I'm delighted to speak with Ben Ashdown this week. Ben is joined by return guest, Dr Mustafa Sarkar. Ben is a senior lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. He is part of the Sport Performance Research Group in the Sport, Health and Performance Enhancement (SHAPE) Research Centre and is a PhD researcher focusing on resilience in youth football. Ben's research interests are observational methods and assessment in sport psychology, resilience behaviours in youth football and resilience development practices. Before moving into lecturing, Ben was a research associate at The University of Nottingham on the Steps to Active Kids (STAK) project that sought to evaluate the impact of a school-based physical activity programme on outcomes including self-efficacy and obesity risk factors. Ben is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has a Postgraduate diploma in teaching in the lifelong learning sector. After graduating from York St John University on a BA (Honours) degree in Sport Studies and Psychology, Ben completed an MSc in Sport Psychology at the same institution. Mustafa is Associate Professor of Sport and Performance Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. His main area of research is on individual, team and organisational resilience in elite sport. Mustafa has a background in teaching and research with most of his research focusing on the psychology of sporting and performance excellence, specifically looking at resilience in high achievers in sport and business. Mustafa also works with coaches and organisations helping them to develop resilience in athletes and teams. We talk about a brilliant paper led by Ben and co-authored by Mustafa and Dr Chris Saward and Dr Julie Johnston entitled “Exploring the behavioral indicators of resilience in professional academy youth soccer”. The study offers insight into the observable behaviours characterising resilience in youth soccer. Participants identified 36 resilience behaviours, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the concept in this specific context. The results provide a platform to support practitioners in observing resilience behaviours and structuring practices for resilience assessment and development. The findings of this study can support youth soccer players in reflecting on their behavioural responses to in-game stressors, and thus better understand how and when they demonstrate resilience.

In episode 98, Berit Lewis shares her personal story of how she arrived at her area of interest in helping people over 50 in their later years of life. Berit talks about how she found a passion for psychology, mindfulness and learning to regulate her physical sensations as a way to manage her thoughts and emotions. This theme of primary and secondary suffering is also brought up, with Berit suggesting that our caveman brains naturally try to keep us safe but not thrive.Berit Lewis is the owner of Thriving Life, offering workshops, courses and retreats in mental well-being. As well as being an experienced and accredited Mindfulness Teacher, she holds a BA (Honours) in Psychology, a MSc in Vitality and Ageing and a MA in Communication and has carried out Mindfulness Based Vitality & Ageing research in cooperation with Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) and Leyden Academy of Vitality and Ageing in the Netherlands. I see it as a physical sensation that is feeding into a thought that is feeding into emotions. It's that awareness about how we are controlled by our innate genetic wiring in order to keep us safe, and that's not always good for our wellbeing.I've always had a passion for learning.Instead of being the emotion, or the thought, it's about stepping back and saying, I'm having the thought - that it's a passing thing that comes and goes and not get caught up in it.We are so much in our heads. I think it's very important that we take pauses to step back and just notice what's going on.This series is kindly supported by Squadcast –the remote recording platform which empowers podcasters by capturing high-quality audio and video conversations. So, it's success criteria for, for what? To avoid ageing? To stay young.? And it also really feeds into this whole story we have in our culture about aging being bad and it's something we should avoid. Ageing is not about decline. It's about transition. And so if we want to really use the term Successful Aging, I think the success criteria should be more how to embrace these transitions - according to what each one of us and as individual thinks is important to us. And the four skills that I mentioned in my book, Ageing Upwards, is to be aware of this ability to change our mindset, to see things in a different perspective and, and to be able to broaden out our awareness so that we can meet all the challenges we see with affection and self-compassion." On Mindfulness "That whole idea about being in the present moment and relaxing is a part of mindfulness. It helps us to practice our ability to pay attention to the present moment, and for some people it also helps them calm down their nervous system. But I think there's so much more to mindfulness than just being present. The true benefit from mindfulness really lies when we start to see, to gain this awareness as I explained before, so we are not just in the present moment, but we are aware of being in the present moment. It's like this extra layer of it." On Learning to Practice Mindfulness "Unfortunately, mindfulness is not a quick fix. I wish it was. It takes a lot of time and effort and it can also be unpleasant because we are seeing things that we might not want to see. And instead of running away from discomfort and pain, we're turning towards it and meeting it with curiosity. So that's what you have to be prepared for. Her motivation was to create safe, creative, and accountable experiences where the actors authenticity is celebrated and their voices are heard -- Catherine is a proud member of the Association of Acting Coaches and Educators (AACE) - adhering to their code of conduct. Our conversation with Catherine included discussing boundaries for both actors and educators, the similar ethical responsibilities between therapists and acting coaches and educators, power imbalances in acting classes, child actors involved in traumatic story narratives and the awareness their parents need to have to navigate, what can be, an intimating business.
Sculpture, and especially willow sculpture, has always fascinated me, so when I came across Emma Stothard's website, I knew I had to get in touch. Emma is a Yorkshire-based willow and wire sculptor. Inspired by the creatures of the North York Moors, where she lives, she creates sculptures of wild/domestic animals and birds. After receiving a BA Honours in Fine Art from Southampton Solent University, she briefly moved to the Somerset Levels to learn the process of growing, coppicing, bundling, and weaving willow. In 2001, thanks to a loan from The Prince's Trust, Emma started her sculpting business. Her sculptures are exhibited nationally and internationally, with some gracing the gardens of stately homes, galleries, and private homes around the country, including a large-scale portrait of King Charles III's beloved Jack Russell dog ‘Tigga', made from willow grown on the Highgrove Estate and sited there. Emma shares her take on creativity as a continual flow of movement of the materials and of ideas, the relationship between her work and the outdoor space, from which she draws her inspiration, and how she's always pushing herself to explore her own creativity and learn something new, using different scales (from mice to dragons, elephants, and small castles), different mediums (willow, silver, bronze and copper wire, clay, ceramics), and exploring new fields (such as, jewellery, homeware, and garden furniture), with the view to creating functional pieces with a sculptural aspect. She describes the process of going from a 2-D drawing to a 3-D sculpture and of welding a metal armature as a basis to weave the willow around, giving her the freedom to create the shapes she wants. She also explains why she chose willow primarily and what makes it such an evocative and enjoyable medium. From celebrating Whitby's fishing heritage to sculpting hares and six-foot tall scarecrows, there's a palpable sense of excitement in every project Emma takes on, sometimes even adding personal touches to her sculptures and, in the process, attaching a story to them. I had a wonderful time talking to Emma and learning about her creative process, so I hope you enjoy our conversation. Emma's website On Instagram: @emmastothard On FB: Emma Stothard Sculpture On Twitter: @emmastothardart ABOUT THE CREATIVITY FOR ALL PODCAST A maths teacher can be creative. So can a financial adviser, a community builder, and a yoga teacher. Not to mention a speed painter, a potter, or an actor! Creativity is everywhere and I love nothing more than to explore it in The Creativity for All Podcast, either by focusing on a theme – such as perfectionism, feeding your creative brain, or the pressure to be creative – in my solo episodes, or through my conversations with all manner of creative people. I want to challenge the perception of creativity and, in the process, debunk many myths attached to it: it's painful, for artists and the chosen few, etc. My guests and I are keen to zoom in and dissect the origin of an idea, the impulse that makes us engage with our own creativity, with the hope that it will inspire listeners to get creative too. My podcast is designed for anyone who's already being creative, or is tempted to use their creativity, in particular those of you who think they are not creative or can never be. I would love to change your mind!

In this episode of the Cognition & Co Podcast we talk to Counselling Psychologist Lekha Daya about her time on the Phelophepa Healthcare Train as Acting Manager of the Psychology Department. The Transnet Foundation started the Phelophepa Healthcare Train initiative in 1994; the two globally recognized flagship primary healthcare trains are fondly nicknamed ‘the miracle trains' and ‘trains of hope' by communities across South Africa. For many, the arrival of the Phelophepa trains in their communities signals the arrival of ‘good, clean, affordable, quality healthcare'. The name ‘Phelophepa' means ‘good, clean health' in Sotho and Venda and the news that Phelophepa is on the way, brings hope and anticipation to many of South Africa's most vulnerable citizens. For more information on the Phelophepa Train, please visit the Transnet Foundation website or contact Sharlene Jadoo via email at Sharlene.Jadoo@transnet.net Lekha Daya's Bio: I'm Lekha Daya, a work in progress and a human being before anything else. I am a Counselling Psychologist and mental health advocate focused on creating social change and disrupting the accessibility gap in mental healthcare. I recently vacated the position of Acting Head of Psychology for the Transnet Foundation on the Phelophepa II Healthcare Train. I am currently Senior Psychologist at Panda (a technology company focused on mental healthcare through an app called Panda). I did a Bachelor of Social Sciences (majoring in Psychology and Criminology) at UKZN, a BA Honours in Psychology at (previously known) NMMU, and a Masters in Counselling Psychology at Rhodes University. I completed my professional training at Rhodes as well as at PsyCaD at UJ. I have been a Registered Counsellor with the HPCSA since 2013 and have had the opportunity to apply Psychology within the NGO and public health sector, the corporate wellness sector and the education sector over the past 10 years. Iraj Abedian argues that there is a mismatch between humanity's secular evolutionary progress and the spiritual nature of mankind. This mismatch leads to a growing dysfunctionality of the global socio-economic and political order. The systemic fault lines compound over time, generating successive crises and ultimately disorder. To restore order there is need for a revolutionary impulse as proclaimed by Baha'u'llah. Humanity's current experience is testimony to this titanic clash of the secular evolutionary dynamics and Baha'u'llah's revolutionary agency. Iraj Abedian is the founder and Executive Chairman of Pan-African Capital Holdings (Pty) Ltd. He was professor of economics at the University of Cape Town, before entering the business sector in 2000 as the chief economist of Standard Bank Group of SA. He obtained his BA (Honours) and MA in Economics from University of Cape Town (UCT), before earning a PhD in Economics from Simon Fraser University in Canada in 1993. Iraj has been a member of the Baha'i' Faith since 1971, pioneered to South Africa in 1980, and has been involved in Baha'i' community activities at local, national and international levels. Currently, apart from the companies in the Pan-African Capital's portfolio, he serves the following organizations and companies: - Chairman of Board of Fortress REIT Ltd (December 2015 to date) - Member of the Advisory Board of the Auditor General of the SA Government (2006 to date). One of the greatest joys I get from hosting this podcast is meeting some incredibly inspiring people, with the goals and ambitions that can reshape our industry. Today's guest is one of those people. A North London native, his first break in fashion occurred in Australia where was an accessories designer for Crumpler. Upon graduating with a BA Honours in furniture and product design, he relocated to Vancouver, Canada where he spent eight years as a technical bag developer for Mountain Equipment Co-op, and most recently as the accessories lead for one of Canada's most accelerated start up fashion brands TenTree. During his time at TenTree, his role gave him the opportunity to visit factories overseas. On his travels to Vietnam and China, he had a meeting that would change the course of his career. And more importantly, change the way in which Chinese factories will operate in the future. What was supposed to be a routine factory audit, became an opportunity to take over a factory to implement a new manufacturing model that builds on sustainability, transparency, and raising consciousness. My guest today is Joey Pringle, the founder of Veshin Factory. He joined me all the way from the UK to talk about how he's transitioning with his new life changing decision, his plans to help rebuild a sustainable manufacturing culture, and uncovering the misconceptions of Chinese manufacturing.
