Host Lisa Laronde speaks with Melissa Alexander, a floor-covering apprentice, peer worker, mentor, and activist. They explore what inspired her to enter the skilled trades, her experiences and challenges as a floor layer, and her role as a certified peer worker. Melissa also shares her advocacy efforts with organizations like 'Walls to Bridges.' A significant part of Melissa's story is her commitment to second chances. Having served time herself, Melissa brings a unique perspective to her advocacy for inmates. She passionately believes in the power of rehabilitation and the importance of providing opportunities for former inmates to rebuild their lives. Through her work, she fights against the stigma associated with having a criminal record and highlights the need for systemic changes to support reintegration. Melissa offers valuable advice for women entering the trades, discusses the urgent need for mental health resources, and underscores the importance of second chances and education while touching on how she balances work and her personal life, advocacy, and mentoring. Melissa Alexander is a fourth-year apprentice with Local 27, specializing as a floor-covering installer. In addition to her apprenticeship, she is a certified peer worker involved in the Community Healing Project for Stella's Place and St. Stephen's Community House, where she supports youth. Melissa also works at Progress Place, a mental health rehabilitation center for adults. She has participated in the TCBN Peer Mentor Program, where she successfully completed the program and mentored six mentees. Her role involved not only helping them choose their trade but also supporting them through their struggles and guiding them toward success. Melissa's goal is to continue growing and understanding herself while helping others persevere, no matter what life throws at them. As an activist for women, Melissa completed her advanced course for floor covering installation on February 18, 2022. This achievement places her in the fifth term of her apprenticeship, with a year and a half remaining to complete her hours and qualify to write her Red Seal exam. Melissa is also a recipient of the 2023 YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction award for her work with “Walls to Bridges," an educational program that brings incarcerated non-incarcerated students together to study post-secondary courses in jails and prisons across Canada. The story of a filthy and dangerous train ditch that became one of the swankiest addresses in the world -- Park Avenue. For over 100 years, a Park Avenue address meant wealth, glamour and the high life. The Fred Astaire version of the Irving Berlin classic "Puttin' on the Ritz" revised the lyrics to pay tribute to Park Avenue: "High hats and Arrow collars/White spats and lots of dollars/Spending every dime for a wonderful time."By the 1950s, the avenue was considered the backbone of New York City with corporations setting up glittering new office towers in the International Style -- the Lever House, the Seagram Building, even the Pan Am Building. But the foundation for all this wealth and success was, in actually, a train tunnel, originally operated by the New York Central Railroad. This street, formerly known as Fourth Avenue, was (and is) one of New York's primary traffic thoroughfares. For many decades, steam locomotives dominated life along the avenue, heading into and out of Cornelius Vanderbilt's Grand Central (first a depot, then a station, eventually a terminal). However train tracks running through a quickly growing city are neither safe nor conducive to prosperity. Eventually, the tracks were covered with beautiful flowers and trees, on traffic island malls which have gotten smaller over the years. By the 1910s this allowed for glamorous apartment buildings to rise, the homes of a new wealthy elite attracted to apartment living in the post-Gilded Age era. But that lifestyle was not quite made available to everyone. In this episode, Greg and Tom take you on a tour of the tunnels and viaducts that helped New York City to grow, creating billions of dollars of real estate in the process. FURTHER LISTENINGListen to these related Bowery Boys episodes after you're done listening to the Park Avenue show:The Pan Am BuildingIt Happened In Madison Square Park The Chrysler Building and the Great Skyscraper RaceThe Rescue of Grand Central Terminal FURTHER READINGThis week we're suggesting a few historic designation reports for you history supergeeks looking for a deep dive into Park Avenue history. Teresa Magaña is a Chicago-based self-taught artist and co-founder of Pilsen Arts & Community House. Though Magaña became an artist later in life, she feels inspired by her profound connection to her roots and Chicana heritage. Magaña grew up in Pilsen, and prides herself on the culture that has accepted and celebrated her. In Mexican culture, the life and death cycle is heavily accepted and celebrated; Magaña feels inspired by these ideals and Dia de los Muertos themes and motifs to create her style of art. Line work, swirls, curls and pinstripes evolved into her style, reminiscent of Chicago's sign painters. At Pilsen Arts & Community House, Magaña creates a space for local artists, offering exhibitions, classes and workshops. The space is intended for the Chicago community (and beyond) to engage in creative expression and represent the true voice of the neighborhood. Through Magaña's work, she hopes to uplift others and bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary art. This is what her Chicago sounds like. Nicholas Tiliacos, the owner of Marietta's Come-N-Get-It restaurant, has been charged with sexual assault against two employees, arrest warrants show. Both Cobb and Marietta police charged Tiliacos with multiple counts of sexual battery and cruelty to children against two individuals who worked at the restaurant. The alleged victims were underage at the time, per the warrants. The incidents allegedly occurred over the course of two years from 2020 to 2022, both at the restaurant and at Tiliacos' home in east Cobb. Tiliacos is accused by one victim of groping them multiple times over the two-year period without their consent. Similar allegations of groping were made by a second victim, who also alleged the incidents took place at both the restaurant and Tiliacos' home. It was unclear if the two alleged victims still worked at the restaurant. Joel Pugh, Tiliacos' attorney, declined to comment on the case. Tiliacos is out on a $60,000 bond after he was charged in October. He has yet to be indicted and his case is pending, per the Cobb District Attorney's office. More than two months after voters cast ballots to create a new city of Mableton, hundreds of residents turned out to continue the fight against cityhood with a single-minded purpose. They want out. A standing-room-only audience of hundreds packed the Cobb County Police Academy on Wednesday night, demanding an exit ramp from the first Cobb city to be incorporated in more than 100 years. Some said they'd never known they were in the city limits until they showed up to vote. Others, like Donna Georgiana, had simply assumed the proposal would fail like its counterparts in East Cobb, Lost Mountain, and Vinings — until it didn't. Georgiana told the MDJ she wasn't mixed up in the debate before the election, because “I really never thought it would pass, ever.” Through the town hall, pacing the stage was state Representative David Wilkerson of Powder Springs, who derided the 78,000-strong Mableton as “the largest H.O.A. in Cobb County.” Wilkerson has emerged as one of Mableton's fiercest critics since the city's referendum passed in November with 53% of the vote. Highlighting what he called “open questions” that remain after the referendum, he plans to introduce legislation this year to de-annex from the new city several precincts that voted “no” in the referendum. But the loudest voices Wednesday came from the audience, who wanted above all the answer to this question: what can we do? Wilkerson said for now, their best bet is with lawmakers under the Gold Dome. But the key, he said, will be persuading the entire Cobb County Legislative Delegation to get on board with the proposal, and he encouraged attendees to lobby their representatives hard in the coming months. Options on the table could include a “surgical” de-annexation of areas that voted against cityhood (predominantly in the city's northeast), or a do-over of the election entirely. That latter option got some of the most spirited cheers of the night. But state Representative Sharon Cooper,  of east Cobb, told the MDJ Thursday that lawmakers will likely want to hear from both sides of the issue before jumping to a legislative fix Walker did not have to look far to find its new football coach, promoting T.J. Anderson to lead the Wolverines' program. Anderson has been at Walker for two years as associate head coach and offensive coordinator. Anderson has experience at all levels of football. A graduate of South Gwinnett High School, he was a running back at Georgia Southern and was part of the Eagles' 2000 national championship in what was then NCAA's Division I-AA. He also won three Southern Conference championships under coaches Paul Johnson and Mike Sewak. Anderson, who also played in the Arena Football League for two years, returned to Georgia Southern in 2018 to served as the director of high school relations under then-coach Chad Lunsford. He also has experience in high school as an assistant coach at Westminster, Mountain View and Etowah. Anderson succeeds interim coach Tom Evangelista and becomes the fifth head coach since the beginning of the 2020 season. During that time, Walker has gone 3-25. No longer science fiction, the use of artificial intelligence to recognize and match faces to public images harvested from the internet is a reality the Cobb County Police Department wants people to understand and support. Members of Cobb police spent two hours discussing the use of facial recognition technology and their new contract with Clearview AI, hoping to alleviate concerns and inform the 25 residents gathered for the District 3 town hall meeting Wednesday night at the Tim Lee Senior Center  Cobb Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer said the technology is secure and would only be used by law enforcement in a limited capacity, likening it to receiving an anonymous tip. The majority of the questions asked by the public dealt with fears of living in a surveillance state. It was mainly up to Cobb Police Captain Darin Hull of the Violent Crime Bureau to make the case for using the technology in a safe, secure manner to rapidly apprehend suspects. Hull repeatedly emphasized how the technology would not be abused and how “guardrails" would be in place. The 150-year-old covered bridge on Concord Road in Smyrna has been reopened after it was once again hit by a vehicle and closed for repairs. Cobb DOT was repairing the protective beam of the bridge Friday morning, according to the county.   "Concord Road has been reopened to (hopefully height appropriate) traffic," the county said on its Twitter. "The bridge is fine." The historic covered bridge has been the site of crashes and closures that have grown too numerous to count, the most recent occurring in December. The bridge's low clearance, indicated by abundant signage around the bridge, is the cause of most of the accidents. The bridge was built in 1872 and is the county's only remaining covered bridge still in use. In 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Officials symbolically shoveled dirt downtown on Thursday afternoon to mark the start of a new, $6 million amphitheater at Depot Park. Construction will begin February 1 and is scheduled to last 12 months. Kennesaw staff said that timeline is subject to adjustment, if the project is hampered by weather or supply chain issues. Once complete, the amphitheater will hold between 1,500 and 2,000 people, according to City Manager Jeff Drobney. The design calls for a 50-foot by 42-foot stage, with turf grass terraces fanning out from there. The project also includes new restrooms and storage space, and the renovation of the Community House. The amphitheater will cap off a long-running, eight-phase master plan for the park, which now boasts a playground, open play field, walking trail, picnic tables and benches. Construction of Depot Park was funded by successive rounds of 1% special purpose local option sales tax dollars. The amphitheater will be funded by the 2022 round of SPLOST, which began collecting revenue last January and will run through the end of 2027. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com      See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The third and final part of the Bowery Boys Road Trip to Long Island -- the gay history of Fire Island! Fire Island is one of New York state’s most attractive summer getaways, a thin barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean lined with seaside villages and hamlets, linked by boardwalks, sandy beaches, natural dunes and water taxis. (And, for the most part, no automobiles.) But Fire Island has a very special place in American LGBT history. It is the site of one of the oldest gay and lesbian communities in the United States, situated within two neighboring hamlets -- Cherry Grove and the Fire Island Pines. During the 1930s actors, writers and craftspeople from the New York theatrical world began heading to Cherry Grove, its remote and rustic qualities allowing for gay and lesbians to express themselves freely -- far away from a world that rejected and persecuted them.  Performers at the Grove's Community House and Theater helped define camp culture, paving the way for the modern drag scene. In this episode, Greg and Tom head to Cherry Grove -- and the Community House and Theater -- to get a closer look at Fire Island's unique role in the American LGBT experience. And they are joined by Parker Sargent, a documentary filmmaker and one of the curators of Safe Haven: Gay Life in 1950s Cherry Grove, a new exhibition at the New-York Historical Society, highlighting photography from the collection of the Cherry Grove Archives Collection. FEATURING: The Great Hurricane of 1938! The Invasion of the Pines! The indescribable Belvedere! And the surprising origin of Fire Island's name. boweryboyshistory.com   Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/boweryboys See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

050 Betti Lose–VITA Tax Prep Joyfully Serving the Community—St. Luke’s Community House Community volunteer, Betti Lose, enjoys a variety of opportunities at St. Luke’s Community House to help the many people served by that organization. In the course of a few weeks, she might do administrative tasks, schedule free Volunteer Income Tax Preparation (VITA) sessions, assist a senior citizen playing bingo, or shelve books in the large and inviting preschool library. St. Luke’s mission is both to help low-income families, seniors, and individuals in West Nashville achieve their potential and to prevent problems that threaten the stability of families and community. The organization works on that mission every day, but January through April they specifically accomplish it by providing free income tax preparation for Nashville area residents with incomes of $64,000 or less. Trained volunteers prepare taxes at no cost to the taxpayer. Refunds are electronically deposited into the client’s bank account. These volunteers work with clients by appointment. Betti schedules those appointments. More information about this vital VITA program is available at their website www.stlch.org. For more details, call St. Luke’s front office at 615-350-7893. The Philanthropy Episode – A Holiday Double Feature A CEO’s Virtual Mentor® Episode 14 Holiday greetings from The Leadership Lyceum!  Welcome to our 14th episode of the podcast. ‘Tis the season of giving and we give you our holiday gift in the form of this holiday special double episode on Philanthropy.  We’ll cover the subject from a few different angles. First. from the perspective of the giver – with our first guest, University of Chicago benefactor Bernard DelGiorno.  Bernie also advises his clients on charitable giving in his role in private wealth management at UBS. Next, from the angle of the recipient.  We’ll glean the perspectives of Jennifer Sampson, CEO of The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.  Jennifer led a remarkable turnaround in Dallas and has led the development of programs that fund impactful and innovative social entrepreneurship.  Finally, we introduce you to a group of public company CEO’s in Ohio that are leveraging their musical talents to raise money for charities in Ohio.  Two of the CEOs that we feature have the ultra-cool distinction of being board members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  We feature the music of the CEO band, Power Chords throughout the music interludes in the program.  Segment I: Bernard DelGiorno, University of Chicago benefactor Segment II: Jennifer Sampson, CEO of the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Segment III: The Ohio CEO band for charity - The Power Chords.  Perhaps it is not widely known that there is a group of several CEOs in Ohio have given their musical talent and time to charitable fundraising events.  One band that raises money for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame includes three of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame board members: Drums: Nick Akins, CEO of utility AEP in Columbus; Guitars, vocals and keyboards: George Barrett, CEO of Cardinal Health; Guitars: Dr. Michael Drake, President of The Ohio State University and; Bass: Greg Harris, President of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Another band, The Power Chords, includes Akins and Barrett, plus multi-instrument virtuoso and vocalist Joe Hamrock, the CEO of utility NiSource.  Segment III is my coverage of The Power Chords at their Thursday, September 28th evening gig fundraiser for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank in Grove City, Ohio, outside Columbus. Conclusion  We hope you enjoyed this holiday season episode of A CEO’s Virtual Mentor and the fitting subject of Philanthropy from its many different angles.  It’s clear across all of these segments the devotion of our guests to something larger than themselves.  Famous Last Words We close our episode in Lyceum tradition with Famous Last Words.  It’s December 24, 1941.  Christmas Eve.  Just 17 days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  President Franklin D. Roosevelt lights the White House Christmas tree and is joined in this, his 9th ceremonial act (pre-presidential term-limits) by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who was in Washington for the Arcadia Conference, the first wartime conference between these two close allies since the US entrance into World War II just 16 days prior on December 8th. Try as I might to edit this down for our 21st Century attention spans and our improved discourse efficiency at between 140 to 280 characters, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance, I lacked the courage to cut.  Use a bookmark, because it’s well worth a listen.  On this day, 76 years ago, two of the 20th century’s most monumental figures took the stage with two purposes.  On the surface, they took to the microphone to announce the lighting of a tree.  But in their soaring speeches, they made clear the principles for which they had now committed both of their nations.  The overtones and undertones are thought-provoking and revealing for our current state of sensibility.  Warm wishes for the holidays and for your resolve for the New Year. Thanks for joining us.  We can’t improve without your feedback – write us through our website www.LeadershipLyceum.com and subscribe on iTunes.  See you next time. On any given day, she might do administrative tasks, schedule free VITA income tax preparation, assist a senior citizen playing bingo, or shelve books in the wonderful preschool library. Betti says, “I’m embarrassed to be honored for doing something I love doing. My heart is so filled—I haven’t words to describe how I feel.” St. Luke’s mission is both to help low-income families, seniors, and other individuals in West Nashville achieve their potential and to prevent problems that threaten the stability of families and community, such as food insecurity.
