Our quest to find the best flagship hazy IPA from Chicagoland breweries enters its fourth round, as we blindly sample through a fresh set of five to pick a winner that best fits our own personal preferences. And though our ability to guess blind beers is as bad as ever, our taste buds are finely tuned and finally ready to deliver a surprising upset on this episode. Also, we dream up some 80s-centric unexpected sports and celebrity pairings; we're reaching for the purple stuff over the Sunny D; and we might just let a fly determine the overall winner of this whole dang competition. Thirty nine episodes in and we finally do a gay themed episode of the show. About time too!Nighthawks (1978) was directed by Ron Peck and was based on a script developed by him and Paul Hallam. It stars Ken Robertson as Jim, a geography teacher at a London comprehensive school who spends his nights looking for love in gay bars, clubs and discos (discos were still a thing then). To talk about Nighthawks we're joined by Prof Glyn Davis of St Andrews University. Turns out he's not as Welsh as you expect him to be!Watch Nighthawks on the BFI Player or buy the DVD which has a ton of bonus features.Ron Peck named the film after Edward Hopper's 1942 painting. This is just episode one, of QueerAF's new podcast about Monkeypox. it has stories and resources without shame or stigma - "It's what I wish I'd had." Listen to the whole series by searching 'What The Pox?'... Monkeypox. That's what What The Pox? is all about - a ‘poxcast' if you will. Quite a lot of people have got it or had it at this point. I'm one of them. And it was not fun. When I was home alone with Monkeypox in all kinds of pain, feeling scared and alone I had very little information. So I went online to find help. And guess what? There wasn't much official advice. But I did start talking to all kinds of people: experts, people who've had the virus, and to those who see this outbreak as part of a much bigger picture. We've spoken to those on the frontline of the response, and trying to understand this virus, including at 56 Dean Street, NAM Aidsmap, Prepster, Love Tank, London School of Hygine and Tropical Medicine and many more. It features contributors from the UK and US. What The Pox is the information and support I wish I had at my disposal when I was going through Monkeypox.Monkeypox is spreading worldwide - and for many of us queer people, the response feels a bit too familiar. You see history rarely repeats - but it often rhymes.Tune in to steal our insight on this virus, what it means for our community and how we should handle it. Together, let's work out just What The Pox? is going on?Listen to understand:What we know about the virus, and how it spreadsWhy we feel shame and stigma about catching itWhat the parallels are with the HIV outbreak in the 80sWhy this sits in a bigger picture with conversations about queer sex and health inequalitiesAnd crucially: What can we do next?Because before you start listening: I'll let you in on a secret - we have the tools to manage this outbreak; we've just got to use them.It comes out every Wednesday, or you can sign up to support our show - and unlock all the episodes as soon as they are ready in the archive coming soon below. The first episode is out 7 Sep, 2022.Let's keep the conversation frank, honest, open and alive. Because, to borrow a phrase, silence = pox.Hosted by me, Martin Joseph, an award-winning podcaster and comedian. What The Pox? is a QueerAF production. Welcome to https://www.inthekeyofq.com/ (In the Key of Q) the weekly podcast where I chat with inspiring Queer musicians from around the world as they share stories, inspirations and of course their music. Levi Kreis is a multi-award winner. Having gathered himself awards from https://criticscircle.org.uk/ (Critic's Circle), Out Music, and most excitingly, the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHrFrqB48wk (Tony's). Born in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba9mWXtGU4g (Oliver Springs), Tennessee his music features a fusion of styles influenced by gospel, country, bluegrass, and even rockabilly. He says of his career, "I've always believed that our mess is our ministry. I may be more candid than the next guy about my obstacles and struggles. I am not interested in painting a perfect picture for the world to see not when people all around me need to know how to turn their pain into personal power. The driving force behind all that I do is narrow and define. I want to heal." Even as a kid Levi had an eye for business. When offered a dollar to sing in the church for God, he suggests off the bat that given two he'd sing for Jesus as well! His deep relationship with the church and his amazing voice he was offered a lucrative gospel record contract. The contract vanished when he was outed by a betrayal within the church. Maybe it wasn't a bad thing as from the age of eight it taught him that his queerness was "detestable in the eye of god". Falling into a domestically abusive relationship, Levi's mother works out that his violent "flatmate" is actually his lover. Whilst she appears to rescue him from harm's way, she resolves the 'rescue' with a promise that his devilish homosexual ways will lead to https://www.aidsmap.com/about-hiv (an AIDS diagnosis and death). In search of community Kreis falls into the artificial comfort of https://www.aidsmap.com/news/feb-2013/crystal-meth-and-london-gay-men-examining-evidence (crystal meth), and as his addiction grows he somehow manages to win a Tony Award in 2010. Eventually breaking free from addiction he makes beautiful peace with his mistakes, his demons and wrong turns. "The truth is every pain brings you to power. Every mess is your voice to the world, and we need your voice." He is a true believer in the nature of things; the pattern of life. His career has since continued to grow including https://soundcloud.com/enrichedrecords/rich-b-vs-levi-kreis-ft-qboy-2 (a duet with alumni QBoy) and a lead role in the US touring production of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INqi7_7PlCs (Hadestown). Though comic book writer Alan Moore has officially finished his final projects and begun a well-deserved retirement from the medium of sequential art, he has also full turned his eye to, among other mediums, film — which, at least in adaptations, has treated him poorly. After a cycle of hometown prequel short films, some of which were gathered in the anthology feature Show Pieces, Moore's collaboration with Northampton director Mitch Jenkins was finally released in cinemas and VOD this fall: The Show. On this episode, I'm joined by comic book/film/TV/pop culture writer Rich Johnston to discuss:- how Moore's influence from film helped his innovative comics work from his career's outset;- what early projects, like his Fashion Beast screenplay, may have taught him of writing for film;- why his best adaptation might be a Justice League Unlimited episode;- and yet, why a string of insultingly stupid adaptations, ones that often completely ignored the source material, soured him on the medium for such a long period, leading to him taking his name off V for Vendetta, the Watchmens, and The Killing Joke.And:- How, by the way of Watchmen's flashback influence on Lost, Moore influenced all modern American television;- why The Show's funny world-building works better with subtitles and rewatches;- how Edgar Wright might have contributed to The Show finished film;- and why the proposal of its prequels, feature, and five seasons (with a pilot written by and those seasons plotted by Moore), leads to the promising prospect of Moore (and Jenkins) mastering the film medium.Rich Johnston is the founder of the Bleeding Cool website, is the longest-serving digital news reporter in the world (since 1992), and is author of The Flying Friar, Holed Up, The Avengefuls, Doctor Who: Room With A Deja Vu, The Many Murders Of Miss Cranbourne, and Chase Variant. He lives in South-West London, works from Blacks on Dean Street, shops at Piranha Comics, is a political cartoonist, and a father of two.The Show is available on VOD.

PREVIEW :: London A. Dark, the ZaZen Boy Detective :: 223C Baker Street :: In 1928, Sherlock Holmes’ younger, upstairs, gay neighbor secretly accepts many of Sherlock’s clients who come to the wrong address by mistake... In his hidden underground nightclub and gay sauna at 69 Dean Street in Soho, W1, London Dark practices the magical rituals of Ancient Tibetan ZaZen, and it is there he will soon meet his protégé and confidante, the Boy Jack Wilder...— London A. Dark, “ZaZen Secrets from the Dark”CHAPTER 5 :: “Dark Origins and the Engines of Dream”At 19, London A. Dark, ZaZen Gay Boy Detective was Scotland Yards’ youngest consulting detective, and also the least expensive, especially compared to his downstairs neighbour at 221 B Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes. The clickity-clank of the horse’s metal shoes echoing on each cobblestone down Dean Street revealed to the boy, London A. Dark exactly how many pints of double cream were left on the Milk Float drawn by the earliest horse every morning in Soho...The secrets of Ancient Tibetan ZaZen and the power to stop time allows London A. Dark to follow certain moments ensconced and pentangled in any TransFixed scene a certain distance, then into the past or future to spot for clues. Clues to some certain Mystery of the Universe as yet unexplored....This distance may be predicted with some certainty if the following equations are solved for local SpaceTime in your galaxy and a Time Map of all ground level Dark Matter Zones is close at hand.On Earth X, every subatomic particle created in Universe X was created with an equal and opposite bonded antimatter particle of the same type but with a reversed spin or charge. This Zero Sum design, in which each subatomic particle grouping, or Dirt, as it’s currently called in the London Royal Academy of Science, has a bonded particle of opposite power ensuring the Universe is stable, balanced and thus preventing the collapse of all galaxies into the black holes at their centrepoint. The ability of whole planets and giant stars to hang effortlessly in outer space depends on the total weight of the Universe being absolute zero. In this way, only a minor amount of gravity is required to hold the Galactic spiral arms filled with fringe stars and planets in place. Weightlessness in outer space includes everything, not only human beings... The Sun and Earth are equally weightless and floating in outer space. This system on balance prevents any galaxy unwinding itself or spiralling out of control. In his training in Ancient Tibet, London A. Dark was taught to bring the vibration of his consciousness to the highest harmonic wave emanated by Earth X... In doing so, the multiple harmonics become visible in the mind’s eye and the boy Dark is able to focus the power of ZaZen on the clearest tones, bringing them into his visual field like the dial on a telescope might bring the moon Titan into a detailed view on a cold, cloudless night in Greenwich Observatory. In Nanda Parbat, with the aid of an Ancient Tibetan Spinning Spiral Mandala, a 17 year old London A. Dark came to know Ptolemy’s Machine, the Organon Parallacticon, which resets the polar spin on the two hemispheres of one’s mind through the use of sound and vision projected by telepathy. This method of Machine induced enlightenment united with the power of ZaZen, altered the Dark boy’s relationship with time as it allowed tracers from the future falling backward In time to mix with with Tachyons, so as to appear visible in one’s mind in both dreams and in some forms of waking sight,... At the moment, though, a Holografix Code rotated counterintuitively in front of Dark’s eyes. He could see slipping into his view a telepathic text retyping itself into the light. “Text coming in backwards,” with his eyes shut, London read the words as they appeared one by one in his mind’s eye.“It is the hammer of dark people fear, not the unfolding of fear itself...”This message will seem clear to any avid reader of “The Chronicles of London A. Dark,” but as this slim volume of mostly romantic poems and sonnets written by the boy London A. Dark, to his one true love, Jack Wilder, is largely pornographic for Edwardian Times in England, reciting these strangely surreal epic montage like histories here, may seem ill advised for a gentleman of the times. The Holografix message, seemingly induced by the familiar forces of the Machine Parallacticon in Alexandria, Egypt, brought a brooding sense of unease to A. Dark’s previously confident strut...“Now who would be sending telepathic messages across time, from a machine long lost and abandoned during the great fire in the Library of Alexandria.” London A. Dark, was bemused at the thought of someone locating his position in the year 1928, in Soho, on Dean Street, at 8:38 in the morning... The Roman soldiers had angrily set fire to the library in Alexandria, after checking out several books and finding they could not read Egyptian Holografix by telepathy...The head librarian, Hypatia Theon, was captured by the soldiers and sentenced to death for the crime of witchcraft...

Young Southpaw chats to comedian and Whose Line Is It Anyway? star Greg Proops about late 70s concert adventures, life in London, Glasgow audiences, AC/DC, James Bond, and much more https://www.gregproops.com/ https://twitter.com/gregproops https://www.instagram.com/proopdog/ https://www.youngsouthpaw.com/ Greg Proops: I saw AC/DC in 1978. My cousin Donny and I drove down to San José. They weren’t headlining, if you can believe this. It was Ronnie Montrose. Ronnie Montrose with Gamma, this was after he was in Montrose with Sammy Hagar. AC/DC was the middle act, and that’s who we went to see. We dressed up at my house and I still have pictures of us, Polaroids. I found them again in my garage during the beginning of the containment, cause I was going through everything. We’re being total idiots in the pictures and I’m wearing like a tweed jacket and a long scarf, and Donny’s got a ruffled shirt on. So on the way down we’re smoking weed and Donny goes ‘let’s just pretend to be English the whole time and see if we can fool those motorheads’. And I’m like ‘I’ll do it’. So we get there, we put on these cod English accents, and everybody’s talking to us and asking us about England. And we’re just lying, right? (adopts British accent) ‘oh yeah, Brighton, yeah, it’s great’. So that was 45 minutes in line of just pretending. And because we looked so fruitopian, everybody was like ‘ok’. So AC/DC comes on and they were just sensational. They’re one of the best rock outfits. The first time I saw The Clash, The Ramones, and AC/DC were the most straight ahead fury. And really good. Bon had no shirt, the tightest jeans in the world, tennis shoes. Angus came out with the schoolboy uniform, the whole thing, with the bag and everything. And of course that’s shed, one by one by one. And there was no chanting ‘Angus’ in those days but we knew who he was. And the part of the show that blew everyone’s minds was, one, their attack. Phil, Malcolm, and Cliff in the back, then Bon up front with Angus as satellite. And they came at you. Angus never stopped banging his head. At a certain point you’re like ‘you must have brain damage’. So then Angus and Bon disappear from the stage and it’s just the three of them banging away. And everyone’s like ‘huh? what has happened?’ Cut to - great commotion towards the front of the stage. He had a sneaky cordless guitar with a radio transmitter, which was like unbelievably high tech in those days. This is the 70s. And Bon is carrying Angus on his shoulders like a child, and Angus is furiously headbanging, screaming away a solo, and he comes right through the crowd. Like the circus, like vaudeville. And people were just like (screams) ‘YES!’ It was the most awesome thing. Better than pyrotechnics. There were no flash pots, nothing. They were a straight, stripped down band with crappy lighting. And it was really exciting. Cause they’re rock n roll. And then Ronnie Montrose came on and we split. To show our contempt for him never being able to follow how awesome AC/DC were. So cut to the 90s, I’m drunk and I’m in England. I come home late and we’ve just gotten cable. They didn’t get cable until the 90s in England. So now we’ve got all these channels, and there was one channel that just showed old shows. And I’m kinda high, I’ve come home from a gig, I turn on the TV and it’s AC/DC from 1978, at a U.K. university. And as I watch, I realize I saw this set. It was very exciting. ..... Greg Proops: When I was seven, I had to go to Sunday School that year for some reason. My mother got a notion that it would be real important for me to get some churchin’. They bought me a little navy blue suit, with a white shirt and this clip-on tie. I’d wear it to church with dress shoes. And then when church was over in the afternoon, I’d go ‘can I keep the suit on? I just need to wear it for the rest of the day.’ Then I’d get my Star Trek tracer gun and (sings James Bond theme), all around the apartment building, in the pool, just shooting other kids with the tracer gun. But when you have the suit on, my small mind equated James Bond, Sean Connery, the suit, the gun, it was what you could aspire to be as a seven-year-old. A friend of my dad’s bought me the James Bond kit, this attaché that opened up, a knife came out one end, then there was a radio that turned into a machine gun, and a camera that turned into a Luger. That was pretty hot stuff. Young Southpaw: What’s your favourite Bond theme? GP: I’m partial to ‘Thunderball’, only because it’s not popular and no one ever plays it. The words are kinda weird, but I love how Tom Jones sings it. I think the two best are Shirley Bassey ones - ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Diamonds Are Forever’. ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ is a classy little song. I was glad they brought her back a bunch of times, that was great. The other one I really love is ‘License To Kill’. Because it has nothing to do with Bond at all, it’s just so awesome that they got Gladys Knight to do it..... There’s a curry on Dean Street in London that we always ate at, right around the corner from Whose Line’s executive offices. It was cheap and shitty, and we’d just guzzle beer because it was open late, the only places you could get beer late in the those days. I think the only record they had was the album of ‘License To Kill’. Cause every 15-20 minutes you heard ‘License To Kill’. And the first time we went there, my English friend Paul pointed out to me that on every single chorus Gladys Knight goes ‘I’ve got a license to kilt’. So have a listen, cause I’m pretty sure she does.

Peter Krashes' studio painting over the past decade stands as one complete body of artistic research growing directly out of his other practice as an unpaid community organizer in the Dean Street area of Prospect Heights in Brooklyn. As Peter says, "My work as an activist and my work as an artist extend from the same set of values. All of my works are derived from meetings I attend or events and initiatives I help organize. There is no room in political or governmental processes for many of the activities we involve ourselves in, but perhaps none more so than painting a nuanced image in the studio. As a result, the paintings are the last step in a process I have been engaged with from beginning to end. The imperatives I feel outside the studio are explicit so the outcome in the studio is particular and linked directly to the real world." Linking the practices of painting and of activism points out the problematic of actions that can be consumed, ignored, and considered irrelevant by those in official political power. Their human scale and material presence as paint on canvas positions these paintings outside the processes in which decisions are made instead of seeking recognition in political discourses of power. Taking a different approach to generating cultural power, Krashes has generated this body of paintings through working out questions that arise in his range of collaborative activist practices. For example, frustration with the narrow, sometimes apparently biased focus of the media has led Krashes to make paintings depicting the glare of cameras pointed in elected officials' faces or expansive interiors of government chambers with recurring images of empty microphones. He also paints the flipside of this equation, namely that individual voices speaking collectively can exercise power. Neighbors painting protest signs, children's face painting, Easter egg hunts, seedbombs tossed into empty lots, and block parties claim space—marking the presence of the communities willfully neglected by those in power. Brian spoke to Peter about his practice, his community activism and much more.

This episode of Busy Being Black contains references to situations and substances some might find uncomfortable to listen to. Living in the fullness of our queer Black lives means learning to live in the messiness. This was a lesson I learned as I dealt with my emotional fallout after watching Micheal Rice’s documentary, #parTyboi. #parTyboi explores and exposes the crystal meth epidemic that is ravaging the queer Black community in the US, and the price we, as a community and as individuals, pay living beyond the margins. Micheal's documentary so clearly illuminates the spaces and places where black and white lives collide, and the attendant devastation that results from the purchase of Black bodies to satiate white desires. facebook.com/partyboidocumentary/ instagram.com/micheal_rice BlackOut, Team PrEPster and 56 Dean Street have launched a survey to find out how chemsex is affecting queer Black folk in Britain. #chemsexwhileblack Take the survey and spread the word: https://blkoutuk.com/2018/04/06/read-whats-going-onchemsexwhileblack/ If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, check out the Westminster Drugs Project: http://www.wdp.org.uk/about-us To find drug and alcohol recovery meetings in a city near you: http://www.gayandsober.org/ Busy Being Black is the podcast exploring how we live in the fullness of our queer Black lives. In the summer of 2016, the world’s tallest modular building at 32 stories high was completed at 461 Dean Street in Brooklyn, NY. Once the building’s apartment modules were completed at a factory located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, they were transported to the development site and essentially stacked one on top of another into a high-rise building. To the dismay of its original backers, the building was delivered years late, riddled with construction problems, and the subject of a costly litigation. Still, excitement about modular construction in New York abounds with new projects under development. Interviewees Episode Excerpt U.S. Multi-Family Building If you were paying any attention to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, you would think that just about every factory in the United States has either left for China or is about to leave. But when it comes to factories that are currently building apartments, or will soon be building apartments, we’re probably just getting started with constructing these factories in the United States.S hipping costs make transporting building modules from overseas to the United States expensive. And while one Polish company has managed to successfully transport modules here, the transportation expense is likely to make this a predominantly local industry. That, along with undeniable demographic shifts afoot in the United States that will be pushing the demand much higher for multi-family buildings in urban areas, suggest that we may very well witness the transformation of American factory-built construction into a multi-billion dollar industry. Based on what world populations and growth rates suggest, you might think that the urgent need for urban housing over the next 30 years will largely be an African and Asian phenomenon. But the truth is that the migration to cities is also expected to happen right here at home. The United States Census Bureau provides statistics on the number of permits issued for new construction starts each year throughout the entire country. In 2015, 41% of permits were issued for structures that consisted of two or more units (referred to as a “multi-family residence”). Not exactly a screaming validation of my argument that you should be building modular multi-family buildings in cities when 59% of permits were for single-family residences. But let’s look at the trend line towards multi-family construction over the past 25 years. Again, from the United States Census Bureau’s website: In 1991, 21% of permits were for multi-family residences; In 2000, 25% of permits were for multi-family residences; In 2007, 30% of permits were for multi-family residences; And again, in 2015, 41% of permits were for multi-family residences. The rising trend of multi-family starts, as a percentage of total building starts, is unmistakeable. Here’s another interesting set of facts. The U.S. Census Bureau breaks down the multi-family residence into three categories: two units; three and four units; and five units and up: In 1991, 79% of the multi-family category permits were for buildings with five plus units; By 2015, 93% of permits in the multi-family category were for buildings with five plus units. As it turns out, if you’re an entrepreneur and thinking about factory-built housing in the United States, the biggest market to go after today is single-family homes. But if the trend towards urban development continues, the biggest market to attack will soon be for multi-family homes. In New York City, two companies began with a modular approach,

History The history of this beauty is a bit unusual. The Blue of Sint-Niklaas is one of the oldest rabbit breeds in the world. The Blue of Sint-Niklaas breed of rabbit originated in the Flemish city of Sint-Niklaas. Being bred since the nineteenth century, this rabbit breed is only recognized as being in the “Blue” category. Blue of Sint-NiklaasBlue of Sint-Niklaas (Dutch:Blauw van Sint-Niklaas) is a Flemish rabbit breed. It has been bred since the 19th century, near the city of Sint-Niklaas, to supply the local fur-industry, and is thereby one of the oldest fur-rabbit breeds of the world. The Van Beveren, also a fur-rabbit breed, is family and has been bred in the same region of Flanders, the Waasland. I covered the Beveren in another episode, which led me to the Blue of Sint-Niklass. These little blue beauties were a hot commodity when fur trade was still going strong in that area. Many of these little, beauties lost their lives for their meat and pelts. Originally, they were identical to the Blue van Beveren and also showed their typical mandolin -shaped physique. Which rabbit breeds except the van Beveren still were involved in the origin of the breed is not known, the size of the breed suggests that giant rabbits were used for breeding out. From the van Beveren, the blue of St. Niklaas originally distinguished by the white markings that were required at the beginning of the 20th century in the form of a forehead blaze. However, since it had not been possible to achieve this badge homozygous, the standard was amended in 1917, that the animals were required color. The sister race van Beveren has a distinctly different body shape and is slightly darker in color. The Blue of Vienna St. Niklaas. was especially bred for fur rabbits and was known for her coat quality. With the decline of the fur industry, the spread of the Blue of St. Niklaas decreased. The popularity of the breed decreased with the disappearance of the fur trade in the early 20th century. After the decrease of pelt-saling and fur-industries in the region (and the world) the breed became almost extinct, as it was not popular as a pet or meat-rabbit. Only a few European breeders in Belgium and France are left. There are few breeders left of Blue of Sint-Niklaas bunnies. The Blue of Sint-Niklaas rabbits are now very rare and possibly close to extinction. 1. Flanders – Flanders is the Dutch-speaking northern portion of Belgium, although there are several overlapping definitions, including ones related to culture, language, politics and history. It is one of the communities, regions and language areas of Belgium. The demonym associated with Flanders is Fleming, while the corresponding adjective is Flemish. In historical contexts, Flanders originally refers to the County of Flanders, which around AD 1000 stretched from the Strait of Dover to the Scheldt estuary. In accordance with late 20th century Belgian state reforms the area was made into two political entities: the "Flemish Community" and the "Flemish Region". These entities were merged, although geographically the Flemish Community, which has a broader cultural mandate, covers Brussels, whereas the Flemish Region does not. Flanders has figured prominently in European history. As a consequence, a very sophisticated culture developed, with impressive achievements in the arts and architecture, rivaling those of northern Italy. Belgium was one of the centres of the 19th century industrial revolution but Flanders was at first overtaken by French-speaking Wallonia. In the second half of the 20th century, however, Flanders' economy modernised rapidly, today Flanders is significantly more wealthy than its southern counterpart. Geographically, Flanders is generally flat, has a small section of coast on the North Sea. Much of Flanders is agriculturally fertile and densely populated, with a population density of almost 500 people per square kilometer. It touches France to the west near the coast, borders the Netherlands to the north and east, Wallonia to the south. The Brussels Capital Region is an enclave within the Flemish Region. It comprises 6.5 million Belgians who consider Dutch to be their mother tongue. Flanders – The Sack of Antwerp in 1576, in which about 7,000 people died. Flanders – Flag Flanders – Winter scene by Sebastian Vrancx, 1622 Flanders – 1609 map of the county of Flanders 2. Sint-Niklaas – Sint-Niklaas is a Belgian city and municipality located in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Belsele, Nieuwkerken-Waas, Sinaai. Sint-Niklaas is the capital and major city of the Waasland region straddling the East Flanders and Antwerp provinces. The city is known for having the largest square in Belgium. At one point this square also boasted the largest easter egg in Europe. Belsele was already mentioned in a 9th-century document. The new parish was to depend until the middle of the 16th century. However, it was part of the County of Flanders. The power of Flanders at that time favoured the economic development of the city, which became the administrative centre of the region in 1241. The city was never walled, which made an easy target for conquest. In 1381, it was engulfed by plundered. However, the central location of Sint-Niklaas between Ghent and Antwerp, far from the Scheldt, favoured further development. By 1513, Emperor Maximilian had granted the right to hold a weekly market. Around 1580, the church of Saint Nicholas suffered heavy damage from roving iconoclasts. The 17th century was generally a period of prosperity, marked by economic growth, mostly in the wool industries. Sint-Niklaas – Sint-Niklaas Sint-Niklaas – Sint-Niklaas Town Hall Sint-Niklaas – Church of Our Lady Overall Description Body Size-They can grow to an average of 10 to 12 pounds (5.4 kg). They are large in size similar to the Flemish Giant breed (which can grow to a whopping 15 pounds). Stature-The Blue of Sin-Niklaas is a generally “meaty-looking,” plump rabbit. Unlike wild rabbits, this breed tends to have chunky body, head and legs. Wilder rabbits tend to be lean with thinner legs. The weight of the animals is 4.5-6 kg, with an ideal of 5.5 kg. The body is stocky and cylindrical, viewed from above, the animals should act rectangular. The 14-16 cm long ears are worn V-shaped. The coat color of the breed is a very bright, steady blue. The eyes are blue-gray, the claw horn color. The breed is not allowed in Germany. ears and eyes Coat Coat-This rare breed of bunny, as imagined, has a beautiful coat. It is a thick, lush coat that is sometimes a creamy gray or bluish color. It would be hard for any rabbit breeder or bunny fanatic not to be able to identify this breed. The special color of the coat could be due to a unique mutation. Originally, the (Blue) Van Beveren and St Nicholas Blue were considered the same breed. Now that has changed and these two varieties are kept well apart in terms of shape, size, weight and color. colors Since 1917, Blauwe Van Sint Niklaas rabbits have all been the uniform blue-grey uniform color. care Bunnies can make great pets, no matter which breed you pick. However, before you run right out and grab a new furry buddy, do your research. Many people go out spontaneously (especially around Easter) to get a bunny. Yes, they are beautiful-but they do require upkeep. This upkeep can be time consuming and sometimes expensive. Be sure you are interested in the Blue of Sint-Niklaas because you genuinely want a pet to love and care for. Don’t let the Blue of Sint-Niklaas become part of a collection, a thing, just something you can say you have. Hopefully, you will choose your new, furry companion for the right reasons. He will give you companionship for years to come. diet Health Temperment/behavior If your Blue of Sint-Niklaas bunny is tame enough, he may be a good cuddler. The Blue of Sint-Niklaas breed could make great “showbunnies” if you’re into bunny beauty contests. Blauwe Van Sint Niklaas rabbits are quiet, good-natured and friendly animal that enjoys a spacious hutch. uses Rabbits tend to be bred for one of four things: meat, fur, show, or pet use. The St. Nik rabbit is referred to as an “All-Purpose Rabbit” because it fulfills all four of these purposes. It is a Multi-purpose rabbit, and It is a fine breed for either meat production or for showing, and they should also make for a great pet! Even though this is a large breed of rabbit, they are gentle and easily handled. This makes them good for pets or show rabbits as well as meat production. There are few breeders left of Blue of Sint-Niklaas bunnies. The Blue of Sint-Niklaas rabbits are now very rare and possibly close to extinction. . They are not on the endangered species list YET. The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) maintains the breed standard for all of the recognized rabbit and cavy breeds for it's international membership. Recognized breeds are eligible for Registration and Grand Champion recognition. The AMERICAN RABBIT BREEDERS ASSOCIATION, INC. is an organization dedicated to the promotion, development, and improvement of the domestic rabbit and cavy. With over 30,000 members throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad, its members range from the pet owner with one rabbit or cavy to the breeder or commercial rabbit raiser with several hundred animals. Each aspect of the rabbit and cavy industry, whether it be for fancy, as a pet, or for commercial value, is encouraged by the organization. The British Rabbit Council (BRC) is a British showing organization for rabbit breeders. Originally founded as The Beveren Club in 1918, its name first changed to British Fur Rabbit Society and finally to The British Rabbit Society. Today, the BRC among other things investigates rabbit diseases, maintains a catalog of rabbit breeds, and sets rules for about 1,000 rabbit shows annually in the UK. Owners of house rabbits are also encouraged to join the organization to learn how to care optimally for their pets. “Presented” means that they are there on exhibit for the ARBA committee to see and vote on if they would like to accept the new breed. Erected with the rest of the building in 1901, locals tell a tale of grave robbers who were running rampant in the area until one dark night the fanged beastie rose on the door opposite the graveyard as if to scare off future robbers. Less superstitiously, it has also been theorized that the vampire rabbit is in fact a hare whose ears were mistakenly put on backwards. If this were the case the bloody little creature could have been installed to reference Sir George Hare Phipson, a local doctor, Freemason, and friend of the cathedral’s architect. Most basically the rabbit could simply be meant to represent the coming of spring, invoking the same symbolic association that created the Easter Bunny. While the vampire rabbit of Newcastle was originally the same sandy color of the surrounding stonework, in modern times it has been painted a menacing black with droplets of blood staining its teeth and claws. http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-vampire-rabbit-of-newcastle If it is a hare, it could have been a quirky reference to a doctor in Newcastle at the time called Sir George Hare Phipson, also founder of Durham Masonic Hall, who was a friend of William H Wood, one of trio of architects behind the Cathedral Buildings adjacent to St Nicholas’. Wood may have been a freemason himself and hares appear in masonic symbolism. Or maybe the carving was a touch of Mad March Hare humour from the architects; the others being Thomas Oliver and John Leeson who, with Wood, transformed the west side of Dean Street from Mosely Street to The Side during those years. A decade ago the Vampire Rabbit enjoyed a brief moment in the limelight when it formed part of a light festival. During a winter Glow event in 2006, the carving was illuminated in pink, making it look even more weird and wonderful, and there were projections of it across the city. With so little known about the carving, there had been an appeal the previous year for any information about it to be included in an online archive involving Tyne and Wear Archive and Museums and Newcastle University. But the rabbit, which has had a few licks of paint over the years, including being turned black with its teeth, eyes and claws picked out in red, still retains its air of mystery. http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/stories-behind-newcastles-called-vampie-12455793 Hemlock Heart Tale of Rabbit And The Dancing Turkeys https://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/tale-of-rabbit-and-the-dancing-turkeys.htm One time while Wild-Cat was out hunting he came upon Rabbit in the tall grass. Rabbit and Wild-Cat were enemies, and so they began to fight. Soon Wild-Cat had Rabbit down and was about to kill him, when Rabbit said: “How would you like some nice Turkeys to eat?” “That is just what I have been looking for,” said Wild-Cat. “Well, I know where there are some, and I was just about to catch some when I met you. Now, if you kill me they will all get away. You had better spare my life until I show you how to catch the Turkeys; then you may do what you please with me.” Wild-Cat agreed, and so Rabbit told him to stand still while he sang the Turkey dance song. After he had sung a little, he told Wild-Cat to lie down and pretend to be dead; that he would tell the Turkeys that he had killed Wild-Cat, and wished them to dance around him with closed eyes. While they danced, Wild-Cat was to jump up and grab all he wanted. Soon the Turkeys heard the song and came to see what it was about. Rabbit told them that he had killed the great turkey-eater, Wild-Cat, and that he wanted them to dance a victory dance around him. Rabbit continued his song, and as he sang the Turkeys danced. Wild-Cat peeped and saw one big one dancing near him. He jumped to get it, and as he grabbed the Turkey, Rabbit ran away through the grass, and so escaped from Wild-Cat.
