A Voice Born from StruggleAllyson Galloway didn't come from spotlight or luxury—she came from survival. Raised in Frayser, one of Memphis, Tennessee's toughest neighborhoods, her early life was a constant battle. Her mother struggled with addiction, her father was often absent and gripped by alcoholism, and home life was a mix of hunger, chaos, and heartbreak. “I never thought I would amount to anything,” she admits. But deep down, Allyson always had a spark—and music was her escape.Country Roots and Choir StagesEven through the turmoil, music was always close. Her grandparents, who eventually took her in, only allowed country music in the house. Legends like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley shaped her earliest understanding of storytelling through song. “My life lessons all came from country music,” she says. At school, she shined in every Christmas play and choir performance, stealing moments in the spotlight to feel seen, heard, and valued.Music for the Broken OnesAllyson's music isn't manufactured, it's real. Her songs speak directly to “the broken ones,” people who've experienced loss, addiction, poverty, and pain. Songs like The Broken Ones and Nobody Wins are heartfelt anthems of survival and healing. One of the most powerful moments of her career came when a terminally ill man reached out. He told Allyson that he wanted her music playing in his final moments. For seven months, he listened to her daily during chemotherapy. She never forgot his name or his story.“I just want someone to know they aren't alone,” she says. “Whether you listen to country, rap, or pop—we are all human, and we bleed from similar veins.”Please consider adding her music to your playlist or radio show. Chuck Todd breaks down the political fallout as the government shutdown begins disrupting air travel—and both parties claim they're “winning.” He argues that when politicians are upending people's lives, no one is really winning. The conversation turns to Israel, where Prime Minister Netanyahu faces deepening domestic backlash and a loss of international allies. With 66% of Israelis wanting the war in Gaza to end and growing calls for Bibi's ouster, Israel's reliance on the U.S. has never been greater—or more politically divisive.Chuck also examines how the Israel issue is surfacing in U.S. campaign politics, from Democratic primaries to GOP power plays. With Republicans clearing primary fields and Democrats facing scandals like Jay Jones' in Virginia, both parties are wrestling with internal fractures—and the risks of clinging to power at any cost. Then, Chuck sits down with Stanford political scientist Adam Bonica to unpack the dark underbelly of political fundraising. Bonica reveals how the Democratic consulting firm Mothership Strategies helped shape modern campaign fundraising — and how their tactics, often resembling internet scams, have extracted hundreds of millions from small-dollar donors, many of whom are elderly or unaware they've been opted into recurring donations. Together, they explore how much of that money never reaches campaigns at all, instead being funneled into consultant fees and internal operations that border on money laundering. The conversation broadens into the systemic corruption of campaign finance: both parties' use of apocalyptic fear-mongering, the rise of Super PACs with minimal voter impact, and how America's extreme wealth inequality has distorted democratic accountability. Bonica explains why the public now views the very need to raise money as inherently corrupt — and how anti-corruption could be the strongest defense against authoritarian drift. As billions pour into elections with diminishing effect, Chuck and Adam question whether the next era of U.S. politics can ever be disentangled from the cash that drives it.Finally, Chuck gives his ToddCast Top 5 governor's seats most likely to flip parties, and answers listeners' questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment.Got injured in an accident? In a system built to create clear winners and losers, the absence of a decisive victory can feel unsettling. Yet, with no real winner emerging, we're given a chance to look beyond the usual metrics of success. Both Kamala and Trump supporters, despite their differences, will continue to share the same country. This is a moment to recognize that politicians are human beings first, imperfect like the rest of us, and it's crucial to resist the tendency to idolize them. True progress doesn't lie in division or hero-worship but in our collective ability to coexist and work toward a shared future. While the outcome may be unclear, our response can be powerful—choosing collaboration, finding common purpose, and building the bonds that make us one nation, even in times of uncertainty.
On this week's show, Dana and Stephen are joined by Supreme Friend of the Podcast (SFOP) Isaac Butler, author of The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act. The trio first explores The Wild Robot, DreamWork Animation's handcrafted, lovingly made film that's the surprise of the year. Lupita Nyong'o voices ROZ, an old-fashioned robot powered by supremely advanced A.I. who must learn about and adapt to her new wild surroundings. Then, they dissect Nobody Wants This, a new Netflix series starring Kristen Bell (who plays a sex podcaster) and Adam Brody as a hot rabbi. Although there are obvious charms, the show's “will they, won't they” rom-com beats can often feel, at best, gratingly familiar, and at worst, bizarre and unthoughtful, particularly in its portrayal of Jewish women. Finally, the Criterion Collection, is “a catalog so synonymous with cinematic achievement that it has come to function as a kind of film Hall of Fame,” writes Joshua Hunt for The New York Times. The panel dives into the wonderful world of ‘Closet Picks,' a viral video format in which celebrities and movie buffs head into the Criterion Collection stockroom and pluck high-quality DVDs and Blu-rays off its shelves while explaining their personal significance. Also mentioned in this episode: “The Wild Robot Has an Intelligence That's Anything But Artificial” by Dana Stevens for Slate. “‘Nobody Wants This' Pits Jewish Women Against ‘Shiksas.' Nobody Wins.” By Jessica Grose for The New York Times. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel extols the joys of being on the ground. Inspired by Chris Black's column for GQ, “How I Learned to Love a Layover,” the trio discusses how they spend their time in airports. Email us at culturefest@slate.com. How do we maintain our lighting control systems? We've said it before and Kelly says it again. Education! - and interoperability, but we're not there yet - so, education! The facilities manager who leaves that job 5 years down the road is then replaced by a new facilities manager who doesn't know the system and doesn't know who to contact. Now the lighting doesn't perform as it should and the company that installed it receives complaints. Nobody wins. Listen to this episode and learn how sales reps can help your projects from the very beginning to long after the building is occupied. Kelly is in the DC metro area, living 45 minutes south of DC in a rural town on the Patuxent River with his wife and 2 toddlers. His career started as an IBEW Local 26 Electrician, where he spent a few years installing lighting controls. The draw for him was seeing the end-product of a project and seeing everything go from inoperable to working. He followed this over to Lutron as a field service tech performing startups and servicing systems for their commercial division. He was pulled by his best friend over to Chesapeake Lighting, when they needed an outside specification salesperson for lighting controls. He primarily calls on engineers and lighting designers, but sways in the balance of supporting the inside team, distributors, contractors, and end-users.

Nobody wins in DeSantis' war on woke Sun Sentinel, by Rae Leiner, on Oct. 29 2023, https://www.sun-sentinel.com/2023/10/29/nobody-wins-in-desantis-war-on-woke-opinion/The Non-Prophets, Episode 22.45.1 featuring Kelley Laughlin, Cindy Plaza, Jimmy Jr. and Aaron JensenIn the Sunshine State, Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a "war on woke," targeting teachers, medical providers, and marginalized communities, turning schools into political battlegrounds. This results in an exodus of educators and a plummeting teacher-to-population ratio.Jimmy Jr appreciated the author's use of "incubator" to describe harmful laws spreading across states. He criticized warlike language, emphasizing its impact on marginalized communities, causing fear and divisiveness. Cindy characterized the GOP as rooted in fascist principles, relying on strongman narratives and vague terms like "woke."Kelley pushed back against the idea that the war on woke originated solely in Florida, asserting it is a nationwide phenomenon. DeSantis is following a pre-established playbook trying to gain attention, and is becoming more radical in his presidential aspirations. Kelley mentioned DeSantis' endorsement by the governor of Iowa, indicating broader adoption of these strategies among Republicans.Aaron defended the concept of being "woke," emphasizing kindness and empathy. He criticized the GOP for lacking a substantive policy platform and resorting to culture wars. Aaron stressed countering these ideas through collective efforts to make the country better.Jimmy Jr agreed with Cindy's analysis, linking the GOP's need for a strongman to a playbook mentality. DeSantis, facing challenges in achieving his goals, adopts a more aggressive approach. He acknowledged the impact on teachers, doctors, and students, emphasizing the need to combat divisive rhetoric.Cindy added that DeSantis is trapped by extreme positions he adopted to secure his initial election. She expressed curiosity about the governor's mindset and the challenge of maintaining these positions while navigating broader public sentiment.Kelley shifted the discussion to the shortage of OBGYNs in Florida, debunking the idea that the war on woke directly causes this issue. He attributes the shortage to economic factors, including lower doctor pay. Kelley highlights the population increase in Florida, exacerbating the problem. The panel briefly touched on the war on woke's impact on minority communities, expressing concern about the marginalization of these groups and potential long-term consequences. In the final segment, the panel reflected on the harm caused by the war on woke. Aaron emphasized the decline in our ability to listen, believe others, and work towards compromise. Jimmy Jr predicted a decline in education quality due to the mass exodus of teachers. Cindy echoed concerns about the societal shift away from collaboration. As the conversation was closing, Kelley noted that war on woke candidates did not fare well in recent school board elections, providing a glimmer of hope. The panel emphasized countering divisive rhetoric and working collectively to address challenges posed by the war on woke.

Remember Jay-Z's line "nobody wins when the family feuds" in the acclaimed 4:44 album? Well, when family fights over land it can get downright ugly! The cuzzin's Melissa L. Jones and Falani Spivey of Byrd's Nest Box dive right on in and open up about their personal challenges in attempting to acquire land within the family. Falani points out that when we often discuss land loss, many refer to the discriminatory USDA practices, imminent domain, and other racist acts that have swindled black families out of their land, but we forget about the internal family feuds that result in land loss as well. Tune in for this lively Cuzzin' Talk episode!
