Collectively, the global student protests demanding university divestments from Israel are one of the largest mass protests in recent history. Student protesters are risking their futures as they demand their institutions financially divest from Israel and companies connected to supplying weapons and technology to Israel's government.Last week, in Calgary, police descended on the University of Calgary campus with riot gear, using shields, batons and rubber bullets, to forcibly remove a group of protesters from an encampment set up on campus. On today's podcast, Vinita speaks with Pratim Sengupta, professor of learning sciences at the University of Calgary. Sengupta was there the night police engulfed the protesters and says the violence he saw shook him to his core. Also on the podcast is Sarita Srivastava, a university leader of a much smaller arts and design campus in downtown Toronto. Srivastava (sister to Vinita) is a sociologist by background and author of the recent book, "Are You Calling Me a Racist?" Together, they look back on what's been happening on campuses amid this mass protest but also plot out a new - gentler - way forward than the one we've been witnessing.

Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Ep.155 features Shannon T. Lewis (b. 1981 in Toronto, Canada; lives and works in Berlin, Germany). She is an artist of Caribbean descent who reconfigures human forms and the spaces they inhabit within her complex and vivid paintings. Lewis begins with assemblage — the forefront of her practice — utilizing fragments of form and space. Particularly inspired by social cues of ethnicity, whimsical aspects in the work evoke a notion of freedom by examining marginalized identities.    The use of architectural elements is a recurring element, oftentimes inspired by ornate iconography. Painted and interlaced limbs reconnoiter the history of femininity and its relation to Blackness. Lewis offers a window into freedom and body politics as the figurative compositions explore surrealism. Haunting portraits derived from archival and personal sources, Lewis imbues the past and the present to construct a utopian future.    Lewis has exhibited in Canada, the United States, Trinidad, Switzerland, England, and Germany. She has a Bachelor of Arts from OCADU in Toronto (Canada) and a Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London (UK).  Portrait of Shannon T. Lewis, 2022. Photographed by Evan Jenkins. The panelists were Ariba Jahan, Innovation Director at Ad Council, Judd Antin, Director of Research at Airbnb, and Komal Faiz, a UX researcher at Zensurince. I wasn’t worried about a fire. We edited it out for the podcast but you can see it unedited on our youtube channel. In September, the 10K crew went on location to the 2017 Ontario Universities’ Fair, to interview a dozen higher ed leaders about trends in innovation. Sara Diamond has worked in higher education for 3 decades, at BC’s Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Alberta’s Banff Centre, and Ontario’s OCAD University, where she has been President since 2005. In this special bonus episode, edited to 10 minutes, Ken asks Sara 3 key questions about higher ed innovation. Innovations at OCAD? Sara proudly points to OCADU’s new Academic Plan, which brings together STEAM+D – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (or Medicine) with Art and Design in a powerful interdisciplinary combination. All OCAD students will be provided with basic programming skills so they can be “digital citizens.” OCADU also has a strong focus on Indigenous knowledge, culture and creativity, and “decolonization” is OCAD’s first guiding principle. OCAD has diversified its curriculum and built a cosmopolitan campus, with international students from around the world. And OCAD is opening several new buildings, including the waterfront Campus for the Connected World, and the Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers, both of which will focus on new experiential and work-integrated learning opportunities for students. OCAD’s business incubator for recent graduates, the Imagination Catalyst, has a very high success rate launching new ventures. And OCAD is partnering with UOIT to bring together design and hard science for STEAM+D. The Decade Ahead? Over the next decade, Sara predicts a world of continuous learning in which universities offer increasingly flexible degrees, badges and stackable microcredentials, as well as flexible timetables for working and entrepreneurial students. Digital delivery will intensify, but the “sociality” of learning will continue to bring students together in one place to learn. She also anticipates some really dynamic “international aggregates of institutions” offering students trans-national learning experiences and credentials. And Sara projects ongoing and increasing investment in “blue-sky” investigator-driven research, and the increasing importance of artificial intelligence in the “expressive economy.” Culture of Innovation? Sara emphasizes that university leaders must support the integration of research and teaching, and maintain curricular openness to new learning. They must be “militant proponents of diversity”, be highly collaborative across campus, and also reinforce the “porosity” of the university, building partnerships with industry and external organizations to help build their communities. Ultimately, Sara observes, university research can help solve the world’s big problems, so long as we stay “at the coal face” of the real world. Bio: Cat Bluemke and Jonathan Carroll work together as executive members of the new media business art collective Tough Guy Mountain. In her individual practice, Cat works in installation, visual art, performance and textile, often contrasting the art economy with the greater economy. She is currently pursuing her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Jon produces visuals, software, video games and makes music under the moniker People Tanning. He currently works as an educator and freelancer. It was on Jon's advice that I decided to turn the art / work project into a podcast. Look for Tough Guy Mountain's virtual reality video game being released in November 2017 through Trinity Square Video's upcoming V/Art project. Recording Notes: This interview was recorded at the former Tough Guy Mountain headquarters in the rectory space of St. George the Martyr's Anglican Church, nestled between the church itself-- the venue home of Toronto's Music Gallery-- and the former site of OCADU's student gallery-- now bulldozed for condo development. Visual and performance artist Jennifer Chan was present while the interview was taken making use of the laundry facilities.
