S5 E1: Catherine Cavendish on Writing Gothic Horror “1941. In the dark days of war-torn London, Violet works in Churchill's subterranean top secret Cabinet War Rooms, where key decisions that will dictate Britain's conduct of the war are made. Above, the people of London go about their daily business as best they can, unaware of the life that teems beneath their feet. Night after night the bombs rain down, yet Violet has far more to fear than air raids. A mysterious man, a room only she can see, memories she can no longer trust, and a best friend who denies their shared past… Something or someone – is targeting her.” Catherine Cavendish, Dark Observation Welcome to Tea, Toast and Trivia. Thank you for listening in. I am your host, Rebecca Budd, and I am looking forward to sharing this moment with you. Join me as I travel virtually to the sea in Southport, England, to meet up with writer, Catherine Cavendish, who has given us paranormal, ghostly, and Gothic horror novels and novellas. Her novels include Dark Observation, In Darkness, Shadows Breathe, The Garden of Bewitchment. The Haunting of Henderson Close, The Devil's Serenade, The Pendle Curse, and Saving Grace Devine. Time to put the kettle on and add to this exciting conversation. As many of you know, Edinburgh feels like my second home. I just purchased Cat Cavendish's “The Haunting of Henderson Close.” This is the blurb: In the depths of Edinburgh, an evil presence is released. Hannah and her colleagues are tour guides who lead their visitors along the spooky, derelict Henderson Close, thrilling them with tales of spectres and murder. For Hannah it is her dream job, but not for long. Who is the mysterious figure that disappears around a corner? What is happening in the old print shop? And who is the little girl with no face? This is going to be an amazing read. I will keep the lights on. Thank you for joining Cat and me on Tea Toast & Trivia. And a very special thank you, Cat, for sharing your insights on writing, embracing the unknown and being open to possibilities. Listeners, I invite you to meet up with Cat on her website, Catherine Cavendish, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Goodreads. You are only an internet click away from being swept away on a haunting adventure. Until next time we meet, dear friends, safe travels wherever your journey leads you. Again, a bit of a delay, but we've got something to make it up for you: a big, sprawling episode of highly anticipated records and autistic analysis guaranteed to please all Terminators or your money back (please don't call me on this I can't give refunds on Patreon.) This time we're looking at two scrappy, unusual records descended from a parallel universe war metal scene that somehow drifted into our own- one from an established classic act, and another from youthful upstarts on a mission to make their mark. From the veterans in Ares Kingdom comes a record that refuses to rest on the laurels of the past. "In Darkness at Last" presents the band's resolute and powerful style of black/death/thrash metal in a looser, more jamming fashion that excites TDMG but may polarize longtime fans of the band. There's no shortage of crushing riffs and vigorous rhythmic stomping, but the atmosphere of this record is that of a long-defeated empire slowly slipping into memory. What's the goal, here? And has Ares Kingdom really been a black metal band all along? We discuss. Coming off last year's "Serpentine Descension," California-based Axis of Advance worshippers Galicia return with "Precipice," a debut record as exciting as it is inscrutable. The structural brilliance of Olde Edmonton combines with the sheer ferocity and pacing of mid-era Cryptopsy to create dizzyingly intense yet tremendously melodic music where riffs and rhythms slip past as quickly as they're introduced. This isn't easy listening, but those willing to take the time will likely discover one of the best records of the year. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:06:46 - Ares Kingdom - In Darkness at Last (Nuclear War Now) 1:03:00 - Interlude - Order from Chaos - “Forsake Me This Mortal Coil,” fr. DVD with Niyi Adekunle Sunday 15th August Different types of Life 7 If you have an exotic car packed in your garage, and you can't drive it, that car is useless to you until someone who knows how to drive comes along to drive it. Therefore Nothing is truly yours until you understand it. It is our understanding that gives us the ability to use and enjoy what we have. The Ethiopian eunuch while on his way to Ethiopia from Jerusalem, was reading the scriptures but he did not understand it. It took Philip the evangelist, who understood the scriptures to explain to him what he was reading. Until you fully understand something it is of no use to you Jesus while ministering with his disciples faced the little challenge of rejection from one of the cities he went to preach. Some of the apostles, asked him in Luke 9:53-55; let's see what it says. But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem. When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, “Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them. So they went on to another village. Jesus rebuked them because he was particular about them understanding the power and life that they were carrying inside them. The disciples knew that they had something inside them but they just didn't understand it, and because they didn't understand it, they will not be able to function properly in it. If we don't understand the life of God inside us, we cannot take advantage of it. Psalm 82:5 says "...they walk on in darkness..." A man who is ignorance of what he has will keep walking In Darkness. Psalm 49:20 (NKJV) A man who is in honor, yet does not understand, is like the beasts that perish. Many Christians who have the life of God in them don't know that they have honour; and because they don't know this, they don't desire to grow in this life. From the scripture above there is really no difference between them and animals. At most, they have become mere men. God want us to release the life of God he has invested in us so that he can fill the Earth. Scripture says the Earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God, as the waters cover the sea. This will only happen when we release the life of God inside us to flow out into the world. My prayer for you is that you take out time and study these words, and from there grow into maturity in the life of God. As you do this, life will open up to you and you will see that you are more than a mere man. God bless you and make his face to shine upon you in Jesus name enjoy your day.

Join us as we celebrate Haiti Heritage Month with Nick Lake. A first chapter reading of his award-winning book In Darkness. Based on actual events, In Darkness is a historical fiction about a boy trapped beneath the rubble of a ruined hospital In the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake: thirsty, terrified, and alone. 'Shorty' is a child of the slums, a teenage boy, who has seen enough violence to last a lifetime and who has been inexorably drawn into the world of the gangsters who rule Site Soleil: men who dole out money with one hand and death with the other. But Shorty has a secret, a flame of revenge that blazes inside him and a burning wish to find the twin sister he lost five years ago. He is marked. Marked in a way that links him with Toussaint L'Ouverture, the Haitian rebel, who two-hundred years ago led the slave revolt and faced down Napoleon to force the French out of Haiti.

After doing a foundation course Nat trained at Central Saint Martins in performance design. After graduating he worked for six years at Angels, but went freelance in 2005. Since then he has worked internationally with many talented people on projects ranging from the smallest short film to the biggest of US blockbusters. Nat believes very passionately that the details matter in costume and that even the smallest one can have a huge impact on the final look, he loves to get lost in his research and exploring and learning about the period of time he is working in. He has a great knowledge and interest in Youth Culture and has been fortunate to work on productions that have taken advantage of this passion such as This is England and Pirates.Nat has designed for productions including Babylon, In Darkness, Ashes to Ashes and the soon to be released Creation Stories and Pirates, his commitment and enthusiasm to costume and the craft is very apparent and it comes across in all his projects.

The Haunter of The Dark.

For Agnieszka Holland's third and final (she says) film about the Holocaust, she landed on a unique story that has shades of others before and after detailing gentiles saving Jews, but that's set in a very unique location – the sewers below the city. That meant a lot of dark scenes, but Holland didn't shy away from them. She worked with Jolanta Dylewska, her cinematographer, and together, they created a beautifully dark palette that feels authentic and not like The Third Man. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Agnieszka Holland series with her 2011 film In Darkness. We discuss the nature of Holocaust films and the nature of criticism when looking at stories that are so authentically real and horrible, but are also films. We look at the brilliant lead performance by Robert Wieckiewicz and why he works so well in the film. We chat about the nature of characters in this film and why Holland works so hard to allow her characters to challenge us with their flaws. And we discuss the design of the dark sewer locations, filming in them, and how to write music that works for the film. It's a powerful film, albeit a tough one, that has its issues but still works effectively. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in to this week's show!

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark has haunted children for decades in book form. But can the movie adaptation pack the same punch? Or is it as scary as a sad, lonely scarecrow? Directed by Andre Ovredal of The Audopsy of Jane Doe and Troll Hunter fame, and produced by little known Guillermo del Toro, Scary Stories creates quite a horror stew. Our weekly horror reviews are The Hole in the Ground, Satan's Triangle, The Sentinel, Sleepstalker, In Darkness, The Boys, Greener Pastures by Michael Wehunt, and The Switch House by Tim Meyer.

Understanding your own intentions is part of the journey to better mental health, but actor Natalie Dormer makes a habit of adding another entire character to the mix. In this funny and insightful chat with Fearne, she tells us what she does to get inside the head of the character she's playing - and what that can do to her own mind. On the way we discuss her roles in Game of Thrones, The Tudors and Picnic At Hanging Rock, as well as her own movie (which she co-wrote) In Darkness. Our sponsor for this episode was Fiit - to find out more about them head to https://fiit.tv/blogs/get-fiit-with-fearne/

We all want to take this chance to say, Welcome Back! to OMPS! Season 2 is finally here and we are excited to start it with John Powells score to Solo, A Star Wars Story. Before Brad, Kurt, and Alex get into that score they chat about the scores they have been listening to during the break. Kurt is still listening to Marco Beltramis A Quiet Place and Clint Mansells recent Hotel Artemis, while Alex has been listening to an older score (an awesome score!) for Stargate by David Arnold. Alex also brings up an excellent new score for Get Out by Michael Abels. Brad has been diving into some new scores for a while and brings up some interesting choices. One is an excellent score for an independent vampire exploitation movie called Live Evil by Austin Wintory (composer of video game soundtracks like Assassins Creed and Journey), along with new scores for In Darkness by Niall Byrne, and Tides of Fate by future-Captain Marvel composer, Pinar Toprak. All this before they start talking about one of the best scores of the year, Solo, A Star Wars Story. While the movie might not have done so well at the box office, it is undeniable that the score should sit as a champion accomplishment in the arena of film scores. Like John Debneys Cutthroat Island, John Powell has thrown every ounce of passion into this process and revealed that he has such a talent for creating memorable work, even when the film might not be successful. We are so glad you are back, and we are very excited to be back making episodes! We will be releasing episodes again every two weeks for Season 2, and promise a much bigger season than the last. Dont forget to leave a comment and let us know what you think. Thanks for dropping by and enjoy the show!

Welcome to the second podcast that’s dropping on day 10 of our coverage of the Edinburgh Film Festival.I’m joined by Anthony Bynre, the co-writer and director of a new thriller, called 'In Darkness'.
