Welcome to the Beehive!  It's the 100th and final episode ever of the Rock Under Fire podcast.  It's all about hot takes as Mike Derrico is joined by Marisa Baldassaro, Heather Drain and Michael Lee Nirenberg in over two hours of too many topics to list.  But we'll try...let's see...there's random takes on Chuck Berry, the early days of the Internet, Joy Division, Brian Eno, the Gun Club, Def Leppard, Michael Monroe, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, the Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Marisa's Vince Neil imitation, about a dozen different takes on Kiss, including the question..."is Kiss misogynistic," and a whole lot more.  It must have been in the stars, but we saved the most insane episode by far...for last.  Thanks to all our supporters over the years.  We had a small audience but we had a blast.  Thanks for listening. Peace. luv, rock and roll...   Rock Under Fire host, Mike Derrico is a freelance writer, pop cultural historian, and author of the books, AUTUMN AND EVERYTHING AFTER: The Murder of John Lennon, Evolution of Bruce Springsteen & the Birth of the Reagan Era (2020), THE LOCKER NOTES, a novel (2021), and the forthcoming ...AND THE CATHEDRAL FELL TO THE GROUND: The Lonesome Death of Rock and Roll (November 2023). Michael Lee Nirenberg, in his fourth time on the podcast, is a writer and director whose most celebrated recent works have been his 2014 documentary Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story, and his 2020 book Earth A.D. the Poisoning of the American Landscape and the Communities That Fought Back.   Heather Drain, in her second Rock Under Fire guest spot, is a writer who veers between the worlds of esoterica film, wild music, heart-born words, and prose that is dark, rich, quirky, and often undefinable. In the nonfiction realm, her work has appeared on the print and digital pages of Dangerous Minds, Diabolique, Video Watchdog, Art Decades, just to name a few. Her prose has appeared in both the Women in Horror Annual, as well as the 2020 anthology, The Blind Dead Ride Out of Hell: A Literary Tribute to the Amando de Ossorio. Marisa Baldassaro is a writer and fellow hater currently putting the finishing touches on her latest project, a Dory Previn zine, discussed earlier this season on Rock Under Fire (Ep. 79).  Marisa has also co-hosted several episodes of Rock Under Fire during Season 3.     Check out Heather's Patreon... https://www.patreon.com/mondoheather Follow Heather Drain on Twitter... https://twitter.com/mondoheather Follow Marisa Baldassaro on Twitter Marisa Baldassaro (@Nerdspringbreak) / Twitter Follow Mike Nirenberg on Twitter Michael Lee Nirenberg (@MLNirenberg) / Twitter Derrico Untitled https://derricountitled.com/  RUF Archives https://rockunderfire.libsyn.com/ Follow Mike on Twitter  https://twitter.com/Mike__Derrico Copyright free music provided by Lovers Squared by Letter Box 1973 by Bruno E Giorgio Di Campo for FreeSound Music

We pick four songs at random from every decade since the 1960s for discussion. This recording originally comes from our 2018 holiday special which amounted to a three-hour radio show. For copyright reasons, music has been omitted but the discussion left intact. After Youtube muted our 2016 version, Pat later joked that we should just leave the audio and let the audience imagine that we're playing music. Well, here it is...for fun we've done just that for this special double episode. Mike Derrico and Patrick Ivanitski are your hosts. Again, this is from 2018...don't be thrown by misplaced cultural references! In the early days of independent record stores, if you grew up in New Jersey's Middlesex, Union or Essex counties during the 1970s, 80s or 90s, chances are you shopped at Little Joe Records, Dot Records or J&J Records where you could find all of those good things you couldn't get at your local boring and predictable Sam Goody. Childhood friend Joe Gerulski joins the show for Episode 61 to share some great music-related stories and talk about growing up in the family-run business selling records in an age when records were still the biggest-selling musical format and rock music was still at peak popularity. As a rock and roll podcast, we make it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that our show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. The seven decades of rock and roll music along with its even longer history gives us an extremely broad canvas to create discussions on, drawing from different areas with each episode. We are joined by longtime friend Michael Czirjak in an episode that looks back on New Jersey's music scene in the 1990s when we were all rock stars. We're still rock stars, but just doing different things now. Michael is a New Jersey native, lifelong guitarist, and music nerd. In the 90s, he and his band Segway recorded heavily and gigged tirelessly up and down the East Coast to anyone who would listen. These days, he spends the majority of his time teaching his six-year old twin boys (Sam and George) the importance of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the need for very loud guitars. He is also a Partner and Co-founder of the Hi-Tech Recruiting Firm C2R Ventures, HQ'd in New York City. https://c2rventures.com/   In this episode we discuss the rock clubs of the 90s NJ music scene such as the Melody, Club Bene, Birch Hill, Studio One, etc...plus, the rebirth of vinyl, farewell tours, Slayer, Van Halen, Bruno Mars,Iron Maiden, Chuck Berry, John Mellencamp, Elder, Ghost, Art Stock, and a whole lotta random stuff. Legendary rock and roll photographer and author, Bob Gruen joins us for our one-year anniversary episode. We discuss Bob's career producing iconic images that have very often provided the narrative for rock and roll for the past 50 years. Bob is synonymous with John Lennon, Yoko Ono, The Rolling Stones, Ike and Tina Turner, Kiss, The New York Dolls, Led Zeppelin, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, and a mind-numbing host of other rock and roll legends. It is also difficult to think of Bob Gruen without thinking of his home, stomping ground, and workplace, New York City. He is, without a doubt, New York's premier photographer, and one of the most important that rock and roll music has ever seen. In this little tribute episode to the power of the image in rock music, we're honored to be joined by Bob. Mike also gives his review of the Fyre Festival. Mike Derrico and Pat Ivanitski are your hosts in the absence of co-host Stick Nixon. Go to Bob Gruen's website at http://www.bobgruen.com/. We thank all of our supporters who stepped up to get behind this brand new podcast this past year. We make it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that our show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. In Episode 6 we look back at the music of 1966... fifty years later, and reassess highly influential albums such as The Beatles REVOLVER, Bob Dylan's BLONDE ON BLONDE, and The Beach Boys PET SOUNDS.  We examine the year as a dividing line between the past and the future of rock music, and a marker for significant change in music altogether.  We also debate the remarkably eclectic mix of musical styles simultaneously on the charts during a 12-month period that informed how rock music would be recorded, presented, and heard in the future. Join Pat Ivanitski, Mike Derrico, and Stick Nixon in this unique blast from the past, fifty years in the making...the artists, the bands, the music, and the influence of 1966.
