In Heaven Everything is Fine
To mark the passing of David Lynch, we discuss his art and legacy. As I'm writing this, the White Sox just stopped an eight game slide (their first since 2018) with a win against the Royals, and thanks to a three-run home run by Andrew Vaughn. All I ask is that the White Sox score more runs, and prevent more runs, leading to more wins. Is that so much to ask? Anyway. This time, Chris (@gokuffy), Chris (@antoniuspius), and I continue our journey through David Lynch's filmography with The Straight Story. Then Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and I talk about Salaryman's Club. Made two random factual errors in this podcast. Iowa's area code is 712, not 714. 714 is California, and also where I worked, so I got confused. Also the miracle on ice was v. the Soviet Union, not Canada. I regret these errors. Listen Show notes: 0:34 - Chris, Chris, and I talk about The Straight Story 53:42 - Helen and I talk about Salaryman's Club Next time is Mullholland Drive and Your Lie in April

Merry Christmas and whatever you celebrate :) Interesting topic from Banes! It's his idea that sometimes the literal elements of a story (the plot etc.) are simply too weak to properly support the theme. He gives the example of The Truman show, where the idea is that a person is living a fake life under constant surveillance as the star of one of the most popular real life TV shows ever and he doesn't know anything about it… The themes are the power of the media, commercialism, the American dream, obsession with reality TV etc. Banes felt that although these themes were very strong the practical setup of the world and story weren't quite strong enough to support it. I remember feeling that way as well when I originally saw it. The universal obsession with the show and the practical challenges of setting up and maintaining that fraud for so long with all those people were all nonsensical. Good theme but they didn't think hard enough about the setting. This is an aspect we don't always think about! That's distinct from stories with a more symbolic setting like The 7th Seal, or Mullholland Drive because we know they are are not meant to be literal, there are more than enough cues! But when the literal aspects of the story are key to conveying the theme then they need to work. It's a very simple but powerful idea and helps you realise whey a lot of stories with big themes just don't quite gel or sit right: it's not you, it's them. This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to c h h t - Seriousness, sadness, blue strobes, faded scenes, isolation, concrete and plain facades. The lights are dim as twilight approaches. Night closes in and streetlights bloom with golden halos. Two strangers meet in the a circle of light glittering on the wet road. In this ep we review Mullholland Drive the mesmerizing film by David Lynch. We also talk about the weirdness of dreams.

This is a re-post of Episode 3 (from before horrorhaven.com lost all its files) in which Re-Gor and Spencey Domepiece discuss the classic 1982 film Poltergeist, and the lackluster (and highly unnecessary) 2015 remake. The remake is so forgettable that our intrepid hosts have trouble remembering the synopsis as they are doing it! One eggregious error we had was in discussing the cast, we neglected to talk about the late, great character actor James Karen who played Steve Freeling's boss, Mr. Teague. James had an illustrious career that spanned from 1948 to 2018! He was in tons of TV shows including, As the World Turns, Car 54 Where Are You?, The Bionic Woman, Hawaii 5-0, and the Jeffersons among many many others. Some of his film credits include, Capricorn One, The Jazz Singer (1980), The Return of the Living Dead I & II, and Mullholland Drive, just to name a few. Once you see him, you'll realize you've seen him in tons of stuff! If you want to chime in about the movies, please email us at thenisnow42@gmail.com or leave us a voicemail at 978-432-9079. Kaj nam torej sporočajo Lyncheva likovna dela? V kakšnem razmerju so do njegovega filmskega stvarjanja in kako dopolnjujejo oziroma nadgrajujejo celostno podobo umetnikovega opusa? – To so vprašanja, ki so nas zaposlovala v tokratnem Kulturnem fokusu. Z njim se je pogovarjal Goran Dekleva. foto: David Lynch - She Was Crying Just Outside the House, 1990, olje na platnu (Goran Dekleva)
