In 2021, Social Hour aligned with legacy whiskey brand George Dickel to launch its seasonally-inspired Harvest Whiskey Sour, an expression made with Dickel's 13-year-old Tennessee whiskey and re-released the following year. The companies teamed up once again in 2023 to create the summer-themed Social Hour Bourbon Smash made with Dickel Bourbon, which was introduced in late June. Social Hour co-founder Tom Macy and Nicole Austin, the general manager and distiller of George Dickel whiskey spoke about the origins of the partnership, how the collaboration aligned the aims of both brands and how the relationship may develop down the line. Show notes: 0:48: Interview: Tom Colicchio, Partner, Colicchio Kitchen – Colicchio met with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif in New York City and spoke about his experience at the 2023 Summer Fancy Food, why growing up in New Jersey had a significant impact on his initial decision to develop a consumer brand and the companies expansion into condiments. Host Andy Nelson's frank and funny conversation with one of the whiskey industry's most prominent figures covers a lot of ground—from learning how to fake confidence until it becomes real to the risks and rewards of political engagement, and beyond. They discuss some heavy personal matters, and explore the unusual predicament of sharing a name with an internet celebrity whose bottom line is radically different from your own.
Pastors Scott and Brian are joined by Nicole Austin to talk about the church's summer theme of "Do Something Together." They discuss why this emphasis is more needed than we realize right now and what practical steps we can all take toward one another.
Catoctin Creek's Scott and Becky Harris were honored with the Dave Pickerell Memorial Craft Member of the Year Award during last Thursday's Distilled Spirits Council awards luncheon in New Orleans. We'll talk with them on WhiskyCast In-Depth and check in with Nicole Austin of George Dickel on Behind the Label. She was honored with the Emerging Leader of the Year Award, days after shocking a few purists by releasing a 15-year-old underproof spirit under the Cascade Moon label. In the news, a TTB proposal on American Single Malts could be just days away, and we'll hear from TTB Deputy Administrator David Wulf.

Is Tennessee Whiskey Bourbon? That argument has divided whisky lovers for years, but Nicole Austin says it is. She's the head distiller and general manager at Diageo's Cascade Hollow Distillery, the home of George Dickel Tennessee Whiskey. To prove her point, she created the new Dickel Bourbon, and she'll make her case on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Uncle Nearest opens up the latest phase of its new distillery in Tennessee, complete with artifacts from the original distillery Nathan "Nearest" Green and Jack Daniel ran following the Civil War. There's a cease-fire on one front in the trade war between Europe and the United States, and that means the end of U.S. tariffs on single malts from Scotland and Northern Ireland. In this episode, Matt talks to Nicole Austin, General Manager, and Distiller for George Dickel Tennessee Whisky. Born 40 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George A. Dickel was an established Nashville merchant when he entered the whisky business. Dickel grew his reputation for selling the smoothest, most mellow spirits in the region. Thus, Geo. A. Dickel & Co. was born and when the Cascade Hollow Distillery opened in 1878 in neighboring Coffee County, George Dickel bought a large share. George Dickel followed in the Scottish tradition of spelling whisky without an “e.” George Dickel preferred whisky made in the winter months more than summer months because he felt it made the whisky taste smoother, so the company began advertising their Geo. A. Dickel's Cascade Tennessee Whisky as “Mellow as Moonlight.” This is why our whisky is chilled before undergoing the charcoal-mellow filtration known as the Lincoln County Process. This extra step smooths out the flavor and we're still the only Tennessee distillery to do it. If you want to try any of the spirits Matt discussed on the show you can ORDER ONLINE or from the BIG RED LIQUORS APP for Curbside Pickup Service. It's as easy as 1,2,3! Start Your Order - bigredliquors.com Simply select your store, browse and search for George Dickel products, and start a CURBSIDE order. Your store will notify you when it is ready for pickup. Best of all, our NO TOUCH curbside will leave you with peace of mind and the great products you want ASAP.

Today’s expert mentoring session is led by Nicole Austin, a general manager, distiller, and craft spirits expert at Cascade Hollow Distilling Company. Although she was originally an environmental engineer from New York, traveled as far as Ireland and back, Nicole is now located in Tennessee and dedicates her life to crafting whisky. Nicole admits that the appeal of whisky first came from its “rockstar image,” however, once she became hooked on the science behind making the whisky, as well. Specifically, the distillation process. Her curiosity and passion for whiskey distillation lead her to the interesting history of George Dickel and his connection to the heritage of the beginning of the American distilling during the mid-1800s. Recently, Nicole and the Cascade Hollow Distilling Company were awarded Whiskey of the Year and Distiller of the Year. She even created her own bottle for the company, too. Nicole is the creator of the original George Dickle Bottled in Bond whiskey bottle that helps keep Cascade Hollow Distilling Co.’s commitment to quality, honestly-produced whisky. She created this with the purpose to show people that George Dickel deserves to also be recognized as a respected figure among other great bourbon distillers. At the time Nicole was trying to enter the field of craft spirits, there was not a lot of advice or literature about how to get into the industry, however, she pushed through and networked until she eventually became a founding president of the New York State Distillers’ Guild in addition to also serving as a founding board of directors of the American Craft Spirits Association. As a woman within the industry, it is also important to Nicole for other women to see that women know that it’s possible and that women are aware that this type of job exists and that it is completely possible that you can do it, too. Nicole gives some advice to listeners who are seeking employment, or who may be a woman or a minority who feels like they do not have a place within this field and industry, or who are looking to gain more access to it. Things You Will Learn You will learn about innovation in blending, chemistry, and whisky at Cascade Hollow Distilling Company with craft spirits expert, Nicole Austin. The George Dickel master distiller had just received the magazine's Whiskey of the Year award for her George Dickel Bottled in Bond Tennessee Whiskey the day before. We'll have her reaction and other highlights from the evening on WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, the threat of U.S. tariffs on more European whiskies is back. Trump Administration officials are looking at raising the tariffs already in effect on single malts from Scotland and Northern Ireland, while Congress has less than a month to extend the tax break small-scale distillers have been pushing for over the last two years.
Nicole Austin brings a new breath into the world of whiskey. Former King's County blender and project engineer, Nicole has a blend of science and art in her blood that is truly unique. Her understanding of chemistry and love of music managed to converge into the world of whiskey. Now with her highest profile role yet, the distillery manager for Cascade Hollow Distilling Company, how can she bring the delicious George Dickel back to the limelight. For some of us it never left, but the saturated world of whiskey leaves lots of work to be done. We chat hardcore, horse riding, and the new Dickel Bottle in Bond.

Nicole Austin made her mark on the American craft distilling movement at Brooklyn's Kings County Distillery, then spent some time in Ireland working on Tullamore D.E.W's grain distillery project as its commissioning engineer. Last year, she returned to the U.S. - not to another "craft" distillery, but as head distiller and general manager at Diageo's Cascade Hollow distillery in Tennessee. That makes her one of the first craft distillers to join a major whisky company as a distillery manager, though she's pledging to keep "craft" in her job description. We'll talk with Nicole Austin about making the switch, and the one unique thing she asked Diageo for when she was negotiating to take the job. Here's a hint: it didn't involve whiskey. In the news, Nikka is joining Suntory in shaking up its whisky lineup because of supply issues, while also planning a major investment in new warehousing capacity. Bunnahabhain's $14 million refurbishment is underway, and some news reports are claiming an $18 supermarket blended Scotch is the "world's best Scotch whisky." That's not the case, and we'll explain why.

Video response to this note: "CK I have a video request I like for you to talk about. I been crying because I am soo deeply hurt by this issue. This topic has been bothering me along with other black women. Well here it goes....Yesterday I went out to the movies and dinner with my boo (white man I been seeing for a few months) and these black men were making comments about my hair talking about I'm trying to straighten my hair like a white woman and calling me a Negro bedwench. My date (white guy) jumped to my defense and said "You can not speak about black women trying to look like white women when there are white women out here walking around with fake butts and fake boobs trying to look like black women." The weird part about this situation was that the black man was with a white woman and she had a fake butt and fake boobs. My date and I left after we were finished with our dinner. On our way driving home my date could tell i was still bothered by the black man comments about my hair. I know I should be natural and I usually am natural but I decided to wear my hair straight whats the big deal? I wanted to switch up my hair do. I think women have that right to wear their hair as they choose. My date asked me this question...." Why do black men criticize black women for wearing straight hair accusing them of looking like a white woman but black men love white women with black women features like big butts and big boobs. Why are white women with black women features considered sexy but black women with white women features is considered ugly. For example Kim kardashian, Iggy, Nicole Austin all have fake big asses but black men love them and worship their fake asses. Gabrielle Union, Rapper Eve, Serena Williams all wear weaves and straight hair but black men hate them and claim they are copying white women calling them hairhats but black men don't think white girls with fake asses are trying to look like black women. Please stare your thoughts on this. Is this hypocrisy and contradiction or what?"
