Reflect Forward
The Power of Strategic Foresight with Donna DuPont

Reflect Forward

Strategic foresight is the visionary practice of anticipating what's ahead—so you can make bold, future-shaping decisions today that turn uncertainty into opportunity. In this week's episode of Reflect Forward, I sit down with futurist and designer Donna DuPont, founder and chief strategist at Purple Compass, to discuss how to anticipate the future and make better decisions. Donna's work is all about helping organizations embrace the power of strategic foresight—not the crystal ball kind, but the kind that empowers leaders to make bold, intelligent decisions today that position their organizations for tomorrow. Donna shares how foresight allows leaders to improve their relationship with uncertainty and confidently navigate disruption. She breaks down the difference between forecasting and foresight, explains how to develop anticipatory thinking skills, and offers actionable advice for integrating a culture of foresight into your team and company. I also share my own journey of applying foresight to lead StoneAge through strategic shifts, innovation challenges, and industry disruption. From creating a "what the future looks like" document in 2018 to guiding bold strategic moves, I've seen firsthand how powerful future-priming and pattern recognition can be. This episode is full of practical wisdom, thought-provoking insights, and a whole lot of energy around why developing future-ready leadership is more important than ever. What You'll Learn in This Episode: • What strategic foresight really is—and what it's not • How to practice foresight through horizon scanning and scenario planning • Why courage and vulnerability are key in navigating uncertainty • How confirmation bias derails smart strategy (and how to overcome it) • What you can do today to start building a future-proof culture in your organization Key Takeaways: 1. Foresight isn't about predicting the future—it's about understanding emerging patterns and making empowered decisions. 2. You don't need to overhaul everything. Start small. Choose a product, problem, or strategic focus area and test out anticipatory thinking there. 3. Innovation is messy, and that's okay. Courage, not perfection, leads to breakthrough moments. 4. Challenge your assumptions. Just because you think it doesn't make it true. 5. Hope is a mindset. Leaders who stay curious, connected, and optimistic are best positioned to create a better future. About Donna DuPont: Donna is a professional futurist and founder of Purple Compass, a consultancy that helps leaders and organizations develop future-readiness through foresight practices. She recently launched the Future Intelligence Lab and The Future Minds Coaching Collective—a free, monthly coaching experience for anyone looking to deepen their foresight skills. You can learn more at purplecompass.ca. Let's Reflect Forward: Donna's insight reminds us that the ability to reflect on past experiences and bring those lessons forward into the future is a powerful leadership skill. As she puts it, "Each experience allows us to learn something new about ourselves… and shape a personal future that opens up new opportunity." Instead of predicting trends or following hype cycles, future archaeologist Markus Iofcea uncovers artifacts - fragments of possible futures - that help us rethink what's to come.Future archaeologist, co-author of the book Zurück zur Zukunft, and all-round inspiring mind, Markus Iofcea, is here to tell us that yes, the future can be ours to create! “Because It's grounded on a very simple principle. Story, well told, well crafted, well structured, will have a pattern of ebb and flow. The ebb is where the tension builds up, and the flow is where it releases.”-- Leon Conrad In this episode of How to Write The Future podcast, host, Beth Barany talks to award winning author and tutor Leon Conrad where they discuss story structure, storytelling techniques, and how to map story structure for individual characters.ABOUT LEON CONRADLeon Conrad grew up among the souks and bazaars of Egypt. Early encounters with storytelling from a living 'Arabian Nights'-type oral tradition started him on a life-long quest to explore the unique power the human voice has to inspire. A talented pianist and linguist, he studied music in London, UK, working with opera singers and musical theatre performers. He studied storytelling with Shonaleigh Cumbers, a Jewish storyteller from a living oral tradition. As an author, his ground-breaking book 'Story and Structure: A complete guide' has won several literary awards including the IPNE Nonfiction Book of the Year and was shortlisted for The People's Book Prize. Leon set up The Unknown Storyteller Project in 2018 to help writers use story structure techniques to craft tighter stories and to spot and fix plot holes more effectively. As a tutor, he works with gifted and talented students age 7+ , helping many to publish their work independently and traditionally. The US' President-elect inherits a world different from that in his first term. Synopsis: The Straits Times' global contributor Nirmal Ghosh shines a light on Asian perspectives of global and Asian issues with expert guests. Tariffs - as a weapon to restore and rejuvenate American jobs and manufacturing -  will be back with a vengeance in Donald Trump's second term. So will competition with China, in the course of which performative support for Taiwan by hawks in Congress and Washington DC security circles may end up provoking Beijing and thus hurting Taiwan.   Yet the US' 47th President will inherit a world different from that of his first term in 2017 - one with more limits to American power. While some hawks in Washington see China as weak and advocate that the US should do everything it can to push it over the edge, realists understand the US can no longer do everything.  From the perspective of South-east Asia, it is imperative to defuse the zero-sum mentality of US-China competition. Faced with the disruptive effects of tariffs, this  region has to also find ways to go back to a kind of globalisation that works for everyone.  These are some of the challenges, and currents, that the next American President and the US' trade partners and allies must navigate and adapt to, as a new era looms in Washington DC.  In this episode of Asian Insider, Nirmal hosts Danny Quah, Professor of Economics and Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, and Robert Manning, Distinguished Fellow at the Stimson Center in Washington, DC, who is working on the think tank's Strategic Foresight and China programmes. They share their perspectives from opposite sides of the world, on the foreign policy of the Donald Trump 2.0 Administration.  Highlights (click/tap above):  2:51 Defusing the zero-sum game; what is Trump's idea of a bilateral trade deficit? 6:47 Trump inheriting a very different world now in his second term 13:17 Is there a kind of globalisation that can work for everyone? 16:34 Why Donald Trump is not shy to exercise hard power  18:02 China weak? Why the US can't do everything anymore 23:54 What makes Trump so tricky to work with? As American troubadour Bob Dylan said, “The times they are a changin'.” I'm recording this one week after the 2024 presidential election. Without delving into the specifics of any particular outcome, one thing that is clear is there are going to be some major changes. Change can produce a lot of anxiety and uncertainty, even when there are positive changes taking place. It can feel overwhelming, especially when we lose a sense of control over the future. In reality, there is very little that is in our control. There is a saying that we can't control people, places, and things. I can only control my reaction to these things, and take the action that I can. But what action to take? What can and should a person do when the options of action feel limited? To discuss these topics, we have Donna Dupont. Donna is the Founder and Chief Strategist in Foresight & Design for Purple Compass. Donna has a Master of Design in Strategic Foresight and Innovation, which she has applied in healthcare, environment and sustainability, and generally helping organizations think about and plan for the future. Donna and I talk about:the process of future and foresight planning, why it is important to maintain a sense of agency during times of massive changethe place and importance of emotion as part of our planning, why doing future planning can sometimes feel like therapy, andwe talk about how the foresight planning process is a vital part of designing positive futures.Purple Compass https://www.purplecompass.ca/Donna Dupont https://www.linkedin.com/in/donna-dupont/

Dr. Brandy Baxter | Ph.d | Financial Coach | Financial Futurist Summary: Dr. Brandy Baxter's journey into financial coaching started with an unlikely spark: The Three Little Pigs. This childhood tale inspired her to help women build financial confidence and resilience, much like the pigs who learned to build a stronger house. Her book, rooted in the idea of taking control of your financial future, dives deep into how the right support can transform not just your bank balance, but your entire mindset about money. Dr. Baxter offers a fresh take, emphasizing that it's not just about having a plan—it's about finding the confidence to act on it. She talks about the power of coaching in creating lasting change, but what really makes her approach different? It might have something to do with the way she helps people connect emotionally to their financial goals, turning intimidating tasks into meaningful steps forward. Dr. Baxter's story raises the question: What if your financial journey could be about more than numbers—about building something resilient like those three little pigs learned to do? BIO:Brandy is the Owner and Founder of Envison30 where she coaches couples to shift their mindset and bring future financial goals into present reality. Brandy is an Accredited Financial Counselor®, a Financial Fitness Coach®, has a B.A. in Communication, a M.S. in Management, a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate degree in Strategic Foresight. She is the author of the book, The Three Little Divas™ Reach Your Money Goals in 3 Steps Before You Huff and Puff and Blow Your Next Paycheck Away, a book about three women and their money personalities. Highlights: Financial coaching helps individuals gain confidence in managing their finances and take action. Coaching focuses on implementation and helping clients make decisions that align with their values. Financial coaching creates a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their thoughts and feelings about money. Empathy and forgiveness are essential in the coaching process to support clients in their financial journey. Financial coaching should be a partnership, with the client as the expert in their own life. Visualization exercises can help clients connect emotionally with their goals. Support and accountability are crucial for implementing sustainable changes. Hold money loosely and use it as a tool to add fulfillment to life. Quotes: "Coaching allows clients to uncover for themselves what is best for themselves." "It's less about what I think and more about what you know."
