In this week's episode of Matt Likes Beer, Matt explores the timeless charm of Paulaner Münchner Lager, a staple in German brewing heritage and a commercial example of the Munich Helles style. Known for its balance of malty sweetness and subtle hop bitterness, this beer delivers exactly what you'd expect from a classic Bavarian lager. Matt dives into his experience with Paulaner Münchner Lager, sharing stories of local German beer gardens, the challenges of beer judging certification (BJCP), and why this beer made its way into his fridge for both podcasting and training purposes. Along the way, he reflects on how Paulaner stands out as a malt-forward lager with a crisp, clean finish and gives it an impressive BJCP-style evaluation score. But not everyone agrees with that assessment, Matt reads a few offbeat low-rated reviews and debunks some of their claims—like detecting "dirty alley notes"—all while considering what makes this beer a winner for malt-forward lager fans. Listen now on Neozaz.com, BigMonsterBrewing.com, or wherever you get your podcasts. Whether you're a lager lover or just curious about one of Munich's finest, this episode is worth a sip!

In this episode Bob and I keep crushing lagers. This week we travel to Munich, Germany and look into the Munich Helles lager. A beer for beer lovers, the German-style helles is a malt accented lager beer that balances a pleasant malt sweetness and body with floral Noble hops and restrained bitterness. The helles is a masterclass in restraint, subtly and drinkability which makes it an enduring style for true beer lovers and an elusive style for craft brewers to recreate. The German helles reminds beer lovers that the simple things in life are usually the most rewarding and worth pursuing. Style examples: 1. Masthead – Augenblick 2. Wooly Pig Farm Brewery – Rustic Helles 3. Noble Beast Brewing Co. – Third Dimension Helles ABV: 4.7-5.4% IBUs: 16-22 Color: 3-5 Serving Temp: 38-40F Serving Pressure: 7-12psi Beer Representation: Wanderer ABV: 5% IBUs: N/A Beer Description: Wanderer is our unfiltered German-style Helles Lager. A meticulous, highly technical beer brewed utilizing traditional techniques and ingredients, Wanderer is crisp, bright, and immensely enjoyable. Wanderer pours a brilliant straw gold color in the glass with a puffy, bright white foam. It carries a flavor profile of doughy malts, light straw, clean lager yeast, and just the right dash of zippy noble hops. Beers that command your attention are a wonderful thing. Beers that can fade into the background and sort of be an unspoken companion to celebratory moments in life are also a wonderful thing and deserve to be held in equally high esteem. As a crisp, highly drinkable, and beautifully executed beer, Wanderer fits this profile beautifully. Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. Commercial calibrations are one of our favorite segments on this show. Mainly because we can bill Justin for some of the best beers in any given style, but also we get the chance to examine some of these tentpole beers in ways we don't normally get the chance to. On today's show, we are drinking a commercial Munich Helles, which is always welcome here, and then we bust open one of Cooper's homebrews that he wants feedback on. And we're always ready to break that man down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In recent years strains and cultures of yeasts from Norway have started to get a lot of attention in the brewing world. Unlike other strains they ferment clean even at temperatures as high as 40°C! But can it make a good lager? Using a (sort of) traditional Munich Helles as a base and an isolated strain of Kveik, Mike hopes to find out.As usual, we brew one ourselves and talk about it, then try these examples:Hofmeister - Helles http://www.hofmeister.co.uk/And Union - Unfiltered Lager http://www.andunion.com/en/Boutilliers - Turtle Paradise http://www.boutilliers.com/* FINAL GRAVITY * We also try the Traditional Dark Mild from episode 19.
