Growing up on Long Island, Bob Gruen's parents wanted him to work 9-5. And for much of his life, he did. 9PM-5AM. He's spent 60 years documenting rock ‘n roll through photographs. Bob wasn't photographing the scene. He was part of the scene, earning the trust of musicians, hanging out with them, touring with them, befriending them and photographing them in human, unscripted moments: Ike and Tina Turner, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, The Sex Pistols, The Clash. And his good friends, John and Yoko. His pictures of John at the Statue of Liberty and wearing the New York City shirt are iconic, seen around the world.

Punk rock came roaring to life in a cramped, dingy bar on New York City's Lower East Side called CBGB at 315 Bowery. More known for its filthy bathrooms than its drinks or food—legendary rock photographer Bob Gruen said with a laugh, “It was not a place you'd eat at.”—it is significant for its oversized influence on rock ‘n' roll history. It's the punk rock Cavern Club, a launching pad for new genres of music that still reverberate today. Punk scene likely would have happened without CBGB, but the grungy little club gave it a homebase. In this podcast I'll talk about the unruly story of an accidental cultural incubator born out of a unique moment in history where outsiders, like The Ramones, The Dead Boys, Talking Heads and Blonde, were brought together, celebrated and encouraged to be themselves. Joining me to tell the story of CBGB are photographer Boib gruen, filmmaker, co-founder of “Punk” magazine and CBGBite Mary Harron, The ‘B' Girls singer Lucasta Ross and The Punk Rock Museum co-founder Lisa Brownlee. Topping it off is an interview from the vault I did with CBGB's owner Hilly Kristal in 1992

We'll meet Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson who talk about the early days of the band and finding success in Japan. Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and co-founding member of KISS stops by to talk about working with his former band, his new music and why he doesn't approve of all of the KISS merchandise that features his image. Liberty DeVitto, author of the memoir Liberty: “Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness” talks about the thirty years he spent playing drums for Billy Joel. We talk about how they met and get some inside scoop. For instance, did you know Only the Good Die Young was written as a reggae song? Finally, we meet John Lennon's personal photographer Bob Gruen. The legendary photographer opens up about taking famous pictures of every rock ‘n roll star from David Bowie and Led Zeppelin to The Clash and The Sex Pistols.

Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko's personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign – two of the most popular of Lennon's images. As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the '70s, Bob specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. He toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie. Bob has also worked with major rock acts such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Aerosmith, Kiss and Alice Cooper. In 1989, he documented the epic trip to Russia of the “Moscow Music Peace Festival” featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi. For many years Bob was the official photographer for the New Music Seminar held in New York City, covering dozens of aspiring new bands in the course of a summer week. This seminal body of work reflects a profound commitment and long-standing personal friendship with the artists. His wealth of personal experiences and uncanny memory provide the most illuminating and comprehensive histories of rock youth culture. “All Dolled Up,” a DVD documentary made by Bob Gruen and Nadya Beck of their early '70s video footage of the New York Dolls, was released in 2005 with a follow-up DVD, “Lookin' Fine On Television” released in 2011. In the spring of 2007 FAAP University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, presented an exhibition of Bob Gruen's work. Titled ROCKERS, the exhibition attracted 40,000 visitors. The ROCKERS exhibition was also shown from April to July 2008 at Morrison Hotel Gallery on the Bowery in New York City. Bob's “Sid Vicious with Hot Dog” photo was acquired by The National Portrait Gallery, London, in 1999 for their permanent collection. The Experience Music Project, Seattle, acquired his “Clash Live in Boston”, “Tina Turner Multiple Image”, and “Bloody Sid Vicious” photos for their permanent collection in March 2012. In 2011 award winning director Don Letts made a feature length film titled ‘Rock & Roll Exposed – the Photography of Bob Gruen' including interviews with Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Alice Cooper, Yoko Ono, Billie Joe Armstrong and many more. Bob was presented in June 2004 with MOJO Magazine's prestigious Honours List Award for Classic Image in London and in November 2010 he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. For his many charitable contributions, Bob received the first ever John Lennon Real Love Award in December 2014 at the 32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute Concert. More recently he has also photographed Green Day's tour of Europe, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, Iggy Pop, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Jesse Malin, Ryan Adams, Courtney Love, The Strypes and other new popular acts.  Listen to a series of revealing John Lennon stories hitherto untold – until now. In this riveting interview, attorney - author Jay Bergen recalls his time representing the former Beatle in 1975 in his case against Mafia-connected record mogul Morris Levy. Levy bullied Lennon, releasing an unauthorized album entitled “Roots” – which forced John to hastily bring out “Rock and Roll” to save his reputation which had been significantly damaged by the politically charged “Sometime In New York City” slab. Aside from the twists and turns in the courtroom, Bergen uncovers much about Lennon that fans never knew: his intense work ethic in the studio and deep knowledge of the process of record making; his views on controversial releases “Two Virgins” and “The Wedding Album,” Lennon's fascination with New York City landmarks he'd never visited, and why Bergen feels that Lennon would not be pleased by the archival releases of his and The Beatles outtakes in recent years. Bergen's tome LENNON THE MOBSTER & THE LAWYER available now from Devault Graves Books, with a forward by Bob Gruen. The Jay Bergen Playlist

Bob Gruen is the greatest Rock & Roll photographer of all time. If you have seen the photos of John Lennon standing in front of the statue of liberty, or in his "New York" sleevless shirt, or, the iconic Led Zeppelin in front of the airplane, or Sid Vicious of The Sex Pistols holding the hot dog, you have seen his work. Bob Gruen was friends with everyone in music, just because of the opportunities he made happen, suddenly landing him backstage or in front of the band shooting some of the greatest shots in music history. Bob felt it was important to document the events, though at the time he really was unaware how important his photos would be as time moved on from those moments, making them "history". You will probably see some you recognize of: Queen, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, The Runaways, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Ike and Tina Turner, Elton John, The Who, Bo Diddley, Blondie, The Ramones, Iggy Pop ... you get the idea. He is a very thoughtful guy, with some incredible stories. There are links to the galleries that sell his photos below. (7:19)   Dumb Ass News - A reporter completely fell into hysterics while trying to report about a pig, named "Chris P. Bacon." (21:39)   Cobra Kai's third season is already the number one show on NetFlix, less than a week after it's debut. Griffin Santopietro is one of the young actors on the show, and from CT! Can he tell us anything about what he knows for season 4? (25:49)   Rock photographer Bob Gruen has so many incredible stories about the bands and acts he's had a chance to meet. He explained how John Lennon wound up performing some impromptu songs with Elton John at MSG, and how difficult it was for him sometimes as a photographer, just to get into these shows.
