A Policy Agenda for Achieving Reproductive Justice

Reproductive justice is the human right to control our bodies, our sexuality, our gender, our work, and our reproduction.  This right can only be achieved when everyone, especially those most marginalized, have the complete economic, social, and political power and resources to make healthy decisions about their bodies, families and communities. Bridgette Jackson, Director of Public Policy at In Our Own Voice: National Black Women's Reproductive Justice Agenda, Kat Olivera, Director of Government Relations at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice (NLIRJ), and Fajer Saeed Ebrahim, Senior Policy Manager at the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF), sit down to talk with us about the reproductive justice policy agenda. NAPAWF, NLIRJ, and In Our Own Voice lead the Intersections of Our Lives Collaborative, which developed the comprehensive policy framework for achieving reproductive justice. The agenda is structured around three key pillars: healthy body, healthy families and communities, and healthy democracy. The policies included are focused on accessible sex education, abortion and contraception equity, gender-affirming care, and resistance to the criminalization of bodies. Support the showFollow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Bluesky: @reprosfightback.bsky.social Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

Welcome to Season 5, Episode 7! Today's guest is Fajer Saeed Ebrahim, a Senior Policy Manager at the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, AKA NAPAWF. If you're a longtime listener, then you'll remember we were fortunate enough to bring in Sydelle Barreto, the Policy Manager NAPAWF to talk about Clocking Inequality back on Season 4, Episode 39! NAPAWF has been hard at work with their latest report entitled “Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Community: Understanding Barriers to Access in Georgia”.  Fajer is a skilled legal advocate with substantial experience in organizing, policy, and legislative advocacy related to reproductive rights and justice, racial equity, survivor justice, and immigrant healthcare. Prior to her work with NAPAWF, she was a senior advisor with the Coalition to Expand Contraceptive Access; a consultant with the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders; a consultant with the Center for Reproductive Rights, as well as other stops.  NAPAWF is the only organization dedicated to uplifting and building power with AANHPI women and girls in the US. Employing a reproductive justice framework to guide their work, they use organizing, advocacy, and communications strategies to assert full agency over our lives, our families, and our communities. Working with the Emory University Center for Reproductive Health Research in the Southeast (RISE), this latest report by NAPAWF seeks to uncover the systemic barriers Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) women and gender-expansive individuals face in accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH). We recommend you read the full report, donate to NAPAWF, stay informed, and take action. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 39! Our guest today is Sydelle Barreto, the Policy Manager of The National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum. The NAPAWF (pronounced “NAP-off”) is the only multi-issue, progressive, community organizing and policy advocacy organization for Asian American and Pacific Islander women and girls in the United States. Founded in 1996 by a group of 100 AAPI women, these “founding sisters” came together to establish an organization that would amplify AAPI women's stories and experiences. They recognized that the voices of AAPI women all too often went unseen and unheard, so they founded NAPAWF to center their lived experiences within the broader public narrative. NAPAWF focuses on four key issues that include: Reproductive Health and Rights, Economic Justice and Equal Pay, Immigrant Rights, and Racial Justice. They recently published a report called Clocking Inequality: Understanding Economic Inequity, the Wage Gap, and Workplace Experiences of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Women. It's amazing what you discover when you disaggregate the data on the AANHPI community when you're researching wage gaps. In this conversation, we talk to Sydelle about her journey to NAPAWF, the Clocking Inequality report, some of the key details, the policies we can adopt at the federal and local levels to support the AANHPI community, and what we can do as individuals to support change. To learn more, read the Clocking Inequality report, visit the NAPAWF website, and follow them on Instagram @napawf. On today's episode of Down the Rabbit Hole, William and Kate are joined by Jennifer Mudge and Mohini Lal to discuss reproductive justice and how it intersects with intimate partner violence. Serving as a TCFV Public Policy Coordinator and Public Policy Manager respectively, Jen and Mohini have many years of demonstrated experience in the gender-based violence and reproductive justice movements between them. Listen in as we reflect on the intersectional nature of reproductive justice and how it encompasses not just the right to choose if, when, and how to have children, but also broader social issues such as environmental justice, domestic violence, and gender-affirming care. We also touch on common taboos and misconceptions, how reproductive coercion is rooted in systems of oppression, and Jen and Mohini share some helpful resources for survivors and listeners in Texas and beyond. Reproductive justice is a complex topic that can be difficult to talk about. In this episode, we interview Yin Ling Leung whose parents immigrated from China to Hawaii. We look at the trauma of leaving your family and home community behind to move somewhere else, and how that trauma defines American society. "Grandma" signifies both the grandmother that Yin never got to know, and the many grandparents, extended families, and communities that got left behind when migrants left their home country to live in the United States. Is this the root of some of our biggest emotional neglect issues? Great things to think about as we celebrate Thanksgiving or the new Day of Mourning this week in the US, a holiday that honors early settlers and colonizers here.00:00 Introduction by Anne and AlisonNative American rights issues and Thanksgiving plans7:42 Interview with YinEconomic violence, economic mobility, the magic of books and spending time in nature, protective factors of childhood, and spam sandwiches.About Yin Ling Leung:Yin Ling Leung is the Chief Strategy Officer and the co-founder of Applied Research Works, a Palo Alto-based health technology company, where she works on her passion creating actionable metrics for addressing Whole Person Care (WPC) a framework for addressinghealth disparities.  Her life's work has spanned organizing for better working conditions for sweatshop workers, preventing toxic exposure for vulnerable communities, reproductive health and justice and advocating for more democratic philanthropy.  Leung held key leadership roles at Asian Immigrant Women Advocates, Asian Pacific Environmental Network, Asians and Pacific Islanders for Reproductive Health and the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF).  She was one of the original organizersand founding sisters of NAPAWF, the first national organization of its kind born out of the 1995 United Nations' Women's Conference in Beijing.  In the past, Leung has also served as a strategist to the New World Foundation, Ford Foundation, Social Justice Fund Northwest, Women's Funding Alliance, Communities for a Better Environment, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy and the Ms. Foundation for Women.Leung spent her childhood in Hawai'i and is a graduate of Oberlin College and Stanford University.  She and her family lead a global nomadic existence spanning the SF Bay Area, Kolkata, India and Hawai'i.

How many more out there are subject to the same influences? In this episode we are taking a closer look at the doctrines and teachings that fed the consciousness of a murderer. We’re talking about the dangers of purity culture in light of the recent spa shootings in Atlanta. In light of the targeted violence against the Asian community last week in Georgia, Maria and Julio unpack the root causes that led to this tragedy, including a history of racism toward AAPI communities and racialized misogyny against Asian women. They speak with Sung Yeon Choimorrow, executive director of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, and Kristine Villaneuva, a journalist and project editor at Resolve Philly’s “Equally Informed” initiative. They also hear from Leng Leng Chancey, executive director of 9 to 5, who spoke about what's needed for the path toward liberation for communities of color. ITT Staff Picks: Karissa Chen wrote for NBC Think on the history and issues with the "massage parlor" stereotype: “That is the state of being an Asian woman in America: Your existence is constantly dehumanized, sexualized and objectified; for many, you are merely a colonizer’s fantasy.”Self Evident, a podcast that centers Asian American stories, shared via Twitter how the show began covering anti-Asian violence last April, in addition to thoughts about how the burden of this work largely falls on Asian American journalists, educators and activists. Check out their latest episodes here."The social media conversations to #StopAsianHate and #StopAAPIHate arose from a collective breaking point in Asian America. Asian American experiences, histories, pain and joy have been disproportionately invisible in our textbooks, and in mass media, keeping most of us from understanding our own struggles," writes Jezz Chung in this piece for The Lily, which also includes a list of resources to continue learning and supporting.Photo credit: AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Around the time of this episode's release, there was a racially motivated mass shooting in Atlanta that left eight dead, most of which were Asian women. The United States' long history of anti-Asian sentiment cannot be ignored, especially after the past year of racist discussion around COVID-19 in the media and from elected officials. It should not take a pandemic and an uprising spurred by police violence against Black men and women to generate a national reckoning with racism, but here we are. If we want this moment to spark transformation, we need to crack open the full body of evidence about how non-White people are perceived and treated in America. And we need organizations like the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, that build power in communities made invisible by bias. Jennifer Wang, lawyer, strategist and one of the women at the helm of NAPAWF, is a power-builder. She recounts how stereotypes of privilege overshadow the lived experience of AAPI people, a non-monolithic community of over 50 ethnicities. And she explains why NAPAWF has taken on a singular mission, the reproductive rights of AAPI women and girls. Our conversation is particularly salient in a moment in which discrimination against AAPI women is rampant, from the White House to the streets. Jennifer shares what happened when her boss, Sung Yeon Choimorrow, was assaulted by hate speech while on a walk with her daughter. This is essential listening: painful, heartening and invigorating.

The Supreme Court of the United States just released long-awaited decisions on two highly consequential reproductive rights cases. In June Medical Services v. Russo, the court weighed in on whether states can enact a specific type of sham law to limit access to abortion care (TLDR; they said not *that* type of law but others might be cool). In Little Sisters of the Poor v. Pennsylvania, the court decided whether your (yes, your) private employer or university can deny coverage of birth control based on their religious or moral beliefs (spoiler: yes, even if you don't work for a religiously-affiliated organization). Suffice it to say that these two decisions have HUGE implications for reproductive rights in the United States. On the podcast to break it all down is attorney Kimya Forouzan, a legal fellow of reproductive rights law organization If/When/How who is currently working within the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF). Kimya explains what happened in these cases and what it all means for our reproductive rights moving forward.    RESOURCE MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: For anyone with questions or concerns about their birth control coverage, particularly in light of the decision in Little Sisters of the Poor, the National Women's Law Center (who worked on the amicus brief for the case) runs a free hotline called CoverHer to help triage any birth control insurance coverage questions.

As abortion once again heats up as a national issue, NAPAWF executive director and fellow PAACster Sung Yeon Choimorrow joins us to talk about how to have a conversation about abortion with other well meaning Christians, and why the debate about abortion is fundamentally about controlling women's agency. She also discusses her role as ED of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (“Your life will never be easy again,”), the difficult moral choices it sometimes requires, and the work that NAPAWF did in the case of Purvi Patel. It is no surprise to us how often Asian women are bombarded by harmful messages from society and media. Tired of being told how we should navigate the world, Sung Yeon Choimorrow and I will be opening up the conversation on body issues by first discussing and dispelling stereotypes fostered by microaggressions, internalized racism, fatphobia, racism, and more. Later on in the podcast, Sung Yeon also will share her professional involvement with body politics through means of organizational advocacy under the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF). She will bring up topics on NAPAWF’s current agenda, such as immigration and deportation. We will end strong with closing remarks to questions that many of us in our community have asked every day: What does #bodylove mean to us? What does it mean to have agency over our bodies? How can we change the culture and attitude around our politicized bodies and finally reclaim agency over our bodies? Sung Yeon Choimorrow is the executive director of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, the nation’s only organization dedicated to advocacy at the intersection of gender and racial justice for Asian American Pacific Islander women and girls. For clarity, these show notes and this podcast episode will be inclusive of undocumented immigrants and immigrants with legal status. In the United States today, there are more than 8 million citizens who live with at least one family member who may be undocumented. Yesenia Chavez with the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) and Jaclyn Dean with the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF) talk to us about the fight for access to healthcare for immigrants. Children make up the majority of the millions of citizens who live with at least one family member. In fact, 6 million of these citizens are children. This means that many types of immigration enforcement actions come with severe emotional, mental, developmental, physical and financial repercussions for both the children and the undocumented individuals. Immigrants are not able to legally access public benefit programs until they have proven their permanent resident status, and only after five years of having that status. These programs can help provide housing, food, and health security to these communities. It is important to note that this same five-year bar also prevents access to the Affordable Care Act insurance marketplace. This means that opportunities for immigrant individuals and families are already limited, and immigrants often rely on a patchwork of insurance sources to cover healthcare. If their employer does not cover insurance or if they do not qualify for Medicaid, then immigrants often have to turn to paying for emergency care out of pocket, or seeking help through a community health center.46% of immigrant, non-citizen women of reproductive age in the U.S. are privately insured, 19% rely on Medicaid for their insurance, and 34% are completely uninsured. The uninsured rate for immigrant women of reproductive age who are living in poverty is 48%. Nearly half of all immigrants in the U.S. are women and children.Support the show (https://www.reprosfightback.com/take-action#donate)

Gardasil is the first cervical cancer vaccine ever developed. After it was approved in 2006, controversy has surrounded this vaccine. Its safety and effectiveness have been questioned, and the requirement that immigrant women take the vaccine has come to the forefront of both immigrant rights and reproductive justice organizing. These groups have also put this new vaccination requirement into a historical context. Advocates argue that this vaccine is a new chapter in a history of reproductive oppression that targets women of color and immigrant women. On this edition, we look at the intersection of reproductive justice and immigrant rights. And we hear from activists, doctors, attorneys and women most affected by the new vaccination. This program is made possible in part by The Reproductive Justice Fund at the Tides Foundation.
