Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol free life!

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 19, 2023 61:34

My guest this week is Tribe member Suzanna Poroski - a dance, a choreographer, a singer and a piano player! She's recently celebrated her first Soberversary so I began our conversation by her to introduce herself In this episode:- Suzanna's first experience of alcohol was at the age of 14 when she got into her father's brandy Rather than being repulsed by the taste of it she actually drank it until she blacked out As Suzanna said enthusiasm for alcohol after the very first drink is a warning sign of possible problems in the future She also remembers leaving school at lunchtime to drink beers at a friend's house Her father was a drinker and her parents divorced when she was 13 - Suzanna left home at an early age Fiercely independent with an obsessive need to be liked she would go drinking with her friends in bars at the age of 16 – then bring people back to her place for drinks Drinking and driving was normalized in her friendship group Suzanna worked as a choreographer at Club Med in Bermuda and created a rule around her drinking She would only drink every second night – just like the teenage drinking, making rules around our drinking are a sign of dependence Suzanna describes Club Med as a breeding ground for alcoholics - when she left at the age of 30 she assumed that her drinking patterns would go back to "normal" As a child of an alcoholic Suzanna was familiar with the 12 steps from her Alateen meetings so when her own drinking started to escalate she went to AA As a dancer she was under huge pressure to stay slim so also struggled with her eating patterns so she went to Overeaters Anonymous as well! She did achieve period of sobriety via AA but also had some bad drinking episodes Like the time she was driving a rented car and woke up after a blackout with no memory of where she'd parked the car Or the time when she was so shaken by a drunk driving episode that she had to sleep with the lights and tv on for fear of lying in the dark and going into her own head as she puts it – the “bad neighbourhood” I think she called it! She was in New York on 9/11 so although she wasn't directly affected just like the rest of the world she was shocked and horrified Suzanna lost her job as a result of 9/11 which meant she could stay in her apartment – eating drinking and watching Netflix – trying to numb her feelings She got to a point where the drinking just wasn't working anymore so she managed quite lengthy spells of sobriety but always went back to drinking In 2014 she lost her business so once more turned to Netflix, drinking and food to cope She did manage to quit drinking but replaced it with an obsessive running routine – 5 miles a day and only missing a few days in 17 months She managed almost 3 years in sobriety with AA and then had a slip up… At Tribe Sober we often talk about “uncoupling positive experiences from alcohol” – the classic one here in South Africa is “I can't enjoy the sunset without a glass of wine” – of course we have to replace those patterns with more healthy habits like “watching the sunset with an alcohol free drink”! So back to Suzanna's slip up – she'd cleaned the house, done her hair and make up and was waiting for some guests to arrive – everything was good and she felt an irrational urge to celebrate with a drink that had been left over from a previous party… That's when she started to wonder if AA was no longer working for her She dived into the quitlit and started to explore different approaches At the same time she felt her body was no longer tolerating alcohol like it used to… and giving her physical feedback that life would be better sober She still had a mental struggle going on, the cognitive dissonance that so many of us are familiar with – our conscious mind telling us to quit and being challenged by our subconscious beliefs that we need alcohol to enjoy our lives At Tribe Sober we talk about our “Not This” moment Suzanna had her "Not This" moment when she was walking along a beautiful beach but rather than basking in the beauty of her surroundings her mind was occupied with finding a little bar where she could drink her wine This made her so angry she decided she was done As she said “alcohol is insidious – the way it slowly becomes your everything” Suzanna talked about the Tipping Point that we get to when we've been trying to quit drinking for years and then one day something shifts and everything falls into place All the Sober Stretches you've done, all the quitlit you've read, all the conversations come together and bring about a shift.. We hear this a lot at Tribe Sober and as Suzanna said it's the reason why we must never stop trying – it will work in the end I love what she said about her personal Tipping Point “it came in quietly, I didn't tell anybody, I just knew…and I felt a quiet strength” Suzanna discovered Tribe Sober via this podcast As a result of the podcast she emailed me for the pdf of our Annual Tracker – if you'd like an Annual Tracker just email membership@tribesober.com and Sue will send you one Over the last year Suzanna's been throwing the book at her sobriety – she's been to our Zoom Cafes and participated in the chatrooms – she's still reading the Quitlit and like me she's a great fan of Kristi Coulter I'm going to put a link to Kristi Coulters brilliant essay called Enjoli in the shownotes – it's a must read for anyone on this journey She also wrote her Goodbye to Alcohol letter which is on our website  After a year of sobriety Suzanna is experiencing many benefits but she highlighted self respect, the joy of mornings and the connection with her children. Her advice to anyone considering this journey is to reach out to someone you trust and be accountable So many of us tried to achieve sobriety alone but as she said the trouble with that is that it's so easy to cave when its only you who knows you are trying to quit So if you're ready to be accountable then just go to tribesober.com and hit join our tribe Suzanna has now trained as a coach so if you'd like more info about that go to her Facebook page and send her a whatsapp or you can email her at coachingwithsuzanna@gmail.com  More Info Subscription membership – you can join up HERE. 'Burnout isn't just overwork; it's lack of reward,' - Dr. Jacqueline Kerr The cultural shifts that began in the late 60s and continued through the 70s brought new liberation for women. But with that came ads like Enjoli's "Because I'm a Woman," which conditioned women to believe we had to do it all—sending us on a never-ending quest to achieve more each day. These days, busyness is a lifestyle, and burnout has become part of the norm. But burnout can lead to BIG problems, like relationship deterioration, depression, substance abuse, and even illness.  So, how can we stop being seduced by today's busyness culture? Dr. Jacqueline Kerr is a mom, behavior scientist, and burnout survivor. In 2018, she left her position as a public health professor and began the fight to dismantle working mom burnout. Through her TEDx talk and her podcast Overcoming Working Mom Burnout, she provides information and solutions we can all use to change the social norms around burnout. On this episode of Wickedly Smart Women, Jacqueline joins Anjel to share how burnout forced her to leave her position as a public health professor, where she was in the top 1% of most cited scientists worldwide. She'll walk us through why the culture of busyness is so damaging and the most important thing we can do when facing parental burnout. Listen in as Jacqueline shares the techniques she uses to help her clients recognize the earliest signs and take steps to 'stop burnout before it starts.' What You Will Learn What led to Jacqueline's burnout Why the culture of busyness is so damaging The 3 stages of burnout Why burnout occurs more often in countries where we expect gender equality (and it doesn't yet exist) Why we seldom ask for help when we're facing parental burnout How parental burnout harms children How to recognize the earliest signs of burnout The most important thing to do when you're feeling depleted How to determine where you're overexerting yourself 3 clues that you are headed toward burnout Connect with Dr. Jacqueline Kerr Dr. Jacqueline Kerr Resources How To Stop Burnout Before It Starts | Jacqueline Kerr | TEDxMcMasterU Overcoming Working Mom Burnout Mindset: The New Psychology of Success The Wealthy Life Readiness Quiz Connect with Anjel B. What we drink and how we drink is often deeply intertwined with the image and personality we present to the world, and can also be a part of our own internal identity.    As Kristi Coulter wrote in her essay Enjoli, what we drink can be a shorthand for who we are… “A woman with a single-malt scotch is bold and discerning and might fire you from her life if you fuck with her. A woman with a PBR is a Cool Girl who will not be shamed for belching. A woman drinking MommyJuice wine is saying she's more than the unpaid labor she gave birth to.”   Drinking influences our relationships and interactions. It colors what we do, who we spend time with, what we tolerate and the types of boundaries we set (and often the ones we don't set).    And, when you're ready to stop drinking, there are growing pains related to releasing your past identity as a drinker, as well as relationships and behaviors that may no longer be serving you.   My guest today is Hailey Magee. She's a Codependency Recovery Coach who helps individuals of all ages break the people-pleasing pattern, set empowered boundaries, and master the art of speaking their truth.   For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in the episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/106   Ready to drink less + live more? In his legislative petition of 1785, Abraham Skipwith says, “Do not reference me as a slave. I am a man.” It was Skipwith’s autonomy, audacity, entrepreneurship and vision for creating his own economic stability and generational wealth that shaped so much of the Jackson Ward community of Richmond. While on their journey and discovery of the history of Jackson Ward, sisters Enjoli and Dr. Seisha Moon found Skipwith’s story to be the north star of what would lead the Ward to be known as the Black Wall Street. This conversation talks about the lasting legacy of Abraham Skipwith and the effort to have his estate returned to Jackson Ward. What was meant to begin as a simple Google search to learn the history of a historically black neighborhood, led sisters Enjoli and Dr. Seisha Moon down a rabbit hole that included The Richmond Times-Dispatch and Valentine Museum to open their archives for continual research that ultimately lead to the re-framing and updates to the history of the Jackson Ward neighborhood. The project sheds light on how the true history of a place is too often painted over and how reparative historic preservation can restore pride and appreciation for the past and outlook for the future. Good morning, RVA! It's 77 °F, and you should expect more of this week's hot weather until this evening—and then you should expect some rain to roll through. Highs tomorrow, though, look like they'll stay below 80 °F!Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports the seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths as: 172, 16, and 6.7, respectively. VDH reports a seven-day average of 17.1 new cases in and around Richmond (Richmond: -2; Henrico: 15, and Chesterfield: 4.1). Since this pandemic began, 1,359 people have died in the Richmond region. 46.7%, 58.4%, and 55.0% of the population in Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Yep, Richmond is once again reporting a negative 7-day average of new cases. VDH reports that the city now has had 17,139 total cases of COVID-19—the exact same number they reported back on June 10th (and again on June 14th and June 17th). Perhaps if you're trying to get a feel for the amount of community spread of the disease (something Emily Oster recommends as a starting point to assess the risks of various coronadecisions) you're better off using the regional case count. As of today, adult use of marijuana is now legal in Virginia. Things you can now do: have up to an ounce of marijuana; use marijuana in your private residence; grow up to four plants in your private residence; and share marijuana with an adult friend (as long as you're not pulling any ”marijuana is given away contemporaneously with another reciprocal transaction between the same parties” shenanigans). Things you still cannot (or should not) do: sell marijuana, drive while high, have marijuana on school property, or use marijuana in public. The state's new website, cannabis.virginia.gov, has a good FAQ that you should read. I still have a hard time believing that URL and its weed leaf favicon exists. Mel Leonor at the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports on reactions from a bunch of folks hoping to grow—or make money off of folks hoping to grow—and a nice look at what's next for the General Assembly to tackle while we wait the interminable amount of time until legal sales start happening in 2024. I still say something changes to shift that 2024 timeline forward. Spending three years in this weird in-between space just seems untenable! And I'm not the only one, the Virginia Mercury's Ned Oliver reports that Virginia NORML's 2022 legislative priority is “to expedite retail access for adult consumers, both through already operational medical dispensaries and by moving up the date VCCA can begin issuing new licenses.”Also, as of today, you can no longer keep a box turtle as a pet. Rex Springston has the details in the Virginia Mercury.Via /r/rva, a picture of yesterday's train derailment down at Rocketts Landing, news I first heard about from this jarring GRTC tweet: “ATTENTION GRTC PULSE RIDERS, WE CANNOT SERVICE THE ROCKETTS LANDING STATION DUE TO AN TRAIN ACCIDENT.” This is the second derailment in, what, about a month?Today at 3:30 PM, the Library of Virginia will host a panel discussion about Virginia's 1971 Constitution. Through the project, they hope to educate people on the overlooked history of Jackson Ward, which dates to April 17, 1871, and had a pivotal role in the Black American experience. The sisters are currently working to rename Jackson Ward's streets to honor some notable Black Richmonders, such as Maggie L. My guest on the show today, Ms. Michelle Enjoli Beato is a bilingual international speaker and career coach who motivates and teaches strategies on how to successfully connect to career and business opportunities. A first-generation American born to parents from the Dominican Republic, growing up in a dynamic environment, she understood early on in life the importance of connecting with other people from all over the world. She has leveraged those connections and has worked for global brands in television broadcasting like Univision, Telemundo, ABC, NBC, and CBS and marketing positions for Mercedes-Benz USA and Delta Air Lines. In 2016, she created the first all-inclusive business resource group at Mercedes-Benz USA in order to help connect leaders and professionals with each other for growth and development. This position helped her continue to expand on this work and she created her second dream job with the launch of Connect with Michelle Enjoli where she teaches about the power of connecting with ourselves and the power of networking with others. On the show today Michelle discusses advice for those wanting to start their own business or pursue a career change, how having coffee with others can help you land new job opportunities, the power of learning from and assisting others, the most important connection to make for success and how failure helps us to become resilient. This interview was filled with so many nuggets of wisdom and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Tune in now to hear Michelle's take on making connections.“Communication and connecting with people are so important because you have to stay relevant. You have to stay interested in educating yourself because that's how you will continuously move forward or be able to move forward when something unexpected happens.”- Michelle Enjoli BeatoDon't forget to rate us, review and subscribe to the show so that you always know when a new episode is available. For today's show notes head to this link: https://lenalivinsky.com/michelleenjolibeato/Send Lena a DM to let her know what you think about the show, or to inquire about being a guest! https://www.instagram.com/accentedworldpodcast/https://www.instagram.com/lena.livinsky/

You read that right… in 2019! We, as women, need to work together to claim our chunk of that 500+ billion dollars that is just sitting there for us in 2021. How can we make this happen? Your Mindset Having the right mindset is critical to success. Who is it that you want to be? Ep. 18: Kristi Coulter on Drinking, Working + "Being A First World Woman"

The Hello Someday Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2020 97:25

If you're a woman who's trying to quit drinking it's normal to look around and suddenly realize that booze is all around you.    There's Rosé All Day, Hot Yoga and Happy Hour,  beer at the finish line of the 10K and “Mommy Juice” at playdates with the kids.   You look up from your wine glass to see that everyone around you is drinking, all the time.    We live in a culture that tells women that drinking is their treat for getting through the day. It's our reward for working so hard and taking care of our kids.    We're told alcohol is what we should consume to be ‘cool' and ‘relaxed' and ‘fun'.  We're taught that drinking will make us less frustrated, less angry, less tired, less bored with the monotony of adulting.    And then we blame ourselves for not being able to ‘moderate' or ‘cut back' or ‘drink less' of an addictive substance.   In today's episode I have a long conversation with a friend and one of my favorite authors, Kristi Coulter, about Working, Drinking and Being a “First World Woman”.    Kristi spent 12 years as an executive at Amazon.com, and for many years working and drinking went hand-in-hand as a successful working woman.    Then Kristi quit drinking and took an insightful, funny, feminist look around her and wrote about what she observed.    Her incredibly popular essay on her experiences in early sobriety, Enjoli, went viral with 700,000 downloads. It struck a nerve with both women (and men) as she talked about dog paddling through the world newly sober.    Kristi's book, the 2018 memoir-in-essays Nothing Good Can Come from This, goes even further into life as a modern woman in a drinking world and what happens when you decide to put down your wine glass.     Kristi and I talk about: Why women drink as a signifier for free time and self care and conversations - the luxuries we can't afford. The myth of meritocracy at male dominated workplaces, and how it gaslights women into thinking it's their fault for failing to achieve what their male coworkers do - in a system that's stacked against them.  Why moderation sucks and why it's just so much easier to not drink.  Why most women make the mistake of waiting to “want” to stop drinking and how that's a recipe for staying stuck in the drinking cycle.  How stopping drinking is a superpower that allows women to ask for what they deserve and say what they mean.  Why drinking is not serving you if you're wanting to advance your career   About Kristi Coulter Kristi Coulter is the author of the 2018 memoir-in-essays Nothing Good Can Come from This, a writer who is currently working on her next memoir - Exit Interview - about gender, ambition, and her twelve-year stint as an executive at Amazon, and a former drinker. Four years ago (in 2016) Kristi published an article on Medium that went viral and changed the course of her life. "Enjoli" is an essay about what happened after Kristi decided to stop drinking and realized that all the women around her were tanked. It hit a nerve among women (and men) around the world and has now been downloaded over 700,000 times. Kristi's work has appeared in The Paris Review, New York Magazine/The Cut, Elle, Amazon Original Stories, Glamour, Vox, and elsewhere.   Shownotes: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/18 Grab your  Free Sober Girls Guide To Quitting Drinking   Links and Resources mentioned in this episode Nothing Good Can Come From This by Kristi Coulter: https://www.amazon.com/Nothing-Good-Can-Come-This/dp/0374286205 Enjoli essay on Medium:https://humanparts.medium.com/https-medium-com-kristicoulter-the-24-hour-woman-3425ca5be19f The Otter Of Sobriety Essay (Want Not): https://medium.com/@kristicoulter/the-otter-of-sobriety-f7065c29b764#.x6a24bxbx Since Right Now Podcast Interview with Kristi Coulter: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/klen-sobr/since-right-now/e/1617-kristi-coulter-offdry-44143811 Belle Robertson Tired of Thinking About Drinking (Book) Belle Robertson Tired of Thinking About Drinking (Website)   Connect with Kristi Coulter Website: http://www.kristicoulter.com Off-Dry Blog: https://offdry.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kristicoulter Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kristicccoulter/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/KristiCCoulter   Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson   www.hellosomedaycoaching.com Casey @ Hello Someday Coaching (@caseymdavidson) Listen to more podcast episodes to drink less + live more.

This week, Playback is a throwback, but the story timeless. Society is fine-tuned for hardworking women — executives, moms, daughters, creatives, and yogis alike — to get drunk. In “Enjoli,” writer and former Amazon employee Kristi Coulter constructs a diary that turns into a radical reframing of what a “having it all” culture actually looks like: socially accepted forms of alcohol dependence in overspent women. “I’m newly sober and dog-paddling through the booze all around me,” Kristi begins. The story, which went viral when it was published on Medium two years ago, is full of sharpness, tenderness, hilarity, and real anguish — and not just for Kristi’s own experiences, but also for the realities of the “24-hour women” around her, prodded and medicated with wine and cocktails every color of the rainbow at every moment of the day.

Kristi and I had such a good conversation that lasted about 2 hours. We talked about her essay "Enjoli - read it at http://bit.ly/KristiEnjoli,why you're never too old to start over, and much more.  Kristi is a writer and soon-to-be author who penned the (popular and somewhat controversial) essay "Enjoli" on Medium last summer. The response opened a floodgate of reactions from people discussing alcohol consumption, being sober, and how the choice plays into other aspects of life.  After reading the essay earlier this year, I was struck by both Kristi's writing style and her observations about alcohol and what it's done to us culturally.  Even if you don't "think" you have an alcohol problem, this episode is a good reflection on anything we consider to be a detriment or vice to well-being. I've thought deeply about it as it applies to a variety of areas of my life.
