"MOMMY NEEDS WINE!", "Mommy Juice", "It Takes a Village, and a Vineyard", "Time to Wine Down". The amount of t-shirts, mugs, wine glasses, and other memorabilia may seem clever and cute at first. But is it? Normally I'm not a party pooper and I'm far from a "Karen", but lately this movement of mommies coping with booze is really affecting me. You probably listened to my solo episode surrounding this topic (check out EP24 if you missed it!), but today I have an expert, a friend, and someone who has actually experienced the slippery and dangerous slope of alcohol and motherhood. In today's episode we chat with Shelley DeJongh (Licensed Professional Counselor with SO many credentials!) about why drinking to cope is normalized, the stress that mothers are under, and the lack of coping skill knowledge we have. She touches on the definition of a "Wine Mom" (yes it's actually a "thing" and The Atlantic has an actual article on it https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2020/05/wine-moms-explained/612001/ ), how we know if we have entered the danger zone with drinking, how to adjust to changes in your drinking without feeling you've lost your identity, along with so many more ways we can learn about our drinking patterns and if we need to make changes. I did. The goal here is not to condemn anyone for drinking. We are simply here sharing stories, experiences and tools that helped us both have a healthier relationship with alcohol. This is a no judgement zone - EVER! We also hear Shelley's story behind her choice for her 7 years of sobriety. Trust me, you'll want to listen to this. She is one of the warmest humans you'll meet, someone that doesn't judge but still feels a passion to share her story in case you need it. Sometimes all it takes is knowing someone out there is by your side. At times we aren't in tune with our own mental health (we are consumed with so much!) and how we are traveling through our lives... until we hear a story and connect with it. I know I wouldn't be in tune with how my body was handling alcohol and the potential path I was traveling without Shelley and Kelley (see below for Kelley's info). Thank you for listening, sharing with someone you love and care about, talking about this with your closest friends, and supporting this podcast. Regular social drinking has become so normalized that many people find it more unusual when someone chooses not to drink outside of health or religious reasons. Maybe you've had a few too many hangovers lately and are fed up with the morning fuzziness and vague headache that follow your nightly glass or two of wine? Maybe you are beginning to question if or how alcohol should have a place in your life anymore? In this week's episode, Brandi and Tina are joined by special co-host Chris Fuste as we discuss our take on the book "Quit Like a Woman " by Holly WhitakerWe discuss the impact alcohol has had on our culture, and it's particular impact on women. We discuss how the industry (patriarchy) has lead us to believe that regular, and frequent, consumption of  "Mommy Juice" is not only OK, but encouraged.  Brandi and Tina discuss the role alcohol has played out in their lives as Chris shares her journey from being labeled "addict" and attending AA for years, to testing the waters with wine, to how she determined that alcohol really had no place in her life at all.  No matter your take, the book is worth a read, and this podcast worth a listen, to educate yourself and make the decision that is best for you. This is an important episode. In this conversation with Emily Lynn Paulson and Celeste Yvonne, we’re discussing the prevalence of the “mommy juice” culture, the jokes, memes, and idea that parenthood requires drinking for survival. Both openly sober for years, Emily and Celeste created the Sober Mom Squad, a community created during the COVID-19 pandemic that hosts weekly free virtual meetings to discuss motherhood and our transitions to new family dynamics and homeschooling. In the episode, Emily and Celeste share their (very different) personal stories, and offer tips and thoughts on coping through a pandemic and during the holiday season without using alcohol. Please note: I am not sober. I drink alcohol. But I have also become concerned with the motherhood culture that pushes drinking as a means to deal with anything hard. I originally recorded this episode as a BONUS, but decided it was such an important topic that I wanted it to land in as many ears as possible. What I’m hoping you’ll hear in this conversation with Emily and Yvonne is just an invitation to think about alcohol differently. Full show notes here. Find out more about Sober Mom Squad. The Hello Someday Podcast
Ep. 18: Kristi Coulter on Drinking, Working + "Being A First World Woman"

The Hello Someday Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2020 97:25

If you're a woman who's trying to quit drinking it's normal to look around and suddenly realize that booze is all around you.    There's Rosé All Day, Hot Yoga and Happy Hour,  beer at the finish line of the 10K and “Mommy Juice” at playdates with the kids.   You look up from your wine glass to see that everyone around you is drinking, all the time.    We live in a culture that tells women that drinking is their treat for getting through the day. It's our reward for working so hard and taking care of our kids.    We're told alcohol is what we should consume to be ‘cool' and ‘relaxed' and ‘fun'.  We're taught that drinking will make us less frustrated, less angry, less tired, less bored with the monotony of adulting.    And then we blame ourselves for not being able to ‘moderate' or ‘cut back' or ‘drink less' of an addictive substance.   In today's episode I have a long conversation with a friend and one of my favorite authors, Kristi Coulter, about Working, Drinking and Being a “First World Woman”.    Kristi spent 12 years as an executive at Amazon.com, and for many years working and drinking went hand-in-hand as a successful working woman.    Then Kristi quit drinking and took an insightful, funny, feminist look around her and wrote about what she observed.    Her incredibly popular essay on her experiences in early sobriety, Enjoli, went viral with 700,000 downloads. It struck a nerve with both women (and men) as she talked about dog paddling through the world newly sober.    Kristi's book, the 2018 memoir-in-essays Nothing Good Can Come from This, goes even further into life as a modern woman in a drinking world and what happens when you decide to put down your wine glass.     Kristi and I talk about: Why women drink as a signifier for free time and self care and conversations - the luxuries we can't afford. The myth of meritocracy at male dominated workplaces, and how it gaslights women into thinking it's their fault for failing to achieve what their male coworkers do - in a system that's stacked against them.  Why moderation sucks and why it's just so much easier to not drink.  Why most women make the mistake of waiting to “want” to stop drinking and how that's a recipe for staying stuck in the drinking cycle.  How stopping drinking is a superpower that allows women to ask for what they deserve and say what they mean.  Why drinking is not serving you if you're wanting to advance your career   About Kristi Coulter Kristi Coulter is the author of the 2018 memoir-in-essays Nothing Good Can Come from This, a writer who is currently working on her next memoir - Exit Interview - about gender, ambition, and her twelve-year stint as an executive at Amazon, and a former drinker. Four years ago (in 2016) Kristi published an article on Medium that went viral and changed the course of her life. "Enjoli" is an essay about what happened after Kristi decided to stop drinking and realized that all the women around her were tanked. It hit a nerve among women (and men) around the world and has now been downloaded over 700,000 times. Kristi's work has appeared in The Paris Review, New York Magazine/The Cut, Elle, Amazon Original Stories, Glamour, Vox, and elsewhere.   Shownotes: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/18 Grab your  Free Sober Girls Guide To Quitting Drinking   Links and Resources mentioned in this episode Nothing Good Can Come From This by Kristi Coulter: https://www.amazon.com/Nothing-Good-Can-Come-This/dp/0374286205 Enjoli essay on Medium:https://humanparts.medium.com/https-medium-com-kristicoulter-the-24-hour-woman-3425ca5be19f The Otter Of Sobriety Essay (Want Not): https://medium.com/@kristicoulter/the-otter-of-sobriety-f7065c29b764#.x6a24bxbx Since Right Now Podcast Interview with Kristi Coulter: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/klen-sobr/since-right-now/e/1617-kristi-coulter-offdry-44143811 Belle Robertson Tired of Thinking About Drinking (Book) Belle Robertson Tired of Thinking About Drinking (Website)   Connect with Kristi Coulter Website: http://www.kristicoulter.com Off-Dry Blog: https://offdry.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kristicoulter Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kristicccoulter/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/KristiCCoulter   Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson   www.hellosomedaycoaching.com Casey @ Hello Someday Coaching (@caseymdavidson) Listen to more podcast episodes to drink less + live more.

Episode 50! The lost-but-not-really-lost episode of Buzzkill Pod! I reflect on this new episode and the NEW podcast that is to come. And as for the topic...ouch! I take on the juggernaut of Mommy Juice or the whole "Mommy Needs Wine" culture that seems to be pervasive on social media and beyond. Is it healthy? Or is it dangerous?

Inspired by our IRL time together, we dig into sleepover dinner ideas and ways to make cooking for a gaggle of kids easier. We also touch on “Mommy Juice” culture, because we get it. Wine to relax: who doesn't want that? Well, lots of people, including sober parents. So is the whole “Mommy Juice” trope problematic, or are we taking things too seriously? This time, we have a strong opinion. #SorryNotSorry

Vox Lux or Vox Sucks? In Cinema Girls we breakdown the new film by Brady Corbet. Or is it by Sia? Is the film about Sia? This is officially one of Lily’s favourite films ever, and the Cinema Girls have a lot to say about it. What does it take to be Natalie Portman? And, also, is Jack Sia? The resemblance is uncanny. The CGs also eat chips during this episode and drink Mommy Juice - which is Lily talk for Red Bull. Special Thanks as always to Gussy for their track Mornings to open up the episode xxx

Hear about a phantom bear, see a stringy-haired demon woman LURKING, and go over to the instagram to see a video of a baby being straight up possessed by a flippin evil spirit! Oh god, get mommy her sippy, baby; this playdate just got REAL. . This week Steph and Abby discuss a Medium post that's been floating around for a while about a woman writing about her summer of sobriety and being a woman in a drunk world. Abby wants to chat about the parent angle to this story --- being a mom or dad in an alcohol-fueled world. Do we "need" to drink to make our lives better as parents? Are we trying to fit into some sort of cultural model of parenthood (moms drink wine, dads drink beer) or do some of us just want a drink? Is that OK? You tell us - handsoffparents@gmail.com

Alie has spent the last 13 years sober. She realized in her mid-twenties that she was powerless to alcohol, and decided to stop drinking completely in order to have a fulfilling life. She got married sober and her children have never seen her drink. In this episode, Alie and I talk about finding sobriety early in life, and how grateful we are that we quit drinking before children. We also talk about how hard it is to "come clean" to new mom friends about our sobriety, and navigating in a culture that suggests that "Mommy Juice" is the norm.
