George A. Harne, Ph.D., welcomes philosophy professor Daniel McInerny, Ph.D. They discuss art as a means of understanding truth and moral vision, emphasizing its role as a contemplative experience. The conversation highlights the mimetic nature of art, rooted in Aristotle's philosophy, and its reflection of human life. It also addresses the importance of leisure and family engagement in appreciating beauty and the need for artistic excellence.
11/25/24 - How does the Catholic church view suicide? Using a slew of Catholic characters, The Good Death of Kate Montclair provides an intimate look inside the life of an individual struggling with the weight of their suffering and contemplating whether life is worth living moving forward. When the terminally ill Kate Montclair reunites with her old friend, Adele Schraeder, at a death discussion group at her local coffee shop, she has no idea that, with Adele's help, she will soon be secretly planning her “Deathday,” at which she will break Virginia law with an assisted suicide. 11/18/24 - Dr. Daniel McInerny Daniel McInerny is associate professor and chair of the philosophy department at Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia. He is also a novelist and dramatist. As a scholar, he is foremost interested in reactivating an Aristotelian understanding of art as imitation, long out of favor among philosophers. The human person is a truth seeker, and one of the most compelling ways human beings pursue truth is through the arts. In Beauty and Imitation: A Philosophical Reflection on the Arts, Dr. McInerny argues for an understanding of art as a form of inquiry into truth that proceeds by way of sensible beauty. Drawing upon the thought of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas, McInerny argues for the unfashionable yet philosophically compelling view that art is essentially “mimetic,” imitative of human action. But what does it mean for art to imitate human action? It means that art imitates the way human beings by nature quest for fulfillment, or happiness. In questing for fulfillment, human life takes the form of a story, and so the arts—all the arts, from painting to music, from fiction to film—are storytelling arts whose beauty reveals the truth about human happiness. In his new book published by Word on Fire, Beauty & Imitation: A Philosophical Reflection on the Arts, philosopher and novelist Daniel McInerny argues for a recovery of the Aristotelian understanding of art as fundamentally imitative or mimetic. More boldly, he claims that this imitation is narrative and moral in nature, even in art forms that are not typically considered storytelling arts. In this episode Daniel introduces this theory of mimesis, after which there is a robust back-and-forth between Daniel and Thomas on whether moral narrative is really the primary purpose of arts like painting and music. We're just over two weeks into the new year. It's a time when ads promoting diet culture and self-improvement run wild across the internet. A time that tells you whoever, you are, you need to be better. Starting now. Nora McInerny argues that's not how life works. McInerny is an author with roots in Minneapolis and the host of several podcasts – including ‘Terrible, Thanks for Asking.' She joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about her version of a New Year's resolution, skepticism around New Year's messaging, and resisting the constant need to improve oneself.
Daniel McInerny joins the podcast to discuss his novel, The Good Death of Kate Montclair, the modern cult of authenticity, the desire for control that tempts people to euthanasia, and what it truly means to accept your death. Publisher's description for the novel: Kate Montclair is dying. She has arrived at late middle age loveless, childless, and having failed to achieve the career dreams of her youth. Now diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, she sees the next fourteen months of suffering as an intolerable prospect. Kate is desperate—not only for a miracle cure, but for some sense that her life, and life itself, amounts to something more than a catastrophe. When she sees an advertisement for the Washington, DC Death Symposium, Kate investigates and learns that the monthly discussion group is led by none other than the idealistic and inimitable Adele Schraeder, an old friend she has not seen since their teaching days in Rome. On Adele's advice, Kate soon decides to break Virginia law with an assisted suicide. But Adele Schraeder is not the only person Kate reconnects with at the Death Symposium. Also present is Benedict Aquila, another friend from Rome, who has been living in DC while nursing his mother through her final illness. And then there is the strange, mentally ill street woman sitting in the corner, drawing pad in hand. Who is she? She is the Ariadne's thread that will lead Kate on a journey back through the years to her youth, forcing her to come to grips with the love affair she had with a married man and the catastrophe that took his life. This lecture will be given by Dr. Daniel McInerny, a professor of philosophy at Christendom College and faculty moderator of the on-campus drama club, the Christendom Players. Dr. McInerny also teaches an upcoming Principles class on The Philosophy of Art and Beauty and has a book coming out next year from Word on Fire Academic entitled The Way of Beauty. When we hear the word “entertainment,” we may think of the frivolous, the mindless, or the downright offensive. But who among us does not enjoy some form of entertainment? And isn't it interesting that the foremost theologian of the Catholic Church, St. Thomas Aquinas, considered the right enjoyment of entertainment a part of what it means to live the virtuous life? In this brief talk, Dr. Daniel McInerny will explore the nature of entertainment, its right forms and abuses, and the challenges for Christian believers to developing virtuous entertainment in our time.

Is there a cause of all the things that are? In what does human happiness consist? Is death the end? What can I know about God? Welcoming Nora McInerny to The Pod Club! In this week's episode, host Jo Piazza is joined by friend and host of Terrible, Thanks for Asking Nora McInerny to discuss her favorite podcasts. As a podcast listener since 2009 when shows were downloaded onto iPods, not streamed from an app, McInerny is the go-to person for this kind of advice. While her own podcast is often emotional and deep, Nora's podcast recommendations cover all genres, with topics ranging from white collar crime, to Mother Teresa, and childless millennials. When Jo recommends Unread with Chris Stedman to Nora, they decide to have him on this episode too. Because why not? It's The Pod Club and we'll do whatever we want.Shows mentioned: Scam Goddess, "Hilaria hoax", "The Real Housewives of Scams, Shams and Fraud with Anna Hossnieh"The TurningBe There in Five, "Childless Millennials" Heavyweight, "Gregor"Nora's Show:Terrible, Thanks for AskingChris's Show: Unread Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The National Supplemental Screening Program, or NSSP, is a legacy program for ORAU that began in 1996. The NSSP provides free medical screenings to Department of Energy workers who have have been exposed to hazards in the workplace. The NSSP collects data to help identify if those former workers have developed any health conditions related to workplace exposures, as well as any health conditions that arise as they workers age. In this conversation, host Michael Holtz talks with John McInerny, MD, co-principal investigator for the NSSP who has been a practicing physician in various capacities for more than 50 years, and Jamie Stalker, MD, co-principal investigator, who is also medical director for the ORISE Beryllium Lab and has decades of experience as an occupational health and internal medicine physician. As Dr. McInerny heads toward retirement, Dr. Stalker will take the reins at NSSP. We discuss all of that and more in this episode of Further Together, the ORAU Podcast.
When one of the people in a relationship is dead, the relationship becomes a bit one-sided. Your version of who that person is and was is obscured by all of your own biases, your commitment to your version of the truth, to your side of the story. Nora's dad — Vietnam veteran, father of four, advertising copywriter — died seven years ago. And in this episode, the McInerny siblings reflect on who Stephen J. McInerny was … as a young boy sent to war, as a husband, and as their father. About how they love their dad, even if he wasn't always the kind of dad they wanted. — Sign up today for TTFA Premium! Is the discipline of physics the “Queen of the Sciences”? In this conversation with polymath and professor Jim Clarage, we discuss the ways in which the discipline of physics takes up all seven of the classical liberal arts. Along the way we consider other disciplines—music, mathematics, and theology—that also may fulfill this role and why Newman's “circle of the sciences” remains relevant today. With cameos by Darwin, Einstein, and Galileo, we sketch the place of advanced scientific thought within liberal learning and the humility that may be required for its study. Dr. McInerny delivered a talk in the final installment of the Beato Fra Angelica Fine Arts events entitled: “The Longing for Beauty in Our Age of Anxiety”. The talk discussed “the transcendent nature of beauty and the desperate need of our anxious, attention-fractured culture to experience this transcendence. As well as how more and more our culture is defined by the metaphor of the machine and the power associated with the machine. And what's ironic is that, while the machine is of our own making and its power is something we desire, we at the same time feel a desperate sense of unease and anxiety over the thing we have wrought. Like Victor Frankenstein, we feel haunted and entrapped by the creature we have made. Thus in our culture we are in great need of that which will enable us to transcend and overcome our own menacing mechanisms. Grace, of course, is the most important source of transcendence, but natural, artistic, and moral beauty are key sources of transcendence as well.”
Episode 76! This week I had the pleasure of chatting, again, to Rainbow Dad, Nicholas McInerny. We chat about the success of his podcast, the future for 'Rainbow Dads' and some of his work as a writer, including a play for Radio 4 starring Frances Barber. Nicolas is always a joy to chat with. Have a listen and let us brighten your day! Links below - http://www.mcinerny.co.uk https://twitter.com/nmcinerny https://twitter.com/Rainbowdads
This week I'm joined by the witty, warm and brilliant Mr Nicholas McInerny. Nicholas, along with the author David Ledain has put together a compelling set of podcasts where they chat to Gay and Bi men who had already become Dads but then had to come out to family, friends and their own children. Five men from very different backgrounds and with very different experiences and stories. I chat to Nicholas about his own coming out story and how he manoeuvred through the ups and downs of coming out later in life. We talk about his writing for theatre and radio and the influence pop culture has played on his life - Via Bowie and trips to the Burning Man Festival. I truly have loved listening to the podcasts and urge you, once you have listened to us chat, go over and check out/download/subscribe and rate 'Rainbow Dads'. I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation as much as I enjoyed recording it! Its available on all the usual platforms - I listen via Apple Podcast.
