In this special episode of Medical Affairs Unscripted, Peg Crowley-Nowick, PhD interviews three of Lumanity Medical Affairs Consulting PharmDs, Stephanie Wong, George Shyu, and Chris Maclafferty. They discuss the different paths they took from earning their degree to joining the pharmaceutical industry as well as the additional training and knowledge they felt were required to be successful in Medical Affairs. They breakdown the skills and expertise that PharmDs can bring to a Medical Affairs organization and how they chose to work in a consulting role rather than in a more typical role as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) or Medical Information Specialist. They wrap up by describing the different types of consulting work they find most fulfilling and how they “stay curious” and grow their careers.
Matteo Ottolini , Medical Science Liaison (MSL) at Bayer Pharmaceuticals discusses how he was able to land his first MSL role in the US as an international candidate Matteo shares….
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) in the pharmaceutical industry is a popular position for physicians who wish to leave clinical practice. This is true because it is possible to qualify for the job regardless of the extent of training (i.e., whether residency-trained or board certified, or not) or specialty; it does not require special certifications or degrees (beyond a medical degree); and it provides a moderate amount of flexibility to work part of the time from home. However, it often involves traveling to meet with clients up to 60% of the time. John created a six-lesson course called How to Secure a Career as a Medical Science Liaison for the Nonclinical Career Academy. And he has taken excerpts from that course for PNC Podcast Episodes 276 and 277. By presenting the pros and cons, and an overview of the steps you can take to prepare for a job as an MSL, you will gain a much deeper understanding of the position and whether to pursue it. He also goes into detail about common tactics used to find a nonclinical career, including converting your CV to a resumé, engaging mentors; networking effectively, creating a LinkedIn profile, and identifying professional organizations that can hasten your progress. With the pharmaceutical industry becoming more and more heavily competitive, knowing how to conduct an insightful and multidimensional assessment of your Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team to identify gaps and hire the right MSLs to not only accelerate a corporate competitive advantage, but also to cultivate the natural diversity of a proper team for internal peer-to-peer development and external stakeholder rapport is more critical than ever. With an extensive and influential career in Medical Affairs (MA) at Sanofi Pasteur spanning more than two decades starting in the field and now the current Senior Director of the Field Medical Team in the Vaccines therapeutic unit at Sanofi Pasteur, Christina Tankersley, PharmD has mastered the know-how of building, training, and maturing a diverse, multidisciplinary MSL team. She joins Dr. Peg Crowley-Nowick, Founder and President of Zipher Medical Affairs on this inaugural podcast of the second season of Zipher Medical Affairs Unscripted to share her invaluable experience on how to intentionally identify key diversities needed in constructing a balanced and symbiotic MSL team, and how to overcome the challenges of unifying team members across the now common virtual office settings. Dr. Crowley-Nowick also draws on Dr. Tankersley's vast experience and innate propensity for coaching and mentoring to discuss the possible pitfalls of the industry's current trend in condensing the onboarding experience for MSLs and potentially driving MSLs into the field prematurely and asks her to expound on her innovative approach for onboarding. Lastly, Dr. Tankersley characterizes the fundamental cornerstone of an MSL development plan and fostering actions to support that vision.
During pharmacy school, the husband of one of Elaine's professors was a Medical Science Liaison (MSL). She jumped at the opportunity to meet him and asked questions about his role, fellowships, and industry in general—and that important conversation solidified her decision to pursue an industry career. One of the greatest pieces of advice that Elaine offers listeners is to always "raise your hand." She launched her career working for a small company, and as long as she was meeting her goals, she would often volunteer for new projects and opportunities that helped her grow personally and professionally. Tune in to learn how to develop industry "soft skills" not taught in pharmacy school, an overview of field medical, how to decide between a small or large company, and much more. In this episode, we interview Dr. Danyelle Martin, a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) at Moderna, in order to learn more about the what, how, and future of mRNA-based therapeutics, and what impact it can have on healthcare and healthcare professionals in general. Key Concepts Moderna has a “Research Engine” proprietary service that takes an mRNA idea from a web-based digital designer, to a digital ordering system, and finally to a production facility where mRNA constructs are synthesized and quality tested. Pharmaceutics play a big role in the formulation of mRNA particles. Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) play an important role for stability and delivery of mRNA cargo. After LNPs and mRNA are co-formulated, the product is purified, filtered, frozen, and subjected to a series of good manufacturing practice (GMP) tests to ensure product quality. COVID-19 vaccines are a small glimpse into the potential future of mRNA-based therapeutics. Moderna's pipeline includes mRNA vaccines for other viruses (including RSV, influenza, Zika and CMV) as well as therapeutics for non-viral diseases (including a personalized cancer vaccine and a VEGF-A mRNA molecule for myocardial ischemia).

Martijn Bijker was born and raised in the Netherlands where he did both his Masters and PhD in immuno-oncology. In 2007 he moved to Sydney, Australia to start his postdoc at the Garvan Institute and 4 years later transitioned to the pharmaceutical industry where he consecutively worked as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) with Abbott, AbbVie and Amgen. He quickly realised that like him, many other PhD/Postdocs struggled to find good information to prepare themselves for the transition from academia into the pharmaceutical industry. This inspired Martijn to found his own career and coaching company.
