So oder so ähnlich kennen wir sie alle, die Online Coaches. Etwas darüber in allen Belangen und in zu kleinen Anzügen dafür umso größeren Autos mit noch größeren Versprechen. Patrick kennt aber nun jemanden mit positiven Erfahrungen nach einem solchen Coaching. Ist das doch alles etwas besser als wir alle denken? Naja, wenn man eh gerade beim Fake ist, kann man sich auch den blauen Haken auf Instagram kaufen, oder? So in etwa klingen manchmal Hochzeitsgäste, wenn sie fest davon überzeugt sind, Dinge besser zu wissen als die Profis vor Ort. 
Warum ist das so und warum gibt es das so oft? Wie geht man damit um?
Wenn es für diese Situation nur eine KI gäbe, wären wir sehr glücklich. In etwa so glücklich wie Dennis jetzt, denn er hat nun endlich mit Neurapix Instant angefangen. Die Festplatten laufen voll und Neurapix scheint die letzte Hoffnung zu sein, in etwa so wie wir für euch, denn noch sind wir nicht in der Sommerpause wie die anderen Podcasts. So in etwa kann man die Folge diese Woche beschreiben, denn zuerst streikte die Technik und dann drückte die Zeit. Zusätzlich hatten Patrick und Dennis sich so viel zu erzählen, dass regelmäßig in den Smalltalk abgedriftet wurde. Nicht ganz Themen konform, aber es tat gut sich einfach mal zu unterhalten. Was für eine Woche war das denn? 
Die letzte Folge musste ausfallen, denn die Woche war voll mit Jobs und so konnten wir wirklich nicht einen Tag finden, an dem wir auch nur ein kleines Fenster gehabt hätten. Sowas ist natürlich wirtschaftlich schön, aber warum man gerade in so Phasen ganz besonders aufpassen muss, erzählt heute Dennis ganz genau.

Wer seine Bilder offen zeigt und ins Internet stellt, wird nicht drumherum kommen, irgendwann auch mal von Kritik heimgesucht zu werden. Was ist Kritik, die ok ist und wann ist uns das zu doof? Ist Kritik äußern überhaupt ok? Wie gehen wir damit um? Diesem Thema gehen wir heute auf den Grund und auch, warum einen das so trifft, wenn Bilder die für Person A waren, Person B aus dem Internet nicht gefallen? Zusätzlich gibt es natürlich wieder kleine Anekdoten aus dem Alltag eines Fotografen und die Erkenntnis, dass es so hin und wieder doch auch auf die kleinen Dinge ankommt, die so in der Fototasche rumliegen. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Learning from Matching Co-Founders for an AI-Alignment Startup, published by Patrick Gruban on September 24, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. At EAG London in April 2022, Beth Barnes was looking for potential founders of a new startup that could provide better human data for AI Alignment research. Six of the people interested organised a self-run multi-step co-founder matching process over 7 weeks. It resulted in identifying 2 potential co-founders that have been exploring the founding opportunity in detail. In this post, we, as part of the group, will describe the process of the co-founder matching and the learnings based on a survey of participants. The initial idea The Future Fund's Project Ideas Competition this March awarded prizes to Marc-Everin Carauleanu and Beth Barnes for suggestions regarding human data for AI Alignment. Beth met with several people at EAG London in April and provided a five-page Google Doc writeup after the conference to everyone who had expressed interest and had spoken with her. The email doubled as an introduction. Coordinating the process As Beth implicitly had handed over the idea to the group to self-coordinate, I (Patrick), as one of the participants, set up a Google Form to gauge the level of interest. Everyone was able to see the results. Additionally, I set up a channel in the EA Entrepreneur Slack for further discussion. Based on the interest expressed as well as the time zones of the participants, I scheduled a group call. We decided to ask Charity Entrepreneurship (CE) if they could facilitate the process as they have several years of experience in finding and matching co-founders for new EA startups. In a call, Joey Savoie provided helpful guidance, sharing documents and later also inviting the team to use the CE offices for a joint weekend at the end of the process. Although they didn't have the capacity to facilitate the process, their resources were very helpful for us in setting up our own process. Steps in the matching process With the input of CE, a group of six people decided to start a matching process that would end in an in-person meeting in June, where the final decision on the co-founders would be made. We think the process length would have been excessive had many participants not been available before mid-June. Questions for co-founders The group took the document 50 Questions to Explore with a Potential Co-Founder, removing some and adding additional questions. Once everybody had commented on the document, it was finalized, and everyone filled it out for themselves and shared it. Discussing questions for co-founders in 1:1s All participants then set up 1:1 calls with each of the other participants where they discussed the potential compatibility and roles each could take on in the new organisation. No co-founder pair ruled itself out after this process. 5 weeks of online work In order to bridge the time until an in-person meeting was feasible, a process was set up where each participant worked with one of the other five for 45 minutes each week. As we didn't have any assignments prepared, we came up with a process where each pair would create an assignment that another pair would have to work on in the following week. This is: Mastermind Groups: A new Peer Support Format to help EAs aim higher, published by Patrick Gruban on May 31, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL/DR: Mastermind groups consist of a small number of people (usually 4-6), meeting regularly over a long time and supporting each other with their goals. Members might provide each other with ideas, critical feedback, encouragement or accountability. The concept is widely used in the solo entrepreneur community but, to our knowledge, has not found adoption within EA yet. We believe mastermind groups could be a valuable addition to existing mentoring and coaching formats within EA. We are considering launching a Mastermind matching service for EAs - click here to indicate your interest. Aiming high and failing can hurt Last November, 80k published Be more ambitious: a rational case for dreaming big (if you want to do good) centring around this main theme: In short, our advice is to do as much as you can to set up your life so that you can afford to fail, and then aim as high as you can. As a slogan: limit downsides, target upsides. This seems like a helpful framing for thinking about how we can increase the expected impact of the Effective Altruism community. At the same time, this can be very demanding for individuals. If you're looking for a job and are ambitious in terms of impact, that can lead to many rejections, which can hurt. As one applicant to 20 EA jobs with 0 offers wrote, it can feel as if EA orgs were saying: We are so talent constrained. (20 applications later) . Yeah, when we said that we need people, we meant capable people. Not you. You suck. "Rejection hurts, and that hurt matters." wrote the therapist Dystar Eld about job rejections in EA, and Max Görlitz asks, "How do we create a culture of ambition without deteriorating the community's mental health?" citing Sam Bankman-Fried, who more broadly talks about rejection on the 80K podcast: So I think there are really compelling reasons to think that the “optimal strategy” to follow is one that probably fails — but if it doesn't fail, it's great. But as a community, what that would imply is this weird thing where you almost celebrate cases where someone completely craps out — where things end up nowhere close to what they could have been — because that's what the majority of well-played strategies should end with. How do we take care of the majority of people who aim high and fail repeatedly? Either applying for jobs, funding, starting organisations, doing independent research, working in non-EA organisations where they try to make a difference, running for election and many other fields? As a serial entrepreneur, I (Patrick) had to deal with high ambitions crashing down from time to time, costing money and having large emotional tolls. I saw some of my peers give up after the blows and take on regular jobs. One of the most important elements for getting through these phases was having a support group of people I could talk to in similar positions. Mastermind groups The concept of mastermind groups was first described almost 100 years ago in "The Law of Success" by Napoleon Hill. After interviewing many successful people of his time like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller, Hill observed that many were in peer-to-peer mentoring groups. Mastermind groups today come in many shapes and sizes. Typical they Consist of a fixed group of 2-10 participants, although 4-6 seems more usual Run 1-2 hours either weekly, bi-weekly or monthly Are structured so that one or more participants per session can share something and ask for feedback, recommendations or just moral support. Sometimes people share their next goals. Can be self-organised and free, cost a one-time signup fee or between $500 and $100.000 per year for entrepreneurs Exist as long as participa...
