Meet Rich Vaill,  as he shares his leadership journey beginning with the US Naval Academy and his career as Marine Officer.  He is a strong advocate for hiring VETS and has some persuasive arguments for why VETS make great employees– loyalty, discipline, mission-oriented, and fierce integrity. Helping him during the pandemic was his Marine mantra:  Improvise, Adapt and Overcome!  He describes himself as “decisive” leader who stands by his decisions, takes accountability for missteps, but is confident making decisions on the basis of available resources, and moving forward with the mission.Rich shares that the service academies completely immerse you in service and leadership where you “learn, apply and correct.”  The Service Academies’ emphasis on training, preparing for the unknown and unexpected, and the commitment to service of the interest of your country is at the forefront.  One of the biggest lessons he learned is “take care of your people.”  Train your people, equip them with the resources they need to succeed, and then let them perform, don’t micromanage.  Rich learned in his command posts that leadership encompasses understanding and managing the “whole person”– dealing with marital, financial, other concerns of his team. His military experience served him well his roles of civilian leadership.  Key qualities and principles that carry over:  proficiency, communication, seeking self-improvement, endurance, enthusiasm ,and  knowing yourself.  Rich seeks to embody what he learned in the military: “integrity, discipline, lead by example, be professional, respectful, humble, stay in shape, and shine your shoes.”   Rich, like many of the transformative leaders we have been speaking to on our podcasts is devoted to giving back.  He has a passion for assisting veterans successfully transition into civilian careers.  He even returned to active duty service to be the New Jersey’s  “Hometown Link” in the Marine for Life” program. He has some words of wisdom for hiring managers to uncover humble veteran’s experiences to fully understand the unique qualities they can bring to the job. DISCLAIMER – No information contained in this Podcast or on this Website shall constitute financial, investment, legal and/or other professional advice and that no professional relationship of any kind is created between you and podcast host, the guests or Clark Hill PLC. In 1964, at the age of 51, Richard E. Harris became the first Black reporter at The Arizona Republic.  His tenure came during a momentous and tumultuous period in our nation’s history. The year before, thousands were arrested while protesting segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. Among them was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who would deliver his famed “I Have A Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that same year.  President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. The following year, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  Phoenix was segregated at the time. Years of redlining and restrictive covenants had left their mark on the city. Harris was assigned to cover poverty in the city, telling the story of some of its most vulnerable citizens.  Later in life, Harris wrote that he “detested some of the paper’s ultra-conservative editorials and stories slanted in favor of the Establishment.” Still, he was proud of his tenure there and what he accomplished. In his 2004 autobiography "The American Odyssey of a Black Journalist," Harris wrote that he “proved to be as capable as most white peers and soon found news stories outside the stereotype bounds.” Today, Harris is remembered by those who came after him as a modest, humble man.  “And what I’d like to say about Richard Harris is that, you know, he wasn’t a physically large guy. But he had very broad shoulders, figuratively speaking,” said Art Gissendaner, who worked as the sole Black reporter at The Republic a decade after Harris. “And something I tell a lot of young people now is that where we are now, we all are standing on someone else’s shoulders.” In this week’s episode of Valley 101, a podcast from The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, Executive Editor Greg Burton explores the story of Harris’ life and legacy.

As an industry who prides ourselves on serving clients and satisfying their every want and need, why are we lacking so drastically in this all-important area? Richard Watts, Author of Entitlemania: How Not to Spoil Your Kids, and What to Do if You Have Entitlemania is an epidemic. Well-intentioned parents across the country are enabling a “me” generation of children who lack the wisdom and self-satisfaction of accomplishment that only struggle and adversity can bring. Entitlemania is a state of mind where children believe they should have anything they want, while also believing they shouldn’t have to make an effort to get it. Richard’s groundbreaking book sheds important light on an increasingly pervasive social trend affecting children at every age – and at every income bracket. The big takeaway for parents: You may have to let your children fail so they can learn how to succeed. Learn how to help your children become more, by doing less. ICFF and Coming to America This is the third and final show coming from ICFF NYC. Nick chats with CEO Richard Munao of NAU Designs and designer Kenneth Cobonpue. As Nick walked through ICFF, these two booths stood out to him. Let's find out why. Meet Richard, Meet Nau Nau (pronounced n-o-w) is a brand new collection, but Richard has been in the industry for around 30 years. He got his start as a cabinet maker. Richard has been to ICFF before, but only as an onlooker to observe to study how the show works. This year though was Nau's international debut and their first foot into the U.S. Richard's hopes to champion Australian design and bring his passion to the world. Nau makes tables, sofas, beds, and chairs out of walnut, oak, and ash, and are testing Australian timbers as well, to see how well they would work exported. Right now the most difficult part of launching Nau is navigating the different distribution network in the United States compared to Australia, and working out who is who in this large country of 50 states. Richard is figuring out the best places to market and ICFF is definitely one of them. He worked with Australian designers and photographers to design their stand and photograph it to make it stand out. Nau's collection integrates an acoustic material to create a quieter environment and weaved screen-like walls which light can pass through.  Their aesthetic creates organic shapes opposed to rectilinear modernity; it's created to be a visual piece within a room. Originally the products were planned to be for the workplace but wineries and jewelry stores have reached out to use them to create intimate spaces. They would also be great in a coffee shop or an airport. Learn more at naudesign.com.au Kenneth Cobonpue Kenneth Cobonpue creates unique handmade furniture that is inspired by nature. He uses sustainable materials, organic fibers and recycled polyethylene for outdoor pieces. He creates indoor and outdoor furniture, lighting, installations, and art. He's been doing this professionally for 15 years but really, it all started when he was just a kid. Kenneth grew up in the Philippines where his mother was a furniture designer from the back of their home. He grew up surrounded by craftsmen who taught him how to use the materials so he could build his own toys and bridges. Later, Kenneth left for Pratt in NYC to study industrial design and then returned to the Philippines to design his own collections, with the same people who made his mother's furniture. His first piece is the yin and yang, a simple cubic chair, which he designed with an open weave for air to flow through littleview obstruction. He has developed this open weave aesthetic and now uses it in all of his products. Kenneth's inspiration comes from nature; if you look through a tree you can see the light passing through its branches and leaves, just like in his frames. ICFF is where Kenneth and his team meet clients, retailers, new designers, and the press. Also, it is where they introduce their new products into the American market. Learn more at kennethcobonpue.com Porcelanosa has started a new trend in hospitality: taking carpet out of rooms and people are LOVING it.
