How are victims of intimate partner violence meant to protect themselves—and, often, their children—without winding up dead, in hospital, or prison? It's a situation that many find themselves in. Approximately 15 percent of women in the United States are victims of intimate partner violence, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. But the legal system is not set up to help them. The book is designed to be accessible to students or practitioners without the extensive math background that is taken for granted in typical econometrics textbooks. Psychologists test research questions using a variety of methods. Most research relies on either correlations or experiments. With correlations, researchers measure variables as they naturally occur in people and compute the degree to which two variables go together. With experiments, researchers actively make changes in one variable and watch for changes in another variable. Experiments allow researchers to make causal inferences. Other types of methods include longitudinal and quasi-experimental designs. Many factors, including practical constraints, determine the type of methods researchers use. Often researchers survey people even though it would be better, but more expensive and time consuming, to track them longitudinally. Dr Marnie Howlett presents an engaging and thought-provoking look at the cartographical causes and consequences of the war. She looks at Ukraine's position between East and West and the implications of its long history of shifting borders with Russia. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, much attention within political and military circles has been devoted to examining the origins of the seemingly unexpected war. However, these analyses have primarily explored the foreign policy objectives of Russia and the motivations of its president. This talk will instead consider the cartographical causes and consequences of the conflict. In drawing on cartographical material gathered through ethnographic fieldwork in three Ukrainian regions between 2018-2022, this talk will show how the war is connected to Ukraine's position between the East and West. In particular, the ways its borderland status has been utilised throughout history by both neighbouring Russia and the European Union will be considered, especially how it has complicated processes of state- and nation-building since the state's independence in 1991. Finally, the talk will argue for the importance of realising the nuances at the grassroots in Ukraine for understanding both the Russia-Ukraine war and the future direction of the country. Dr Marnie Howlett is a Departmental Lecturer in Politics (Qualitative Methods) in the Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR) at the University of Oxford. She holds a PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), as well as a BA (High Honours) in International Studies and MA in Political Science from the University of Saskatchewan. Dr Howlett's research centres on the intersection of cartography, nationalism, and geopolitics within the former Soviet Union, particularly Ukraine. Her interests also include research ethics, and the use of visual and spatial methods for political science research. Dr Howlett currently teaches on the postgraduate Qualitative Methods in Political Science, Research Design in Comparative Political Science, and Comparative Political Science courses in the DPIR. She is also working on a book monograph, Imagined Borderlands, which explores the intersection and overlap of imagined and territorial cartographies to better explain contemporary nationalism and politics in Ukraine. Her research has appeared in The Conversation and on media channels in Canada, the UK, Europe, and Asia. Prior to pursuing her PhD, Dr Howlett served as a legislative intern and policy analyst with the Saskatchewan Legislature in Regina, Canada. She has volunteered extensively in Canada and Ukraine with the non-governmental organisation, Help Us Help The Children, which works with Ukrainian orphans and families of war. Dr Howlett also served as an international electoral observer on three missions with CANADEM during Ukraine's presidential and parliamentary elections in 2019.

Her scholarship is characterized by three interrelated areas of inquiry: prejudice and discrimination, identity and acculturation, and more recently, body image among women of color. She has also written in the area of multicultural research methodology. The majority of her research is guided by the questions "What factors lead to discrimination against ethnic minorities?" and "What impacts perceptions of experienced discrimination?" The two populations that she has primarily focused on are Arab/Middle Eastern Americans and African Americans. Although overt discrimination towards ethnic minorities has decreased over the years, the practice of more covert, subtle forms of prejudice remains. The events of September 11, 2001, however, reintroduced more explicit forms of prejudice towards Arab/Middle Eastern Americans, and those perceived to be Muslim, complicating the dialogue on discrimination in the United States. Awad is concerned with how prejudicial attitudes and ideology impact attitudes towards ethnic minorities generally and within specific domains such as the workplace and higher education. In addition, she examines how racial/ethnic identity and acculturation impact ethnic minorities' perception of discrimination. Most recently, she has expanded her identity and acculturation research to the study of body image concerns among women of color. Awad received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and B.S. in Psychology from John Carroll University. Maryam Kia-Keating, Ph.D., (website) (Twitter: @drkiakeating) is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the UCSB Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and founder of Power of Drishti, providing meditations and music for changemakers, first responders, clinicians, frontline workers, activists, and other people on-the-go. She oversees the Trauma & Adversity, Resilience & Prevention (TARP) research program at the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. After attending Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and Boston University, Dr. Kia-Keating completed her post-doctoral work at the University of California, San Diego, and served as the Clinical Director of a secondary prevention school-based program for adolescents. Dr. Kia-Keating's scholarship is focused on resilience in the context of experiences of trauma, adversity, and toxic stress for diverse communities, including refugees and immigrants from around the globe. She uses participatory and human-centered design approaches, working in partnership with communities to find innovative solutions to complex needs. Her community co-designed HEROES program for parents and children teaches mindfulness, parent-child attunement, and restorative communication to support resilience, and mitigate the negative impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). She was appointed to the American Psychological Association (APA) Task Force on refugees resettled in the United States. Dr. Kia-Keating's research has been funded by the NIH, and her articles have been published in high-impact academic journals. She provides consultation on child development, mental health, and authentic representation for childrens' media, and writes for Psychology Today. Mona M. Amer, Ph.D., (website) is a Professor of clinical and community psychology and founding chair of the Department of Psychology at the American University in Cairo. She co-founded and served as first elected president of the American Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African Psychological Association (AMENA-Psy). Dr. Amer's research and policy interests focus on racial/ethnic disparities in behavioral health, with specializations in the Arab and Muslim minorities. She is interested in how immigration experiences, acculturation stressors, discrimination, and minority status contribute to disparities, and ways to eliminate inequities through culturally competent services, community-based programming, and social policy. Mona Amer, Maryam Kia-Keating, and Germine “Gigi” Awad, about their paper in the American Psychologist titled “A model of cumulative racial-ethnic trauma among Americans of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) descent.” They discuss the creation of the model and provide details about its various components, contextualizing them with present-day examples. Her scholarship is characterized by three interrelated areas of inquiry: prejudice and discrimination, identity and acculturation, and more recently, body image among women of color. She has also written in the area of multicultural research methodology. The majority of her research is guided by the questions "What factors lead to discrimination against ethnic minorities?" and "What impacts perceptions of experienced discrimination?" The two populations that she has primarily focused on are Arab/Middle Eastern Americans and African Americans. Although overt discrimination towards ethnic minorities has decreased over the years, the practice of more covert, subtle forms of prejudice remains. The events of September 11, 2001, however, reintroduced more explicit forms of prejudice towards Arab/Middle Eastern Americans, and those perceived to be Muslim, complicating the dialogue on discrimination in the United States. Awad is concerned with how prejudicial attitudes and ideology impact attitudes towards ethnic minorities generally and within specific domains such as the workplace and higher education. In addition, she examines how racial/ethnic identity and acculturation impact ethnic minorities' perception of discrimination. Most recently, she has expanded her identity and acculturation research to the study of body image concerns among women of color. Awad received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and B.S. in Psychology from John Carroll University. Maryam Kia-Keating, Ph.D., (website) (Twitter: @drkiakeating) is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the UCSB Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and founder of Power of Drishti, providing meditations and music for changemakers, first responders, clinicians, frontline workers, activists, and other people on-the-go. She oversees the Trauma & Adversity, Resilience & Prevention (TARP) research program at the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. After attending Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and Boston University, Dr. Kia-Keating completed her post-doctoral work at the University of California, San Diego, and served as the Clinical Director of a secondary prevention school-based program for adolescents. Dr. Kia-Keating's scholarship is focused on resilience in the context of experiences of trauma, adversity, and toxic stress for diverse communities, including refugees and immigrants from around the globe. She uses participatory and human-centered design approaches, working in partnership with communities to find innovative solutions to complex needs. Her community co-designed HEROES program for parents and children teaches mindfulness, parent-child attunement, and restorative communication to support resilience, and mitigate the negative impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). She was appointed to the American Psychological Association (APA) Task Force on refugees resettled in the United States. Dr. Kia-Keating's research has been funded by the NIH, and her articles have been published in high-impact academic journals. Her research and interviews have been featured in various outlets including The Washington Post, ABC News, Conde Nast Traveler, Self-Magazine, and CNN. She provides consultation on child development, mental health, and authentic representation for childrens' media, and writes for Psychology Today. Mona M. Amer, Ph.D., (website) is a Professor of clinical and community psychology and founding chair of the Department of Psychology at the American University in Cairo. She co-founded and served as first elected president of the American Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African Psychological Association (AMENA-Psy). Dr. Amer's research and policy interests focus on racial/ethnic disparities in behavioral health, with specializations in the Arab and Muslim minorities. She is interested in how immigration experiences, acculturation stressors, discrimination, and minority status contribute to disparities, and ways to eliminate inequities through culturally competent services, community-based programming, and social policy. Dr. Amer's nearly 50 publications include two articles in the American Psychological Association's flagship journal American Psychologist and the landmark co-edited book Handbook of Arab American Psychology which was awarded the annual nonfiction award by the Arab American National Museum. Ellison Center Director Scott Radnitz presents his lecture "Revealing Schemes: The Politics of Conspiracy in Russia and the Post-Soviet Region" on January 13, 2022. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. His research deals primarily with the post-Soviet region and topics such as protests, authoritarianism, informal networks, and identity. His work employs surveys, focus groups, and experimental methodologies. His forthcoming book is “Enemies Within: The Global Politics of Fifth Columns,” edited with Harris Mylonas (GWU), and is under contract with Oxford University Press. His most recent book, “Revealing Schemes: The Politics of Conspiracy in Russia and the Post-Soviet Region” came out with Oxford University Press in 2021. It investigates why politicians in the region promote conspiratorial claims and what effects that has. His first book, “Weapons of the Wealthy: Predatory Regimes and Elite-Led Protests in Central Asia,” was published by Cornell University Press in 2010. Articles have appeared in journals including Comparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, British Journal of Political Science, Journal of Democracy, Political Geography, Political Communication, and Post-Soviet Affairs. Policy commentary has appeared in Foreign Policy, The National Interest, The Guardian, Slate, and the Monkey Cage/Washington Post blog. He is an associate editor of Communist and Post-Communist Studies, a faculty member at UW's Center for an Informed Public, and a member of the Program on New Approaches to Research and Security (PONARS) in Eurasia. Dr. Wittkowski received his PhD in computer science from the University of Stuttgart and his ScD (Habilitation) in Medical Biometry from the Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen, both Germany. He worked for 15 years with Klaus Dietz, a leading epidemiologist who coined the term “reproduction number”, on the Epidemiology of HIV before heading for 20 years the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design at The Rockefeller University, New York.
