Goring “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” —Psalm 46:1 NIV Safety. We all crave it, especially when our world feels like it is spinning out of control. There have been times in my life when I felt like there is no safe place for us here on Earth. But in recent years, God helped me see that He is our safe place. I realize that no matter how unsafe our circumstances are and no matter where we live on this planet, we can go to God for safety. The Bible says that He is our refuge and strength. God is present when we face trouble. He can protect us and deliver us from evil. We just need to trust Him. There is a song by Karen Clark Sheard called “A Secret Place”. The opening lyrics of this song touch on how cruel this world can be, filling you with pain that pierces your soul. But, Sheard sings, there is a secret place where we can go for refuge. It is a place filled with peace and safety that only God can provide. A place where God’s love for you surrounds and heals your hurting heart. Sheard calls this place a “tabernacle”. It is not always a physical place on Earth like a literal modern-day church building, sanctuary or Biblical tabernacle. I believe Sheard is singing about having a place where you and God can meet in secret. Some call this their “prayer closet”. This can mean you walk into your actual closet where you hang your clothes and keep your shoes then make space to meet with God there. After watching the Christian movie “War Room” many people were inspired to create a prayer closet like Miss Clara’s. For those of you who have not seen that movie, allow me to explain what I mean. In the movie, Miss Clara (played by Karen Abercrombie), is an elderly woman with a strong prayer life. During a tour of her house that she is trying to sell, she shows her real estate agent (Elizabeth Jordan, played by Priscilla Shirer) her closet. As Miss Clara opens the door to her closet that is located inside her bedroom, she tells Elizabeth that this is her “war room”. As Elizabeth enters the small but spacious closet, she sees how Miss Clara made room in it to post her handwritten prayer requests written on paper onto the previous empty walls inside her closet. There are years-worth of prayer requests and praise reports from the prayers God has answered. Miss Clara didn’t just pray for her husband when he was alive; she prayed for everyone God put on her heart. She didn’t allow her mind to ruminate over the pain and problems in the world; Miss Clara sought God in prayer for victories she knew only He could accomplish. This is how she fought and won all her battles over the years. I would say that Miss Clara’s prayer closet “war room” was also her secret place that Sheard sings about because that was where she could shut the noisy world out and commune with God in a private, quiet, safe place. It probably is also where—outside of a Bible-believing church—she felt God’s presence strongest. It is clear to me that God comforted Miss Clara’s troubled heart every time she sought His Presence in her prayer closet. Miss Clara is a fictional character but the concept about having a prayer closet in real life is Biblical. The Bible says in Matthew 6:6 (NIV), “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Now the Bible doesn’t say exactly how or when God will reward you for spending time in secret prayer with Him, but it does say that we are blessed when we take refuge in Him (Psalm 34:8). I believe those blessings can mean that we gain a closer relationship with our Creator. We get to know Him better as our Heavenly Father and we feel safe in His arms. The Bible describes God as our “fortress” (Psalm 46:11). And the good news is we don’t need to have an actual closet to pray to Him in because God is literally everywhere in this world. We can seek refuge in Him anywhere we are on this planet. He is always with us. There is nowhere we can hide from God. He sees all and knows all (Hebrews 4:13). We can trust that He sees our pain that we experience when the world is cold and cruel. God wants us to come to Him for comfort and healing. The Bible says in Psalm 34:18 (NIV), “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” When we go to God for safety, we can trust that with Him on our side, we are going to be okay. In closing, listen a song that Tasha Layton sings called “Into the Sea”. I believe it will encourage your heart. Intersecting Faith and Life: How does it feel to know that God is our safe place? THE FORGE, the newest Christian movie from the Kendrick Brothers, is a powerful illustration and reminder that discipleship matters! Guest host Adam McManus interviews Alex Kendrick, the co-writer and director of the film, which has already made $27 million domestically since August 23rd. At its height, THE FORGE was shown in 1,900 theaters. Still in 700 theaters today, go to the website www.TheForgeMovie.com to find out where it is playing near you. In the film, Isaiah Wright, played by Aspen Kennedy, has some growing up to do. A year out of high school with no plans for his future, Isaiah is challenged by his single mom and a successful businessman to start charting a better course for his life. Through the Biblical discipleship from his new mentor, prayers of his mother and a prayer warrior named Miss Clara, Isaiah begins to discover God's purpose for his life. Most Bible-believing Christians know the Great Commission by memory. It records the last words of Jesus during His earthly ministry found in Mathew 28:18-20. Jesus said, “All authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Notice it doesn't say, “Go and make converts.” While the movie inspires Christians to make disciples, their companion book, Devoted To Jesus, equips believers to disciple others by working through the 52 short chapters in 52 weeks with anyone who needs to grow in faith. Like the special ceremony for young men in THE FORGE, McManus shares the story of the special Manhood Celebration ceremony he organized for his son Honor's 13th birthday. Much like the Jewish families launch their sons into adulthood through a bar mitzvah, McManus believes Evangelical parents should be more intentional. Rob Dempsey, Morning Show Host of His Radio, said, “THE FORGE masterfully weaves together themes of forgiveness, mentorship, and the hope of the Gospel, creating an entertaining and impactful film that leaves a lasting impression.” Watch the trailer of THE FORGE. This program includes: 1. The World View in 5 Minutes with Adam McManus (J.D. Vance beat Tim Walz in Vice Presidential debate, Iran launched missiles against Israel, Alex Kendrick chats with Adam McManus) 2. Generations with Kevin Swanson (guest-hosted by Adam McManus)

In Podcast Episode 60, “Beware of Fighting the Wrong Opponent,” Kim discusses the conflict between Jephthah and the tribe of Ephraim. Instead of joining together to fight the true enemies of the Lord, many lives were lost fighting each other. The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 12:1-7, with the focal scriptures 1 and 6b. 1 Then the people of Ephraim mobilized an army and crossed over the Jordan River to Zaphon. They sent this message to Jephthah: “Why didn't you call for us to help you fight against the Ammonites? We are going to burn down your house with you in it!”…6b Then they would take him and kill him at the shallow crossings of the Jordan. In all, 42,000 Ephraimites were killed at that time. Compare to Judges 8:1-3. 1 Then the people of Ephraim asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us this way? Why didn't you send for us when you first went out to fight the Midianites?” And they argued heatedly with Gideon. 2 But Gideon replied, “What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren't even the leftover grapes of Ephraim's harvest better than the entire crop of my little clan of Abiezer? 3 God gave you victory over Oreb and Zeeb, the commanders of the Midianite army. What have I accomplished compared to that?” When the men of Ephraim heard Gideon's answer, their anger subsided. The brothers Kendrick, both Alex and Stephen have come together to produce a film that America desperately needs right now. War Room is a very open discussion on the power of prayer. This topic is not one that our main stream media would discuss. Their agenda seems to support the notion that being Christian is somehow politically incorrect. However, the apparent success at the box office of this film would support a different conclusion. It would seem that it is very clear that people are afraid and don't know where to begin a process to lessen that fear. War Room offers that guidance. Priscilla Shirer, in the lead role of Elizabeth, is a woman fighting with her husband and for her marriage when she finds an unlikely partner in an older, devout woman longing to share the power of prayer. Karen Abercrombie is Miss Clara, an elderly, godly woman who begins to mentor Elizabeth. Miss Clara knows about love, loss and fighting the right battles in the right way: by prayer. Give me an hour a week and I will teach you how to fight the right way with the right resources, says Miss Clara. Elizabeth learns how to direct her voice to God. The timing of this film could not have been better. As Alex said, just look around. There is a fight to win on every corner and this fight is for the very soul of our country.
