Can AI make you better at Photoshop instead of replacing Photoshop? Sorg, Katie Dudas, and Dave Podnar explore that question on AwesomeCast 789 as Sorg shares a workflow for turning AI-generated concepts into editable graphics while keeping control of the final design. The crew also gets into Pittsburgh technology history with plans to preserve Westinghouse's Atom Smasher, the impressive Commercial Street Bridge replacement, and the accessibility origins of the modern audiobook. Then the geekery kicks into high gear: Xbox expands its classic-game preservation efforts to PC, Hasbro combines Transformers with Jem and the Holograms, LEGO brings Smart Play to Star Trek, Robosen releases an Optimus Prime robot designed to reopen childhood wounds, and Universal plans movies based on ten Atari properties. Plus, Chachi has gaming headlines involving Hasbro, Steam Deck and Atari, and the crew discusses the backlash surrounding a $58,000 humanoid robot proposed for use in a New York school district. It's Pittsburgh technology, AI creativity, retro gaming, accessibility, robots and pop-culture nostalgia on AwesomeCast 789.

Sony's reported plans to end physical disc production have reignited the debate over digital ownership, game preservation, rising prices, and what players actually own when they purchase a game. We discuss whether a digital-only PlayStation future is inevitable, what it could mean for collectors, and whether many longtime console players would finally move to PC. We also break down the approaching closure of the PS3 and PS Vita stores, Xbox's latest layoffs and studio restructuring, Obsidian's potential future with Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, and whether oversized AAA teams and layers of corporate management are making modern games more expensive and slower to develop. Plus, we discuss Palworld 1.0, Saros, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, the return of the PS3, the absurd price of retro CRT televisions, and whether any video game can truly be considered objectively good or bad. This episode, Brett, Austin, and Jason open with Soulframe, Digital Extremes' fantasy follow-up to Warframe — a game that's rough in the first few hours and genuinely unlike anything else once its combat and story systems click. With TennoCon 2026 just wrapped, they cover what's coming next for the game, including mounts, a new Fable, and a surprisingly candid comment from the dev team about building in public. From there, the conversation shifts to Gothic 1 Remake, a faithful rebuild of the 2001 cult classic that refused to modernize the one thing everyone expected it to: the total lack of hand-holding. Austin makes the case for why that trial-by-fire design is exactly what makes it special. The back half of the episode gets more pointed. Sony's announcement that it's phasing out physical PlayStation discs by 2028 sparked real backlash — and Brett, Austin, and Jason break down why the "everyone already prefers digital" argument doesn't hold up, using Sony's own PS3/Vita store closures and GOG's ownership model as the clearest counter-evidence. They close with Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, a genuinely well-built remake undercut by a storefront that's easier to reach than the save menu — and ask the bigger question: does backlash over monetization actually cost publishers anything when the sales numbers say otherwise? Whether you've got two hours a week or twenty, this episode is about time-value: what's actually worth your attention right now, and what's just noise dressed up as news. Send us Fan MailSony's decision to end physical PlayStation game releases in 2028 is sending shockwaves through the gaming industry—and retailers are beginning to fight back. Video Games Plus has published an open letter urging Xbox to make physical media part of Project Helix, giving Microsoft a rare opportunity to reverse the embarrassment of its 2013 Xbox One reveal and position itself as the console that still supports consumer choice. We also examine why European regulators say they cannot force Sony to continue manufacturing discs, how an all-digital PlayStation ecosystem could create new antitrust problems, and why eliminating physical games affects far more than collectors. Used-game pricing, lending, preservation, independent retailers and competition with the PlayStation Store could all disappear with the disc.Gaming Gone Wild features four unbelievable stories: a suspected burglar allegedly targeting two Santa Fe game stores, the tragic death of a Tennessee mother who traveled to meet someone connected through online gaming, a man arrested months after allegedly shooting his neighbor eight times following a stolen PlayStation 5 dispute, and 15 young people taken into custody after a social-media trend encouraged break-ins at Urban Air locations.Dude, I Got the Munchies includes Costco Mini Croissant Donuts, Blue Bell Chocolate Lava Cake Ice Cream, Dolly Parton Cookies 'N Custard desserts, the return of Ore-Ida Crispers, Pringles can-sized flavored hot dog buns and Reese's Pieces with a new chocolate-cookie center. Our Game of the Week is Ascend to ZERO, the fast-paced, time-bending action roguelike from Flyway Games and KRAFTON. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently talked about how Nintendo views preserving its history and connecting players with classic games through Nintendo Switch Online. With the Nintendo Museum now giving fans a physical way to experience Nintendo's past, and Switch Online continuing to expand with NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and now GameCube games on Switch 2, Nintendo seems focused on subscriptions as the main path forward for its classic library. Furukawa also said Nintendo wants to keep exploring a “variety of possibilities” when it comes to giving players access to games from the past. Tonight we're talking about what that actually means, whether Switch Online is enough, why fans still miss Virtual Console, and what Nintendo needs to do next to make its classic game strategy feel complete. In this episode, host Phil Salvador is joined by two digital preservationists, Ellen Cooper and Max Solensky, to explore the world of Japanese mobile game preservation. Before app stores existed, Japan was living in the future thanks to i-mode: a 1999 revolution that put the internet (and Capcom and Sega) right in your pocket.Today, these games are disappearing, and quickly. From brutal encryption to servers that no longer exist, saving this history is a high-tech race against time. We discuss the i-mode explosion and how Japan's feature phones beat the world to the web; why saving a mobile game is way harder than dumping a cartridge; the small community groups saving early iOS and Android gems from the digital void; and how you can help keep gaming history from being "delisted" forever. Mentioned in the show:Video of max swinging keyboard in the monkey game https://youtu.be/I1VJw_yYI1U?si=s_9nXIAZS2hwuNLC&t=355 Transforming phone: https://hitsave.org/wild-land/ You can listen to the Video Game History Hour every other Wednesday on Patreon (one day early at the $5 tier and above), on Spotify, or on our website.See more from Ellen Cooper “Unabandonware”:YouTube: youtube.com/@Unabandonware/featuredBluesky: @unabandonware.bsky.social TikTok: @unabandonwareSee more from Max Solensky “RockmanCosmo”:Bluesky: @rockmancosmo.bsky.socialX/Twitter: @RockmanCosmoWebsite: rockmancosmo.weebly.comWebsite: keitaiarchive.org Website: keitaiwiki.com/wiki/KeitaiWiki Video Game History Foundation:Email: podcast@gamehistory.orgWebsite: gamehistory.orgSupport us on Patreon: /gamehistoryorg

The VirtuaBoy re-release is one of those things where the more you look at it, the dumber it gets, but also if it brings someone a lot of joy to own: who am I to judge? I hope it DOES make someone out there deliriously happy. But all the games will be on the e-shop only, and only accessible via a subscription. And THAT is downright criminal. Because there will come a day when you lose access to that. Then, the VirtuaBoy becomes detritus that sits on your desk or in a closet. All of this to say the High Seas will be the only place to find these things and it'll be (insert company here)'s fault piracy makes the comeback it does.

IntroductionI kicked off the episode by greeting everyone and jumping right into the excitement and anticipation that's been building around the new device I've been covering. I wanted to address the delays head-on and reassure everyone that their patience would soon be rewarded.Distribution UpdateI shared an update on the distribution process, explaining that units are finally on their way to users. There's a unique twist in the assembly process designed to avoid detection by customs, which I found both clever and necessary given the circumstances.Addressing Skepticism and Conspiracy TheoriesAmidst some laughter and playful banter, I tackled the skepticism and conspiracy theories that have been swirling around. I made it clear that despite the rumors, the device is legitimate and functions as promised. The speculation about me being paid or having ulterior motives couldn't be further from the truth.Clarifying MisconceptionsI took a moment to clarify that I've not been compensated for my involvement with the device. My reviews and demonstrations have been all about showing its real capabilities, and I've faced quite a bit of scrutiny and disbelief. But I stand by my work and the authenticity of my content.Discussion on Delays and Distribution IssuesThe conversation then shifted to the delays in getting the devices out to users. I understand the frustration and disappointment these delays have caused. Despite these issues, I reassured my listeners that the device works as advertised, even though getting it into users' hands has been a challenge.Nintendo's Legal ActionsWe also touched on Nintendo's legal actions against the modding community and how it affects game preservation and accessibility. It's a complex issue, but one that's important to me and many in the community.Closing RemarksI wrapped up the episode by reiterating my commitment to honesty and transparency in my reviews. My role is to inform and demonstrate, not to be involved in the logistics or distribution of the device. I hope my coverage has been helpful and that it clears up any misconceptions about my involvement. This first-person summary captures the essence of the podcast episode from my perspective, focusing on the main topics I discussed. It was a mix of information, clarification, and a bit of humor, all aimed at providing insights and addressing the concerns surrounding the device.Support the show

About a year ago I was joined by Rockman Cosmo and Naoya Shinota to discuss their efforts in preserving Japanese feature phone games. Since so much time had passed I wanted to bring them back on the show to talk about how their efforts are going, the progress they made in a year and what their goals going forward are. It's been a long while since I had an informal chat on the show. Joining me on this episode is co-founder of Premium Edition Games Barry Carenza. We chat about what its like working as a game publisher, his thoughts on the state of video game preservation and we also dive a bit into our thoughts the habits of gamers and how they have evolved over the years. I really enjoyed this more laid back and chill chat so if you enjoyed this kind of thing and would like to see more of it let me know!
