He started blogging back in the early 2000's before anyone was really doing it. I personally have been following him for years. Here's some more info on Philip Bloom:Some of his most iconic work was created with Canon DSLRs. As one of the biggest evangelists for their use in productions his website became the place to go to for budding filmmakers as well as experienced ones keen to embrace the new technology. His site now regularly has over 1,000,000 visitors a month. His use of Canon DSLRs to shoot part of Lucasfilms’ last movie “Red Tails” proved a huge point to the naysayers. This technology was proved very viable in large-scale productions. He has become very well known for his in-depth video reviews of various cameras, which have helped many people in the huge decision of buying a camera. He has worked for all the major UK broadcasters, such as the BBC, ITV, C4 and Sky, as well as countless independent production companies and many others around the world including CNN, CBS, Discovery, FOX and NBC. Independent projects are key to Philip and he splits his time between bigger projects and small independent ones. One of his most successful independent projects was “How To Start A Revolution” which won a BAFTA in 2012 and was also awarded prizes at several film festivals including Best Documentary at the 2011 Raindance festival. Enjoy my conversation with Philip Bloom.

Today we have my uncut interview with Philip Bloom. There's a reason I like to call this show the "This American Life" for filmmakers. Bill Weir is the executive producer, writer and host of “The Wonder List with Bill Weir” an acclaimed CNN original series in search of people and places, cultures and creatures on the brink of seismic change. Debuting in March 2015, the first season took viewers from Venice to Vanuatu, from the Alps to the Everglades, telling unforgettable stories shot in lush, cinematic style by London filmmaker Philip Bloom. Weir joined CNN in November 2013 as anchor and reporter after a decade of distinctive broadcast journalism at ABC News. After helping to launch the weekend edition of “Good Morning America” in 2004, Weir became co-anchor of “Nightline” in 2010 while his reporting was featured on “World News with Diane Sawyer”, “Good Morning America”, “20/20”, and his own Yahoo! News digital series, “This Could Be Big”. In his network career, Weir journeyed to more than 50 nations and all 50 states, covering breaking news and uncovering global trends. He was among the first reporters into the floodwaters of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Japan's tsunami zone during the nuclear crisis of 2011. He dodged Taliban bullets in Afghanistan, led network coverage from Iraq and was the first American to broadcast live from Tibet. In 2012, he anchored ABC's Summer Olympics coverage from London and brought unprecedented reporting from inside Apple's Chinese factories. His live shots have come from atop the Golden Gate Bridge and below the waters of the Great Barrier Reef while his signature adventure reporting includes jumps from hot air balloons, hikes deep into the Amazon and one fun night spent lashed to the side of Yosemite's El Capitan. Before joining ABC News, Weir wrote and hosted projects for the FX and USA Networks and was an anchor/reporter in Los Angeles, Chicago, Green Bay and Austin, MN. He lives in New York with his wife, daughter and a four-pound dog named Burt. He sincerely believes he could escape from prison if the need ever arose.

Strange how parks reach the bursting limit now on some weekends. How does this success come in what's allegedly a recession? Operator in Dells Extreme World accident will not take plea deal. Jeff and Gonch are still troubled by low-wage job that carries potential for felony charges. Ferrari World opens with the world's fastest roller coaster, and even without riding it, a lot of people are poo-pooing it. It just doesn't look that interesting outside of the speed. Are we jaded or do we just know what kinds of roller coaster sensations we prefer? Kentucky Kingdom won't open next year because it can't get the funding it wants in time. Live it up another year, Holiday World! New Cars area coming together at California Adventure. Mike says it's just huge to see in person. Six Flags sees boost in revenue and says it's backing off the addictive discounting to drive attendance. Gonch and Mike say they didn't see any gate integrity this year in their visits. Q Funding goes after Dick Kinzel while the company names some promotions, in title at least. Cedar Fair results are definitely better in most ways, though per capita spending and profit is down. Neat video from the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans appears, then disappears, from YouTube. Looked like it was shot on a DSLR. Philip Bloom shoots some neat stuff on DSLR's (not this one though). Holiday World posts video of real humans riding the Timberliners on The Voyage. Speaking of Holiday World, the Fall Affair will return for 2011, with details forthcoming. The crew misses the good ol' days at Kings Island with Jeff and Maureen, and the ultimate multi-ride ERT. Long live BeastBuzz. You can get the latest headlines on CoasterBuzz from the Twitter. Episode 23 - Nino Leitner and Sebastian Wiegaertner - The Philip Bloom Interns - on the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with host Carl Olson - a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Nino Leitner is a filmmaker, DP and film producer based in Vienna, Austria. Nino focuses mainly on commercial work as well as documentaries. Sebastian Wiegärtner is an experienced graphic designer who recently started filmmaking with a Canon 7D. Both Sebastian and Nino recently worked together as interns in Prague with Philip Bloom on the George Lucas film Red Tails. A few days ago, I had an amazingly delightful conversation with these two brilliant filmmakers in Europe. I did my best to pry secrets out of them about working with Philip on the Red Tail feature film production by George Lucas. However, my cunning was no match for the steely resolve of Nino and Sebastian. They didn't budge. Next time I'll make sure there's a round of beer available. Nonetheless Nino and Sebastian talk extensively about using the Canon T2i and 7D for their video work.

Episode 18 of the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with host Carl Olson - a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Featuring: Philip Bloom, Director of Photography, Cinematographer, Director, Editor, DSLR Video Pioneer No other name is more synonymous with DSLR video than Philip Bloom - a London, UK-based director of photography,  cinematographer, director and editor with over 20 years of experience. He embraced and popularized the use of 35mm adapters to achieve a filmic look with video. On the heels of that innovation, came the new video capable DSLR. Philip received his first Canon 5D Mark II in May of 2009. After spending several weeks learning how to use the 5D Mark II, he began shooting almost exclusively DSLR video for both commercial and personal projects. He chronicled in great detail his experiences with DSLR video on his website and blog www.philipbloom.net. On June 1, 2010, after just a little under 3 years of existence, his website surpassed 10 million views - a testament to the value of the information Philip shares so willingly to other aspiring DSLR cinematographers. In this interview, Philip and I go on a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride of a conversation covering a broad range of topics that you will find entertaining, informative, and inspiring. Philip's tireless passion for the art of cinematography and photography comes shining through. We talk travel, business, filmaking, toy camera photography, lighting and camera support systems, timelapse, DSLR meet-ups and workshops, and his plans for the future. This is Philip Bloom like you have never heard him before.

Episode 16 of the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with host Carl Olson - a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Featuring: Shane Hurlbut, ASC In a recent conversation with Gale Tattersall, DP for Fox's House MD, Gale mentioned Shane Hurlbut - along with Rodney Charters and Philip Bloom - as one of the pioneers of using the Canon 5D Mark II in cinema. That's quite an honor to be recognized as a member of the triumvirate of video DSLR pioneers. In recognition of Shane's pioneering work with the Canon 5D Mark II, Canon inducted Shane as one of the first cinematographers into their Explorers of Light program. Shane's long list of accomplishments include working with director Rob Cohen on the feature films The Guardian, The Rat Pack and The Skulls. A partial list of other feature films that credit Shane as the cinematographer or director of photography include Into the Blue, Drumline, Swing Vote, The Greatest Game Ever Played, and Terminator Salvation. He has also worked on several commercial shoots and is an accomplished still photographer. In this episode of the 16x9 Cinema Digital Convergence podcast, Shane Hurlbut shares his passion for using DSLR video. He describes the Canon 5D Mark II as a game changer - one that's beat him up and heavily bruised him - but nonetheless he has successfully tamed the beast and embraced it as a serious tool for the cinematographer in feature films, short films, and commercial work. There are many self-appointed pontificators who arrogantly proclaim that the Canon 5D Mark II is not suitable for serious filmmaking. Shane proves them wrong by doing just that - using the 5D Mark II for serious filmmaking. Shane talks about how he uses the Canon 5D Mark II on feature films and commercials. He talks about his short film, "The Last 3 Minutes" and tells us why and how he did it. Shane candidly talks about his initial failures with DSLR video and the lessons he learned. He does not hold back from sharing what he has learned. His willingness to share is evident by his blog: Hurlblog - an incredible resource for all filmmakers - whether you use DSLR video or not. It was a pleasure talking with Shane. His enthusiasm for filmmaking and using the Canon 5D Mark II will motivate you to get out and shoot your next indie film!

At the time of recording this podcast (February 25, 2010), Philip Bloom was beta testing Kessler Crane's Oracle system and the CineSlider. We take a few moments to speculate on the future of controllers, time-lapse photography and motion control. This episode is a long one - almost 50 minutes in length! But the time flies by as Eric enthuses on everything motion control and hybrid DSLRs.
