This episode is bona fide! Back in the year 2000, the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers' "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" took the world by storm. We're here to break down the influences and sources of The Soggy Bottom Boys' biggest hit, "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow," along with every other song they perform in this movie. Those aren't really George Clooney's pipes you hear in the recording, but real-life singer Dan Tyminski is a man of constant praise in the bluegrass community. Did you know he had a Hot 100 hit in 2013? Also, Jacksfilms calls in to dispute the idea that this movie was based on Homer's Odyssey!

Episode 312: In one of the big surprise stories in roots music of the past six months, bluegrass star and IIIrd Tyme Out founder Russell Moore was named the newest member of Alison Krauss and Union Station, taking over the male vocal and guitar role held by Dan Tyminski for years. Moore is on the upcoming album Arcadia and set to go on extensive tours in 2025 and ‘26. It's a big move for this fan favorite.  Moore got his start with Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver in the 80s and then started his own band - IIIrd Tyme Out - in 1991. Since then he's been perhaps the most awarded male voice in bluegrass. This is the story of how he launched and managed his impressive and influential career.

Roots music found commercial success in 2000 with the release of the movie O Brother Where Art Thou, a finely crafted but outrageous tale of Depression-era America with fantastical imagery of hair wax, baptisms, and chain gangs woven into a tapestry built from Homer's Odyssey. The music, assembled by T-Bone Burnett, was a major component of the film and recorded before the film even began with Burnett working with the Coen brothers while the script was in its working phases. It would become an effort that elevated a genre at the turn of the century called Americana. This week's show will share some of the period-specific music that helped to propel the notion that blues, jazz, bluegrass, country, and gospel could be used to put that time and a ghostly familiar culture into focus. We'll use O Brother's musical sensibilities to take us somewhere quite familiar (and at the same time quite terrifying) as we pay homage with Americana roots, featuring sounds from The Carters, Jesse Fuller, Dan Tyminski, Jimmie Rodgers, W. Lee “Pappy” O'Daniel & His Hillbilly Boys, among others.

It would be very easy to think that rap and hip hop have little if anything in common with music like bluegrass and old time. After all, we have been led to believe that these styles of music come from cultures on opposite sides of the musical spectrum. How could the two have any common ground? Actually, they have many more connections than you might imagine. This connection is embodied in groups like Gangstagrass and in recent work by Jake Blount, and as members of Gangstagrass point out in our conversation here, rap and folk music both stem from the same instincts. At its heart, this is about a musical path that diverged centuries ago, or at least seemed to.In this episode we speak with Dolio the Sleuth, Rench the Mastermind and B.E. Farrow of Gangstagrass, as well as Dan Tyminski, who performed with them last fall, and we welcome Dr. Jordan Laney of Virginia Tech and the Virginia Rural Health Association, and author, podcaster and former editor at No Depression and Folk Alley, Kim Ruehl, as we unravel a story that began centuries ago, but has only recently reached a pivotal chapter in its history. Gangstagrass Songs heard in this episode:“Floo-id” by Turbo Pro Project, from Daydream, excerpt“The Downward Road” featuring Demeanor, by Jake Blount, from The New Faith, excerpt“Ride With You” by Gangstagrass, from No Time For Enemies, excerpt“Talking Columbia” by Woody Guthrie, from Hard Travelin': The Asch Recordings, Vol. 3, excerpt“Nickel and Dime Blues” by Gangstagrass, from No Time For EnemiesWe are glad you came by, and are even more grateful whenever you share this with someone. Please follow us on your podcast platform of choice, and then it will only take a minute to give it a good rating and, where it is an option, a review. Great ratings, and reviews especially, will make Southern Songs and Stories and the artists it profiles more likely to be found by more people just like you. There's a great deal of variety in bluegrass music, as this episode will demonstrate. From the ‘straight ahead' classic sound of Dan Tyminski, Hot Rize to the Flatt & Scruggs sound of The Earls Of Leicester; from the banjo-and-ballad music from Bill Keith to the emotive vocals of Laurie Lewis; the ‘family' sound of the Bluegrass Martins to the plaintive sound of Emmy Lou Harris, there's lots to enjoy in this show.

Hi everyone.I've had a couple of weeks off the podcast to have a holiday, but I've been mulling over something Dan Tyminski said in the interview I did with him a couple of weeks ago and wanted to share it.It's about the idea of reacting in music, rather than just playing. Dan talked about how Tony Rice did that and also how he does, and it got me thinking. The idea of music as a conversation, one that relies on listening as much as speaking, is something I've always been interested in. Have a listen and see what you think. Here's the interview with Dan Tyminski, in case you missed it.Happy picking!Matt

I know you will enjoy meeting my friend Curtis Jones. If you want your mind blown, go see him play live.   His interview is another in my series to try to convince the listeners that Georgia has produced an amazing number of fine bluegrass musicians. Sometimes many people tend to think that great bluegrass simply must come from Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia or Tennessee. Curtis is one more great example in favor of Georgia born musicians.   The segue music you hear at the start of the interview is from Curtis' CD "Blue As I" (1998) and is a bit of his original instrumental "Pistol Pete". The outro music is his song "Better Days" from the same recording.   Both tunes feature Curtis on guitar, Alison Brown on banjo, Dan Tyminski on mandolin and Missy Raines on bass. "Better Days" features Curtis singing lead with Shawn Lane singing tenor.   Enjoy the show. ------------------------------------- If you like my podcast I hope you will keep this show going and growing by joining "the club" over on my Patreon page. Buddy Iahn and Matt Bailey recap an arduous year The year 2021 was monumental to say the least. It was the second year of a pandemic that continued to dictate the concert industry as artists returned or attempted to return to the road. It wasn't until the back half of the year when concerts starting trekking away again, but COVID continued to rear its ugly head as artists and members of their touring camps were diagnosed with breakthrough cases of COVID. Some artists even decided to cancel or postpone planned tour dates as new coronavirus variants began taking shape and cases continued to rise. Our first show back was in June with Dan Tyminski before heading to Vegas in July to see Dwight Yoakam and Randy Houser one night and Garth Brooks the next. Our concert coverage continued full force with coverage of Alice Cooper, Justin Moore, Jack Harlow, Luke Combs, Chicago, Hank Williams Jr, Collective Soul, an all-star tribute to Lee Greenwood in Alabama, and others before Buddy Iahn and Matt Bailey once again convened in Las Vegas for another three shows that featured Shania Twain, Reba and Brooks & Dunn and Carrie Underwood in early December. Matt finished out the year with another impressive run of shows in the Washington DC area that included KT Tunstall and two nights with Eric Church before wrapping with Trans-Siberian Orchestra on Christmas Eve-Eve. We were blessed with some big guests on this show in 2021. Gene Simmons, Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen, SiriusXM host Eddie Trunk, Police drummer Stewart Copeland and many others graced us with their presence. We also reached our milestone 100th episode which was an NFT-focused show with members of Goodie Mob and Curio's founder Ben Arnon. We are guestless for this recap which was recorded in our Las Vegas hotel room in December. We want to thank all of our website visitors, podcast listeners, guests, publicists, artists, advertisers and everyone involved in bringing you the best content we can. Cheers to 2022 and an even bigger year to boot across the board. Be sure to subscribe to The Music Universe Podcast wherever you get your podcasts.

Flatland Cavalry, Country Is…Flatland Cavalry, A Cowboy Knows HowBen Mastwyk, Trouble's What I FoundBen Mastwyk, Facets of the DiamondHiss Golden Messenger, The Great MystifierHiss Golden Messenger, HardlytownFarmer Dave & The Wizards Of The West, Cave WallsFarmer Dave & The Wizards Of The West, Babe Got Plans (For Me)Ronnie Milsap, Big Bertha (feat. Tyminski discusses his return to the road and new music Throughout his 30+ year career, Dan Tyminski has left his mark in every corner of modern music. Tyminski's voice famously accompanies George Clooney's performance of the Stanley Brother's classic song, "I'm A Man of Constant Sorrow," in the film, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou. His vocal collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii on the song “Hey, Brother” was a global smash, having been streamed over one billion times to date. Tyminski has contributed guitar and/or harmony to projects by Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Kenny Chesney, LeAnn Rimes, Aaron Lewis and Rob Thomas, to name a few. In addition to his highly successful solo career, Tyminski has played guitar and mandolin for Alison Krauss and Union Station since 1994. His unmatched instrumental skills and burnished, soulful tenor voice have been key components of the band. Tyminski has been honored with 14 Grammy Awards from 18 nominations, was named Male Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association four times and was recognized as 2004's Male Vocalist of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America. Following a two and a half year break from road, Tyminski is back on the road as he preps for new music that was recorded at his newly built home studio. Matt Bailey had the rare opportunity to interview Tyminski ahead of his show on Sunday, June 20th at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis, MD where the pair discuss the new music, returning to the stage and more. That’s How Rumors Get Started.

Escuchar audio

Music fans have seen and heard him on stage for years with Buddy Miller, Emmylou Harris and others. He's the guy with the pork pie hat (which the evidence will show he was wearing before it was a fad) playing the organ and the accordion. He's also a successful producer and songwriter. His story is fascinating. His journey of faith is personal and challenging. And he's one of Nashville's deep thinkers and understated musical heroes. Phil Madeira is my guest. Madeira grew up in Barrington, Rhode Island in a religious family. His father was a Baptist minister - albeit a moderate one he says. In his 2011 memoir God On The Rocks, Distilling Religion, Savoring Faith, Phil says he was obsessed from an early age with the blues and gospel music of the deep south. He played drums, then guitar and keyboards, and his first working band was several years on the road with Christian rocker and guitar player Phil Keaggy. In Nashville, where he's lived for more than thirty years, Madeira migrated from Christian music to Americana, sometimes in tandem with his friends and collaborators Buddy and Julie Miller. Madeira's songs have been recorded by Alison Krauss, Garth Brooks and Bruce Hornsby among many others. His highest profile achievement to date however may have been producing the 2011 anthology Mercyland: Hymns for the Rest of Us. The project included contributions from a multitude of top tier artists. Emmylou Harris, Shawn Mullins, Dan Tyminski and others took on the producer's challenge to write about God as Love and nothing more. It was hailed by critics, spawned a remarkable live event at the 2012 Americana convention in Nashville and ultimately inspired a second volume in 2016. Also this hour, a conversation with John Lomax III of Nashville, grandson of John Avery Lomax, one of America's foremost folklorists and song hunters. Lewis penned eight of the songs, in addition to covering Chris Stapleton’s “Whiskey and You” and The Dixie Chicks’ “Travelin’ Soldier.” Additionally, Lewis collaborates with Willie Nelson on the album’s title track while Grammy Award-winning artists Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminski and Vince Gill are also featured. SINNER was also one of Billboard’s 10 Best Country Albums of 2016, while The Boot raves, “Aaron Lewis shows a surprising understanding and respect for country music with his latest album, SINNER. Alberta's PAUL BRANDT -  the most awarded male Canadian Country Music artist in history - climbed the charts once again this summer with his song Forever Summer. It's another title on his long list of hits which include My Heart Has A History, I Do, That's The Truth, Small Towns & Big Dreams and Didn't Even See The Dust.  A former pediatric registered nurse, Paul had a passion for words and poetry early in life, and began to write music at the age of 13. He also had the goal of one day becoming a doctor. While reaching for his medical dreams during his college years, Paul started entering and winning talent competitions, one of which was the Youth Talent Showdown at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. He credits these contests as events that altered the course of his life. Just As I Am, his 11th studio album (released October 2012), features well-known Gospel songs. The album includes collaborations with artists including Patty Loveless, Ricky Skaggs, Dan Tyminski, John Anderson, The Whites, The Isaacs, Jon Randall Stewart and High Valley.

Cruz Contreras certainly knows about life on the road.  After his first group dissolved, he hit the road again as a truck driver based in East Tennessee.  It didn't take him long to put the pieces together for his next venture, which is growing stronger every year.  With a voice compared to Randy Travis, Dan Tyminski, and even Ralph Stanley, he is leading The Black Lillies to national acclaim.  With their third studio album "Runaway Freeway Blues," they continue to leave home in Knoxville, Tennessee to play over 200 dates each year.  We had a chance to catch up with them on a swing through Nashville to hear what they're all about.

I'm excited to be putting out my first podcast of 2014, with some amazing new music on it. I had a hard time whittling down the tracks — at one point I had over 45 songs on the playlist! I could easily put out a 2nd version right away (hmmm….) This one feels special for me because it contains the first remix that I've ever had my own name on — the remix of "Brave" by Sara Bareilles done by George Figares and myself. I hope you enjoy it! And for everyone stuck in the polar vortex, KEEP DANCING to stay warm! My Upcoming Live Schedule: January 10th - Stripper Circus, Share Nightclub, Las Vegas January 11th - Rasputin: Russian Love Machine, West Hollywood February 2nd – Size Sundays, Here lounge, West Hollywood February 16th – Tortilla Republic, West Hollywood February 21st - 23rd, 2014 – [Elevation: Park City] (gay ski week) February 28th - Stripper Circus, Share Nightclub, Las Vegas March 23rd – Size Sundays, Here lounge, West Hollywood The Tracklist: "I Feel Love" (Afrojack Remix), Donna Summer "Higher" (DJ Escape & Tony Coluccio Main MIx), Deborah Cox feat. Paige "The Monster" (eSQUIRE Vs. OFFBeat Remix), Eminem feat. Rihanna "Timber" (Dirty Pop Deconstruction), Ke$ha feat. Pitbull "Girlfriend" (The Chainsmokers Remix), Icona Pop "Satellite" (Ivan Gomez & Nacho Chapado Club Mix), Justin Caruso & Aude f./Christina Novelli "Saturday Night" (Casey Alva Loose Cirkuit Remix), Natalia Kills "Cannonball" (Dave Aude Club Mix), Lea Michele "When Love Takes Over" (Theresa & Lace Remix) - Billy Lace re-edit, David Guetta feat. LeAnn Rimes recently released her most personal album ever.  LeAnn refers to "Spitfire" as an "intimate conversation between her and whoever's listening."  The album features several special guests including Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 and Jeff Beck, along with Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski.  "Borrowed" was the lead single off the album, which covers material that was very difficult for her to write.  Kelly Lynn caught up with LeAnn to talk about the new project, which hit stores last month.

You and I are out on a run together.  As we’re getting our miles in we start to talk to each other to pass the time. This is where we get to know each other, where we start to open up a little and reveal ourselves as the persons we really are.    You and I are different, with different backgrounds, different beliefs and different understandings of the universe around us.  I want to know what you’re all about, and you might want to know what’s going on in my teenie tiny little head.  So today, let’s acknowledge that we really are out on a run together, and I’m going to reveal to you a little bit more about who I am.   These are what I call: Intervals and I’ve even gone ahead and created a couple of podcasts where I express my thoughts in a rambling diatribe format, one is recorded in audio, the other in video, both are available on iTunes.    In running, of course, an interval workout is one where you run hard for a specific duration or distance, such as once around a track, and then you run at a relaxed rate, or maybe even walk…during an interval between the running portions.   So while Phedippidations is a podcast where we have a conversation about running and running related topics; today’s episode will be an interval break from that.   Today I’m going to open up an audio family picture book of sorts, and tell you a few stories from my life.  There’s nothing earth shattering of deeply profound here…just a few snippets from a life I’ve lived that will better help you to understand this goofy middle aged, middle of the pack slightly asthmatic fellow runner who you run with each week.   LINKS:   The song “I am a Man of Constant Sorrow” was performed by, in order of appearance: The Soggy Bottom Boys and Dan Tyminski; Norman Blake, and John Hartford:
