In this week's episode of Katie's Crib, we are joined by Sara Olsher, the founder of Mighty + Bright. The mother and cancer survivor shares her joinery of developing a company that helps families through hard things like divorce, cancer, and other major changes (using calendars, daily charts and books). Sara first explains that led her to start her company, opening up about her personal experiences with divorce and cancer. She then goes into the creation of her coparenting calendars, and how it helped her daughter understand family adjustments after divorce. The illustrator even elaborates how she first tried to explain her cancer diagnosis to her daughter, and how her mission to find an appropriate book to help with the conversation influenced her to develop additional content on general difficult conversations. Plus, are you a parent who is nervous about discussing divorce or a parent's illness with your children? Sara givers her insight on why it is important to disclose such info to your children in this special episode. Tired of buying new everything when your kid inevitably misplaces it? It's natural for kids to be a little disorganized, but if your kid is losing things left and right, there are some simple steps you can take. A member of our Facebook group asked: Any suggestions for the kid who loses everything? My son is 9. He lost three sweatshirts in the two months he was in in-person school, a tennis racquet at tennis camp, baseball glove at baseball practice, shin guards at soccer camp… and don't even get me started on water bottles! The “lost and found” turned up one of the many things he has lost, but that is it. He swears each time that he put the things in his bag. Unless, there is a sweaty shin guard thief, this obviously is untrue. We've tried charts and check lists. We've tried making him earn the replacement items, but nothing seems to stop the constant misplacing of items. HELP! For the truly forgetful kids, the oft-cited "natural consequences"– if he doesn't have his shin guards, he won't be able to play, and he'll sure remember next time!– rarely work. Your child will feel chagrined, but be just as likely to forget the next time. In this episode Amy suggests what has worked in her household, like making reminders unmissable (put the reminder ON the doorknob, not hanging above it) labeling everything that costs more than the label would (Amy uses oliverslabels.com) use list-making apps and model using them yourself (Amy uses Workflowy) Kids do well if they can. Don't give up on the checklists and the reminders if they don't work right away. Keep your support system consistent– and non-shaming– and eventually your child will check for those shin guards before he leaves the field. Here are some resources worth looking into for kids who are a little disorganized: Check out Carolyn Dalgliesh's ideas for helping forgetful kids get organized: http://www.carolyndalgliesh.com/ Sara Olsher of Mighty + Bright has lots of great tools for helping kids stay organized Our Fresh Take with Ryan Wexelblatt, the ADHD Dude Special thanks to our sponsor, Pampers: For trusted protection, choose Pampers, the #1 Pediatrician Recommended Brand. Welcome back to the Lighthouse Podcast! In this episode, Chris and Christy had the privilege of speaking with Sara Olsher. Sara is a single mother to a 12-year-old daughter, the CEO of Mighty + Bright, Author, and Executive Director of the Resilience Campaign. At the age of 34, Sara was diagnosed with breast cancer and found herself frustrated with the lack of resources explaining cancer to children. Sara began to have foundational conversations with her daughter, explaining her diagnosis and treatments. During her treatment, Sara began designing resources specific to cancer — including a children's book explaining the science of cancer and a visual calendar for kids to take the chaos out of treatment. Sara ends our discussion by sharing two helpful tips for parents: 1. Be open and honest with your children about what is happening. 2. Spend 10-15 minutes individually each day with your kids to connect and make them feel seen. For information on the resources mentioned, head to the Mighty & Bright website at https://mightyandbright.com/cancer. I had the pleasure of speaking with Sara Olsher of Mighty & Bright. She was also joined by Danielle Bettmann of Parenting Wholeheartedly. Sara shares her incredible story of resilience and determination as a breast cancer survivor, in addition to the challenges she overcame as a single mom of a young daughter. From those experiences, Mighty & Bright was born; a companyhelping families face though challenges with honesty and mental well-being in mind. As my listeners may know, these kinds of resources are greatly appreciated by me as I know too well what it is like to face though challenges as a family through my mom's metastatic breast cancer journey. Might and Bright's products and services would have without a doubt been usseful tools to help my daughter cope with her grandmother's cancer journey. While the experiences themselves are not always pleasant, it makes me so happy that Might and Bright exists and it is available for families and children facing challenges like divorce or cancer. If you're going through a separation you're already dealing with a boatload of personal stress, emotions, and big decisions. Trying to figure out how to talk to the kids about all of it can be a daunting task. Parents often agonize about how to inform their kids about this massive life change, and worry that they won't do it the “right way” (hint: there are some wrong ways to do it, but no one right way). When do you tell them? Should you wait until you know all the answers about where you'll live and what the new schedule will be? Should you tell them together with their other parent, or speak to them separately? How much detail do you share? How do you word things so that young ones can understand? In this episode we address all of these questions as we speak with Sara Olsher about how we can talk to kids about hard things. With her company Mighty+Bright, Sara creates picture books and resources that deal with life's hard issues like cancer, COVID, and…divorce. We chat with Sara about her own experiences in learning to communicate openly with her daughter about all of these tough topics. We give some practical tips about what to keep in mind, why you need to go easy on yourself, and a few “what not to do's” thrown in too. “Focusing on the children is what CO-PARENTING is all about.” - Sara Olsher Sara Olsher is a mom to a little girl with a big personality, wearer of cowboy boots, and drinker of exceptionally strong coffee. In 2012, she packed up her 18-month-old and left her marriage. What followed was about four years of intense personal growth and the birth of Mighty + Bright. Then in 2017, Sara was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at the age of 34. Rather than choosing to keep her daughter in the dark, Sara explained the diagnosis and treatment process to her six-year-old, included her throughout the year of healing, and documented her journey through cancer on her blog. She started Mighty + Bright for the same reason many parents start companies: because she wanted to help her own daughter and invented a product to do it. But since then, it's become so much more. Sara has seen firsthand that the universe can deal with some pretty harsh blows. As parents, we want nothing more than to see our children thrive - and nothing is more painful than knowing that we can't fix everything when things go wrong. Cancer taught Sara that what's important in life is our relationships. From the onset, her friends and family rallied around her, lifted her up, and showed her that much of what we spend our lives worrying about is unimportant. What is important is making sure that we stand by what matters to us, we focus on what is real, and we spend our time caring for ourselves and others. Mighty + Bright is about helping families handle the really hard things in life. We can't control the cards we're dealt, but we can control how we respond to them, and the message we send to our kids. For Sara, the message is this: Live your truth. Don't hide from the hard stuff, because it'll come whether you try to avoid it or not. Sara wholeheartedly believes that our darkest times are full of silver linings. It's a chance to get to know yourself (like, your real self, not the one who cares about what everyone else wants), a chance to learn how to graciously accept help when you need it, and a chance to show your kids how to handle the hard stuff head-on, with grace. Sara's background is in psychology and illustration, and after her divorce, she used both of these skills to create tools to help her young daughter understand and cope with the major changes in her life. Her first product was the shared custody calendar, which combines research-backed methods of teaching children with bright, happy illustrations. You can find Sara on SaraOlsher.com. In 2012, my guest, Sara Olsher, packed up her 18-month old daughter, left her marriage, and after four years of intense personal growth, founded a company that sells amazing resources for co-parents and their children. Whether it’s divorce, cancer, death, or any other uncertainty, Sara has worked hard to be comfortable with the profoundly uncomfortable through her company Mighty + Bright. Much of what we discuss in this episode is about how to help our children through a hard situation and ease their anxiety. Because honestly, most kids simply want to know that you’re going to be okay, and want to know how divorce is going to affect them. As Sara reminds us, “You’re raising resilient kids. This [divorce] is a really hard thing to go through, but every challenge that we have makes us more resilient and that’s true for your kids too. They have your support through it and you’re helping them to be stronger people.” Show Highlights Sara shares the story of her path towards healing after divorce led her into the world of child psychology and into the way that kids’ brains work. (7:45) The inspiration for her first product, a magnetic co-parenting calendar for separation + divorce. (9:58) Sara’s breast cancer diagnosis and the creation of a book about talking to children about cancer. (11:01) How her calendars and books help children get answers to unresolved questions, ease tension, and help them with executive functioning. (17:18) Learn More About Sara: As a writer, illustrator, and speaker, Sara spends her life creating products to help kids through really hard things at Mighty + Bright, and talking about stuff that makes many people want to crawl into a deep, dark hole. Whether it is divorce, cancer, death, or uncertainty, she has worked hard to be comfortable with the profoundly uncomfortable. Her work has been featured in POPSUGAR, Reader’s Digest, the Mighty, and Good Housekeeping, to name a few, and she has spoken in front of audiences large and small about her experience making major life changes after divorce and cancer. She truly believes that everyone has the strength and resilience to overcome unimaginable hardship and use those lessons to make this world a much better place. Universe, what's good?! Today's episode features the lovely Sara Olsher of Mighty + Bright! Kelsey's five-year “Cancerversary” is approaching on November 11th, and with her recent BCI results, she has been exploring additional options because she has been advised to continue Tamoxifen for another five years. Kelsey suffers from ovarian cysts, fatigue, nausea and has been bleeding for over four weeks. Stay tuned as she continues to work on bettering her health! Speaking of tough times, Sara Olsher is no stranger to them. Sara's bravery in telling her story is astounding, as she has gone through so, so much these past few years. The losses and curveballs have changed her tremendously. As family and friends suffered from breast cancer, she was also diagnosed with this dreadful disease. Surprisingly, she has tested negative for mutations. In life, we have the option to let situations defeat us, or we can alchemize them into something purposeful. While she had already helped families understand divorce with charts and books based on her own experiences, she would also be able to draw inspiration from her diagnosis and has expanded her business to also help children understand cancer.
