Anna and Annie discuss the 2024 Booker Prize Longlist. Our book of the week is WOO WOO by Ella Baxter. The latest novel from the award-winning author of New Animal, this tells the story of Sabine, an artist about to open her exhibition. She faces the pressure of the show and the terror of being stalked. Both disturbing and funny, Baxter's writing is strong, visceral and on point. We loved this one! Progress seems slow on connecting all corners of Wisconsin to high speed internet access. Stephanie Hoff gets an update from Brittany Beyer. She's an Extension specialist in community economic development out of Rhinelander. She has been on the Governor's Task Force on Broadband Access since it started in 2020, chairing the task force for the first two years. At the end of July, Wisconsin got a stamp of approval from the federal government for its plan to expand broadband. The state will get $1.1 billion to bring high-speed internet access to all of its residents by the end of the decade. She tells us about the dollars that will soon come into the state. But first, she reminds us why barriers to high-speed internet exist in the first place.Ease of access is a key for agribusinesses developing their website. Pam Jahnke chats with Ashley Huhn from the Steffes Group about their newly remodeled website and the different elements that farmers and buyers are keeping track for fall sales. Paid for by the Steffes Group.Wisconsin's cattle industry is preparing for some animal identification changes coming in November. Tressa Lacey, president of the WI Cattlemen's Association, says although some are pushing back on the new requirements, change has to happen somewhere. It's that time of the year - field days. Farmers are taking a look at what products and technology worked, and didn't work in their fields. Ben Jarboe focuses on cover crops as a tool for weed control with Dan Smith, the program manager for the extensions division of nutrient pest management. Smith explains how their research looks at cover crops as a weed management practice, and when to best terminate them. He also explains what they have seen as more prominent weeds this year and what herbicides have been effective. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: FarmKind (a new animal fundraising platform) is live - Please DON'T DONATE, published by Aidan Alexander on August 2, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR FarmKind is a new effective giving platform dedicated to tackling factory farming We've just launched - www.farmkind.giving There are many ways you can help us if you're interested - details below FarmKind's aim Factory farming is one of the most neglected cause areas relative to the amount of suffering it causes. Globally, Farmed Animal Funders estimates that just $200 million is channeled specifically to this issue,[1] while more than 10 billion land animals (excluding insects) are factory farmed annually in the US alone.[2] Even when it comes to effective altruism, factory farming is a minority within a minority. We estimate that less than 10% of the funds raised by effective giving organizations go to factory farming.[3] All this despite the fact that proven interventions in the lives of factory-farmed animals remain arguably some of the most cost-effective ways to prevent suffering that we have yet discovered. The lack of funding has several consequences: 1. Proven strategies for reducing suffering are being scaled more slowly. 2. Promising new interventions struggle to get off the ground. 3. The space is overly reliant on a few large funders, posing many structural risks. FarmKind's mission is to increase funding for farmed animal charities by bringing in new donors and donations. To do this, we've built a platform inspired by the innovative work of Prof. Joshua Greene and Dr. Lucius Caviola and their Giving Multiplier platform, tailored specifically to raise money for farmed animal charities. People donate because they feel compassion but also want their donations to be spent wisely and have an impact. FarmKind seeks to meet both these motivations so people can feel good while they do a huge amount of good too. We work with expert charity evaluators, including Animal Charity Evaluators, to find charities that are super-effective at making the lives of factory-farmed animals better. We help donors give to a curated set of these charities while, at the same time, splitting their donation with their favorite charities. Then FarmKind boosts both donations with a bonus. We hope that, by increasing funding to these higher-profile and more thoroughly evaluated organizations, we will be able to free up other funders to look at interventions that require more vetting than we currently have the capacity for. Our story so far FarmKind was incubated in the first Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program of 2024, in April this year. Since then, founders Aidan Alexander and Thom Norman have been working to launch our giving platform as soon as possible. We have now launched our platform and are receiving donations. You can find us here: www.farmkind.giving To get to this point so far would not have been possible without the amazing support of a lot of people who want to see a better world for animals. In particular, our platform would not have been possible without Hive's Douglas Browne, Violet Studios or Every.org. Many others have helped us get to launch, are too many people to list here, but please check out our acknowledgements on our site here. DON'T donate through us (please) If you're reading this post, our platform isn't aimed at you. We aim to convert new donors to supporting effective farmed animal welfare. If people who would have given to our recommended charities anyway donate through our platform it doesn't add any value, and what's more, by using up limiting matching funding, donating through our platform hurts our ability incentivise counterfactual donations. If, however, you're the type of person who gives to ACE recommended charities already, you may be interested in giving to them via our bonus...

With roughly one-third of all food produced globally lost or wasted, the food industry is pivoting towards sustainable practices aimed at curbing these losses. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about how different sectors within the food industry are combating food waste on Stop Food Waste Day 2024 and beyond. For example, tech companies are creating software and systems that help restaurants and food producers optimize their inventory and Grocery chains are also revising their supply chain practices. Upcycling, turning by-products or waste materials into new, high-quality products, is another innovative approach gaining traction. The hospitality sector, including hotels and resorts, is also making substantial strides by implementing programs that analyze and improve food preparation and consumption patterns. The team wonders whether tech innovations like AI and blockchain can make a significant impact in cutting food waste across the supply chain. Also in this episode, Sydney talks about the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare's (BBFAW) recent report, which evaluated 150 prominent food companies and assigned the majority a low-performance impact rating due to their poor animal welfare practices. According to the report, approximately 95 percent of food companies worldwide recognize farm animal welfare as a central business issue. Despite this, none have reached Tier 1 ‘Leadership' status in the BBFAW rankings. Many of the largest food companies, including Mars, Mondelez International and Starbucks, show no evidence of farm animal welfare on their business agendas, with Tier 6 rankings. Companies like Domino's Pizza and Yum China Holdings are yet to even publish a formal farm animal welfare policy. The team posits that consumers shouldn't have to pay a premium for ethical animal products, but rather that it should be the standard. Hello, book clubbers! This month, we read the debut novel ‘New Animal' by Australian author Ella Baxter. This book, set initially in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, then later in suburban Tasmania, follows the life of Amelia Aurelia; an embalmer who spends her days in funeral homes, painting the faces of the dead, and nights sleeping with strangers via the dating apps on her phone. More than anything, though, this is a novel of grief - by chapter four Amelia's beloved mother dies by falling down the stairs, and the reader joins the protagonist as she wades through the all-consuming pain of loss. Join us in the all the book chat over on our Insta, @theshamelessbookclub, and our TikTok, @theshamelessbookclub. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing a new animal advocacy podcast: How I Learned to Love Shrimp, published by James Özden on April 13, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Calling all animal-interested folks! Excited to share that we've launched a new animal-focused podcast series. How I Learned to Love Shrimp is a podcast about promising ways to help animals and build the animal advocacy movement. We showcase interesting and exciting ideas within animal advocacy and will release bi-weekly, hour-long interviews with people who are working on these projects. We start the series with an introductory episode with Amy and I discussing why we wanted to start this podcast, the topics we want to cover, and some of our own views on various thorny animal advocacy topics. Our first proper episode is with Dave Coman-Hidy, former President of The Humane League. In this, we discuss the age-old debate of welfare vs abolitionism, the pros and cons of measurability, as well as promising strategies Dave is keen to see more of within animal advocacy. You can check out the episodes across all major providers (e.g. Spotify, Google Podcasts & Apple Podcasts) and also access them on our website. Please let us know what you think, give us guest recommendations and share with anyone who you think could be interested to hear. Next month the Animal Agriculture Alliance will be under the leadership of a new president and CEO. The Alliance, a decades-old consortium of trade associations, companies and other stakeholder groups in the food animal sector, recently announced the promotion of Hannah Thompson-Weeman, the organization's current vice president of strategic engagement, following the departure of its longtime president, Kay Johnson Smith. Johnson Smith, who has served as president and CEO across three decades, is joining the executive leadership team at Dairy MAX, a regional dairy council representing farmers in eight states in the southern and southwestern U.S. In this episode, we talk with Thompson-Weeman about the mission of the Alliance, how the societal conversation regarding animal welfare has evolved over the past 30 years, and her vision for the future of the organization.
