This week, I sit down with Center for Metal Arts Executive Director, Patrick Quinn, to talk about his mission in helping preserve the rich steel history in Johnstown, Pa through research and education. As a blacksmith, Pat feels he has a duty to help keep the trade alive. His goal with Center for Metal Arts is to bring new faces into the world and further educate the ones who already have a strong foundation with forging metal. Starting out as a traditional artist with a focus in drawing, Pat found his way in front of a Power Hammer just by chance and now he spends his days educating the others on the fundamentals on manipulating hot steel with the swing of a hammer. Center for Metal Arts is a 501c3 that offers beginner through advanced forging workshops in their state-of-the-art facilities and this week, Pat stops by to tell me all about CMA, his passion for art and blacksmithing, and more. EP 149 with Pat Quinn of the Center For Metal Arts joins us this week with some history of his life as a blacksmith and getting into the Center For Metal Arts. @abstract_blacksmith and @rainydayforge sit down with Pat for a couple hours and only brush the surface of things we can learn from Pat. This man is extremely well known and respected in the blacksmith for a good reason. When I sat down to chat with Jenny Foulkes, it soon became apparent (at least in my mind) that we were jewelry sisters from another mother. From the way we approach a design to our cabinets of curiosities filled with tiny sacred objects collected through the years, we seemed to have more in common than we didn't. Jenny sees her jewelry as sacred objects to be worn, loved, and passed down… and I love this sentiment.  Jenny's work is elegant and at the same time earthy appealing to something deeper inside. Something perhaps forgotten or from another time. And of course her use of gold, texture, rich patina, and beautiful gemstones makes my heart beat a little faster. I really loved this conversation with Jenny. She's open about her challenges with balancing motherhood with the demands of business and show travel, the hurdles of social media and marketing, the role community has played in her success as an artist, ADHD and the creative mind, and the work of building a loyal fan base. Bio... Jenny Foulkes is a metalsmith, artist, jeweler and mother. Daughter of a painter father and psychologist mother, she grew up in the mountains edging Los Angeles, California. As a child, Jenny was always drawn to the tinier, more contained objects of art, be it man-made or natural. She spent much of her childhood scanning the world around her for rocks, insects, bird nests, skulls, etc. This attention to detail eventually led her to jewelry making. Spending many years creating and selling beaded jewelry, Jenny yearned to learn more. In her mid-20's she moved from Los Angeles to Portland, Oregon to attend Oregon College of Art and Craft and in 2011 graduated with a BFA in Metal Arts. Jenny has spent the years since finding her voice as an artist and building an inventory, all the while being a full-time mother. She sells her work at fine art and craft shows and online. Jenny is driven to make work that is unusual and elegant. By merging darkened silver with gold she creates color and dimension. Each piece of jewelry is thoughtfully handmade and one of a kind. Combining unexpected elements such as faceted precious gemstones with organically textured darkened silver, she is able to create a feeling that is both fine and precious, yet earthy and warm. https://Art2Life.com - Silvia Poloto emigrated to the United States in the 90s. It was here that she stumbled on a knack for art—and it changed the trajectory of her life. When Silvia was finishing her Master's Degree, she started cutting out pieces from magazines and making collages. She started working with metal. Looking to learn more, she signed up for a class called “Metal Arts,” only to realize it was a jewelry-making class.  She spent her time in class creating small sculptures with the material. Her instructor was fascinated. She shared her art with him and he was impressed, convinced she had an art degree instead of one in engineering. That's when she realized she might have a future in art.  She taught herself metalworking, painting and photography. With every subsequent work of art, her style evolves. Once I again I made the trek to the incredible Center for Metal Arts in Johnstown, PA to teach a Weekend Workshop. I was greeted by my friend Pat Quinn, the Executive Director of CMA and I had another inspiring time there. How could you not? Every time I come down I see the forward momentum Pat and his team are making, restoring giant utility hammers, creating new curriculum, and uncovering buried areas of the buildings to expose visitors to this incredible Campus. We had a great Episode early in the morning over coffee recapping what's new and what's to come. September 16th is the 2023 Cabria Iron Conference where the public will be able to have the rare experience of watching a Hammer Team forge giant steel elements designed by an artist. This year Pete Mattila, a Tasmanian Blacksmith and Sculptor will be leading the team and the pieces forged, will be used in a Masterclass the next week for a large installation. This is an amazing opportunity to see giant hammers running with a skilled team of Craftsmen running them. Pat is so driven and forward thinking. Jesse Savage is back and on the way to Center of Metal Arts to teach a weekend workshop with his wife Carrie. We always have a good time talking about blacksmithing, history and what we've been up to. We also remembered my teacher Uri Hofi, who was a big influence on a lot of people's lives. We talked about his late in life start in blacksmithing, his teachers, students and legacy and what defines his hammer style. I'm so honored to have returned to Center for Metal Arts to kick off the 2023 Curriculum with my Forged Friction Folder weekend workshop. Patrick Quinn, the Director of CMA has become a good friend and a leader in the furthering of Forging Education in the United States. I brought a mic and we recorded an episode in his office. I'd say Jesse Savage is man from another time.. His knowledge on Anvils, forging and history is impressive. I had the distinct honor of returning to the Center for Metal Arts in Johnstown PA to teach a weekend work shop and I brought a microphone to have another conversation with CMA's Executive Director Pat Quinn. I was lucky enough to catch John Williams after finishing up a week long Tong Making class he taught with Pat. I've known John for years online and it was great to finally meet after years of admiring him as an extraordinary blacksmith, toolmaker and craftsman. They talked about teaching together, the direction of forging education and a how we see this relatively new role as creating forging education for something that was never considered recreational up until recent history.September 17th CMA is hosting the Cambria Iron Conference and this year the featured demonstrator Zack Noble will be working with the CMA team to forge a giant sculpture on the historic power hammer. We talked about the lead up to the Conference and the big upgrades since the last time I was down at CMA. I met Henry Hyde of Hyde Handmade Knives at The Center for Metal Arts last spring and he was humble, soft spoken when he wanted to be and confident and hilarious too. Always fast with a clever and timely joke, and very reverential towards his hosts, his cohorts and his teachers Henry forged with intention.  Henry is an incredibly talented Bladesmith who found his way into knifemaking after being miserable in the restaurant world. It's very rare when I get to record a podcast from anywhere but my shop; I'm usually speaking to a guest remotely from the comfort of my Jeep recording booth. I had the honor of teaching a weekend workshop at The Center for Metal Arts in Johnstown, PA and after having the pleasure of podcasting with CMA's executive director Pat Quinn before, it seemed appropriate to bring a travel mic and get some new perspective. What a great opportunity! We recorded early in the  morning, right before I started teaching the second day of forging a ‘Turnstile Friction Folder' workshop. Spending time with Pat and seeing his careful and purposeful approach for the direction for the school was exciting and overwhelming. The campus is an incredible place that was the former Cambria Iron Co., housing enormous 3000lb Chambersburg Utility hammers. We talked about Pat's restoration and what they plan on doing with these massive hammers. The one currently restored hammer is worked with a 5 person team; the hammer is so difficult and expensive to run that a smaller hammer with identical controls was installed to practice the choreography of team forging on smaller scale models before moving up in scale. We also talked about Johnstown and the historic flood that carried houses away into the stone bridge within sight of the school; and what happened recently when the fire department told Pat that the river was going to flood again.I am so glad I got to see what Pat, Dan Neville and the CMA team are doing. Very exciting to see; especially how the history of Cambria Iron Co. is clearly influencing Pat's work. Arguably one of America’s best bladesmiths, Salem Straub of Promethian Knives, didn’t have it easy. The journey towards the man he is today came through personal growth during turbulent times where it was difficult to see a very positive future. Victory came though hard work, focus and the kindness of others. Salem is synonymous with forging very tight Damascus knives that feel flawless. Salem’s damascus patterns is evocative of what you see through a kaleidoscope and has the perfect repetitions of textiles. His use of forge welding a contrasting pattern along the belly of the blade, that borders the bottom of his “compound grind”, is a design decision that makes the “S Grind” not an after thought, but as integral to the knife as the blade cascading out of the bolster. This is week I have a returning guest, Ellen Durkan, from Delaware.  She’s an incredibly talented artist blacksmith that has a line of metal dresses called Forged Fashion.  She is also an adjunct professor at the Delaware College of Art and Design.  She will be a demonstrator at the upcoming CBA Spring Conference and that also happens to be the sponsor for today’s episode.  This year is their 40th anniversary, so it’s a big event and Dennis Dusek and his conference crew have been diligently planning for the past 6 months.  They have a talented line up of demonstrators, Zeevik Gottlieb, Lynda Metcalfe, Ellen Durkan, Haley Woodword, Colby Brinkman, David Lisch. What We Talked About Ellen is teaching drawing, 3D design and sculpture as an adjunct professor at the Delaware College of Art and Design. Besides teaching at the college, she is preparing for a performance style runway show of her iron fashion dresses in November. She is planning on having 15 to 20 models as well as a few aerial performers. Ellen tells us about her photo shoots with a professional photographer who is her friend, Joe, and how they come up with ideas for photographing Ellen’s iron fashion pieces. Ellen is teaching and demonstrating more for 2018, she’ll be in California, New Jersey, Virginia, New York and Buenos Aires Argentina. Ellen has an exhibition of her large-scale drawings that will be held at the Delaware Art Museum Also, she was recently awarded a $6000 art grant to help her put on her forged fashion runway show in November. The grant came from the Delaware Division of the Arts.  Pete Braspenninx is an artist blacksmith living in Cazenovia, Michigan and is the owner of Phyre Forge.  He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design in 2004 with a focus in ceramics and jewelry.  Since being exposed to the blacksmith craft 14 years ago he has focused on transforming line into a continuous form with meticulous traditional joinery.  He has started a body of work called “Calculating Infinity” and there are 25 pieces in this body of work.  We talk about the what, why and how he calculates infinity.  We also talk about his upcoming demonstration at the 40th Quad State Round up in Troy, Ohio. Please visit the website, www.sofablacksmiths.org to access the online registration form and other details.   What We Talked About Pete has been attending the SOFA Quad Round ups for the last 12 years and this year he will be a demonstrator on Friday night. He will forge one of his calculating infinity pieces. His body of work called “Calculating Infinity” is a technical assignment for himself. To be able to take one piece of stock and to create it into form. Through completing 25 pieces in the series, Pete says he has gained layout and precise measurement skills. While Pete was finishing his art degree at the University of Michigan he visited a local blacksmith’s shop, Scott Lankton, and watched him demonstrate forging on a big Nazel power hammer. Pete was excited to learn more about the craft, so he got a job with another local smith working in the paint booth, and watching the forging that happened in the shop. Pete recalls his first Quad State Conference when Peter Ross gave a lock lecture and when he met Tom Clark. After college Pete worked in an ornamental fab shop for 12 years. They made railings and other architectural work.  His 30’ x 40’ pole barn shop consists around a coal forge, anvil and one Little Giant 50 lb power hammer. Stuart Shirley is a college student at the Colorado School of Mines, he is obtaining a 4 year degree from the Colorado School of Mines in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.  Currently, as part of pursuing his degree, he is completing an internship at the Center for Metal Arts in Florida New York.  What We Talked About Stuart’s interest in blacksmithing started in high school. His welding instructor offered to help Stuart build a forge of his own if Stuart agreed to build two forges, one for the school and one for him to keep. Stuart’s forge is called Great Owl Forge and he has both coal and gas forges there. He also has a treadle hammer (he built in high school), an anvil, horizontal bandsaw, oxy/acetylene set up and a utility pneumatic power hammer. While he has been working at the Center for Metal Arts as an intern, Stuart has become familiar with the 4 power hammers CMA has in the shop. They have a Ritter, Falcon, Anyang and a Nazel. Steel production and failure analysis is what interests Stuart the most and will continue to study that in his next internship with New Corp in their hot mill. As an intern at CMA, Stuart started off cleaning and organizing the shop by building racks. Patrick Quinn (program developer and instructor at CMA) and Kyle Martin are teaching him how to use a mill, a lathe for machining and how to build jigs for production work. In his second and third months, Stuart has made a total of 58 sets of tongs for the classes CMA holds every weekend. When Stuart makes 10 sets of tongs, Patrick had made a deal that Stuart keeps one pair, Patrick keeps a pair and 8 sets stay in the shop for class use. Patrick and Stuart set aside Monday and Tuesday nights to have weekly meetings and focused forging sessions. Other than that, Stuart works from 9 am to 5 pm every day in the shop. Stuart has been able to attend the weekend classes that CMA offers on the weekends. One of them being the Seth Gould Forge a Hacksaw class. Stuart will be attending his next internship right after his CMA internship, it is with New Corp and he will be working in the hot mill steel production department. In this informative podcast, Lindsay Masters, Bainbridge Arts & Crafts' Executive Director, and Mark Nichols, Bainbridge Artist Resource Network's Executive Director, tell us about each of their organizations and how their missions are synergistic. Their collaboration will be exemplified during the month of November, when BAC will serve as the public gallery for 42 artists who have honed their artistic skills at BARN. Some have never exhibited their artwork in public before, but all have met the standards of the jury for this exhibition. Listen here as Lindsay describes the jurying process for the beautiful BAC gallery and tells us about the many additional offerings and services provided by BAC, from art classes for seniors and opportunities for local BI students to demonstrations at nursing homes, on ferries, and beyond. An opening reception for an exhibition of advanced student work in Jewelry and Metal Arts focused on the exploration and discovery of different materials, forms and artistic styles.

Patrick Quinn is a full-time blacksmith in Florida, New York.  He graduated with honors in sculpture from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University continued his education with Southern Illinois University to pursue his masters.  He is now a teacher at the Center for Metals Arts. What We Talked About While completing his bachelor’s degree at Alfred university he focused in fabrication of sheet metal work and hollow forms. When Patrick graduated he moved to Vermont for a job at a production forge company as a welder, but the company only had an opening for a blacksmith to mainly work on the power hammer and hydraulic bending machines pumping out production pieces, so he was hired for that position. While Patrick was working at the production forge he rented a local barn to have his own studio space to practice his hand forging. Eventually, he quit his job and ran his own blacksmith business in Vermont for a few years. This led him to some big stainless steel jobs to complete in NYC during the winters.  This allowed him to live in Vermont in the summertime to work on his portfolio. In 2011, he applied to a graduate program at Southern Illinois University, a 3-year program. He now works for the Center for Metal Arts as the blacksmith program director and class instructor. The school is in Florida, New York an hour north of New York City. The school offers 1 to 4-day classes for all levels of blacksmithing, as well as silver soldering, enameling, and jewelry making. While most of the classes he teaches are on the weekends, he uses the weekdays to make private commissioned work. Most of the commissions are architectural in nature, and he will add his sculptural designs to them. Patrick will be part of the 2016 ABANA conference demonstrations, he is one of the team of 12 working with Jake James on a collaborative sculpture. The school’s shop consists of milling machine, a lathe, 5 welding machines, bandsaws, platen and fabrication layout tables, 3 power hammers, 8 forging stations complete with anvils, forges, and hand tools. Patrick likes to read books that are technique based for forging, open die forging, tool making and older books about crafts. When asked who would he spend a day with learning from – he answered to work with the guys at the Hay Budden Anvil making shop in Brooklyn in the early 1900’s.
