Everything you want to know about dreams! Hosts Dave Billington and Laura Payne and their guests talk about all the dream experiences, ideas, and theories there are, as well as ways of working with dreams and going further with your nighttime adventures. Laura and Dave are both psychotherapists and teachers at the Dream Research Institute (DRI), the centre for dream studies at psychotherapy training college CCPE in London, UK.
Once again we've come to the end of another series and once again we're going to end with our popular Q&A session. Thanks for listening and joining us on board the Dream Boat this time round. We love having you here and enjoy reading your thoughts and questions. Dave pops back on board to join Laura for the wrap up and they tackle some great dream themes in this session, including toilet dreams and funeral dreams, discussing their psychological implications and the importance of ‘letting go' for personal transformation. Whereas toilet dreams can reflect bodily needs or deeper psychological issues, funeral dreams signify the need for ritualistic closure and rebirth. They discuss how dreams can serve as a reflection of unmet needs in waking life and how the process of letting go can be both challenging and necessary for growth, leading to deeper self-awareness and emotional processing. They also address the impact of intense dreams on sleep quality and the significance of sleep hygiene and mindfulness in achieving restful sleep. Laura discusses mindfulness techniques from her book Nine Steps to a Mindful Life Without Meditating which can help calm the mind before sleep. What happens at the intersection of dreams and consciousness? In this conversation, Laura is joined again by Maria to explore the profound notion of one very powerful question: WHO IS THE DREAMER. Their guest to help dismantle this philosophical dream knot is Dr. Newton Kondaveti, of Quantum Life University near Hyderabad in India. Dr Kondaveti shares his insights into the relationship between dreams and consciousness, the significance of lucid dreaming, which can pinpoint the path to a higher awareness. He also considers the concept of the Akashic records, a cosmic library or energetic archive of all universal events, thoughts, words and emotions. They discuss how dreams serve as a tool for self-discovery and can alleviate suffering. Dreams contain hidden dimensions of our existence with dreams revealing hidden dimensions not accessible in waking life, as well as providing insights into past and future experiences. Dr. Kondaveti discusses his work at the Quantum Life University (QLU), emphasizing the importance of understanding dreams in the context of spiritual science and personal growth and the university's aim of blend spirituality with scientific understanding. What does it mean when we say that the Sandman has been when we awake? In this conversation, Laura is joined by a new co-host Maria Nazdravan of the DRI and they explore the mythological figures associated with dreams and nightmares such as the Sandman. They consider the Sandman myth, his link with Danish fairytale writer Hans Christian Anderson and various mythical creatures like the Baku and the Oneiroi. In this conversation, Laura meets ‘smellologist' Keren Bester to explore the intricate relationship between smell and dreams. They delve into Keren's PhD research on olfactory perception and its philosophical implications and how this can relate to dreams. They discuss how smell influences memory and personhood, the impact of COVID when many people, who lost their sense of smell (anosmia), realised the importance of this mainly unconscious sense in their lives. They also look at the potential for using smell as a tool in lucid dreaming and whether certain smells can provoke good or bad dreams. And are you one of the few people who can actually smell something in a dream? Do you have smelly dreams? If so, Keren would like to hear from you. Her contact details are below. Keren shares her personal journey and the challenges of researching a sense that is often overlooked and vital to our sense of Self. Keren's website is www.chemicalpoetry.com (an updated version is coming soon!) keren@chemicalpoetry.com She's keen to hear from people who: - have experienced smell in their dreams - have explicitly experienced not being able to smell i.e. noticing in a dream they can't smell something - anyone who would like to participate in research using smell to prompt lucidity and/or influence dream content Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! Laura announces the DRI's first retreat in the home of dream incubation – Epidavros in Greece. Twelve lucky people will join her and Sarah Janes from Dream Mysteries in May (see how to join the retreat link below*) for a full immersion in the ancient temple sleep practices for healing. Laura and Melinda run through the power of these ancient rituals before Laura interviews Sarah Janes about her fascinating work in this area. Sarah Janes talks about how she became fascinated by the power of dreams during childhood and what led her from jettisoning her career as a US show promoter to become a specialist in ancient dream cults through the development of her work at Dream Mysteries. Laura and Sarah discuss the beauty of Epidavros and how its magic is spell binding, especially wrapped around the myths and practices of the Greek healing God Asklepios. Sarah Jane reveals how retreatants are often called by the God himself in dreams to come out to the sanctuary and how they find her online after such a dream. Laura discusses how the God turned up for her once in a spiritual workshop before she became a psychotherapist which led her to visit the site at Epidavros and, like Sarah Janes, the visit felt like a powerful ‘coming home'. Sarah runs through what the retreatants will find at the temple and how the group will try out sleep hypnosis, purification practices, sound work and dream theatre work, in similar ways to the ancients who experienced dreaming there thousands of years ago. The two dream researchers also look at a similar incubation project in a recreated oasis in the Egyptian desert and the links between the ancient Egyptian dream incubation practices with the cult of Asklepios in the Ancient Greek and Roman worlds. *If you want to join them in May the Retreat Link is here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/divine-dreaming-retreat-in-greece-tickets-1236007895889?aff=oddtdtcreator Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! Here's the dedicated signup link: http://eepurl.com/bzBNW5 In this episode Laura and Lisa discuss Jungian concepts for dreaming which are covered in the new book written by Lisa alongside her podcast co-hosts and friends, Joseph Lee and Deborah Stewart. Lisa offers some great tips for remembering dreams, including research that points to vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) for improving dream vividness and recall. The book also includes a series of clever dream interpretation techniques which are entitled ‘keys'. Laura and Lisa explore the wonderful notion of the ‘Dream Maker', and how we all relate to this aspect of dreaming - the dream authority which seems to care for us, guide us in dreams, as well as admonish us. What is this energy? They finally chat through a listener's fascinating Dream of the Week about getting married in later life and how she swaps her bridegroom-to-be for a fox in her bed, before waking up while in the dream to shoo it out. They discuss wild animals in dreams and their sexual readings, lucidity and the strange concept of a dream within a dream. Internationally renowned Jungian dreamer Sven Doehner PhD, protégé of James Hillman, comes on board to discuss the healing power of dreams using sound. Laura and Melinda also attend one of his acclaimed workshops, held at the DRI in London, UK and report back on the results. Sven talks how healing can materialize not just by playing with dream imagery and diving into meanings and symbolism but how sound can form a significant part of the healing process. Melinda and Laura discuss this and how they were impressed with Sven's techniques during the London workshop. Sven, a Mexican, reveals how a family dream about the 1937 Hindenburg Airship disaster affected his family and how a personal dream when he met James Hillman by chance in a US bookshop resulted in Hillman, a student of Jung, taking him on as a client and student. Sven discusses his work as a Transpersonal psychotherapist and facilitator and how his workshops and retreats have taken him round the world. Sven Doehner, PhD, MFA, is a 72 year old Psychoanalyst trained in C.G. Jung´s Analytical Psychology, with James Hillman in Archetypal Psychology, as a Somatic Movement Educator, and as a Transpersonal therapist. His exploration, involvement and experience with native Ancestral Healing and Spiritual practices – begun in 1984 – is blended into his therapeutic work with others, as is his expertise in working with the Voice: “The Listening Voice”. in which he guides into discovering the vocal form of what is moving within them in a moment of particular tension. His intention is to dissolves knotts, opens space, and gives form to something new in order to restore, movement in the “being” of a person´s life. He calls this innovative proposal “The Sound Imagination”. www.svendoehner.com Insta: @svendoehner
In this festive conversation, Laura and Melinda are joined by author Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, Dickens' great, great, great granddaughter to explore the profound influence of Charles Dickens on Christmas traditions, dreaming and the cultural significance of his work, particularly 'A Christmas Carol.' They delve into Dickens' complex relationship with sleep and dreams, which is often explored in his novels with their themes of redemption and social responsibility, and his bizarre sleeping habits. Dickens suffered from parasomnias – sleeping disorders like hallucinations and nightmares, which are the hallmark feature of ‘A Christmas Carol' when the ghost of Marley terrorises his business partner Ebenezer Scrooge in his sleep on Christmas Eve, with dramatic consequences. Lucinda, biographer and Victorian historian, shares insights into Victorian Christmas celebrations and personal traditions, emphasizing the importance of connection and joy during the holiday season. They discuss the enduring legacy of Dickens' storytelling and its relevance in today's world and Lucinda's new book, ‘A Victorian Christmas' as well as her earlier book ‘Dickens and Christmas'. Your dream questions... answered. It's the end of Series 4, and before we take a little break, we take the opportunity to answer more of the questions sent in. Questions like: What does it mean when I hear music in a dream? And (the classic): Why do I keep dreaming about my ex? As ever, the answers lead us down some suprising, interesting, and sometimes amusing paths. Sound bites: "Music is a way of relating to those subtle aspects of ourselves that don't have to go through the cognitive filter." "Dreaming about an ex may indicate unfinished business, projection of certain qualities onto the ex, or a need to revisit and resolve emotions associated with the past relationship." Dr Deirdre Barrett is a pioneer on the frontier of dreams and technology. This week, we bring you Laura's interview with this Harvard psychologist, dream researcher, clinician and artist who has been pushing the bounds of new technology to increase our understanding of dreams and ask deeper questions about what generative AI tells us about dreams when it generates its own versions of novel dream reports. Can you tell the difference between an AI's dream and a human's? Deirdre Barrett, Ph.D. is a psychologist on the faculty of Harvard where she teaches courses on dreams to undergraduates, psychiatry residents & psychology interns, and lectures on hypnosis. She is President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. She has written five books including Pandemic Dreams and The Committee of Sleep, She is Editor-in-Chief of the international academic journal, Dreaming. Dr. Barrett has published dozens of academic articles and chapters on dreams, hypnosis, sleep talking, and evolutionary psychology. Her current work focuses on dreams and creativity. Laura interviewed Dr. Barrett at the annual conference of the International Association for the Study of Dreams in Kerkrade in the Netherlands. For the Dream of the Week, Dr. Barrett and Laura discuss a dream that inspired one of her works of dream art, in which owls swoop down onto a woman's head. Talk about your dreams??
Laura and Dave go head-to-head with an AI trained to interpret dreams. Who (or what) comes up with the most meaningful interpretations? You decide! Elswhere is a dream journaling app that offers interpretations powered by a GPT (generative pre-trained transformer), otherwise known as a generative AI. Kelly Bulkeley and Sheldon Juncker have been instrumental in creating and training Elsewhere to interpret dreams, and they come aboard the Dream Boat to discuss the intersection of technology and dreaming, specifically the use of AI in dream interpretation. The guests discuss the accuracy and insights provided by the AI interpretations, which draw on the work of Freud and Jung, among others. In an extended “Dream of the Week” segment, Sheldon shares a dream for Dave and Laura to explore and interpret, and then the group hears what Elsewhere had to say about it. What will the influence of AI be on dream interpretation, and are there potential benefits of using AI as a tool for self-reflection and understanding? Hopefully it's collaboration, not competition. Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D., is a dream researcher and author with a background in the psychology of religion. He is director of the Sleep and Dream Database (as discussed on episode 2 of this series of the Dream Boat), a Senior Editor of the APA journal Dreaming, and a former President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Sheldon Juncker, B.Sc. is a software engineer who works in the fields of dream research, data analysis, and artificial intelligence, who in addition to his work with Dr Bulkeley on Elsewhere also helps to maintain the Sleep and Dream Database. Dave and Laura explore techniques and practices to improve sleep and enhance dream recall. The conversation covers sleep tracking devices, the different stages of sleep, the importance of deep sleep, and the role of REM sleep in dreaming. Drawing on personal experiences with sleep as well as their therapy experience, they share tips for improving sleep hygiene, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule and avoiding screens before bed. They also explore mindfulness practices and the use of dream journals to enhance dream recall. Takeaways Good sleep health is essential for improving dream recall and overall well-being. Understanding the different stages of sleep, including deep sleep and REM sleep, can help optimize sleep quality. Practicing good sleep hygiene, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule and avoiding screens before bed, can improve sleep. Mindfulness practices, such as body scans and playing the day's film backwards, can help relax the mind and prepare for sleep. Keeping a dream journal and engaging in techniques to remember dreams can enhance dream recall and facilitate dream exploration. For the dream of the week, Laura reads a dream from a listener named Gordon, who experiences a profound sense of love for his daughter as he realizes he is coming to the end of his life. The dream mitigates the fear of dying through the overwhelming feeling of love. The conversation explores the connection between sleep, dreaming, and death, as well as the fear of death and its impact on sleep. Techniques for addressing death anxiety and finding meaning in life are discussed, emphasizing the importance of connection and love. "Dreamers, big dreamers in particular really need to step forward today. It's more important than ever, I think, to bring dreaming into the world." Dave and Laura interview Dr. Kelly Bulkeley about his book, The Spirituality of Dreaming: Unlocking the Wisdom of Our Sleeping Selves. They explore the idea that dreaming is not just about personal insight, but also about spiritual insight for ourselves, our communities, and the world. Dr. Bulkeley emphasizes the transformative and dynamic nature of dreams and the potential for dreaming to bring about change and growth in our lives. For the Dream of the Week, Kelly shares a dream that involves flying through a shopping mall with tv character Jeff Winger. To celebrate World Lucid Dreaming Day (12 April), we're replaying our interview with Robert Waggoner, a leading expert on lucid dreaming. One of the world's top lucid dreamers, Robert Waggoner, joins Dave and Laura for a fascinating journey into the often so-called “rare” dream state of lucid dreaming. But as Robert will show, it's not that rare for some people, and you can try it too. Author of Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self and Lucid Dreaming Plain and Simple (with Caroline McCready), Robert shares how he has had over a thousand lucid dreams since he discovered he could do it whilst at high school in the US on reading Carlos Castaneda's books about Don Juan. We hear what he has learned from his lucid dreams, from tips on becoming lucid in a dream to answers to some of his questions about the nature of consciousness, which he started to explore once he got bored with flying and walking through walls in his dreams. It turns out there's more to lucid dreaming than manipulating the dream reality, more than wish fulfilment, and certainly more than making yourself more productive. We look at the history of research into lucid dreaming. What is lucid dreaming, according to Robert Robert's own techniques and how to try this out for yourself. Lucid games of flying, walking through walls and having sex. How to stay lucid and not wake up. The impact of the film Inception on Lucid Dreaming Neuroscience studies on the state Robert's own principles of Lucid Dreaming and its gateway to the deeper state of amazing spiritual experiences and being connected to a larger awareness. For the Dream of the Week, Robert also shares his lucid dream in which his mother-in-law returns from the land of the dead with an important message for him. Dream Answers to Dream Questions! A 14-year-old boy who was curious about his dreams asked two questions before going to sleep: “Can you dream in colour or in black and white?” And, “Do you need light to dream?” Laurel and Hardy helped bring answers that night, and those answers were unequivocal, funny, and meaningful, and a few decades later Damien Moore has come on the podcast to talk about that experience and some of his other fascinating dreams. Those familiar with The Dream Boat Podcast will know that in each series we have a “Dream Lab” episode in which we invite two dreamers to share a dream that we then discuss from different angles to see how it relates to the dreamer's life and what kind of meaning can be found in it. We always enjoy talking about those dreams, and people seem to enjoy listening to them, so for Series 3, we're expanding the format. In the last episode we heard about Yas's recurring dream of losing her children on the train, and its resolution. This week Damien's dream sparks a conversation about colour and humour in dreams, lucid dreams (Damien has had many lucid dreams) and the nature of consciousness itself. Laura and Dave explore the images and symbols of Damien's night-time world using Freudian, Jungian and other psychological and philosophical frameworks. As ever, whatever ideas and interpretations may be discussed, the dream always belongs to the dreamer, and Damien is a thoughtful and wise guest who has reflected deeply on his dreams. Yas Floyer is a journalist and mother, and like any mother she worries about her kids (maybe with more reason that some people). So Yas brings the latest iteration of a long-recurring maternal anxiety dream into the Dream Lab to discuss it with Laura and Dave. We always get lots of questions about recurring dreams and how they evolve over time, so this is an opportunity to talk about recurrence, anxiety dreams, and what allows us to eventually let them go. Those familiar with The Dream Boat Podcast will know that in each series we have a “Dream Lab” episode in which we invite two dreamers to share a dream that we then discuss from different angles to see how it relates to the dreamer's life and what kind of meaning can be found in it. We always enjoy talking about those dreams, and people seem to enjoy listening to them, so for Series 3, we're expanding the format and spending this whole episode talking about Yas's dream of losing her children on the train (and the more recent resolution of that gut-wrenching scenario). Our second dreamer, Damien, will be featured in the next episode. In this episode, we discuss the literal interpretation of the dream, looking at the real-life trauma behind it, and the natural worries of a mother watching her kids grow towards independence. We also look at the symbolism of trains, treacherous descents, and the dramatization of separation anxiety, using Freudian, Jungian and other psychological frameworks to guide us. As ever, whatever ideas and interpretations may be discussed, the dream always belongs to the dreamer, and Yas has plenty of insight of her own. Who will you see as you approach the final exit? Dreams and visions at the end of life are significant and unique, according to research done at Hospice and Palliative Care Buffalo, USA. These end-of-life experiences (ELE'S) include images and experiences of those we loved who have died before us, be they parents, partners or pets. They may also be opportunities to confront and release old trauma. Dave had the opportunity for a short interview with Dr Christopher Kerr, CEO and Chief Medical Officer at the Hospice, physician, researcher and author of Death is But a Dream, the book based on his and his team's research on end-of-life dreams and visions. How can your nightmare be your friend? Dr Leslie Ellis explains why nightmares might be shouting for your attention, showing what is unmetabolised in your psyche and maybe even telling you what is needed to help that process. “The antidote is often within the dream itself,” she says. She tells us about her embodied dreamwork method for “imagining the dream forward” to discover a new way through the dream, allowing it to complete in a way that doesn't disturb your sleep. As part of her mission to de-mystify nightmare treatment and dreamwork in general, Dr Ellis talks to us about her long experience in working with dreams and nightmares, including her doctoral research on treating the trauma-related dreams of refugees. And she shares her knowledge and enthusiasm for the Focusing work of Eugene Gendlin. “We are engines with millions of feedback loops… And dreams are a balancing process” We are joined by well-known U.K. Jungian analyst Dr Roderick Peters who's been working in the field of dreams for more than 40 years. We look at the Jungian perspective on dreaming and its symbolic world of archetypes, opposites and individual and collective consciousness. Roderick recalls a powerful dream that he had when he was aged 3 or 4 about the nature of individuation and the separation of a child's consciousness from that of its mother. This amazing dream has stayed with him all his life and set him on the path to studying his dreams on a daily basis since childhood. He also talks about his career as a doctor working in a sleep lab before he decided to become a Jungian psychoanalyst. Finally, Roderick joins in with offering interpretations for this episode's Dream of the Week, sent in from a listener who goes to a dream theatre and meets a famous actress. For Roderick as a Jungian, dreams are where we explore “the organs of our psyche through the archetypes.” Dr Roderick Peters has written several books including Living With Dreams published by Andre Deutsch. He lectures and has written many interesting papers which can be found on his website. His has a therapeutic practice in London and Surrey and is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council. “Am I dreaming?” is the question you need to answer to become lucid in your dreams, and that question will also make you question what it really means to be awake. In this episode, Dave and Laura speak with educator, author and dream researcher Ryan Hurd, who teaches graduate level courses at the University for Peace in Costa Rica and National University in California, and is the driving force behind dreamstudies.org, an essential resource for anyone interested in dreams in general and lucid dreaming in particular. Ryan is interested in consciousness studies at the intersections of ecology, spirituality and material culture. His latest work is Lucid talisman: Forgotten lore. In an open, personal, and informative conversation, Ryan tells Dave and Laura about how he started out as an archaeologist but now searches for knowledge and treasure in the depths of consciousness as revealed through dreams. He shares some of his vast knowledge on lucid dreaming, including lucid dreaming induction (learning how to have more lucid dreams) and the use of totems and the lucid talisman. In the Dream of the Week, he shares a heart-warming dream in which he and his infant son find that his home's basement has become a huge, church-like space. With a background in both archaeology and dream research, Ryan currently teaches graduate level courses at University for Peace in Costa Rica and National University in California. We're taking a little break this week, so here's a recurrance of an episode from April 2023: Series 1, Episode 3 - Symbols in Dreams with Dr Nigel Hamilton. See you in the New Year! ___ The questions we most often get asked usually come down to “What does it mean if I dream about ____?” We all want to know more about what our dreams are saying to us and how to interpret them, and people have been compiling manuals on dream symbolism since the advent of the written word. Even today there are hundreds of books on the subject online. But should we be attached to specific meanings? Does a tooth or cat or a car come with some universal meaning attached that is the same for everyone? In this episode, Laura and Dave welcome Dr Nigel Hamilton aboard the Dream Boat to talk about personal and universal symbols in dreams and how he works with them as a psychotherapist. Nigel is a highly experienced therapist, teacher, researcher and one of the world's leading pioneers in dream interpretation techniques. He is the founder of one the world's top Transpersonal Psychotherapy colleges, the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education in London, co-founder of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies and the former UK Representative of the Inayatiyya Sufi Order International. He has spent years studying and pioneering techniques for working with dream symbolism and his book Awakening Through Dreams: Journeys Through the Inner Landscape covers some of his fascinating discoveries. He teaches workshops and leads courses on spiritual approaches to psychotherapy at CCPE. In this episode, Dr Hamilton discusses the symbolism of colours, symbols of transformation in the alchemical model, and how we can discern the personal from the universal. For our “Dream of the Week” feature, Nigel shares three brief dreams which marked particular steps in his own process. Let us know what you think, and submit a dream for us to explore on the podcast! Beyond lucidity: For experienced lucid dreamers, at least some of them, the ability to live out endless fantasies gets tired pretty quickly, and they start to use their lucid dreams to explore the nature of their minds, their dreams, consciousness, and existence itself. In this episode, Laura and Dave talk to someone who has done exactly that, and written about it, and who teaches people who want to do the same: Melinda Powell. They talk about how dreams have shaped and influenced Melinda's life and work, and the powerful messages she has received in dreams, including the directive to teach and write about what she has learned from paying attention to her inner world. Melinda is one of the Co-Founders of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies; she is a psychotherapist and teacher of dreamwork and the art of lucid dreaming, and is the author of two books about dreams, “The Hidden Lives of Dreams: What they can tell us and how they can change our World”, and “Lucid Surrender: the alchemy of the soul in lucid dreaming”. She has published and lectured widely about dreams and lucidity, and she is writing a new book called: "Dreams My Mother Taught Me: Lessons in Love, Light and Lucid Dreaming From Beyond the Grave." What can you do when you wake up screaming, having revisited the harrowing scenes of a trauma which still haunts your nightmares? Linda Yael Schiller from Boston in the USA has developed the GAIA (Guided Active Imagination Approach) method to stop the endless cycle of nightmares for war trauma survivors and for anyone who suffers disturbing nightmares. We have talked about parasomnias - the official term for a variety of disturbed sleep patterns – and nightmare treatment with other guests, and in this episode, Laura and Dave talk to Linda about her work with PTSD and dreams, and how GAIA brings together best-practice trauma treatment and Jungian active imagination to turn PTSD into PTSG: Post-Traumatic Spiritual Growth. Linda's method is systematic and clear, and has a lot in common with the Waking Dream Process, for those who know it or have listened to our episode about it. She takes Dave through the GAIA method in one of his dreams… listen to find out what they discover! **TRIGGER WARNING** This episode contains references to sexual assault and sexual abuse. It's the end of the second series already! It's our twentieth episode and time to answer some more of your questions (and in one case, have a second go at a previous question). In this episode: I think I'm having nightmares but I don't remember them. Can people with aphantasia (who don't see mental images) dream, and work with their dreams? My dreams are often set in places from my childhood. Is this common and what does it mean? And Dave puts a question (about dreams of labyrinths) from an unusual source to Laura, which opens up a conversation about some of the subjects we're going to be looking at in Series 3 and beyond! ...By popular demand! As Dave and Laura come towards the end of the second series, they consider two listeners' dreams through the lenses of different interpretations. Trainee psychotherapist Kit presents her fascinating maid of honour dream, in which the most beautiful silk dress she is going to wear to the wedding of a childhood friend is stolen and worn by her father. How dare he! Dave and Laura explore the wonderful imagery of the operation of Union, the Royal Wedding, or coniunctio, through the lenses of Jung, Freud, and the DRI's Waking Dream technique. We journey through gorgeous conch shells, royal blue velvet cushions in an Uber and dingy basement bars, to look at the delicate balance between masculine and feminine energy and what this means for dreamer Kit. Then Ayurvedic doctor and osteopath Angela joins the Dream Lab to present her magnificent seven-foot Australian shaman dream. Dave and Laura accompany her on her dreamtime spiritual sojourn as the dreamer returns to the family home to meet her real-life friend and mystic teacher before she encounters a beautiful indigenous Australian hunter in the attic. She then returns to eat clams, another powerful spiritual image of pilgrimage for the dreamer, with her sister. Dave and Laura look through the various lenses: Jung, alchemy, the elements and the amazing Waking Dream Technique to unearth interpretations. What would it be like for the dreamer to become the hunter? And what happens when she eats the clams? But as the lenses turn Dave rightly reminds us at the end of Dream Lab that despite these interpretative explorations the dream always belongs to the dreamer. Enjoy! Pets or predators, spirit guides or instinctual drives: there are many ways to interpret and relate to the images and experiences of animals we may encounter in our dreams. This week, Christian Gerike of Sonoma University in California talks to Dave and Laura about the animals in our dreams and all the ways that we can look at them. Christian Gerike, MA, teaches The Psychology of Dreams and researches Cognitive Psychology and Cultural Anthropology at Sonoma State University in California. He takes a broad view of all the personal, cultural and spiritual meanings of our nocturnal animal encounters, drawing on his work and research in both Psychology and Anthropology, and with a good dose of personal experience and self-reflection, too. For the Dream of the Week, Christian shares his dream of The Mouse Who Asked for Help, and he, Laura and Dave discuss what it might mean for Christian (who even gets an “aha!” moment out of it!). Your dreams can bring you to your own “aha!”. Send a dream to share as the Dream of the Week or for our Dream Lab episodes via the social and website links below. In our world of rapidly advancing AI, we are being forced to ask ourselves, “What is consciousness?” Science fiction author Philip K Dick's book “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, which inspired the Bladerunner films, invites us to consider what it is to have – or to be – an artificial consciousness, and the role that dreams have in shaping that consciousness. Instead of cogito ergo sum – I think therefore I am – will it be ego somniare ergo sum – I dream therefore I am? The Dream Boat podcast is starting an occasional series called “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” to explore these questions, and for this first instalment, Laura and Dave talk to Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience Katja Valli about organic consciousness, what it is, and how she studies it. Photo credit: University of Skövde HR Professor Valli defines consciousness as the ability to have a subjective experience, and asks whether machines can have experiences or are only capable of producing predetermined reactions. Dreams, she says, are an integral part of consciousness. And on the subject of non-human animals, she tells us why we think they dream and why it's hard to know for sure – but she says it would be presumptuous to assume that only humans are conscious. Along the way, Dave, Laura and Professor Valli talk about theories of dreaming, the evolutionary role of dreaming, and experiments that show the neurological connections between learning, memory and dreams. Professor Valli shares a wonderful and (and frightening!) dream of an old couple and the horrible wartime experiences they survived together. When they discuss it, it turns out there may be a more positive interpretation available. Your dreams are wonderful, too. This week co-host Laura Payne swaps chair and becomes Dave's guest to discuss the fascinating ancient technique of dream incubation. They take a journey through the ancient worlds of Greece and Egypt to look at how the Asclepion dream temples which spread throughout the Mediterranean for hundreds of years became the prototype hospitals of today. As Laura says they were a mashup of modern-day hospital, come spa, come cinema complex. Laura looks at how the cult of the Greek healing God Asclepios grew in influence and how huge Asclepion centres such as Epidaurus on the Greek mainland became important sites of dream healing and entertainment centres with its famous amphitheatre, staging Greek dramas and music. They discuss Laura's research into the Asclepios method of dream incubation with its fascinating symbology of five key images such as snakes and dogs as signs of healing and the use of special womb-like caves called Abatons to conjure up and incubate healing dreams. We learn how Laura experiments with dreamers in workshops and dream retreats with stunning outcomes after they build their own abaton sanctuaries out of pop-up tents and then explore Greek myths whose archetypes contain potent energy that still impact us today. As Laura says this is about the power of ritual as preparation to incubate the creative imagination and the setting of intention before going to sleep. We look briefly at the mystery school work of Jean Houston and the writings of Edward Tick who have also explored the influence of these ancient sites. In Dream of the Week Laura and Dave look at a listener's snake dream. In the dream a white snake comes out of a photo and wraps itself around the woman's finger. Is it poisonous, the dreamer asks? What would an Asklepion dream guide, known as a psychotherapeute, make of this dream and how can this dream's message help the dreamer? Your dreams are fascinating, too. *Trigger Warning - Suicidal thoughts and childhood abuse are briefly referred to in this episode* You've flown, you've travelled, you've had all the sex you can imagine in your lucid dreams. What now? Dr Nigel Hamilton joins us aboard the Dream Boat again, to talk about the experiments he and Robert Waggoner (heard in Season 1, Episode 1) have been asking lucid dreamers to do in their sleep. Starting from his observations as a therapist and dream worker that movements in dreams corresponded to changes in the psyche, Dr Hamilton tells Dave and Laura how the research has progressed to the current phase of asking experienced lucid dreamers to ask a series of questions when they are in a lucid dream, and he shares some of the remarkable experiences that followed. Along the way, they ask: If you are “in control” when you are lucid dreaming, who or what is answering your questions? Dr. Hamilton is co-Founder of the Dream Boat's sponsor, the DRI centre for dream studies, and he is the founder of the world-famous transpersonal psychotherapy training college, CCPE, in London. Let the dream roll begin! Dave and Laura welcome UK based shaman Evelyn McDonald on board the Dream Boat with her drum, rattle and incense, and drift off into the shamanic dream space. Eve talks about her work as a medicine woman, an ancient spiritual healing practice at the heart of many indigenous cultures since the beginning of time. She had the gift as a child growing up in Grenada and was finally called to follow its healing path after a career in the corporate world when she came to the U.K. The team looks at how shamanic practice links with Lucid Dreaming and the work of Arnie Mindell who wrote the Dreaming Body and runs the Process Work Institute in the US. They enter the shamanic consciousness, a dreamy world of dream journeys, soul retrievals and vision quests, all to the beat of Eve's amazing drum and rattle. (Dave is drummed into a trance pretty early on!) Prepare to be transported into another realm. The Dream of the Week opens up the universe of creation held in an enormous sphere as we enter the cosmic dance. This is a dream space of harmony and oneness with Eve's shamanic interpretation of attunement and vibration. Dave and Laura absorb the dream's deeper message before Eve and Dave rattle and drum out the session. Your dreams are fascinating, too. Waking in a cold sweat, waking yourself up as you cry out in fear to find yourself in your own bed but still filled with feelings of horror or dread from a disturbing dream – we've all had nightmares, and for people who experience them frequently, they can be disruptive and distressing. Enter Prof Michael Schredl of the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany, who has been spent 30 years in the sleep lab and working with patients and who has researched the efficacy of psychological treatments like Image Rehearsal Therapy (IRT). Michael talks to Dave and Laura about: the difference between nightmares and night terrors causes and factors of nightmare frequency the relationship between waking attitudes and nightmare content how particular images trigger different emotions for individuals but how the basic pattern of a dream gives hints as to what experience is being dramatized in the dream. the difference between idiopathic (not related to real-life experience) and post-traumatic nightmares Image Rehearsal Therapy (IRT), its applications and limitations the important role of self-empowerment in dealing with nightmares By the end, Michael can advise us all to “Have nice dreams – and even if it's a nightmare, you know what to do.” Appropriately, the Dream of the Week is a nightmare of a plane flying into a wall of water and being crushed in ice. Michael shares his thoughts on how the dreamer might overcome their helplessness and find an active solution to the scenario. Your dreams are fascinating, too! In this episode, they give a brief overview of alchemy as a symbolic system that describes the stages of change in the psyche, originally identified by Jung in his reading of medieval mystical texts and still used in analytical psychology and taught on the Diploma in Integrative Transpersonal Counselling and Psychotherapy at CCPE in London. Included in this discussion: The 4 stages of the alchemical model Seven major “operations” or processes that help change occur Images in dreams that signify the stages and operations The symbolic elements – earth, water, fire and air – and the aspects of consciousness they represent And the Dream of the Week is a magical dream of transformation aided by a shaman in the desert under a starry sky, leading to the emergence of a golden snake. Dave and Laura talk about the rich alchemical imagery and what it might mean for the dreamer. Don't you wish you had dreams like that? Your dreams are fascinating, too. Natalie discusses her work and her own relationship with the dream state from childhood water dreams through recurring psychic dreams, and her relationship to the premonition dream state. The team talk about the Jungian notion of the shared collective consciousness and how our dreams reveal our connection to a broader awareness of change and events, be it in our families or the world at large. Along the way, they touch on: Freud and Jung's views on psychic space Lucid psychic dreaming Dreaming of the dead and the messages we hear from them Predictive dreams and symbolism The dreaming intuitive voice Telepathic dreaming amongst family members and friends And for the dream of the week, Natalie discusses how she simultaneously dreams the same dreams as her sister. It's the final episode of the first series! But don't worry, we'll be back in 2 weeks. In this episode, Laura and Dave look back on the journey so far and answer the questions you have sent in. Questions like: Can you work with dream fragments if you can't remember big narrative dreams? And how can you improve recall? Why do dream workers ask the dreamer how they felt after they woke up? Why do I wake up feeling afraid? What about dream telepathy? Can a dream have no significance? Thank you to everyone who sent in a question. If you've got a question or a dream you'd like to share, get in touch via the links below. Dave and Laura invite their old teacher Dr Nigel Hamilton back on board to talk about his Waking Dream Process, a therapeutic method for re-imagining a dream and revisiting it as a visualisation. It is used to expand, deepen and embody the experience of the dream and get to its essence. In this episode, Nigel talks about dreams as a journey, not just a narrative. He tells us how we can track consciousness travelling through the body during sleep, and why it is important to connect images to sensations and locate them in the body, and how this releases the transformative power of dreams. He shares images of transformation from his work as a therapist using the Waking Dream Process, including decapitation (as a good thing!) and an emerald green scarab beetle that represents the way out of a nightmare. He also talks about some of his own profound dream experiences that shaped his view of dreams and his development of the Waking Dream Process. For "Dream of the Week", Laura brings a client's dream about meeting a childhood friend in a fairground. The crew discuss how they would use the Waking Dream Process with this dream If you have a dream you'd like to share (either calling into the Dream Lab or having us read it out for Dream of the Week), get in touch via the links below. Series 1, Episode 8: Dream Lab! The Rat Daughter and Sleeping in the Sea It's straight into the dream material in this episode! We've heard from many of you that you enjoy our “Dream of the Week” segment in each episode, when we talk about a dream that someone has sent in. This week, we are giving more time to the dreams, as Dave and Laura invite two dreamers aboard the Dream Boat to share a dream, expand on it, and interpret it together. Star brings a dream about a daughter who is a transforming rat (and so much more!), and June shares a dream in which she takes a nap in the sea and how she makes her way back to shore, including becoming lucid in her dream. Dave and Laura reflect on symbols, associations, and the way these experiences reflect the personal histories and current circumstances of the dreamers, and what gifts and insights the dreams might be offering. Thank you, Star and June! If you have a dream you'd like to share (either calling into the Dream Lab or having us read it out for Dream of the Week), get in touch via the links below. Why do we dream? It's one of the biggest questions about dreaming. One theory is that dream sharing is essential to the social development of our species because it helps create empathy. In this episode, Laura and Dave talk to Professors Mark Blagrove and Julia Lockheart about their new book, The Science and Art of Dreaming, in which they share the development of their theory of dream sharing and empathy. They also talk about their collaboration on DreamsID, their series of live events in which Mark leads an exploration of an audience member's dream while Julia paints images and narratives from the dream onto the pages of Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams. We will be hosting DreamsID at CCPE in Little Venice, London on 15 July, 2023. Info and tickets at Eventbrite. For "Dream of the Week", Mark and Julia talk about a couple of dreams from their book, “The Dream of Unfair Blame” and “The Dream of ‘Where is my Home?'”, sharing additional details about the dream telling and the dreamer. Are dreams and the sleep state random? Are dreams just brain junk or does a deeper wisdom lie in the unconscious world of dreams? The notion of the Eureka function! In this episode Dave and Laura look at famous dreams which have shaped our lives or changed the course of the world. This is the notion of the dream state as inspiration and how creativity in our dream life can make exciting and unique connections, providing solutions to tough problems. The hosts discuss famous scientific discoveries that have come during a dream when the dreaming rational mind creatively meets intuition. They consider : the theory of relativity that Einstein discovered after watching Swiss cows jumping an electric fence during a dream. Benzine and how the chemist Kekulé dreamt its structure The dreaming of the Periodic table Dream vision of electrons and the atomic structure Conception of Google How the notion of the collective unconscious repeating in universal archetypes sits behind the discovery of the DNA structure in a dream They then move onto famous music, art and literature that have emerged whilst dreaming. From Beethoven's piano sonatas through to The Rolling Stones' Keith Richard's sleeping with his guitar which resulted in a ghostly recording of the first verse of I Can't Get No Satisfaction. Mary Shelley's famous Frankenstein and Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde put both authors on the map after they appeared in dreams. As did ground breaking movies such as James Cameron's Avatar and Terminator concepts. Hollywood wasn't known as the dream factory for nothing. In the art world Laura and Dave look at William Blake as well as Salavdor Dali and the Surrealists and discuss when Freud met Dali and the portrait that ensued. https://www.freud.org.uk/2019/02/04/when-dali-met-freud/ The "Dream of the Week" is the second part to a dream discussed previously. The questions we most often get asked usually come down to “What does it mean if I dream about ____?” We all want to know more about what our dreams are saying to us and how to interpret them, and people have been compiling manuals on dream symbolism since the advent of the written word. Take a flight through dreams from the dawn of recorded history to the present day! Dave and Laura guide you from ancient Sumer, India, China and Tibet, touch on African, Arabic, Jewish, and Christian traditions via Egypt, Greece and Rome, finally bringing you up to the modern day via Descartes, Freud and Jung. It turns out that dream sharing and interpretation have been an intrinsic part of being human since the dawn of time, influencing decisions large and small (to the chagrin of some commentators), connecting people and helping them find meaning in their lives. In the "Dream of the Week" slot this week, Laura and Dave explore a dream of digging a manta ray up on a beach and finding a death's head on its belly. It's the single biggest question we get: "How can I work with my dreams?" Lots of people want to know how to understand their dreams, what they mean, and what to do with them. In this episode Dave and Laura discuss that question from all angles. They reveal their own techniques to improve dream recall and talk about what they've learned from experience, reading, and the experts they've encountered. Starting with how to encourage dreaming and dream recall, they discuss: Sleep routines Waking routines Setting dream intentions Using your dream journal to invite more dreams They also open up the world of dream interpretation and how to be curious about your own private dream language, symbology and associations. How far have you got towards discovering and developing a shared language with your unconscious? Dave and Laura also look at the DRI's pioneering Waking Dream Technique (featuring in its own episode later in this series). They discuss how they use this method with therapy clients to make a difference to their lives and how they teach participants on dream courses to use the Waking Dream Technique to get the most from what their dreams bring them. Listen to how Dave and Laura further explore dream interpretation with this episode's Dream of The Week as they read a dream from a psychotherapy student - all about keys, friends, a dried up river, mud and cleansing - and a very clear message! They consider its imagery, symbols and figures, and its alchemical content. There's more to this dream – the second part will be explored in a subsequent episode. They conclude with further tips on how to develop your own dream language and interpretation methods so you can engage more deeply with your inner dream world and bring it alive. A world-leading expert on lucid dreaming joins the Dream Boat crew to talk about lucid dreaming. One of the world's top lucid dreamers, Robert Waggoner, joins Dave and Laura on board this week for a fascinating journey into the often called “rare” dream state of lucid dreaming, popularised by the Leonardo DiCaprio 2010 cult film Inception. But as Robert will show, it's not that rare for some people and you can try it too. For the Dream of the Week, Robert also shares a his lucid dream in which his mother-in-law returns from the land of the dead with an important message for him. Robert is joining other DRI experts for a Lucid Dreaming online symposium on March 3, 2023 at 14.30 UK time. Click here for tickets!
