For decades, CAL FIRE firefighters have been forced to work 72-hour workweeks despite the standard 56 implemented at many departments around the state. This has led to retention issues for the department and caused harm to CAL FIRE firefighters' families, physical health, and mental health. Governor Gavin Newsom has included the 66-hour workweek in his proposed 2024 budget, which is currently under consideration by the California Legislature, bringing Local 2881 one step closer to parity. On this edition of CPF Fire Wire, CPF President Brian Rice meets with CAL FIRE Local 2881 President Tim Edwards to discuss their ongoing fight to bring the hours in their workweek closer to the rest of the California fire service. The CPF membership has stood in solidarity with Local 2881 in this fight, and will need to continue to do so to help them get to 56.

In this conversation, we will look at the research examining methods of safe sedation by Advanced Paramedic Practitioners within London and examine the research published on this looking at sedation of Acute Behavioural Disturbance (ABD). We will examine; what the retrospective cohort study of pre-hospital agitation management showed regarding the sedation of the ABD patient. Also, the origins of ABD according to the paper, the Sedation Assessment Tool used to measure pre- and post-intervention, the approaches that senior clinicians can take to sedate patients and more. To do this I have Tim Edwards with me, Tim is a Consultant Paramedic with the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust and a visiting lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire. Tim has been a paramedic since 2000 and has undertaken various roles including working as a flight paramedic, senior lecturer, and advanced paramedic practitioner and is currently working as a Consultant Paramedic in London. Each week BusinessDesk and the NZ Herald's Cooking the Books podcast tackles a different money problem. Today, it's how index investing changed the game, and what's next. Hosted by Frances Cook. Now don't tell me you forgot it was our anniversary. It's a big one too: 30 years, the pearl anniversary. What's it the anniversary of? Well, I'm glad you asked. January 29 marked 30 years of the world's longest-surviving exchange-traded fund, Standard & Poor's Depository Receipt, mostly known by the acronym SPDR, or as the “spider”. It's now one of the world's largest funds. A little closer to home, March 3 this year marked 20 years since the Standard & Poors NZX50 was launched. That's the china anniversary, for those paying attention. Jokes aside, index investing has been huge for letting the little guy into the market, allowing them to invest in a wide range of companies with less effort. The rewards, without as much risk. But some things have changed over the past few decades. For the latest podcast, I talked to Tim Edwards, S&P's global head of index investment strategy. If you have a question about this podcast, or a question you'd like answered in the next one, come and talk to me about it. Leaders Live is our studio talk show on hot button issues facing the industry, featuring interviews with leaders from across and beyond sport. In this episode, we are examining the creator economy – What is it, how can we utilise it, and what does sport really need to understand about how the online influencer world works? To provide answers to our burning questions this month: First we have IMG Media President Adam Kelly, who gives a state of the nation verdict on the sports industry and reviews the key themes emerging from Leaders Week in September. We are then joined by Victor Bengtsson, Head of Content for creator collective The Sidemen, to explore what the rise of the creator economy means for the sports industry and sports content. Last (but certainly not least) we have Tim Edwards, who looks after athlete partnerships at TikTok, offering a glimpse into how the platform is helping athletes become creators, where the crossovers are between sport and the online creator community and helping to explain how and where brands can get involved in a credible way.To watch the broadcast in video, please visit https://www.linkedin.com/posts/leaders-executive-sport-ltd-_leaders-live-the-creator-economy-and-how-activity-6988860397030113280-ulRM?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

Crit Thomas, global market strategist at Touchstone Investments, acknowledges that he is giving potentially controversial advice in suggesting that with interest rates still rising investors might look to buy longer-duration bonds, but he thinks that rates will peak soon and that investors who stay completely focused on short-term bonds will find themselves with significant re-investment risk -- the chance that they will be looking at lesser returns when bonds mature -- in a year or two. While he is not going way up the maturity scale, Thomas is looking to position both fixed-income and equity portfolios for a recovering and changed market and economy in the next two years. Also on the show, Chuck discusses the relative success -- or lack thereof -- that active managers have had in beating their passive benchmarks this year with Tim Edwards, managing director of index investment strategy, S&P Dow Jones Indices, discusses the rising percentage of Americans with long-term credit-card debt -- at just the wrong time to have it -- with Ted Rossman of CreditCards.com, and these strange times we are living through call for some "Weird Financial News" with stories about Elon Musk, donkey penises and more.
Active managers have, historically, had a tough time beating their benchmarks. Yet this year may prove to be an exception; nearly half of large-cap managers are outperforming. Can they keep it up? And can anything really reverse the massive migration to passive investing at this point? On this episode, Eric Balchunas and Joel Weber speak with Tim Edwards of S&P Dow Jones Indices, who oversees the SPIVA report, aka the ultimate active vs. passive scorecard. With his just-published latest installment in hand, Edwards talks through where active is doing well (and not so well), the role of fees in returns, and why bond funds tend to better than stock funds.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
