What reasonable adjustments can you get in the workplace? Why do we have a Deficit Model? How can you advocate for your needs? Carrin M. Gilmore (@letstalkaboutautism) is an Autism advocate offering Advocacy Accommodations sessions and support for parents and their children in developing IEP (Individual Education Plans). Working closely with Carole Whittington at Mind Your Autistic Brain, Carrin and the team seeks to bring greater inclusivity in the workplace, help neurodivergent couples connect on a deeper level and support neurodivergent individuals in their unmasking journey. Carrin's Links - https://linktr.ee/CarrinMWAut // My Links - https://linktr.ee/thomashenleyUK Originally an English teacher, Carrin seeks to bridge the gap between deficit models in the workplace and person-centred models in education. They talk about the various accommodations one can expect in the workplace, one of which is being fired (yes... you read that right, it's actual advice for workplaces!). Thomas and Carrin paint a picture of the individuals who deal with the hand they are dealt in the workplace, highlighting the daily issues with energy, sanity and time management that could be avoided with accommodations. The system works using a Deficit Model, rather than a Strength-Based Model, providing cookie-cutter, blanket solutions for each and every individual - but needs are a spectrum. Thomas raises the common charity-based thinking around employing Autistic people, with both offering their takes on the benefits these individuals have for businesses... beyond 'charity'. Carrin lists some common adjustments: Work coaches, giving adequate processing time, clear and concise language, lists/bullet point instructions and CLEAR lines of communication for certain issues. However, these are NOT mandatory and even if they are met, positive adjustments offered the clearest path for Thomas' long-term employment success. At the end of the day, the employment rates for autistic people are depressing at least, but there are gems out there who are willing to go the extra mile for their employees who are willing to work with them cooperatively and with the understanding that support is a two-way street. It happens often in late identified life, you share you are autistic with someone and they reply, “But you don't look autistic.” This is what sparked my campaign last year #WhatAutismActuallyLooksLike #WhatAutismLooksLike to share that autism is part of adult life not just childhood. We had so many submissions for the video and it has been shared all over the globe and across social media platforms. AND it is making a difference!!! If you haven't seen it yet, check it out on my YouTube Channel, Mind Your Autistic Brain in the playlist, What Autism Looks Like. This year the What Autism Actually Looks like campaign theme is: Autism in the Workforce. I am leading the #NeurodistinctWorkforceMovement and the best way to begin shifting the broken narrative that we are only good at math or only work in Tech or IT is to showcase where we ACTUALLY are working. The adult autistic population is grossly unemployed and underemployed not because we lack the skills or abilities, but because the workforce has not yet begun to truly understand the gift that our neurotype is to not just the workforce but to humanity. Let's share who we are and what we do to make the workforce a place FOR US. It takes all of our voices to make a change. How & What to submit: Between March 1st and March 18th send in a photo of you working in your profession, this could be you at your desk, working with clients, or if you are in school for a profession right now share that as well. OR you can include a short video clip no more than 20 seconds in length showing what you do. Include the statement in your video, “I am autistic and I am a/work in (insert what your profession or field of industry here)” End with the phrase, “We are Autistic” Check out last year's video for ideas. DEADLINE to submit is midnight Eastern US Time Friday, March 18th. Send your submission to: CaroleJeanW(at)SocialAutie(dot com) with the SUBJECT Line: I Am Autistic. If you want a tee shirt like the one I am wearing from the Autastic Shop and wear your shirt in April when the campaign goes live with the new video. Carole Jean received an ADHD diagnosis in early adulthood, but wasn't diagnosed as autistic until she was 39. Her "neurodistinct" journey has led her to help so many other late diagnosed autistic adults go from burnout to balance. Carole Jean's honesty and vulnerability provided us with so many lessons on how to be better romantic partners in a neurodiverse relationship, as well as how to create space for understanding and grace when we really don't understand ourselves or our partners, but want to. Carole Jean is a gift to the neurodiverse/neurodistinct community and it was such a pleasure learning from her and learning a little bit about the challenges she has experienced and grown and healed from, and the many strengths she has in her current relationship with her partner Josh:-) For more information on Carole Jean and the amazing work she is doing to help other late diagnosed adults thrive, please check her out on Instagram @socialautie and check out her podcast "Mind Your Autistic Brain". ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ If you are interested in learning more about neurodiverse relationships please check out our website at: www.neurodiverselove.com or follow us on Instagram @neurodiverse_love If you would like to join our Neurodiverse Love Peer Support Groups please send us a DM on Instagram or an e-mail at: neurodiverselove4u@gmail.com Thank you for being a part of the Neurodiverse Love community.
