I kept bumping into David at events (like Philip Duff Show stalwart Tony Sach's regular get-togethers for writers and other waifs and strays) and he was always good fun to chat with, so me and him sat down in a shady spot inside Central Park* on a hot-as-balls day, on camp chairs, with a nearby wheelie cooler bag full of ice cold Negra Modelo beers and some 1960s IW Harper Whiskey (him) and some special releases from Widow Jane whiskey & FEW whiskey (me). He's hilarious, as you'll learn, and seems to have lived a dozen lives, from personally applying to boarding school at the ripe old age of 13, to being a commentator at the CrossFit games, to exiting successful businesses he created, becoming a writer, narrowly avoiding becoming an immigration lawyer, and a whole bunch more. We didn't get around to the half of it, so me and him are going to do this all over again as soon as both find a window. The boys drink and review Negra Modelo for Cinco de Mayo, then discuss the jury system. Pigweed was recently called to jury duty, and the boys discuss the history and development of the jury system, and some of the interesting details about it. What does a "jury of peers" mean? How are juries selected? The main purpose of a jury is protection against arbitrary government power. Is it doing that effectively? What is jury nullification, and is it a good thing or not? What should we do when a jury is under public pressure to reach a pre-determined verdict? Should we replace citizen juries with professional juries?
It's our 5th Anniversary this month. As part of the celebration, we will post flashback episodes all month long to celebrate and say thank you. If it were not for you, our Runcation Nation community, we would not have had this show for the last five years, had some of the most amazing experiences, and created lasting friendships in this community. Next up is part 2 of our interview with running icon Kathrine Switzer! SHOUT OUTS Congratulations to all the members of the Runcation Nation who completed training runs, live, and virtual races this week! Best of luck to those who are getting ready to race this weekend! EAT It's Cinco De Mayo, and we hit one of our favorite local restaurants for some incredible Mexican food. Mexico Lindo is here in Cape Coral. We had table-side guacamole, a Ribeye Ala Mexicana, and Beef Tamales. They were delicious! This little place has excellent service and tasty entrees to celebrate this festive holiday. Do you have a favorite place to celebrate Cinco De Mayo? Let us know! DRINK Mexico Lindo has an extensive cocktail menu and beer list. We ordered a super-sized Negra Modelo. Put your hazmat suits on, and press play! We're still practicing our social distancing, but here is an episode you likely haven't heard. It was unearthed from the historical archives of our Patreon mini series, "My Dad's Fridge." In this short-form podcast, we review and learn the history behind some of the most iconic beers in the world & your dad's fridge (bottom shelf, behind the mayonnaise). Welcome back to Conversation on Tap! In this episode, Joel and Jose were joined by Gloria Soto, a Santa Maria councilwoman, to discuss how the city is responding to the Coronavirus. Because of social distancing, this was our fourth episode to be recorded via Skype, so please bear with us as the sound quality wasn't especially at its finest. As we started the episode, Joel said that he was out of beer, while Jose drank the last of the delicious Negra Modelo in his refrigerator. For their FRED Talks, Jose talked about why Easter is celebrated on Sundays, and Joel shared a link (IHME) and his frustration that the media isn't comparing the predictions for Coronavirus and the actual numbers. In the main segment, Joel, Jose, and Gloria talked about her work on the City Council to confront the challenge of the Coronavirus in our community. Gloria was born and raised in Santa Maria to parents who immigrated to the United States in 1988. Now, after a year into her first term, she has been leading the fight to keep people in their homes and to keep businesses in their spaces. We also discuss how she has been working to help small businesses in our community and opportunities to make housing more affordable. One of the challenges that she has had to confront is a cultural insensitivity by some in City Hall who don't understand the immigrant or working class people in our city. So, she has made sure to get out Coronavirus information and practices out to Spanish speaking and Mixtec speaking residents. We also take time to thank our field workers and medical staff, who are working to feed our families and bring us healing, respectively. It was quite the discussion with a very charming and intelligent young woman! In the final segment, Joel talked about how he has been listening to Bill Withers' music and playing a game called JetPunk-- and now he knows where Angola is! Jose talked about playing the new Spider-Man game and the new Star Wars: Fallen Order game. That's all for this week, but keep up with the Podcast by following us on Facebook and Instagram. Cheers!
Welcome back to Conversation on Tap! In this episode, Joel and Jose were joined by Mike Lewis, the managing editor and co-founder of Where Peter Is, to discuss Pope Francis and his reactionary critics. Because of social distancing, this was our second episode to be recorded via Skype, so please bear with us as the sound quality wasn't especially at its finest. We will improve the sound, hopefully, as we do more episodes using Skype. As we started the episode, Joel grabbed himself a brew called The Dog Ate My Homework, while Jose drank a delicious Negra Modelo. For their FRED Talks, Jose talked about why God isn't punishing us with the Coronavirus, and Joel talked about the Semmelweis Effect. In the main segment, Joel, Jose, and Mike talked about the impetus for creating Where Peter Is, an online Catholic media outlet. Much of the conversation focused on Pope Francis' vision of the Church-- and how right-wing reactionaries have tried to thwart that vision through the use of Catholic media that has become increasingly similar to Fox News. We also talked about some of Pope Francis' critics, from Cardinal Burke to Raymond Arroyo, as well as allies, from Cardinal Tagle to Austen Ivereigh. We end the segment by looking forward to who Mike thinks could inherit the papacy. In the final segment, Joel talked about a pianist named Olafson and encouraged people to check out healthdata.org. Jose ended the show by giving a rundown of the Netflix series called The Tiger King. That's all for this week, but keep up with the Podcast by following us on Facebook and Instagram. Cheers!
You've all seen/heard so much about the Coronavirus over the past few weeks. This is a big deal, but we're freaking the eff out as Americans. What's going on? What can I do? How can I stay safe? Where can I get a great Mexican beer? I try to answer these questions and more in this special report. Don't forget to review and send me a message about it so that you can be entered to win this snappy new smartwatch! Munich-Style Dunkel or European-Style Dark Lager(Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)An old friend of Bavaria, Munich Dunkels are smooth, rich, and complex without being overly heady or heavy. They boast brilliant ruby hues from the large amounts of Munich malts used, and these malts also create a fuller-bodied beer. In addition, the decoction brewing process lends much depth and richness of flavor. Little to no hop aroma is detectable; the nose is dominated by malty notes of bread, nuts, and perhaps a touch of chocolate. Hop varieties used tend to be German Noble varieties like Tettnanger and Hallertau. Bitterness is often moderate, with just enough to balance out any sweetness. -2 Subcategories:A.Subcategory: Munich-Style DunkelDunkels do not offer an overly sweet impression, but rather a balance between maltand dark malt sweetness and hop character.-Color – Light Brown to Brown-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Malt character is low to medium, with chocolate, roast, bread or biscuit aromas and flavors contributed by the use of dark Munich malt.-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.-Perceived Bitterness: Medium-low to Medium-Body: Low to Medium-Low-ABV: 4.8%-5.3%B. Five We’ve talked about your Next Four Beers and Another Four beers. This time we’re asking you to try 5. These beers are off the beaten path and away from “normal” tasting beer. You don’t have to drink these specific beers because you might have trouble finding all of them. All we’re asking is that you go to your edge to try things you wouldn’t normally drink. Beers on the show: Arrogant Bastard from Stone, Triple Bock from Sam Adams, Oude Geuze, Negra Modelo, and random home brew that might have been made with a Mr. Beer kit. Homework: Try a home brew and go to the edge. Class: We talk about the beer that you should try next. Which are four beers that are not too far from the beer that you might be drinking now. The difference? These are world class examples of the style. Homework: Try them yourself: Widmer Hefeweizen, Pilsner Urquell, Negra Modelo, Guinness Draught (in a can). If you can't find these examples at your local then look for something that matches the style.
This time around, we have some stuff to show and tell! There's new intro music to the podcast courtesy of our long endeavors in the studio (it's very rough, so chances are you won't even recognize it by the time the album comes along), as well as, somewhere in there, a complete song! Lots more beer is drunk, of course, contributing to this week's beercast (Negra Modelo, Fat Tire and Deschutes' Jubilale, if you must know). More discussions of our lives and about life in general, and of course news about our forthcoming album, which comes ever more forth every week.
