Weight Loss for Foodies podcast | Ditch the Diet and Lose Weight with Shari Broder | Life Coach School certified

Do you find yourself drawn to articles and ads about the latest superfood or that special miracle coffee that will help you burn pounds of fat effortlessly?  Do you worry that you're missing out if you haven't tried the latest product that claims it will help you feel better, sleep better, have more energy and flatten your tummy?  Do you think you need to buy an expensive cleanse to rid your body of toxins?  The biggest toxin from which to cleanse yourself  is the so-called “wellness industry” that preys upon smart women like you who are concerned about their health and weight.  It seems like you can't dine with a group of women without at least half of them either trying some new fad diet or eliminating one or more foods from their diet because they read on a website that it's bad for them for some unknown or unproven reason.  Or maybe it's under the guise of “clean eating.” Men don't usually fall for this stuff.  Maybe you're thinking, “That's because men don't have the same pressures as women to be thin.”  I didn't say anything about weight loss, though, did I? And neither does the “wellness industry” that's trying to sell you their ideas about what you should and shouldn't eat. What they're really doing is selling you diet mindset and products under  the guise of “wellness.” You see, the so-called wellness industry doesn't really care about your wellness. It's the diet industry in disguise. As Jessica Knoll said in a 2019 article in the New York Times about smashing the wellness industry, “the diet industry is a virus, and viruses are smart. It has survived all these decades by adapting, but it's as dangerous as ever.”  Listen to learn why you shouldn't fall prey to the claims  of the so-called wellness industry and celebrities who use their fame for financial gain by promoting these products.

Gloria Davis Browning is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, culinary school graduate, educator and advocate of Health at EVERY Size. We talk about how basic nutrition is pretty basic, how the latest food fads of Keto, Paleo and Intermittent Fasting aren't needed to keep ourselves healthy (the key to that is whole, natural foods prepared in a healthy, tasty way), that we shouldn't vilify vegetables (like potatoes, carrots, etc.), especially while eating heavily processed meats. Healthy is about how you feel, getting back to intuitive eating, avoiding the obsessive aspects of many of these diets, which doom one to failure (the one time you eat something off the diet, boom!). Good foods and bad foods don't exist for Gloria. She believes in gradual change for more lasting results, learning nutritional cooking so that you can have healthy meals at any budget, and learning how to make the best choices for you, whether you are at the grocery store, a fast food drive through or at a gas station on a road trip. Pro-tip: Turn that package around and read the labels, and understand a true portion size (check out the book THE PORTION TELLER for help with that), so you aren't taking in more calories (or fat or sodium) than you intended. Do you research regarding eating plans or food fads, and make sure that is linked to evidence from more than one source. Consider the environmental impact of ordering food in (the packaging, the plastics that really don't get recycled, and all that waste!). Understand how food is manufactured to make it more addictive (check out the book SALT, SUGAR, FAT: How the Food Giants Hooked Us for more in that). We also talk Parks and Rec, "toddler sized" sodas, research being bought, being skeptical by nature, lab rats, the French Paradox, giving your body and palate time to adjust to new (healthy) foods, the importance of moving your body, and getting back to instinctual eating.AN EXTENDED VERSION OF THIS EPISODE IS AVAILABLE TO PATREON AND APPLE PODCAST SUBSCRIBERS. We are living in a land of confusion, as the band Genesis warned us back in 1986, but even they could not have predicted just how much more confusing things would get 31 years later. With a storm of misinformation engulfing almost every field of human endeavor, 2017 was ripe with confusion. And one of the most bewildering subjects is also one of the most personal: our health. With celebrity gurus pitching pseudoscientific nonsense, conflicting news stories about what will and won't kill you, and an entire culture of hyper-privilege teaching people to be suspicious of science, people are being made to be afraid of their food. And there's a lot of money to made off of that fear. To help us navigate these choppy waters, Point of Inquiry host Paul Fidalgo is joined by two brilliant science communicators; Kavin Senapathy, a science and parenting columnist and co-author of The Fear Babe: Shattering Vani Hari’s Glass House; and Yvette d'Entremont, better known as the SciBabe, whose writing has appeared in a variety of outlets such as The Outline, Gawker, and Cosmopolitan. The two of them will guide us through this land of confusion, and maybe, with their of smarts and humor, make this a place worth living in. What does religion have to do with diets? Probably more than you think. In this episode I talk with professor of religious studies and author of the book, The Gluten Lie, Dr. Alan Levinovitz. We’ll discuss why “cleansing” and forms of restriction we see with today’s diet culture is not about health at all. Alan shares his personal story of his “holier than thou” feeling he got from a very short term “challenge” he did with his wife in the name of book research. You’ll hear why we both think the “sugar is going to kill you” headlines are utterly untrue and unhelpful. Alan shares a few food trends he think will grow in 2017 and I share how we can make improvements to our eating patterns without going too crazy. About Alan Alan Levinovitz received his PhD in religion from the University of Chicago where he specialized in classical Chinese thought. He is now assistant professor of religious studies at James Madison University, where he teaches classes on religion, Chinese philosophy, and the connection between religion and medicine. His work in journalism focuses on food, science, and culture, and has appeared in The Atlantic, Wired, The Washington Post, Slate, Vox, and elsewhere. He is the author of The Gluten Lie: And Other Myths About What You Eat, and his only food taboo is fake cheese, which he believes is irredeemably evil.
