On today's episode: In the days of old (and yes, we do mean old), the only way to get your hands on a video game early was to play at one of several kiosks at Walmart, K-Mart, or Target OR purchase a video game magazine that had a demo disk attached to it. Now with both the demo disk gone and the majority of kiosks all but history, the industry has found new ways to adapt to bring early peeks at games into your home. Open betas and closed alphas are ripe for signing up, enticing hundreds of thousands to sign up and play an early build of a game to help devs figure out what to fix or tune before launch. But what if there was another way that gave players full access in advance? A way where you could purchase the game and play it as it was being developed? Say hello to Early Access - a way for devs (both big and small) to open up their game to the masses when it's mostly playable. There have been many successes and failures that have made waves, but it's not all sunshine and roses. So let's talk about what happened then, and what's going on now with Early Access. #Arcade #BandaiNamco #Arcade1Up In this week's episode of Discuss, we take a look at the resurgence of a beloved form of video game entertainment and what its revival means for gamers and non-gamers alike. I'm of course talking about the Arcade! While the Arcades in the US had begun to drift into the murky depths that imprison Blockbuster and Radio Shack, it doesn't mean they went away for good. The home console space and its adoption of online play made for a more enticing experience than leaving the house with a pocket full of quarters. Many local arcades began to close up shop and resell their cabinets to collectors or to other arcades that needed replacements for their own broken cabinets. As the waves of nostalgia took over many people's imaginations and motivations, we started to see a change in the arcade market. Cabinets became even more expensive to purchase, so for one to play arcade classics it became a slight challenge. However, the idea to make your own using nothing more than a cheap $35 PC took off and soon everyone who wanted an arcade of their own in their own home could make it happen. And the industry took notice. Companies now sell build-it-yourself flat pack arcade cabinets, and adoption of new arcade titles and ideas brought both old and new back into the floors of the arcades we knew and loved. On today's episode: We aren't strangers to the world of VR. TV and movies have taken us to places in virtual reality that truly seem like a world within a world - a world free from restrictions where you could do anything you want in the virtual space. And of course games aren't new to VR, either. Gaming juggernauts of the 90s made attempts to capitalize on virtual reality during the 16 & 32-bit eras, offering unique takes to bring VR to the masses. However, for some, it wasn't the right time or the right level of technology and VR took a back seat. With the lessons learned from days past, and a rather successful crowdfunding campaign in 2012 that set the rules for VR gaming, the surge in adoption and support is showing that VR isn't going anywhere. How does VR look compared to the 90s, what are some of the concerns we should be focused on, and what's next for the tech! This week, We are VR! On today's episode: The allure of cosmetics, boosts, and customizations have always been a way to hold onto a gamers attention hoping for that one drop. That one rare skin that makes you look like Darth Vader, or maybe the butterfly knife that displays the logo of your favorite eSports team - there's always a hook to keep you playing those games. But the C-suite executives in these gaming companies knew that gamers were eager for faster progression, or for the quick fix of a particular drop, so they capitalized on it and embraced the microtransaction model. Games that you wouldn't expect to take advantage of this path are now shifting gears, and popular franchises have moved into the profitable, and sometimes predatory, space. On today's episode: Let's make this as easy as possible: nostalgia and retro are everywhere! From the rise of the Pop Vinyls covering each category known to entertainment, to T-Shirts sporting logos and designs from a bygone era, and even some forms of entertainment from our childhoods being made available for us to relive the days of yore. This happens to include video games, of course! A portable version of Oregon Trail that lets you get dysentery on the go, Atari and Intellivision making new consoles, and Nintendo going against Sega and Sony to deliver a mini version of their hit 90's consoles to your living room. That's a small taste of it, but you get the picture. Our need for retro content has become a pretty sizeable part of the video game industry, and of course there's a lot to dissect about it. #XboxGamePass #PlayStationPlus #Streaming On today's episode: The days of handhelds have come and gone, thanks to the success of the Nintendo Switch and its hybrid console approach, as well as the deluge of smartphones that grace nearly everyone's pockets. With handhelds now a thing of the past AND we can all be sure that the present console shortage isn't helping in any way, developers and publishers alike are looking for more ways to get their games into people's hands. In comes the internet to save the day once again! Kinda… Game and nongame companies alike are bringing their own solution to the market, letting you play triple-A titles on your phone or mobile device while offloading the entire process to a server in a far-off datacenter… for a monthly fee. On today's episode: Remember when you bought a PC game in the 90s, and to fully install the game you needed to input a 16-character code? Ahh, to be in a time like that again. However, in our effort to access games faster, developers did away with pre-packaged codes and either made it so the access was embedded into the disk, was a part of the computer or console… or stood up a server that the game needed to talk with. As fears of digital piracy continued to grow with internet access expanding and evolving, developers and publishers needed to come up with a better way to protect their IP. But steps to protect that which they hold dear comes at the expense of downtime, performance issues, and more for the end user - the gamer. On today's episode: The open world genre - a mainstay and staple of modern video games that lets you take more control of your experience than the tried and true linear progression system. Our ability to explore is only hampered by the enemies and mobs that litter the different regions, and whether we're brave (or high level enough) to push through the chaos. While a majority of open world games provide a rather enjoyable experience, there are some that seem to cross into the repetitive and frustrating: Save this outpost, and this outpost, and that outpost; run materials from this person to this group and that group, and return with the money; Protect this set of travelers going this way, and a group of adventurers going the other. A lot of open world games follow the same moniker, and it seems some open world games can't stop copying and pasting from each other. On today's episode: It seems like only yesterday that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds launched, and with it a wave - nay, a tsunami - of change that is still with us to this day. 100 players depart from a cargo plane, hover bus, drop ship, helicopter, or some other type of flying object and split across a massive map in hopes of finding the right weapons and gear and making it to the center of the zone before they die or succumb to the wall. However, in those 5 years since PUBG's release, player expectations for Battle Royale modes have shifted, and some players leverage a multiplayer game's success against the inclusion of a Battle Royale. Some devs even consider this expectation as they see player counts drop, and retention skews into the red, meaning a post-content change to include a Battle Royale ends up becoming a make or break event. But is this the right way to go, or is this more of a grasping-for-straws scenario to maintain interest in a game? Let's get into it with today's episode: The Battle Royale Dilemma. On today's episode: We're not shy to admit that we've given our fair share of criticism about games in past episodes. When a feature, modification, or change is promised -or- implemented in a well known game series, and it changes the core experience, we're there to talk about it and what its potential impact might mean for the game - and games like it - going forward. However, as games continue to age and new games come out, the fans of the series look to the devs for more content, more updates, and at the overall health of the game. This can lead to some massive speculation about the state of a game given access to player counts, product roadmaps, and competition. Voices begin to echo about how a game is fairing, and give rise to the clickbait articles and videos about a game being “dead.” What has this type of focus added to the overall discussion on games, and how do we best move forward on approaching these topics? On today's episode: The video game industry hasn't been shy to embracing controversy in their video games. In 1976, developer Exidy stoked fears from the media with their arcade game, Death Race, and its portrayal of violence against enemies in it's virtual world. Midway Games took it to another level with it's fatalities in Mortal Kombat in 1993 - so much so, that it spawned the ESRB. As graphical and compute power has increased greatly since those games came out, so has the potential to stir even more controversy - increased violence, sexual representation (over-sexualization), controversy for the sake of controversy. If we say the words "No Russian" or "White phosphorus," we're sure for many of you listening you know what we are directly referring to. On today's episode: Handheld gaming was originally dominated by a select few. The likes of Nintendo's Game Boy and it's offspring, the Nintendo DS, were the rulers of the gaming-on-the-go scene. Competition from Sony with it's PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita, Sega with the Game Gear, and many others could not keep pace with the house of Mario. However, Nintendo's attempt to bridge the gap between handheld and home console became an overnight success, and the Switch continues to be a best seller since it's release in 2017. That got many others thinking of what they could provide in lieu of a Game Boy-style device - either stick with the ability to provide retro gaming in place of what Nintendo had previously done -or- take the ever-expanding PC gaming market and make it even more accessible in an on-the-go package. Access to classic video game consoles isn't necessarily hard, but the upkeep of so many different consoles as well as the cost of those consoles and games can be taxing. To solve this, many gamers have turned to emulating those consoles and downloading ROM files of the games they so dearly want to play. However, while the possibility of having every single classic console from the Atari 2600 through the Wii on a single device is there, it doesn't mean that it's legal. If you don't already own the game, then congrats: you have entered the world of piracy. But there is a movement in the video game world to preserve these games via emulation and do it in a legal fashion. But what does emulation actually look like now, and what does it's future hold. On today's episode: Electronic waste has become one of the most problematic forms of pollution in the world, with the Americas accounting for 13.1 metric tonnes of e-waste in 2019. The main driver for e-waste generation is the speed at which devices become obsolete, or which a new device surpasses it's predecessor and drives home new value that the previous model didn't. In the world of video games, this is also a serious concern. Attempting to repair your own failed device can be costly and potentially dangerous without some kind of direction or guidance on how to perform the repair. On today's episode: What do the Xbox Series consoles, the PS5, and the last generations of consoles all have in common? It's not cross play, and it sure isn't the exclusive count - but the chips and silicon inside the consoles themselves. On today's episode: One of the key selling points for the Xbox Series consoles and the PlayStation 5 was the ability to purchase a game once and play that title on both the new console and it's last generation counterpart. With limited console supply, this allowed gamers to purchase a title and potentially allow for them to play it in it's next gen format without paying for another of the same game. The barriers for those wanting to purchase or even build their own gaming PC have been torn down, and outside of current component prices, is a much simpler task to accomplish nowadays. For those who prefer to play PC games comes the hope to take those games on the go without having to either pack up a whole desktop OR spend more money on a dedicated gaming laptop. Device makers now see the opportunity to launch portable products that give players the freedom to play PC games without the burdens previously listed. But what does that mean for PC gaming going forward? That's what we talk about in today's episode: PC Gaming on the Go! On today's episode: Cheating has been a part of gaming history for a long time. From the days of yore with GameShark attachments for the PS1, Cheat Code Central providing you the button presses to unlock all weapons, and the infamous rosebud cheat in the Sims to add money to your account, it's a part of normal business. But what about the darker side of cheating, not to mention hacking? Aim bots, wall hacks, exploited glitches... these are terms that have become a part of the cheating lexicon. What does cheating and hacking look like now compared to the old days, and what does it look like going forward including the methods to prevent it. We talk about that in this week's episode: Cheating & Hacking Check us out on Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pg/TheNPCsPodcast Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/thenpcspodcast Intro & Outro: Run by J+1 Pick up his tracks on Bandcamp today @ https://jplusone.bandcamp.com/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-npcs-podcast/support

On today's episode: Are the chances for standalone, single release titles starting to become a thing of the past? It sure seems to be that way. Games that release once but continue through many years of content updates and "seasons" are becoming more of the norm. MMO's have been notorious for this for some time, but titles such as Fortnite, Warframe, and Destiny have taken the same approach and been successes in their own right. We ask the question again: Are the chances for standalone, single release titles starting to become a thing of the past? We look into that exact question with today's topic: Live Service Games. On today's episode: video games as we know them have been around for nearly 50 years, with the release of the Magnavox Odyssey in September of 1972. Over time the industry grew, crashed, revived, and re-grew, and we have experienced 9 generations of consoles and games with memories and experiences tied to each. But to experience those classics in their original form this day and age has become a challenge, as the efforts to maintain a large swath of titles including those with now-defunct online services increases with complexity each and every day. What does that mean for those working to collect and archive these games? Well, let's talk about it in this week's topic: Video Game Preservation. The NPCs - Video Game Commentary, Video Game News, And More!
In the video game days of yore, a player would be able to purchase a game from KB Toys or K-Mart and know they were getting a fully functioning and complete title. As the internet entered our homes and our consoles, games that were considered complete were found with game breaking bugs or missing content. And thus the Day 1 Patch was born. And to top it off, game companies felt the need to be sure we were always connected to the internet, even if a game may not look like it requires it. Couch co-op was relgated to party games, and game series that used to offer split screen now require two consoles to play. In this week's NPCs Discuss, we talk Online Only!
