired Kyle Coon of Colorado Springs, Colo. with a 2-year-old black Labrador retriever named Hugh, making them the 18,000th team to graduate from the program since 1929. This milestone is reached as the non-profit approaches its 94th anniversary in January. Kyle Coon and Hugh“How amazing it is to pair Kyle with Hugh, to help guide him on all of the journeys that life takes them on. Just like every team that came before, their partnership was created with careful consideration, and support from countless individuals throughout the community,” said Seeing Eye President & CEO Peggi Howard. “We are so grateful for the graduates who choose our dogs, the puppy raisers and staff who lovingly care for our dogs, and all of the volunteers and donors who came together to play a part in creating 18,000 Seeing Eye partnerships over the last 94 years.” Listen to our podcast with Kyle getting ready for the Paralympics HERE Coon, a 31-year-old triathlete, motivational speaker and author, is a member of the U.S. Paratriathlon Resident Team in Colorado Springs. In his free time, he enjoys rock climbing, downhill skiing and playing the guitar. Hugh is Coon's third Seeing Eye dog. “From the time I was a little kid, I dreamed of being able to cruise around independently with a dog. Now I've been matched with Hugh, my third Seeing Eye Dog, and I can't begin to express how much confidence I have when we're out and about,” said Kyle Coon. “As Team USA athletes we dedicate a certain portion of our lives to being the best in our chosen sport. Hugh is dedicated to making sure we travel smoothly and safely. I'm extremely honored and humbled to be part of the 18,000th match in The Seeing Eye's history, and I can't wait to see what adventures Hugh and I experience together from here on out.” Established in 1929, The Seeing Eye provides specially bred and trained dogs to guide people who are blind. Seeing Eye dog users experience greatly enhanced mobility and independence, allowing them to retain their active lifestyles despite blindness. Endurance News: Worldwide survey of fitness trends for 2023 American College of Sports Medicine's Health & Fitness Journal The #1 trend for 2023, as it was for 2022, is wearable technology. Home exercise gyms was #2 for 2022 but has dropped to #13 for 2023. Fitness programs for older adults will make a comeback in 2023, breaking the top 10 at #4. THE SURVEY Every attempt was made to replicate the survey delivery as in the past 17 years. For the 2023 survey, there were 42 possible trends. Top-rated trends from previous years were included in the survey, as were potentially emerging trends identified by the editors of this Journal. The editors represent practitioners from all four sectors of the health and fitness industry (corporate, clinical, community, commercial), as well as from academia. In the survey, potential trends were identified followed by a brief explanation to offer the respondents a few details without inconveniencing them with too much reading, analysis, or interpretation. The survey was designed to be completed in approximately 15 minutes. This survey guides health and fitness programming efforts for 2023 and beyond. The first survey (1), conducted in 2006 (for predictions in 2007), introduced a systematic way to forecast trends. These surveys have been conducted annually since that time (2–16) using the same methodology. Because this is a survey of trends (and not fads), respondents were asked to first make an especially important distinction between a “fad” and a “trend.” Trend: “a general development or change in a situation or in the way that people are behaving” (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/trend). Fad: “a style, activity, or interest that is very popular for a short period of time” (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/fad). Responses were received from almost every continent, including the countries of Australia, Brazil, Barbados, Canada, China, Columbia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Jordan, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Libya, Malawi, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, Vietnam, and the United States, among many others. Demographics of the survey respondents included 58% females (41% males) across a wide variability in ages (Figure 1), with 55% of all respondents having more than 10 years of industry experience (Figure 2) and 29% with more than 20 years of experience. Endurance News: IRONMAN Announces Plan for Dual Hosts for VinFast IRONMAN World Championship TAMPA, Fla. (Nov. 30, 2022) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Following the first-ever two-day IRONMAN World Championship and a continued commitment to providing women and men their own dedicated day of racing, IRONMAN announced today that the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN® World Championship triathlon will move forward with two different host venues. To ensure that both professional and amateur women and men have a focused IRONMAN World Championship race experience, the women will race in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i on October 14, 2023, with the men's race date and location outside of Hawai`i currently being evaluated and expected to be announced in January 2023. For 2024, the men and women would exchange locations. The 2022 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship was held this past October in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i over two days for the first time in the history of the event, showcasing the very best women and men in the sport while giving both their deserved spotlight. With the future dual host locations and separation of race weeks, the women's and men's races will each garner further attention with all eyes focused on the race week activities and lead up to their respective IRONMAN World Championship race days. While the 2022 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship two-day format was a success in many areas and the two-day format in Kailua-Kona for 2023 had already been announced, IRONMAN and the County of Hawai'i concluded together that the impact of two days of racing in Kona is not currently in the best interest of the local community. “We are reinforcing our commitment for a dedicated world championship race experience for women and men to each receive an exclusive spotlight on their race. Hawai`i is in our DNA and we look forward to the first-ever exclusively women's world championship race week in Kona. At the same time, we are looking forward to announcing a co-host location for the men's race that will be worthy of an IRONMAN World Championship and will capture the imagination of our athletes and fans,” said Andrew Messick, President & Chief Executive Officer for The IRONMAN Group. Hawai`i is the proud birthplace of IRONMAN and despite not being able to undertake a two-day world championship event at this time, it will continue to be an important part in the shared history of IRONMAN, with Kona continuing as a co-host of the IRONMAN World Championship. “Hawai`i County has long enjoyed partnering with IRONMAN and this year's epic races were another example of world-class athletic competition held on the traditional Kona-Kohala world championship course,” said Hawai`i County Mayor Mitch Roth. We learned, however, that more than one race day during IRONMAN week is too many for the community to manage. We are pleased that IRONMAN plans to return to Kailua-Kona as a co-host of the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship and look forward to more exciting events in the future.” With this major move to ensure dedicated IRONMAN World Championship racing for both women's and men's fields, the qualifying cycle and slot allocations will be slightly adjusted. Allocations may be viewed here, www.ironman.com/im-world-championship-2023-slot with further adjustments to occur in line with the Men's Championship race location announcement, expected to occur in January. Additionally, all athletes who have previously qualified and registered for the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship will be contacted directly with additional information. Tour de France will skip Paris finale in 2024 For the first time in race history, the Tour de France will not conclude in Paris in 2024. That's according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, which reports that Nice will be the host of the final stage in two years. Why? With the Olympic Games set for Paris from late July into mid-August, officials do not want the logistical and security issues overlapping between the Games and the Tour. The final stage of the Tour has always been in Paris (or in nearby suburbs), and since 1975 the final stage has ended on the Champs-Élysées. The 2024 edition of the Tour is expected to start in Italy for the first time, with stages in Tuscany and the Piemonte regions before dipping into France. The race would then embark on its traditional “grande boucle” around France, but instead of heading to Paris, it will loop back toward Nice for the finale. Nice recently hosted the “grand départ” of the 2020 edition of the Tour that was rescheduled for September in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Details of the 2023 edition are already revealed, with the race starting in Spain's Basque Country, and the final stage, as always, in Paris. Chloe Dygert undergoes surgery to treat tachycardia Chloé Dygert has undergone surgery to treat supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a condition which causes episodes where the heart beats much faster than usual. The North American rider revealed the information in a post on Instagram accompanied by video clips of herself lying in a hospital bed. "My SVT was annoying but not life-threatening, (as long as I stopped immediately if I was training)," Dygert, who is set to embark on her third season with Canyon-Sram next year, wrote. "My most recent episode happened while I was out on an easy basic endurance ride, my heart rate peaked at 219, then sat at 205 for five minutes and 195 for another ten minutes. "It would jump between 180 to 205 in the remainder of the episode lasting 35 minutes. I stopped and sat on the side of the road to wait for my heart rate to slow back down below 150." Dygert explained that she had been suffering from the condition for nearly a decade, though the frequency of the SVT episodes had increased in recent months. "It started for the first time back in 2015, only happening once or twice a year until this year," she wrote of the condition, which is rarely life-threatening but may cause a cardiac arrest or unconsciousness. "But just the past two months it has triggered five times. My fear is having one during a race and needing to stop so we made the decision to go in and get it fixed with the frequency increase." Dygert has endured a hard two years after suffering a brutal crash during the Road World Championships time trial in 2020. She was away from racing for nine months following the devastating knee injury suffered after colliding with a guard rail during the Imola time trial. Last year she took part in the Olympic Games road race and time trial, though her 2022 season was once again ruined thanks to a bout of the Epstein-Barr virus. Her SVT surgery seems to only be a minor blip in her recovery, however, as Dygert revealed that she is already back on the bike and training. "I was awake and lightly sedated during the procedure," she wrote. "Definitely one of the most unique kinds of pains I've ever felt. In the recovery, I wasn't allowed to move for 4 hours, giving the artery time to heal from the catheter ablation. I was back on my bike within 5 days after the procedure with only one minor hiccup happening on day 5." What's New in the 303: Meet the East High School Mountain Bike Team East is one of several teams in the league made up of kids that attend different high schools. East and South are the only Denver Public School teams in the league. 96 teams make up the league with schools as far north as Spearfish, South Dakota, and south into Northern New Mexico. How many different schools are represented on the East Team? Denver Online HS, Denver School of Arts HS, DSST: Byers HS, DSST: Cole HS, DSST: Conservatory Green HS, DSST: Montview HS, East High School, George Washington High School, Hill Campus of Arts and Sciences, Morey Middle School, North High School, Northfield High School. Describe the growth of the team over the years. The team was founded in 2010 by Steve Bussey, an employee in the District's Office of Technology. Over the next ten years, the team grew and sometimes shrank before reaching a high point of over 50 riders. However, the team shrank significantly during the pandemic and subsequent cancellation of the racing season. Coming out of the pandemic, we expected the team to be approximately 30 riders, but were pleasantly surprised to field 42 riders and racers by the end of the season. Many are girls and/or high school seniors who joined the team for the first time. In general, how experienced are kids on the team at racing, does the team attract never-before riders as much as experienced riders? Most of our riders have some experience riding trails and some already have experience racing mountain, road, or cyclocross. However, the majority of our riders have never raced before joining the team. More interestingly, being a city-based team, some of our new team members have never owned or ridden a mountain bike before, We love attracting those new to the sport. So, while the learning curve can be steep, it is incredibly rewarding. Some of our favorite stories involve our new riders and the improvement they see over the course of a season. Favorite practice rides and how often do they practice? We practice Monday and Wednesday evenings on the Front Range trails. To avoid the heat in the early part of the season, Three Sisters and Lair ‘O The Bear are favorites. As the days get shorter and cooler, we frequent Green Mtn, North Table, Chimney Gulch, and Erie Bike Park. On non-race weekends, we try to organize rides a little further afield at places like Buffalo Creek or Trestle Bike Park. The biggest hurdle for the team is getting to the trails. Every practice will have a drive 30 minutes or more just to get to the trails. We rely on riders and parents to organize transportation for those unable to drive themselves. It's not easy.
Yesterday, we talked with Claudio Caluori who had just returned from Israel. The conflict between Israel and Palestine had escalated while Claudio was there, and we wanted to learn more about the work he was doing in Israel; why he stayed to finish the project; and what he learned by virtue of being on the ground there. We also discuss a really exciting project that Claudio breaks the news about during this conversation.TOPICS & TIMES:Velosolutions update (1:48)Building pump tracks in Israel (4:11)Being on the ground during the conflict (15:00)Plans to build in Palestine (21:54)Grow Cycling pump track update (22:47)2021 plans & race season predictions (27:54)Everesting on E-Bikes (30:13)Filming with Danny MacAskill (32:24)RELATED LINKS:Blister Mountain Bike Buyer's GuideBecome a Blister Member See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 137 of The Grey NATO begs the question – “what if we were in charge?”. With a classic CEO-for-a-day dream scenario, Jason and James breakdown their co-CEO plans for some of TGNs favorite brands. The Pelagos gets a GMT, IWC goes deep on the Aquatimer, Rolex needs to think older, and Sinn basically just needs to keep up the good work (to mention only a few!). While we are not entirely confident that the TGN-boys would make passible watch brand CEOs, they certainly aren't short on ideas. From the get-go, Jason provides an update for his forthcoming novel – Depth Charge – and James gets bored of talking about just how little he is doing these days. As always, stay in the mix for a high-riding Final Notes with some much needed Danny MacAskill and a nod to the latest iteration of Top Gear America. Thanks so much for listening and be sure to hit the comments and let us know what big changes you would make if you could be a watch brand CEO for a day. 2:15 Depth Charge (Jason's Book!) https://bit.ly/3bGaG00 7:25 Jason's Aquastar Benthos 500 https://bit.ly/3d9WeBB 9:40 James' Explorer II https://bit.ly/3eOpqfR 51:03 Monochrome watches photoshop of Pelagos GMT http://bit.ly/1MfcGcc 59:35 Danny MacAskill “The Slabs” https://bit.ly/2YYd51Q 1:03:20 MotorTrend's Top Gear America https://bit.ly/3a2ATaX
This week Duncan is joined by close friends Danny MacAskill, and Robbie Meade to talk about their latest project "The Slabs". A short film that Danny has recently released on YouTube in which he descends down one of The UK's finest moderate climbs, The Black Slabs on The Isle of Skye, aboard his Santa Cruz mountain bike.Danny MacAskill is a Scottish mountain biker who shot to fame in the spring of 2009 after releasing "Inspired Bicycles" a wee video that he and his flatmate Dave Sowerby had shot over a few months around the streets of Edinburgh. In episode 12, hosts Norman Blissett and Chris Foggin hear from Suzanne Forup, Head of Development for Cycling UK in Scotland and share our awe of Danny MacAskill's latest video. Suzanne is one of the top 100 women in cycling in the UK and an active campaigner to get more women on their bikes. She shares some of her life in cycling and how we can encourage more women to cycle. Last year, she rode the Herring Road, a 29 mile (47km) trail over the Lammermuir Hills in South East Scotland, from Dunbar to Lauder. In the 18th and 19th century, fishwives from Dunbar walked and ran the trail in a day with 50lbs (20kgs) of herring on their backs. For comparison, It took Suzanne 11 hours ride and was her hardest day on a bike. If you haven't watched Danny MacAskill's latest video, The Slabs, make sure you check it out on You Tube. He rides down the Dubh Slabs on the Cuillin Mountains in Skye, Scotland. Utterly breathtaking. We share our awe in the podcast.
In an exclsuive Irish interview, Cormac and Saoirse chat to Scotsman and extreme mountain biker Danny MacAskill about his latest adventure The Slab, which has just been released on his YouTube Channel. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Donate here: https://bit.ly/LSBuyPint Think ‘viral video’ and a couple of examples from the last decade stand out. Danny Macaskill’s ‘Inspired Bicycles’, certainly. Ben Moon’s ‘Denali’, too. Like a lot of people - over 20 million at the last count - this beautiful, moving tribute to his dog was the first time I became aware of Ben and his work as a photographer, filmer and writer. As is the case with any creative work that achieves huge success, the film hit hard on a deeply emotional level; successfully conveying the uniqueness of our bond with dogs, as well as the purity of Ben’s relationship with Denali himself. The success of ‘Denali’ made it inevitable that the story would evolve into unexpected directions, and Ben soon followed the initial short film with an extremely honest and emotionally affecting book about his life and relationship with Denali. I really like the Denali story, and I especially enjoyed our conversation, because it is a great reminder to regard the act of creativity as a series of concentric circles, within which new meanings can accrue and accumulate from one single starting point. Now, with the news that a film adaption of the story is on the way, I sat down with Ben to discuss the whole story. Like a lot of my favourite Looking Sideways conversations, this was a lovely chat that took its own sweet time and went off in some lovely tangential directions. Of course we talked about Denali - the dog and the short film - but we also chatted about Ben’s career as a creative in the adventure world, the nature of style, the emotional challenge of creating honestly, and other favourite Looking Sideways themes. Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.

You may be familiar with the name Cut Media as the creators of the most iconic/viral mountain bike films of all time including Danny MacAskill's Imaginate, Wee Day Out, The Ridge and also the recent Focus Bikes Designed For Down campaign plus tonnes more. During the episode we take a deep dive into Stu's history in mountain biking which, started out with racing downhill under the team ‘The Clan' that his Dad started to help out fellow Scottish racers, onto racing world cups and then how he got involved with marketing, film making and the evolution of Cut Media. Their journey began the evening of Friday, June 19th at 6:30pm MT, at the Utah-Colorado border just west of Grand Junction. Their goal, to complete a 483-mile relay ride across the state of Colorado while raising money for the USA Triathlon Foundation COVID-19 Relief Fund and the Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado. Over the course of 483 miles, the riders averaged 20 mph, climbed nearly 23,000 feet of elevation with their highest point at Monarch Pass at 11,312 feet of elevation. Just before 8:00pm and beating the sunset, all nine riders joined together for the final mile to the Kansas-Colorado state line. Among the riders in this event was USA Triathlon CEO Rocky Harris. We also saw that USA Triathlon Foundation Awards $110,000 in COVID-19 Relief Fund Grants. With races trying to find a path to get back open, we were curious how USAT is playing a role in this process. We were able to catch up with Rocky Harris himself. Racing In A COVID World We are so close to racing in a COVID world! Pools are beginning to open up. Gyms are doing the same. A few races are sticking to their calendar and are appearing to be a go in the next couple of months. But just because I am saying “racing in a COVID world” it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be business as usual. Here are my coaching tips on what to do different in your training to be ready for a race experience that too will have a very different look and feel than in the past. Let me start with the racing guidelines that are being put out by both USAT and by IRONMAN. Knowing what will likely be different at your races will help you craft your training to be ready for them. Was macht sie so erfolgreich? Wie investieren sie ihre Zeit und ihr Geld? Und vor allem: Was kannst du von ihnen lernen, um den nächsten Game Changer nicht zu erkennen, sondern auch selbst einer zu werden. Vergangene Episoden und alle Infos über die Serie Game Changers findest du hier. In the first episode I decode trial bike legend Danny MacAskill. Danny is to me the best human on a bicycle today. He comes from a trial bike background which is pathing through an obstacle course without setting foot to ground. But he took it to the next level and created a whole new discipline by bringing trial to the street. In this interview we did in the Red Bull Music Studio in London, we talked about how to get millions of views on YouTube, his fears and getting back on the bike after multiple injuries. Go check out the Vlog of my day with Danny in London: https://youtu.be/EBkuFUH4u8IClick here for the Video-Podcast on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ytyIjG-jXAsDon’t miss out when we drop the second episode next week with Scotty James, professional snowboarder and Olympic bronze medalist. Full episodes info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com It’s the first half of my episode 100 bonanza! To mark my ascension to triple figures, I wanted to stoke my loyal listeners out AND do something that sums up the spirit of the podcast. So I’m releasing two episodes at the same time and calling them BOTH episode 100. This, episode 100a, is the first instalment, and is my interview with the great Danny MacAskill. Danny is a professional street trials rider who is one of the great stars of the viral age. In many ways, his career is emblematic of the way that action sports and the wider media landscape have evolved over the last decade. As everybody knows, Danny came to prominence when he released Inspired Bicycles, a film he made with some mates around Edinburgh which quickly became one of the defining viral films of the last ten years. It also made him globally famous, with the opportunities afforded by such a platform, and he took full advantage of it with a string of peerless films that upped the ante with each release, and showcased his creativity and sense of humour into the bargain. Naturally, I’ve been keen to get him on the podcast for years, and happily Danny agreed to meet up for an episode 100 chat. So I headed to Edinburgh to meet Danny and get his own take on the last crazy decade. The result was a relaxed and intimate chat in which new covered the lot. Big thanks to Danny and Till Bohlig for helping make this one a reality. Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.
Sonido Alejandro Yllarramendy

After being rejected from all the conservatories which he applied to. Coy White decided to buy a ticket to the UK. Unfortunately, things didn’t get much easier from there. As a BMX rider, Coy wanted to fulfill his dreams of traveling and riding his bike in unseen streets. But, it just seemed like he couldn’t catch a break. Transporting the bike internationally was a nightmare and finding individuals nearby in the action sports scene was even tougher. That being said, there are two very important silver linings that came out of this trip: He got to stay at BMX legend, Danny MacAskill’s flat in Scotland (so cool!!) The trip served as a catalyst for him to launch Sprackle, an app for action sports athletes to connect and build community worldwide.
